Advent I: Thin Spaces

St. Columba's Episcopal Church

The Rev. Meghan Mullarkey
Text: Matthew 3:1-12

"On the first Advent - people expected the Messiah to arrive on a war horse, instead, how does Jesus arrive? well first as a a vulnerable baby, and then as an adult this messiah comes to us on a donkey.  He washes our feet and tells us to love our enemies, not a very good warrior.

Why then do we think the second time the Messiah comes he is going come in a violent way?  We keeping putting the Messiah back on the war horse.  We keep creating a story of good people and bad people.  People who are in and people who are out.  People who will be saved and people who will be damned.

But Jesus says, love your enemies.  Wash their feet.

I do not understand how in the context of Jesus life, this passage has been so poorly interpreted and how the rapture has been come to be understood as anything connected to Jesus or Christianity."
