The Enneagram is a psycho spiritual model of understanding human behavior. You have Myers Briggs and you have Big five and you have so many other personality models and they're all Important and good and useful but the difference with the Enneagram is that it helps you pinpoint your motivations and It helps you to see the things that you believe and really the core of your being that are not true Hi, welcome to the soul streaker podcast. I'm your host, Jenna Jake. Are you ready to feel all lit up and excited like you just ran through a field naked? I am. So drop that baggage and let your soul go streaking. Hi. Welcome to the Love Spirituality and Freedom podcast. I am your host, Jenna Jake. Today's episode is about the Enneagram. The Enneagram is a personality test. It is one of the most powerful and insightful tools for understanding ourselves and others. People love this. This test at its core, it helps us to see ourselves at a deeper, more objective level and can be an invaluable assistance to path of self knowledge. So I got my agram after having Heath on the show. From the Agram Institute. Enneagram is spelled E-N-N-E-A-G-R-A-M, the Angiogram Institute. You can go on there. There's two tests. Each one was$20. I've done one. It was very interesting and I encourage you to do the same. So if you're interested in learning more about yourself and how you can grow and become better spiritually or in every way, stick around for this episode because Heath is gonna break it down. Let's get to it. I'm so excited. Welcome to the show today. I am so excited because I have Heath Havlik, who's here today. She's an author and she knows all about the anagram. Welcome, Heath. I am so excited to have you today. Thank you. I am really happy to be here. So tell us everything. So you're an author, right? I am indeed. You write about God, which we love here at the podcast. Tell us all about your book and the anagram and how you, the anagram helped you with your book and. Yeah. So I, am coming out with my second book in March 14th is the release date. So congratulations. Thank you. So week from today when we are speaking, and it's called know yourself to know God. And the premise of it is that we are walking around pretty much on autopilot until we have, a specific life event or until we encounter the Enneagram and we see, Oh my goodness, I can now see that who I am is not actually how my personality keeps showing up in the world. And when that happens, it makes you less than you actually are, than the fullest, potential, the truest aspect of yourself that you have the potential to be. And when that happens, you are not going to be able to live out your divine purpose. So that's why I wrote this book. I feel like, it's just such a transformative system of understanding who you are and who other people are. The book talks about the Enneagram. It talks about the difference between your soul and your spirit. It talks about many things that will help people get clarity about who they are and who they're not. And then the second half of the book is a journaling exercise, basically. And it's a 30 day process of taking the information from the first part of the book. And really applying it to your own life. And it includes a stillness practice as well so that people can begin to recognize the thoughts that they keep having, that inner critic, that mean voice that's in your head, that's judging you and other people, and it helps you to create distance from that voice and to reclaim your own voice, your authentic self so that you can show up in the world in a truer, deeper way with greater presence. and then have much more opportunity to live out your calling or your destiny in life. This is amazing. Okay. I'm sorry. I was calling it anagram. I stand corrected. It's enneagram. That's all right. Stand corrected a lot here. This. Okay. Humility is a beautiful thing. All right. And then you said so many other things and I didn't write them down and now I don't remember, what I wanted to ask you. So let's just start with what is an enneagram and how can I help God? Yes. That is a great question. The Enneagram is a psycho spiritual model of understanding human behavior. You have Myers Briggs and you have Big five and you have so many other personality models and they're all Important and good and useful but the difference with the Enneagram is that it helps you pinpoint your motivations and It helps you to see the things that you believe and really the core of your being that are not true and so once you begin to understand that then you can unpack all the garbage that's lying on top of your soul of your the real essence of who you actually are. So the Enneagram has this model where there are nine personality types, and Ennea is the Greek word for nine, and each one of those personality types has a specific set of patterns that are actually neurologically programmed in your mind. It's a physical real thing and the goal is not to suddenly not have a personality. The goal is to catch yourself in the act, keep seeing the patterns that are showing up in your life. And learning to create some distance from those impulses that those patterns create that are negative, right? Like the three fights you keep having with your spouse. The mean things you keep hearing your say about yourself and other people, for instance, and the Enneagram is awesome for, Transforming relationships and that includes your relationship with God. Okay, so where can you get a hold of an Enneagram? Okay, so what I recommend is that people go to the enneagraminstitute. com because they have spent decades researching this personality model and really they are pioneers Enneagram. So there's a ton of free information there. And if people are so inclined, there's also a test that's available so that they can get more clarity in what their type might be. And that's about 12, but it's been scientifically validated. So I can recommend it with full confidence. And that is a really good starting point. You could also go to my, blog. I have a ton of free information there as well for everything from very basic to more advanced information about the Enneagram as well. So I, I just found Enneagram test. com. That's what you said., No, my recommendation was Enneagram Institute. but there is a test on that site that you can go to. All right. Let me go to Enneagram Institute. Enneagram Institute. Okay. Discover your Enneagram type. Take the test. Okay. So you can take it there. There you go. Not everyone needs a test, but for some people it can be super helpful. It's twenty dollars. It's not free. No, it's not free. it used to be twelve, so that's good news, good information for me to have that it's, gone up in, in price. But let me tell you, if you are struggling to find your type and that's something you really want to delve into, It is money well spent because I am really actively looking to change my subconscious programming. Will this help me change my subconscious programming? Oh my word. Absolutely. Okay. Absolutely. Yeah. Because again, those patterns are not necessarily, healthy and good. So when you're a little kid, even when you're an infant, there are things that happen to you that cause trauma, right? With a small T or a big T, either one. And those, when you respond to trauma, given the neural pathways that you have in your mind. It reinforces things that aren't necessarily true. And then that inner critic, which is really trying to keep you safe, is going to tell you things that aren't true as well. And so the goal is to recognize what those messages are. And again, once you see them, you can realize, oh. I am not that thing because I can observe it, right? I'm not that thought. I'm not that person. I'm not that idea. I'm not that emotion. And so you can create this little bit of space between your, what your normal reaction would be and that pause where you can be present and you can choose to do something else. You can choose to not believe that programming that I am on a healing, not a journey anymore. Like it's happening. And like the coach I'm working with, that's what she says. She's I want you to stop believing your thoughts and all of your feelings. And every time you get anxious, go, Nope, I'm focusing on this and just get in present moment. That's fantastic. Yep. In present moment. I'm not doing that. I'm getting in the present moment. Yeah. Yeah. And that's when something flips. Yes. Yeah. That's the beautiful thing about the Enneagram is that once you start incorporating it into your daily life, into your thought processes into how you process things, this beautiful organic transformation happens, right? So you show up doing, the part that you're able to do. But the thing is that the personality can't fix the personality. It is broken. It has terrible ideas. It cannot fix itself. So you have to go around it by doing again these practices like a stillness practice, like learning how to talk to your inner critic, so that you can sneak around. it and outsmart it and overcome it. And then the transformation just organically arises. How long does it take? Oh it varies wildly. It depends on your level of trauma, quite honestly. Yeah, so it might take a while. It might just take a couple weeks to begin that transformational process, but I, from the two decades I've been doing this, I, never run out of things to work on. There's always something else for me to discover and to say, Oh, I see this as an area where I still am believing lies, or this is not the best way to respond to someone. So there's always fine tuning that needs to happen as well, probably for the rest of our lives, but boy, it's a journey worth taking. Okay, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, soon as we're done, I'm gonna get my enneagram, enneagram done. And then the stillness practice, is that kind of like a meditation? And then how do we talk to the inner critic? Okay excuse me, I'm just getting over a very long cold. Okay. The first question you asked was about not the inner critic, but, oh, the meditation practice. Yeah. So what I recommend and what's in my both my books actually is that you just learn to be still. Really. It's a stillness practice and that's what helps you to become more present, right? Because most of our lives, we're just stuck in the past and we're just reacting. to things based on stuff that triggers us, based on traumas that we've experienced. So the stillness practice, though sometimes it can be very difficult initially and you got to stick with it, really helps just quiet your mind so that you're not automatically just reacting to everything. And it's difficult to explain how that transformation happens, but it does. I can say for my own life that I am an Enneagram type seven and, if you want to, we can talk about that later, but you know what the different types represent, but I am someone whose brain goes a thousand miles a minute. I have what's called monkey mind if I'm not paying attention. And so when I sat down and began to, try practicing stillness. My heart raced. I felt like I was dying. I thought, Oh my word, this is supposed to be relaxing. I've I'm terrified. What is going on? And the reason that it was so terrifying is because my brain patterns were telling me you need to stay in constant motion. It's not safe to be quiet and still see. So that was one of the, particular lies that my personality type. Has to overcome, but the stillness practice I recommend is just very simple. You just, you sit in a chair where you're quiet somewhere. If you have a noisy household, go lock yourself in your car for 10 minutes if you need to and set a timer so you don't have to keep looking at the clock and just close your eyes. Feel your back against the chair, feel your feet on the ground, focus on your breathing because that's the only thing that's present, right? Your body is what's present. Your brain can be in the future, in the past, in the present. Your body is in the present moment and that is what can help ground you and help you not to spin out with a million different ideas so that you can begin to be quiet. and still and begin to hear the things that your inner critic is saying more clearly because those will show up when you sit down to do this. And again, that's another indicator of the things that you need to focus on. Your inner critic is very directed towards things that will keep you safe. And so when you listen to the, it's voice, it helps you know the things that you're paying too much attention to and the things that are damaging your relationships, for instance, as well. Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So then. Oh, sorry. Go ahead. Go ahead. I asked three. Yeah. So then as in terms of the inner critic, there are several things that you can do. My favorite method is what I call the judgments journal and you can get to a point where you don't have to write this down anymore because you'll just start recognizing it. But I recommend that at least for several weeks you get a little journal or you use your notes app on your phone, whatever works for you. And as the second that you hear any kind of judgment towards yourself, towards other people, towards a situation, you jot it down. And again, over time, you will notice the things that your inner critic is focusing on and pointing to, and that can help you figure out. Again, some of the lies that you've been believing that no longer serve you or that possibly never served you. And it's a really powerful way to catch it in the act, catch yourself in the act with the thoughts that you're thinking. So that's one way to do it. You can also talk directly to your inner critic. And again, this has to do with what's most comfortable to you because of the Enneagram type that you have. So you may, cuss at it, you may just say, shut up, you may laugh at it. And that really disarms the inner critic because it is very self serious and it thinks it's doing you this amazing favor by keeping you in this tiny little prescribed circle of what's appropriate. And so when you laugh at it it really just freaks it out. so that can be really useful as well. You can imagine throwing a bomb at it again, maybe that's too violent for some people. So again, it just depends on, what you're comfortable with, but you can just engage with it and even say, you know what, that hurt my feelings or look, I know you're trying to help me, but this is not. helpful. The things that you're saying to me are the things you're saying to other people about other people. That's not cool. And I don't want you to do that anymore. It goes for fears too. Yes, absolutely. Okay. Excellent. And then, so how does all this come back to God? So I'll start by saying that the Enneagram is Crew because it's just true. So even if somebody were an atheist, the Enneagram applies to them because they have a brain, right? Cause they're a human being. But because I'm someone who already has what I would call a God filter, right? Everything that comes into your life, you, you put through the filter. So when I learned about the Enneagram and I learned about my own type, I instantly understood that. I was running on autopilot, as I said earlier, and that I was not showing up in my life as the person that God made me to be. Instead, I'm showing up as this lesser version with my various wounds and traumas and assumptions and lies. Now, I am someone who is not okay with living on autopilot or living a lie or being a slave to something that isn't true. So I determined in my heart, okay, I am going to learn everything I can about the Enneagram so that I can be who God intended me to be on this earth so that I can show up with all the gifts that he gave me when I can show up to bless other people in the world with those gifts and with compassion and all of the things that would be available if I actually weren't. Enslaved by all this junk that's in my soul. Yeah. Okay. So your type, so let's, whatever type you are, which is what on the end you're getting? It's called Type 7 and the title is The Enthusiast. So all the Enthusiasts in the world are like you? So to a degree. We all have what I call like the same operating system. Okay. Which means that for type sevens, we are optimistic. We are assertive. We have a lot of agency. We get stuff done. We often can be the life of the party. We're good storytellers. We like to have adventures. We're excited by the latest new thing, right? We have shiny object syndrome for sure. Enneagram type. We also have what's called wings, which means the influence of the number on either side of you and human beings tend to focus on one of those wings. Sometimes people have equal influence from both, but usually it's one or the other. And then we also have to deal with all of the different. Life experiences that people have all the different traumas that people have the different gifts that are inside them, right? So I'm a writer on an Enneagram seven, but not all sevens are writers, right? But we all again have that drive inside of us. That's based on our basic fear So the basic fear for type 7 is that we're going to be trapped in deprivation or pain and so Enneagram theory says that out of that basic fear And each type has its own basic fear that a basic desire arises. So we're trying to run away from that fear. We're trying to manage that fear as best we can. And so our brilliant brains come up with this strategy for how to avoid that, that terrifying thing inside of us, that fear. And so then the basic desire arises. So the basic fear for type seven is that we're going to be trapped in deprivation or pain. So then what the brain comes up with is, Oh, just find everything fun and exciting and happy and don't make commitments because you won't get trapped that way. On the one hand, that makes for a fun party goer. On the other hand, that does not make for a great long term relationship when things get hard, for instance, right? So each type has, has to address its own, core, basic fear. But, within that, we all are individual human beings, we're all uniquely created, but sevens understand each other in a way that other types don't, and eight's the same, four's the same, etc. That's crazy, that's amazing. That's amazing. Okay, so what haven't I asked that I should be asking? Oh my goodness that's a great question too. I think that we've, done a good job of just looking at. What the Enneagram is and how it can be a beginning point for transformation for people. That's really the key thing that I want to drive home. It's not simple, right? There are definitely complexities associated with it because human beings are complex. Our brains are stunningly complex and amazing and capable of tremendously beautiful or terrible things, right? Any system that suggests to you that they can just break down, why humans do what they do in a simple way, it's not going to be helpful. So if you're willing to do this work, you need to be, you just need to understand that it's going to take a little bit of work to understand the entire model, but that once you understand the model. You cannot unsee it. You're going to see your friends, your family, your enemies, whoever, right? Your workmates in a new light, and you're going to have more compassion. That's. It's something that I think is awesome that people need to understand. And I was surprised by this. I was not expecting this, but when I learned the Enneagram, I've been trying to follow God for decades, right? And I learned the Enneagram and I have so much more compassion now than I've ever had in my life for other people because it really shows you the hard battle that every person is fighting. And so that's why I love and recommend the Enneagram. Does it help you realize that we're spirits having a human experience? Because I, I know that so well in my mind and I'm waiting to embody, get that and they're so present and happy because they know there's only one of us here and it's all, we're all the same, we're all just conscious awareness. Does it help you get there? It definitely helps you understand that we are more than just how we've been showing up. So it. And it, once you recognize, Oh, I'm not who I thought I was, then it opens up this door for people to, so much of the time for people to want to explore, Oh, if I'm not who I thought I was, then what might I be? How does God fit in that matrix? How does spirituality fit with this new understanding that I'm not who I thought I was? So all of these things, all of these ideas. begin to meld together and lead you on a path toward discovering your authentic self. And my, my theology includes the idea that we have a soul, which is our mind, will, emotions, a lot of stuff that goes on in our head, but then our spirit is something else. And the spirit is where our true essence is. And that's where God lives. So what we're trying, yes, that's what we're trying to get to right now. Our souls are in charge of our spirits. And that's how I describe it in my books is that, think of a fist and that's your spirit, and then the soul is your other hand coming over and hovering it. And right now, that's how the paradigm is working, but in reality, we should be living from our spirits and our souls should be in service to our spirits. And that is where that spiritual component comes in. People use the words interchangeably and they're not the same thing. They're not at all. Yeah. And you're using the word spirit. Soul as like ego, or condition. Yes. That is another way you can look at it. Yeah. But I would say that the ego is a component of the soul that needs to get healed. Okay. So then tell us again what the soul is. So the soul has many aspects to it, but the main three that I think of are the mind, the brain processes and the will and the emotions, right? All of those things happen in your brain with all those neurochemical processes. And the, and your spirit is that essence, that like spark of life, that authentic, true you that God made. And right now it's just buried underneath all of the other stuff. The spirit is the witness. That's a lovely way to say it. Yeah. And then so your ego, so as it sounded like your whole, your emotions and your thoughts is that's your ego mind. So how is part of the soul when it sounds like it pretty much is the soul? Because, because there, there are more components to your soul, like your preferences. Things that you like to do. So I see it as a larger entity and the ego, I think again is part of it. And then there's the super ego, which I think is also a part of the soul and the super ego is that is another word for that inner critic. Okay. How did you learn all of this? Oh my goodness. So I started out. Yeah, I started out with a book and then I read another book and then I found that there were conferences that were possible, near me. And so I went to a six day intensive, met a lot of people, learned a lot of good stuff. Then I thought, okay, I want to do this the rest of my life. And so I found a certification program through the Enneagram Institute. And over a course of several years, I took multiple classes. And then I did their certification programs. So I have, again, once I realized that this information was true, I just went for it. And, as I said, it does take some time to learn all the ins and outs, but, I have found it to be radically helpful. So how long does it take to take the Enneagram test? I'm going to take it now. I've never taken it quite honestly. I read a book about it, the Enneagram, and when I found my type, I instantly knew that was, yeah, that, what type I was like, I could not deny it. But again, not everyone has that experience. So I think the test,, based on what other people have said, I think it's about half an hour. It might be longer. I'm not sure. Okay. And then, so if people want more information or they want to do one on one coaching, is that all with you? Is that all up for availability? Yeah. So you can go to my website, HeathDavisHavlick. com, and you can look at my blog. You can email me. You can see my social media. All the things are there. Yeah. Yeah. Coaching. They want to learn more about the Enneagram, all of that. Yes. All of those things. I am up for all of it. Yep. This was so amazing. Okay. So what, is there anything else that we need to know? I want to reiterate something that you said in one of your podcasts, which is be kind to yourself on this journey. Have compassion for yourself as you go on it because you're going to find some startling and possibly unpleasant things, as you dig down, but just understand you didn't hurt yourself. This is not your fault and you are beautiful and beloved of God and you absolutely Deserve to give yourself compassion. Oh, that's thank you for quoting me to me. That was amazing. thank you so much for that. I need, I need that reminder too, even though I may, I say things and then I forget, I said, so that was a great reminder. Yeah, this is so interesting because I really am looking to. My mission is really to change my subconscious programming, like, why is it difficult? Wow, it can really take you down. Yeah. It's super difficult because these are the patterns we've been running on our whole lives, right? And it makes sense to our brain. So that's why it's so hard, but it's absolutely doable. Yep. You just got to put in the work. So this helps you go. These are lies. How do you get to that place with the Enneagram? It's really just consistency. It's just learning the model, learning your own stuff. And then as you're going through your life, you'll start to catch yourself in the act. You'll start to realize, Oh, I just did that thing again. Oh, I just believed that lie again. And again, it's just this unfolding process that occurs. It's not like you take the thing, take the Enneagram and then you go, okay, I'm done with that. And now I've learned all these things about myself. You do learn a lot of things about yourself, but again, it's this unfolding process that's very organic. Yeah. It's, and I know that can be frustrating for people to hear, but this, look, this is spiritual work. This is deep work and there, it's impossible to give it A timeline. You just, again, you have to have grace for yourself, you have to have compassion for yourself and trust that this is something that really is gonna bring awesome transformation if you just stick with it. I'm getting like, if you're listening to this, cause found me and I'm like, this is meant for me. And I feel like if you're listening to this is meant for you. Go to Enneagram Institute, pay the 20 bucks and get it done because this is your new next step healing. Yay. Okay. All right. He, thank you so much. Everybody's going to hit your website up.
