30: Why Bluesky is replacing Twitter & We Love It

hey besties. Bluesky is decentralized platform without a self made algorithm. It is totally neutral BUT there is a goal to disallow hate speech and disinformation (but we'll see). bluesky has actually been a pleasant place that I would love to share with you guys, im heyreesegrey on there.

Social media is not about the tech. Its about the community, and we need Internet forums from the 2000s again SO this is as close as we're gonna get. Lots of cat pics. i joined twitter back in 2009 and this feels just like old twitter. i like it and i'm considering giving it a try. For those of you who had joined right after it started but never went because none of the people you visted were there. I can pretty much guarantee you everyone is there now.

All righty! Hey Guys :) Welcome back, gather around Grandma's got a story to tell! 

You know what, I think that's a legitimate way to start off this today's you know topic because we're talking about blue sky. I've been around I've been around the internet okay... like Xanga, Myspace, that was me, that was my generation. That's what we did, and now now we're we're at the time where we're replacing Twitter slash X it has just been a while ride hasn't it? And so I want to talk about the lore of Blue Sky and how it came to be because honestly it's juicy the the downfall of Twitter is Juicy all right and we're we're going to talk about it today so on Reese Grey Analyzes we look at creations and experiences in art media music and even video games to explore exactly why we think the way we think question what we believe and learn something new :) and oh boy I'm always learning something new but blue sky is easy to use so if you've been living under a rock or otherwise been living a fulfilling life where you didn't know this. (not me) Twitter slash X basically people are jumping ship to other microblogging-ish platforms and one of the hugest platforms that's seen amazing growth is blue sky and so you might be thinking like oh like why does this need an entire video like like things like fizzle out like it's not really that big of a deal no it is a big deal besties it is a big deal that Twitter is failing and blue sky is replacing it there is a lot of tea blue sky is a decentralized platform and what that means is that not one person or company owns it which is super popular right now because people want their privacy on their micro blogging platforms and they want to be in control of their data right? So, for Blue Sky not one company owns it but for Twitter obviously you know Elon Musk owns it you can't even block him on Twitter if you try it says "this action is forbidden" which is wild you send tweets but they're not called tweets they're called skeets which the CEO begged people not to call it and of course when you do that people are going to do the thing you're telling them not to do because you're telling them not to do it why are people even leaving Twitter so people are really mad because of how poisonous the platform has gotten the sentiment on there is not safe and it's very far right on Twitter right now that's what people are feeling and so they want to go somewhere where people aren't intentionally trying to just create rage bait content in order to get clicks, right? So, people are moving. There are other deeper reasons too people are really mad about Trump being elected into presidency as well and Trump Trump appointed Elon Musk as the department of governmental efficiency or Doge so he's been appointed to make the government more more efficient people are very upset about that and they're tired of what they call a Cess poool of far-right media and also a cesspool 

of Taylor Swift fans I'm just kidding I'm just kidding I'm just kidding Blue Sky actually just recently went public like this year in 2024 in February before that it was open but it was invite only then they had about 3 million users and then they opened it up to the public blue sky is similar to Twitter and it is but then how is it different other than being decentralized there is this huge focus on moderating and curating your own content and being in control of the things that you see and also like having a very public and open platform that encourages is public discussion so a huge way that blue sky kind of encourages this algorithmic choice is by users making starter packs which is a list of people that anyone can make so anybody can create a starter pack and it allows anybody else to follow that starter pack to just automatically have a hub of people. So to automatically be looped into a certain Community right so you can make one yourself or you can join one so that's like a really quick way to like curate your own algorithm in your own page and your own audience and so what they also do is allow people to use a domain name in their handle so for instance I could have reesegrey.com linked in my handle to legitimize that I am who I say I am so anyone with a https link or whatever can link that in their domain name as I understand it I don't know how blockchain works who does so you could tell me anything and I would have to believe you because what what do I know and then other fun facts about blue sky too that make it different than Twitter you cannot have a private account all right so it just basically encourages you know people to interact with other people nothing can be private you can mute people and that is private but you can have block lists that are public right all your likes are public all your posts are public everything's public except if you mute someone that's the only thing that's not public which is just like mmm TEA that is just drama I love it it's like more dramatic than having a top eight cuz it's just like wow Kathy muted like everybody like half the girls in the class I'm sure there's going to be some drama along with it if it comes to be the next Twitter and then so of course if you delete something on blue sky blue sky also deletes it on their end as well to kind of promise that stuff is deleted from the platform however screenshots are forever so you can't think you can't post something out of pocket and expect nobody to have a copy of it somewhere right so if you're into the fediverse though it's basically a place for decentralized social media of course Blue Sky doesn't like exist on its own it's not this like crazy thing they didn't create the fediverse there are competitors to Blue Sky and one of the big ones is Mastadon or madone (???) that I actually joined first because I heard that that was going to come out above Blue Sky because they do privacy better and allow people to curate their pages even more the issue with Mastadon that I had though okay so I---I like funny stuff right nobody was funny on Mastadon
don't everyone was so serious everyone was talking about blockchain it was just Echo chamber (lol) of a bunch of like dude Bros just like dude bro-ing 
there were no pictures uh well there was a cat like space okay but it wasn't as userfriendly as blue sky and also I jumped on to Blue Sky when it was popping already like it was at that growth so I might have just popped in at a at a better time than I did at mastadon I was just too early and I wasn't into the conversations that people were having on there at all so with mastadone basically you have your own server and then it allows you to make like little nodes so think of it as really similar to Discord. So. Discord is a chat room Reddit is a forum and blue sky is like microblogging and so was Twitter it was like micro blogging so on its own as it exists anyway mastadon

is like a different kind of platform than blue sky and I think that's why it was easier for Blue Sky to take off more especially because mastadon kind of didn't encourage people to like reach outside of their circles so with those starter packs and stuff like that people were really encouraged to communicate with each other but I didn't see that same vibe happening on mastadone but if you have a different feeling if you're team Mastadone let me know in the comments I think since like you know Tumblr Twitter X whatever it's kind of having this like downs slope and I think people want that like fresh format to kind of like shake everything off that they've done before and people don't mind starting new at this point and so I think that's why it's a good time for Blue Sky to come forward and really honestly replace Twitter or X I think it's a good time culturally for that to happen at least here in the states and will other stuff follow because you know Twitter is worldwide and I see like Japanese channels and stuff on Blue Sky but we will see what happens let me know if you guys are over in the UK EU or Asian countries or whatever how you guys are dealing with Twitter do you guys are you guys even aware of it and just now we're at 17 million users so yeah I was just like really interested in that happening like a whole platform kind of like essentially being abandoned for a new one like that's a really huge thing to happen just like culturally and interpersonally like people like can download their content and like move it to Blue Sky but you know like it's why some people are still on Facebook like that's where people keep their family pictures I guess people weren't so invested in Twitter in the same way but to leave a whole platform and your audience and get them to move over to another one that's a huge thing but I see accounts like slowly growing and growing more and people are finding each other y'know so that that's cool so if you guys were part of the jump let me know I personally I was never a Twitter person but I really do like blue sky and I feel like I like it because I didn't get on Twitter like when it started to be popular by the time I joined it, I was like not in the states so I like I don't know like it wasn't really a popular thing like in Korea like people like they didn't like use Twitter like that I don't know cuz we all use Kakao Talk so like we do stuff in there so whatever but I was never a Twitter person but you can't shut me up on Blue Sky I just yapyapyapyapyap
