God Is Not Waiting To Punish You

A lot of people don’t walk away from God because they stop believing He exists. They walk away because they believe He’s angry, impossible to please, and ready to punish the moment they mess up. We start with a short story that exposes how easily we misread love as control and protection as deprivation.

We share the moment that grabbed us: three kids sneak into the woods after years of hearing “don’t go without me.” At first it feels like freedom, like their dad has been holding out on them. Then darkness hits, fear spirals, and shame convinces them they should run away rather than go home. On the way back, they see their father holding something that looks like a whip and the dread spikes, until they realize it’s a towel and a washcloth. He isn’t coming to beat them. He’s coming to clean them up.

That’s the spiritual gut-punch. Many of us carry a distorted image of God the Father, assuming He’s always upset, always disappointed, and always keeping score. We challenge that lie with the gospel: God is more loving and wiser than we give Him credit for, and He moves toward us with mercy, cleansing, and freedom through Jesus Christ. We close with a prayer asking God to set the record straight and transform our imagination so we can relate to Him with trust instead of fear.

Why Stories Shape Our Beliefs

It wasn't too terribly long ago that I heard this story about a dad and three of his kids. And I heard when it when I heard when I first heard this story, it just really captivated my attention. And it's because stories, of and by themselves, for me, they're very special because it's been through stories that God has communicated some of his most powerful truths to me. And sometimes even through me. And stories are some of the most ancient or some of the oldest ways of conveying information. In fact, before there were written tablets, things were passed along orally. And so storytelling really dates back about as far as man telling stories and conveying things, how people would find herds of animals to hunt and how they'd find lakes and just a variety of different things to help them navigate through life. And they would tell stories about this. And this one story, I just well, I'm I'm gonna I'm gonna share it with you because it so it really captured my attention, and I think it brings this point home real clear, and that is

Three Kids Test The Boundary

that sometimes we don't see things clearly. Sometimes I see things that I imagine them to be one way when they're actually a completely different way, period. And this story really helps illustrate that. This dad had three kids and they lived in this really nice area, but it was backed up to these uh these these wooded areas, this is wooded area. And so the woods was fairly deep and fairly thick, and the dad wanted to keep his kids from getting hurt, and so he told his kids, don't go into the woods without me, because you can get hurt. And so they listened to him for several years, they heard him share this. And then when it got to be about 10 years old, one of the kids said, I don't know if dad really wants us to go there because he's trying to keep something from us. And the other kids thought, you know, I wonder if I betcha dad doesn't want us to see good things because he wants them all to himself. And so they said, Tomorrow we're gonna go in the woods. And so they prepared themselves some snacks the next day, and they kind of made it look like they were going to go outside and play, and they went out and they played, and then they headed toward the woods. And they looked back to see if their dad was watching, and they didn't see their dad watching, so they went into the woods, and they found that the woods had all these wonderful things to explore and discover, and they knew for a fact, yep, dad was trying to keep us from having a good time, and so they continued to play until it got dark. The time just went flying by, and before they knew it, it was dark, and they could see that their dad was on the porch looking for them. And they looked at each other and they could see, oh no, they were all full of dirt, and they couldn't hide the fact that they were in the woods because they had all the dirt from the woods, the leaves,

Fear Turns Into Runaway Plans

some of the bark from the trees. It just they were they were a mess. And so they were afraid to go see their dad because they didn't want to catch, you know, a discipline. Uh they didn't want to let him want to get a spanking is what they didn't want. And they were afraid that they were gonna get a spanking. And one of the kids said, you know what? Let's just run away from home. Let's just let's just run away. It if we go back, dad's gonna beat us. But if we run away, then we'll at least be able to help each other out. And so they decided that they were gonna try, and they started crying, and pretty soon they were they were just upset, and one of them said, I don't care. I don't care anymore. I I I don't want to be out in the woods, I'm scared, I'm gonna go home even if dad spanks me. And on their way, they saw that their dad had something in their uh in his hand.

And it looked like a whip. It looked like they were gonna get a belt, a spanking.

So they hurried up and they got closer toward their dad, and they come to find out that their dad didn't have a belt or a whip. Their dad had a towel and a washcloth.

The Towel Reveal And Real Motive

And he thought these kids were dirty, and he knew that they had been in the woods, and he knew that they were afraid of what had taken place, and that that fear was enough of a punishment for them that he didn't need to punish them because they saw that he was not trying to keep them from something bad, he didn't want them to get hurt or to get lost. In fact, in the end, he was there not to beat them, but to help clean them up. And the moral of the story, folks, is this our heavenly father, our heavenly father, God the Father, has gotten a bad rap when it comes to the way that he goes about doing things. Some of us have a view of God that he's always on the verge of being angry or upset with you. You can never measure up. He's always angry,

Relearning God As Loving Father

he's always on the verge of being upset, and so why even bother? And folks, that's a lie. You see, God, our father, is far more loving than we give him credit for. He's wiser than we give him credit for, he is absolutely more capable of doing things far beyond what we've given him credit for. God is absolutely better than what we have ascribed to him oftentimes as being. And we want to convey once again this beautiful truth that God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever would believe in him would not perish, but have everlasting life. And whom the Son says free, he or she, they are free indeed. So folks, let's just take a moment and pray and commit ourselves once again to the heart of our loving Father.
