Crocus

Crocus sativus

Appearance: Crocuses have long, thin leaves and tulip-shaped flowers. Some varieties have a bright yellow stigma. Crocuses grow from a bulb.

The most expensive spice in the world, saffron, comes from crocuses. Crocuses are one of the first flowers to grow in the springtime and are a sign of hope. The writer of Isaiah compares those who have been redeemed by God to be like a desert bursting into flower.

The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.
