Metabolic Health: 7 Reasons To Improve Yours!

Welcome to Sano Health Bursts. I’m Heather Richards Nutritional Therapist, Director of Nutrition at Sano and nutrition lead for the College of Medicine. Sano Health Bursts are short, informative, practical sessions discussing food, nutrition and lifestyle, helping you live a healthier life.

Today we'll be diving into the fascinating world of metabolic health and why it serves as the crucial foundation for overall health and well-being.

Metabolic health refers to the efficiency and balance of the various chemical processes that occur within our bodies to maintain life.

In simple terms, it’s about the production, storage and utilisation of energy. However, this involves many processes including digestion, nutrient utilisation and hormone regulation.

Our bodies are amazing but complicated and it's impossible to look at one health area without looking at the interrelationships with other body systems.

That said, when our metabolic health is functioning optimally, we have a strong foundation on which to build. Very similar to the foundations of a house. Without a strong foundation, everything else will crumble.

Good metabolic health sets the stage for a healthy mind and body.

So, let's explore why metabolic health is essential for overall wellbeing. First and foremost, it directly influences our energy levels, weight and body composition.

When you have good metabolic health and metabolic flexibility you are able to efficiently break down nutrients and utilise energy as and when required, preventing unwanted weight gain, promoting a healthy body composition and resulting in stable energy levels.

Metabolic flexibility allows you to easily switch between burning carbohydrates and fat as a fuel source in different circumstances when required. This means you won’t run out of energy and have to be constantly reaching for more food to fuel yourself.

If your glycogen stores, that’s your storage form of carbohydrate, run low you should be able to efficiently switch to burning fat for fuel.

Moreover, metabolic health plays a significant role in managing blood sugar levels. When our metabolism is in harmony, it enhances insulin sensitivity, reducing the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Proper blood sugar management not only supports energy levels but also protects against other health issues associated with high blood sugar.

Furthermore, a well-regulated metabolism contributes to cardiovascular health. It helps maintain healthy blood pressure levels, cholesterol levels and triglycerides, all of which are critical markers of heart health.

Metabolic health also has a profound impact on our mood and mental wellbeing. Proper nutrient absorption and energy production support brain function and neurotransmitter balance.

Insulin resistance that develops from poor metabolic health reduces brain energy and impacts mental health. Good metabolic health leads to improved cognitive function, enhanced mood and reduced risk of mood disorders.

The opposite is true of poor metabolic health and Alzheimer's disease is often referred to as type 3 diabetes.

As we age, metabolic health becomes even more crucial. It helps prevent the development of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Good metabolic health can also mitigate the impact of menopause on women's health, as we discussed in a previous episode.

Now that we understand the importance of metabolic health let's explore some practical strategies to support it through our diet and lifestyle choices.

First and foremost, let's talk about nutrition. As with many aspects of health, the food we eat profoundly influences our metabolic health. Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods such as proteins, healthy fats, vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Avoid or minimise processed and sugary foods, as they can lead to metabolic dysfunction.

Incorporate foods rich in essential nutrients like magnesium, which we discussed in the previous episode. Magnesium aids in energy production and insulin sensitivity, both of which are vital for metabolic health.

Moreover, consider adding spices like cinnamon and turmeric to your meals. These spices have been shown to have beneficial effects on metabolic health and can be easily incorporated into your daily diet.

Intermittent fasting is another strategy that has gained popularity for its potential benefits on metabolic health. By allowing the body to have periods of fasting, it can enhance metabolic flexibility and support weight management.

Intermittent fasting doesn’t need to be complicated. You fast overnight! Start by trying to ensure your ‘eating window’ is contained, say within 8-10 hours of your waking hours.

Regular physical activity is a key component of maintaining metabolic health. Engaging in a mix of aerobic exercises, strength training, and flexibility exercises can enhance metabolic health, promote muscle mass and improve overall health.

Lastly, prioritise quality sleep. Sleep is an often underestimated factor in metabolic health. Aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep each night, as it helps regulate hormones and supports overall metabolic function.

Remember, small changes in your lifestyle and diet can make a big difference in your metabolic health and, consequently, your overall wellbeing.
