Yeah, we had such an incredible weekend. Like always, this is our fourth show in a row in the sixth annual Music City Drum Show. A huge shout out and thank you once again to Landon and JC for hosting and for having us back year after year. And so we split all of our live recordings from the booth into two separate episodes. First is live from day one on Saturday, followed by day two on Sunday. And it was truly so awesome getting to meet so many of you, drummers and vendors, hobbyists and enthusiasts alike from all walks of life and across the country. We had some really, I think some of our most interesting conversations this year. Would you agree?

I would. And I I want to echo what you said. Lannon and JC knocked it out of the park. It was bigger and better than ever this year. And that goes for the setup. It was smarter. I loved having the quiet room. Incredible. Also, pretty pumped about all the clinic traffic that came through. Smart. Yeah, it was kind of nice.

And the quiet, as I called it, the quieter zone. It's never gonna be quiet for a Trump show. But it's cool. It made these recordings definitely a lot easier. So definitely appreciate that.

And we had some phenomenal conversations. Honestly, it was just basically eight hours a day, two days in a row, of either being fully immersed in a conversation on the microphone or off the microphone. I got to play drums for about five minutes.

Which is like kind of sucked, but also like I'm there to talk to everybody and as a testament to how great the communications were and the hangs were at the booth. So who give me give me a few of your favorite interviews that you did?

Oh my god. I mean, uh I really I I I loved talking. Honestly, my favorite would probably the two favorites would probably be Lori Toscano and Sean Tract. Yeah, yeah, Lori from New York. Yep. Yep, yep, yep. Those were standout uh moments for me. Uh I I am like my mother. I really love a good character. And I could tell the instant I looked at both of them that they were characters. And I was dead right.

Yeah, I'm stoked. I got to sit down with Dorothy Taylor on day one. That was really special to meet her. Uh then started the day on Sunday, interviewing Chris Mazrizi from Big Fat Snare Drum. I can't wait for you to hear that. Yeah. So yeah, and yeah, if you were one of our interviewees from the booth, definitely help us out by sharing these episodes, telling a friend about the podcast. Yeah, uh so Axel grew up just outside of Portland, Oregon, which is hometown. It's always fun to see you know local talent just keep on thriving and keep on you know being successful. So it's been awesome. That's great. And are you a gigging drummer back home? I am, so I play in kind of a 90s to 2000 alt cover band we're called you know My Checker Past, and we just kind of love playing that genre. We're doing it for fun, kind of we joke, we're kind of a dad rock band, and it's uh it's just it's great fun. That's awesome. It's great fun.

Okay, last question, Tom. Uh anything you're looking to buy at the show, any gear? Oh boy, well it's tempting.

Yeah, it's it's incredibly tempting. There's uh I'm a snare drum junkie. I know I'm not alone there. Uh so if if I walk out of here with a snare drum either in hand or ordered, probably have to be ordered and shipped. That doesn't go on a plane very well. But uh snare drums, always looking at symbols, always looking at the latest and greatest. RA picked up a couple pair of drumsticks, new model line to check out. It's like there's so much here. So much, yeah. Really, the the thing I'm here to do is just connect and engage in the community because it's what I tell everybody I talk to about coming to Nashville is the drumming community out here is fantastic.

Jacqueline Cloud - "Change, Content, & Fudge"

Well, first of all, introduce yourself.

I'm Jacqueline Cloud, uh formerly known as Jaclyn Gasell. He casts one on YouTube and Instagram and all the others that exist. But yeah, um started early playing on YouTube. One of the first female drummers to do the whole shebang, the the lights, the sound, the semi-oka drumming. Not gonna say it was good. You were breaking ground. Yeah, I tried to. Yeah, and then um, you know, for now, I you know, I moved to Nashville, played professionally for a little bit, uh, liked it, didn't love it, and said, if I'm not gonna do this 110%, I'm not gonna do it at all. Like that was my thing. I've I'd never want to go into something like and half-ass it, so I just said to myself, if I'm not gonna go out there and be 110% in.

Yes. Yeah, I agree. And I said, if if I feel more comfortable doing studio stuff, which that is my background doing YouTube. I mean, you record stuff, if you mess up, you go back and do it again. Like that's that was my foundation. So going out and doing the live stuff, I I did enjoy it, but I put too much pressure on myself to where it was not enjoyable, and I said to myself, you know what, before I start hating the instrument, I'm gonna go back to the setting that I'm most comfortable in and truly just do YouTube. Do I mean I'm not doing a lot of YouTube now, it's like the Instagram reels of TikTok and speaking in elder millennial, just trying to get used to the short form. Um, but I like it. I, you know, that's where that's how I enjoy the drums now.

Yeah, what would you say, what feels the most different about content making these days?

SPEAKER_05 7:26

Yeah, I think um I enjoy not having to learn a full song to cover. You know, I used to have to learn the full song. Now I can sit down and record 10 covers in two hours just doing 30-second segments or whatever it might be. It keeps it light, it keeps it fun. You know, I obviously play more, like you only see 30 seconds, but you know, I could probably play the full song, but there's less pressure to do the whole thing because people don't have attention spans for that anymore.

Yeah, they're not they're not even checking out, it's they're not it's like they're not even checking out. Well, I don't even want to call it long form content because it's just like uh it's just regular form. Just a complete song, please.

Oh well, I still do that, but yeah, well, that's because you're a G and you you know what's up. Alright, tell me, tell me a little bit. We gotta we gotta talk about the show at least a little bit. What are you most excited about in the show?

Honestly, just seeing a lot of people that I don't see often.

Yeah.

SPEAKER_05 8:29

It's like uh it's the best drumming social hour or hours, depending on how long you're here. I'm not gonna be here that long this time. Um it's a little, it's so it's a lot. Last year I was here actually with my other business. I have a fudge company now. It's called Spoonable Fudge. We reinvented like traditional fudge. Anyways, that's a side thing. Yeah.

It's crazy. No, no, no, no, no. You can't you can't give me a tidbit like that and don't uh explain. Or maybe it's more hilarious for you not to explain, but I actually I do want you to tell me what do you mean you reinvented fudge?

SPEAKER_05 9:02

Yeah, so fudge is usually in blocks, bricks, dry. It's usually you get it, you know, out in pigeonforge in the mountains or maybe Rehoba's beach or something.

So usually blocks, bricks, and now it's spoonable, it's in a jar.

SPEAKER_05 9:16

So think like how you might take like a pint of ice cream, take a few bites, put it back, come back later, or eat it in one sitting, no judgment. But it's creamy, it's spoonable, it's not what you think traditional fudge is, and that's what makes it very good, very addictive. So when people are like, why aren't you doing covers? Like, I'm literally running a confectionery business now.

I have a fudge empire to run, you fools. I love it. That's incredible.

Um, but uh so back to the drum show, but when I come here, it's really nice to see everybody because you know I've like companies like Vader, I have been with them since I was like six, seventeen years old, maybe eighteen. I'm 34 now, time has passed. Um so I used to go to the damn shows, used to be great going and seeing everyone, but I live here in Nashville now, so it's nice like just a hop, skip, and a jump to see a lot of people that I don't see all the time. Um, and keep those relationships and meet new people. And it's this is the drumming community will always be like my OG community, no matter if I'm doing fudge or whatever else I'm doing. It's just I can always come back to this community and feel at home, and that's what I love. Because I'm not playing as much as I used to. I still am, and it's so nice to be able to just like no matter if you take five years off, five days off, you can always just come back and nothing has really changed. That's what I love. That's that's the drumming community.

Yep. There may be innovations in the technology just as there are innovations within Fudge, clearly, but the drumming world remains largely the same. People still hit stuff at varying degrees of loudness and fastness.

Uh Edgewell Groves. Uh, live here in Nashville, but I'm from Atlanta originally. Okay. Yeah.

First Music City drum show? Have you been here before?

SPEAKER_07 11:12

It is my first. Uh my buddies dragged me along and I said, I'll go. Yeah. Yeah, for sure. Yeah, I'm a drummer for 30, 35 years. Yeah. So yeah, it's about time I came to the Nashville drum show.

Are you are you a working drummer here in town?

SPEAKER_07 11:26

Uh no, I'm not a working drummer anymore. I was a working drummer for 10 years. 10 years, okay. Then I moved to the uh music business side of things.

Okay, cool. Yeah. What are you up to in the industry?

SPEAKER_07 11:36

Uh let's see. So I started off as a drummer, then became a guitar player, but I'm still a drummer.

SPEAKER_06 11:40

Yeah.

But um ended up um managing artists for a long time.

SPEAKER_06 11:45

Yeah.

And then had a record label, but moved to Los Angeles, worked at Sony, worked at SoundCloud, worked at a bunch of large streaming platforms, and then moved out to Nashville to kind of get a fresh restart, hit the restart button.

And do a mixture of music and technology. So I'm doing music tech, but I still work with artists constantly.

That's very cool. Yeah. So you've kind of seen how the sausage is made, right?

It's definitely made. Yeah. In a lot of ways. Um, yeah, so I I actually um used to work with a bunch of um a bunch of drummers who are way better than I am. Yeah. And so that's kind of why I said, you know, after 10 years of doing it full-time, I mean I made a living doing it. But I woke up one day and went, um, there are people who are much more deserve this than I do. So um, yeah, I I I look up to so many drummers, or even at this show right now, I'm walked by and talking about it.

Give us give me uh who are some of your favorite drummers? Oh man, I mean either present or you know, past drummers.

SPEAKER_07 12:35

Uh there's a drummick named uh Felix Lehrmann. Okay, um, he's unbelievable. Uh let's see, he's a German drummer, he's fantastic. I mean, I'm blown away by Annika right now, who's out playing with Josh Schmidt. It's crazy to see.

So happy to see her on that gig. Her poise.

She's it's a most what wouldn't you call that like the most high pressure situation possible.

I would I would say, I would argue that. I mean, Neil Peard is obviously irreplaceable. And of course, like those Rush fans are so you know, the judgmental, some of them are, and like but I think she's killing it, still infusing her own style. It's really, really cool to see.

Yeah, I love that she didn't try to fill the shoes, she's just being loyal enough to the content.

And but it's it's pretty amazing. But um, so yeah, I mean, let me see. Like other drummers that I love, geez. I don't know, I'm I'm old school. I couldn't tell you a lot of new drummers. I'm a Bill Bruford, Phil Collins fan.

Yeah, so he's the one who's like, you're coming to this. And I was like, okay. Um but uh yeah, he's here because he has the uh company Ball Man Percussion, the junk hat. So I'm here today because I actually wanted to find some tools and stuff that I can use that I'm starting to play gigs again on the side and doing a little bit of traveling, and I want to find some stuff that just makes my life easier for setup and breakdown.

Yeah, 100%. Yeah, I mean, what do you suggest? I think you're in the right place.

In terms of like cases or like uh or even a drum kit that's just easy to put together, easy to break down. Like, what what's out there that can make a one-off gig?

Yeah, I mean a lot of the companies have like the lightweight, you know, uh hardware symbols, uh stands and stuff. Uh there's like this, even like a suitcase drum set.

I mean, obviously there's electronic and acoustic cajon setups and stuff. But if you're talking about like still like a normal acoustic kit, yeah, I don't know. I'm curious what you what you can find here. Yeah, I gotta. Yeah, because every every year it seems to be some new vendors and it's pretty cool.

At some point, you're just gonna pull a drum set out of your pocket and it's just gonna fall apart.

There might be something in the dirt. Well, and because there might be, I started eating it just a little. Just whenever I got just like a spoonful when I get out there. Uh-huh. I was like doing like the cinnamon challenge, but with like Mount Shasta dirt. Interesting. And I do feel like it gave me some powers, but like not a lot of them.

That's right. I'm fresh off fresh off the train from New York, from the big apple. Right now I'm looking to collaborate with other musicians and play accordion on tracks where people will say, I wonder what that would sound like with an accordion on it. I want to be asked that question. This morning I was experimenting with In the White Room through the program with the station with an accordion, Nathan! Oh, that's so cool! In the white room with my accordion and my Nathan. And so I've been collaborating with this really good guy, Andy Edmondson, okay, in East Nashville here. And so we collaborate every Thursday night, and we he writes great music, he's a great storyteller, and he envisions accordion on his music. And it was meant to be.

Of course, and we've uh I I personally have been following you for many years now, and it's I appreciate it. So you're doing a clinic here this weekend? Yes. Tomorrow. Tomorrow, it's a Sunday. One o'clock. Yes. What is uh what are you gonna focus on during the clinic?

I am a rudimental drummer, so I'm of course going to be teaching the importance of rudiments and how you apply them to a drum set. Because a lot of people, a lot of drummers think you don't need rudiments. If you're going to be playing a drum set, that would be just for marching, but I'm gonna show how cool they are applied to the kit.

How long have you been playing drums? Uh only 63 years.

Only 63 years. My gosh. Give give us uh who are some of your favorite drummers, either past or or current.

Well, of course, my my first one is always Buddy Rich. Yeah. I grew up watching them on Johnny Carson and things like that. And then, you know, I started my own drum set, you know, playing and learning to John Bonham. So, you know, cream and iron butterfly, and into those eras of you know, between 1968 and 1970, I think. And I mean, there's so many good drummers out there now.

It's crazy, and especially being here in Nashville.

Yes, there's so many drummers. I I would hate to list them because I would be missing exactly, yeah. Yeah. He's just so, you know, it's just so overwhelming. There's so many good drummers out there now. Yeah. I do love like Benny Greb.

Well, you've taken social media by storm, it seems like, over the past few years. And I, you know, I've had family members send me some of your videos of you just in the kitchen and tapping playing on a pad. What has that been like for you? As you know, I assume that hasn't always been the case. And some videos kind of caught wind, and you've you've been in drumeo and you're here at the drum show doing a clinic. And what how how has that balance been for you? How has that change been?

SPEAKER_04 33:09

Well, it's kind of like a dream come true because I always wanted when I was 17, 18, 19, I wanted to be a famous drummer somewhere. I wanted to go to California and get in some band. And then I got married instead and started having children. Yeah, yeah. And so just played locally in different bands. But when I uh first did the rudiment of just double strokes that went viral and it had like a million views in one. So that was like that was the first video. Yeah. And then after that, you know, just tons of followers, tons of opportunity, but you know, being called by Jimmy Fallon and really, you know, Nick Ken show and Drew Barrymore's show. Yeah. So I've done several different shows. Jennifer Hudson and and it all it was all because of social media.

Yeah. And I'll just say I think your smile is infectious, your energy. I think you know that carries through your content, and it's just so awesome to see. I appreciate that.

I have been living in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for 55 years, but I'm originally from Michigan where I learned to play drums in a drum and bugle core.
