00:02:19.585 --> 00:02:23.628 They bow down before their future king. 00:02:25.400 --> 00:02:30.865 Well, we're in the season of Advent, that four weeks that leads up to Christmas, and Advent means coming. 00:02:30.865 --> 00:02:39.769 So Advent is a time of preparation for Jesus and of course, at Christmas, christmas day gets a lot of focus. 00:02:39.769 --> 00:02:44.521 We focus on the nativity of Christ as first coming. 00:02:44.521 --> 00:02:48.306 But Christmas isn't the only reason for Advent. 00:02:48.306 --> 00:02:59.769 Advent is also a time for preparing Christ to come into our hearts, receiving Him into our hearts afresh or for the first time, and anticipating His future return. 00:03:01.300 --> 00:03:08.289 Of course our culture loves baby Jesus, gentle, harmless, like Simba. 00:03:08.289 --> 00:03:20.486 But, as Mr Beaver said, in the Lion, the witch in the wardrobe, he as land isn't safe, but he's good, he's the king, I tell you. 00:03:20.486 --> 00:03:31.157 You know, when we divorce the baby and the manger from the man, we're actually celebrating something other than the real Jesus. 00:03:31.157 --> 00:03:57.532 We risk creating a myth, one we've tamed and associate with other things in our culture, like family, which is that's good, but shopping really events more than the true call the king makes on our lives and we often forget as a culture that this Christmas cub grows up to be one day the lion of Judah. 00:03:57.532 --> 00:04:09.819 And the fullness of who Jesus is encompasses both gentleness it does encompass that but also power, and he's beyond anything we contain. 00:04:11.909 --> 00:04:30.699 So, roughly 30 years after Jesus was born, at Christmas John the Baptist began to prepare for Jesus' ministry, not with messages of comfort and a baby and a manger and all that stuff, but with dire warnings and with exhortations for the people to repent. 00:04:30.699 --> 00:04:50.509 This might seem an overly negative passage at Christmas and around our expectations of the holiday season, but to truly grasp the good news of Christmas we really need to reckon with the true identity of Jesus as the coming king and the bad news. 00:04:50.509 --> 00:04:55.334 That is the reason that Jesus came in the first place, that he came to address. 00:04:55.334 --> 00:05:04.654 When the crowds came out to see John, he welcomed them, but he baptized them with this message of repentance. 00:05:04.654 --> 00:05:06.754 They confessed their sins. 00:05:06.754 --> 00:05:15.622 Revival seems to have been stirring, yeah, but when some of the religious leaders come, john ramps up a little bit. 00:05:15.622 --> 00:05:21.098 It's more than a little suspicious, and he had a warning for them, and it's in two parts. 00:05:21.098 --> 00:05:38.740 And the first, he said a day of wrath is coming, a day when God pours out His judgment and divine fury, a day when he's going to right wrong, restore justice and shine a light into the darkness. 00:05:40.970 --> 00:05:46.583 Now, the idea of God's wrath can make us feel understandably uncomfortable. 00:05:46.583 --> 00:05:49.237 Isn't God all about love? 00:05:49.237 --> 00:05:51.831 Well, yes, he is. 00:05:51.831 --> 00:06:05.117 But in a world of sin and evil and injustice such as fills our newsfeeds, can we really have love without anger as well? 00:06:05.117 --> 00:06:09.093 Just bringing it back to home? 00:06:09.093 --> 00:06:16.178 For those of us who are parents, what parent would not get angry if someone hurt our kids? 00:06:16.178 --> 00:06:17.641 Why do we get angry? 00:06:17.641 --> 00:06:18.673 Because we don't love our kids? 00:06:18.673 --> 00:06:19.620 Of course not. 00:06:19.620 --> 00:06:32.540 It's because we do love our kids, and so it is with God and the Old Testament particularly and the New, but the Old it's the precursor names a number of things that incur God's anger. 00:06:32.829 --> 00:06:38.377 God's wrath Worshiping false idols, false gods, was one. 00:06:38.377 --> 00:06:48.379 Exploiting and mistreating God's people, treating holy things casually, as if they're nothing, just every day. 00:06:48.379 --> 00:07:01.713 Disobedient to God's covenant Now, some of these things were specific to Israel, but not all of them and the nations were also subject to God's wrath. 00:07:01.713 --> 00:07:04.882 That was the Old Testament. 00:07:04.882 --> 00:07:23.425 We still live in a world that doesn't just indulge in but actually embraces pride, worshiping false idols of different sorts we may not call them gods, but things like money and all sorts of things. 00:07:23.425 --> 00:07:32.463 We live in a world that exploits people as much, if not more there's more ways probably to exploit people now than there's ever been. 00:07:32.463 --> 00:07:54.906 We live in a world that refuses God's grace, and really, in such a world, justice and righteousness demand an answer, and love has to give one, and so a day will come when God gives that answer and writes every wrong. 00:07:54.906 --> 00:08:03.826 A day to look forward to if you love justice, but it's not such good news if you love evil. 00:08:03.826 --> 00:08:07.843 So that's the first part of John's message. 00:08:07.843 --> 00:08:20.069 A day of wrath is coming, and the second is related to it is that the coming one, jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit that's good news. 00:08:20.069 --> 00:08:27.783 We'll talk about that in a minute and with fire Now, putting the Holy Spirit and fire together like that. 00:08:27.843 --> 00:08:35.682 You might think of something like revival fire or being set on fire for God, which is a good thing, but I don't think that's what John's talking about here. 00:08:35.682 --> 00:08:41.602 Fire is only ever used of either physical fire or of judgment. 00:08:41.602 --> 00:08:43.044 In the Gospels. 00:08:43.044 --> 00:08:53.208 Here we see that Jesus is going to clear out the threshing floor and burn the char in fire. 00:08:53.208 --> 00:08:57.024 I think this is what John is talking about the fire of judgment. 00:08:57.024 --> 00:09:02.244 Even this idea of threshing is itself a pretty violent image. 00:09:02.244 --> 00:09:10.945 To thresh grain, you have to beat it around and you're trying to separate the outer hus of the chaff from the actual kernel. 00:09:10.945 --> 00:09:19.403 And the way they did that traditionally was they beat it with rods or drove over it with wheels and oxen and stuff like that to separate the two. 00:09:19.403 --> 00:09:29.839 The chaff, john says, is those who don't produce the fruit of repentance, those who don't change their hearts and their ways. 00:09:29.839 --> 00:09:35.125 They're the ones that will be burnt up in the fire, a fire that never goes out. 00:09:35.125 --> 00:09:40.700 It's a picture of eternal judgment Again at Christmas. 00:09:40.700 --> 00:09:42.163 Look, you know, there's some. 00:09:43.264 --> 00:09:45.908 It's not a message we particularly like nowadays. 00:09:45.908 --> 00:09:47.914 Some people say, oh, that's not Jesus. 00:09:47.914 --> 00:09:53.364 He's full of grace and love, and yes, he is, but if it seems a bit extreme and not very Jesus. 00:09:53.364 --> 00:10:02.043 He remember in Matthew 10, 34, jesus himself said I did not come to bring peace, but a sword the challenging words. 00:10:02.043 --> 00:10:09.802 So this baby born in Bethlehem came to judge the world and purge it with divine fire. 00:10:09.802 --> 00:10:13.436 The lion of Judah entered our world. 00:10:13.436 --> 00:10:18.696 Changes up the sweet scene at the manger a bit, doesn't it? 00:10:18.696 --> 00:10:25.836 Baby lion may be cute, but it still has sharp claws and pointy teeth. 00:10:31.269 --> 00:10:36.643 So Isaiah the prophet said make straight paths for him. 00:10:36.643 --> 00:10:38.075 That was John the Baptist's job. 00:10:38.075 --> 00:10:44.522 How do we make straight paths for Jesus, then, in this Advent season? 00:10:44.522 --> 00:10:54.802 Well, john's first part of his message was to repent, and the fruit and the proof of repentance would be evident in a changed life. 00:10:54.802 --> 00:10:58.014 That was the fruit, a life lived God's way. 00:10:58.014 --> 00:11:02.096 We talk about plenty here. 00:11:02.096 --> 00:11:03.815 Repentance means to turn around. 00:11:04.389 --> 00:11:33.841 So, in the things we've talked about, from idolatry, worshiping other things, worshiping self to worshiping God, from exploiting people to loving and serving them, from dishonoring holy things to treating them with reverence, from disobedience and faithlessness to faithful obedience, doing what God has commanded what is commanded for our good and for his glory. 00:11:33.841 --> 00:11:44.375 You know, jesus said the whole law can be summed up in just four words Love God, love people. 00:11:44.375 --> 00:11:46.772 That's pretty much it. 00:11:46.772 --> 00:11:55.716 Now I want to be a bit careful here, because you might rightly point out that aren't we saved by faith, not our works? 00:11:55.716 --> 00:11:58.275 And yes, we are saved by faith. 00:11:59.070 --> 00:12:04.160 It's through Jesus' finished work on the cross that God made the way for us to be saved. 00:12:04.160 --> 00:12:18.960 On the cross, jesus and this is the great news of Christmas on the cross, jesus took that wrath, that wrath of God, onto himself, and so for the believer, here's the good news the day of wrath has already happened. 00:12:18.960 --> 00:12:22.855 That's good news. 00:12:22.855 --> 00:12:26.796 There's no more wrath for us. 00:12:26.796 --> 00:12:35.357 So the first step in repentance is putting our trust in the one who bore God's wrath so we can participate in His righteousness. 00:12:35.357 --> 00:12:43.017 But here's the thing you can't have faith in Jesus if you don't always have also have faithfulness to Jesus. 00:12:43.017 --> 00:12:52.182 They're the same word in the Greek it's our faith that saves us, or God's grace more strictly, through our faith. 00:12:52.182 --> 00:12:57.259 But as the letter of James says, we prove our faith by what we do. 00:12:57.259 --> 00:13:03.296 The evidence of faith in Jesus is faithfulness to Jesus. 00:13:03.296 --> 00:13:10.836 So we need to repent and the second is we need to be baptized. 00:13:12.950 --> 00:13:23.135 John baptized the people as a symbol of repentance, to prepare their hearts for Jesus, but he pointed to a greater baptism, baptism with the Holy Spirit. 00:13:23.135 --> 00:13:27.081 Now it's as if well, it's not as if we are. 00:13:27.081 --> 00:13:31.315 You know, jesus came to baptize with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 00:13:31.315 --> 00:13:34.817 We're all going to receive a baptism. 00:13:34.817 --> 00:13:37.176 It's like Jesus offers us a choice. 00:13:37.176 --> 00:13:45.397 We can receive a baptism in the fire of judgment by that bushfires that went through Wannaroo recently. 00:13:45.397 --> 00:13:47.221 They just burned everything up. 00:13:47.221 --> 00:13:48.403 What a mess. 00:13:48.403 --> 00:13:51.616 Well, actually not a mess, there's not much left. 00:13:51.616 --> 00:14:01.552 Or we can be baptized with the Holy Spirit, who transforms our hearts and makes us into something beautiful. 00:14:01.552 --> 00:14:04.835 But we will be baptized. 00:14:04.835 --> 00:14:12.793 In John 3, jesus said that to enter God's kingdom we must be born again, born of water and the Spirit. 00:14:13.831 --> 00:14:15.355 The thing is in being baptized. 00:14:15.355 --> 00:14:19.652 I say we have to be baptized, but it's not our action, is it the thing that is done to us? 00:14:19.652 --> 00:14:25.424 You can't baptize yourself. 00:14:25.424 --> 00:14:29.416 You kind of can, but it sort of doesn't really count in Christian theology. 00:14:29.416 --> 00:14:32.615 If you try to baptize yourself, someone has to baptize you. 00:14:32.615 --> 00:14:35.498 It's the same with the Holy Spirit. 00:14:35.498 --> 00:14:37.375 You can't baptize yourself. 00:14:37.436 --> 00:14:38.879 In the Holy Spirit, only God. 00:14:38.879 --> 00:14:45.423 It's a sovereign act of God to bring about that renewal in the Holy Spirit. 00:14:45.423 --> 00:14:52.583 You can't control it, but you can prepare for it by turning to God in faith and in repentance. 00:14:52.583 --> 00:14:59.780 So how do we even know if we've been baptized by the Spirit then? 00:14:59.801 --> 00:15:05.534 If it's so mysterious and we seem so helpless in it, well, we see it by the fruit of repentance. 00:15:05.534 --> 00:15:12.942 If you see someone who's on a journey, not of perfection, they're moving towards perfection. 00:15:12.942 --> 00:15:16.500 But very most of the time we're not perfect on this journey, are we? 00:15:16.500 --> 00:15:38.759 But we see increasing love, we see increasing holiness towards God and His people, and we see that we see someone who has the Holy Spirit at work in their heart and their life and they're part of the week that's gathered into the barns that God is preparing. 00:15:38.759 --> 00:15:44.397 So the bad news is that a day of Roth is coming. 00:15:44.397 --> 00:15:47.676 God's going to judge sin and evil. 00:15:48.049 --> 00:16:15.309 The great news of Christmas is that Jesus has come to bear God's wrath and as we reflect on Advent, we consider Jesus coming not only at the first Christmas, but His coming today into the heart of every believer by His Spirit, and we look with anticipation to the day when the Lion of Judah returns Now. 00:16:15.309 --> 00:16:25.023 Of course, for those of us who have been walking with Jesus for a long time, this is a very familiar message I'm preaching to the converted, but it always does us well to check our hearts. 00:16:25.023 --> 00:16:28.690 Advent is a great time for us just to recalibrate. 00:16:28.690 --> 00:16:34.874 Do you know that in the Christian calendar, the beginning of the liturgical year was last week, with Advent 1? 00:16:34.874 --> 00:16:39.058 Week 1, that's the beginning of our Christian calendar. 00:16:39.058 --> 00:16:41.456 Traditionally, it's a great chance, isn't it? 00:16:41.710 --> 00:17:01.119 Just to reflect and start to think about the coming year, reflect on the year that's gone, and are we then in a place where we can still receive Jesus and the transforming power of His Spirit to continue to work in us, and do we look forward to the day when he's going to return?
