Literacy Blocks that Align with the Science of Reading -  Helping Dyslexic Children

I call my Literacy Blocks the 9 -Steps of Reading.

The Science of Reading says the program should be explicitly taught, structured, sequential, cumulative, comprehensive, flexible and emotionally sound. 

I love every lesson I teach! I continue to learn how every child’s brain is different, and I see the joy each child has when they are filling in those learning gaps and learning to read. 

Our 13th session is the perfect one to demonstrate how much a child can achieve in a short time revealing the flexibility built into my reading program.

Decoding requires phonological awareness, putting sounds together, first without letter symbols, then with the letters.  It also means phonics, and blending and segmenting words. Students should be able to hear and manipulate sounds in words, understand relationships between graphemes (written) and phonemes, and manipulate parts of words. Some three-letter words are parts of larger words. Some “nonsense” words are part of real words. These are the things I will demonstrate today in this lesson.
