🎯 In this episode you'll learn / 今回学べること:
• How to suggest plans gently — "Maybe... we could do both?" • How to express preferences without sounding pushy • Natural fillers Japanese textbooks don't teach you — "Mmm," "kind of," "you know," "no worries" • The English-Japanese bridge for two key words: harmony (調和) and rushed (急かされる)

1. Opening
Host:
Welcome back to the Social English Podcast.
I'm glad you're here.
This is Episode 288.
Today, we are exploring the Green communication style.
💡1. 「communication style(コミュニケーションスタイル)」=人が他の人と話すときのやり方やパターン。グリーン、レッド、ブルー、イエローなど、タイプがあります。
Green communicators are calm, kind, and peaceful.
They want everyone to feel comfortable and relaxed.
You might hear them say things like:
"No worries."
"Whatever works for you."
"Let's keep it relaxed."
"As long as everyone is comfortable, I'm good."
By the end of this episode, you'll understand how Green communicators think —
and how to use their phrases in your own English conversations.
Let's get started.
2. What Is a Green Communicator?
Host:
So, what exactly is a Green communicator?
A Green communicator values peace.
They don't like conflict.
💡 2.「conflict(コンフリクト)」=争い、もめごと、意見のぶつかり合い。
They don't want people to feel stressed or uncomfortable.
Their goal is to help the group feel good.
Here's an example.
Imagine three friends are deciding where to eat.
A Green communicator might say:
"I'm okay with either place."
Or: "Whatever works for everyone."
Now, this doesn't mean they have no opinion.
It means they're choosing kindness first.
They want the conversation to stay easy and relaxed.
3. Common Green Phrases
Host:
Now let's look at some common Green phrases.
I'll say each one, give you the meaning, and then show you an example.
Try repeating each phrase out loud — it really helps!
Phrase 1: "No worries."
This means: "It's okay. Don't stress."
Example: "No worries. We can go later."
Phrase 2: "Whatever works for you."
This means: "I'm flexible. You decide."
💡 3.「flexible(フレキシブル)」=柔軟、状況に合わせて変えられる。「私はどちらでもいい、あなたに合わせるよ」という意味。
Example: "We can eat now or later. Whatever works for you."
Phrase 3: "Let's keep it relaxed."
This means: "Let's not make this stressful."
Example: "We don't need a big plan. Let's keep it relaxed."
Phrase 4: "I don't want to make a big deal out of it."
This means: "I don't want this to become a problem."
💡 4.「make a big deal out of it」=大げさにする、必要以上に問題にする。「そんなに深刻に考えなくていい」というニュアンスです。
Example: "It's okay. I don't want to make a big deal out of it."
Phrase 5: "As long as everyone is comfortable, I'm good."
This means: "I care about how everyone feels — not just myself."
💡 5.「as long as」=~である限り、~さえすれば。「みんなが快適である限り、私は大丈夫」という条件を表す表現です。
This is a very Green sentence. Remember it!
4. Dialogue Scene
Host:
Now let's listen to a conversation.
Picture this: it's a sunny Saturday morning on a beach boardwalk.
💡 6.「boardwalk(ボードウォーク)」=海岸や公園にある木や板で作られた遊歩道。
Three friends are taking a walk together.
Ava is American. Rafael is from Brazil — and today, he's our Green communicator.
Yumi is from Japan.
Listen carefully to how Rafael keeps the conversation calm and easy.
Clip Name: Episode_288_Green_Dialogue_Beach_Boardwalk.mp3
Ava:
This boardwalk is beautiful today. Do you two want coffee, or should we keep walking?
Yumi:
Coffee sounds nice, but I also want to see the ocean a little more.
Rafael:
No worries. We can do both. Maybe walk a little more, then get coffee?
Ava:
That actually sounds perfect.
Yumi:
Rafael, you always make everything feel so easy.
Rafael:
I just want everyone to enjoy the morning. No pressure.
Ava:
That's very Green communication.
Yumi:
Green means peaceful, right?
Ava:
Exactly. Green communicators keep the harmony.
💡 7.「harmony(ハーモニー)」=調和。全員が仲良く、バランスよく一緒にいられる状態。
Rafael:
Right. I don't like when people feel rushed or uncomfortable.
💡 8.「rushed(ラッシュト)」=急かされる、せかされる感じ。「rushed」は「rush(急ぐ)」の過去分詞で、形容詞として使われています。
Yumi:
I really like that. It feels calm.
Rafael:
Good. Ocean first, coffee after. Let's go.
5. Dialogue Breakdown
Host:
Let's break down what happened in that conversation.
💡9. 「break down」=分解する、細かく説明する。ここでは「会話を一つひとつ丁寧に見ていく」という意味。
Ava asks the group a question — coffee or keep walking?
Yumi isn't sure. She wants both.
The group needs to make a decision.
Watch what Rafael does.
He says: "No worries. We can do both."
He doesn't push anyone. He doesn't say "No, we're doing this."
He finds a calm solution that works for everyone.
That's classic Green communication.
💡 10.「classic(クラシック)」=ここでは「典型的な、まさにその通りの」という意味。「classic Green」=グリーンタイプの教科書通りの行動。
Then notice this word: "Maybe."
Rafael says: "Maybe walk a little more, then get coffee?"
The word "maybe" makes the sentence softer.
It doesn't sound demanding or too strong.
💡 11.「demanding(ディマンディング)」=要求が強い、命令的な。「Maybe」を使うと、命令ではなく提案のように聞こえます。日本語の「~かな?」「~はどう?」に近いニュアンスです。
Green communicators use soft words like this all the time:
"Maybe…" — "We can…" — "If you want…" — "That works for me." — "I'm okay with that."
And finally, Rafael says: "I just want everyone to enjoy the morning. No pressure."
💡 12.「No pressure.」=プレッシャーなし、強制しないよ、気にしなくていいよ。相手を安心させるためによく使うフレーズです。
That one line says everything about the Green style.
He's thinking about the group — not just himself.
6. Important Point for English Learners
Host:
Here's something important — especially for cross-cultural communication.
💡 13.「cross-cultural communication(クロスカルチャーコミュニケーション)」=異なる文化・国の人同士のコミュニケーション。
When a Green communicator says "Whatever works for you," you might think:
"Oh, they don't care. They have no opinion."
But that's not always true!
Many times, they do have a preference.
💡 14.「preference(プレファレンス)」=好み、どちらかといえばこっちがいいという気持ち。「I have a preference for coffee.」=「どちらかといえばコーヒーが好きです。」
They're just being kind. They don't want to pressure you.
So what can you do?
If someone says "I'm okay with anything," try asking:
"Are you sure?"
"What would you prefer?"
"Do you have a first choice?"
These questions are friendly and caring.
They give the Green communicator a chance to share their real feelings.
💡 15.日本語の「遠慮(えんりょ)」と似ています。グリーンタイプが「何でもいいよ」と言っても、本音では好みがある場合があります。「本当はどう思う?」と優しく聞いてあげると喜ばれることがあります。
7. Practice Section
Host:
Okay — practice time!
Repeat each phrase after me.
Say it slowly, calmly, and with a relaxed voice.
"No worries."
"Whatever works for you."
"We can do both."
"Maybe we can walk a little more."
"I just want everyone to feel comfortable."
"Let's keep it relaxed."
"I'm okay with either one."
"As long as everyone is good, I'm good."
Great job.
Here's an important tip about delivery:
💡 16.「delivery(デリバリー)」=ここでは「話し方、声の出し方」のこと。荷物の配達ではありません。
Green communication is not just about the words.
It's about your voice, too.
Keep your tone calm — not angry, not rushed, not too forceful.
Think of a peaceful, easy conversation.
That's the Green style.
8. Mini Quiz
Host:
Now it's quiz time!
