Big Bend border battle
Interview featuring Joe Veyera
JIMMY: Up first, we’ll take a look at a controversial border project involving a national park in Texas. For more on that I’ve got Factal Senior Editor Joe Veyera.
JIMMY: Hello, Joe.
JOE: Hey, Jimmy. How's it going?
JIMMY: It goes well, and I'm glad you're here. Saw this story mentioning the words U.S. border controversy and national park, and knew you were just the person we needed to hear from. So, what exactly is going on with the situation in Texas?
JOE: Yes, so there's been a lot of developments in the past few days. On Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott announced a construction pause on a planned $1.7 billion project in Big Bend National Park in west Texas. There had been a months-long backlash to this project, and it really started to ramp up as work began and videos went viral showing bulldozers uprooting trees and clearing parkland. Several lawsuits had already been filed to stop construction, and there were a lot of concerns that went into play here. There were fears that this work would damage the natural landscape, it would disrupt wildlife migration, it would threaten Native American sites, and also hurt the local economy. So there were a lot of reasons for local stakeholders to be against this project, and now we've hit a pause.
JIMMY: And what's the latest? Have you seen any new developments?
JOE: Yes. So, Scott visited Big Bend on Thursday, and that was a day after he met with local stakeholders on the issues they have with the project in its current form. It was a bit of a – I guess the best way to put it is [a] step back from what he said last week, where he said the extent of the work would be: building one new access road, improving existing roads on the site, installing detection technology, and placing vehicle barriers in limited strategic locations. That's what [CBP] said. The quote from the press release last week was, we are not building “a 30-foot wall or stadium lighting." So the idea there was this is not as substantial as a project as people fear it might be, but we still saw that turnaround this week and the pause on the project.
JIMMY: What sort of reactions have you seen to this?
JOE: They've been pretty wide-ranging. Some have questioned the need for any sort of additional infrastructure. They cite the rough terrain of the park and a limited number of attempted border crossings between the U.S. and Mexico there to begin with. So let's talk about the Big Bend sector. That accounts for a fourth of the border, and that's more than just national park land – it's about 517 miles. Despite being a fourth of the border, it accounted for 1.3% of the apprehensions recorded by [CBP] in the fiscal year 2025, and that's a trend that has continued into this year in the numbers we've seen so far. This administration, though, has put a premium on curbing illegal border crossings at all cost. And you think back to President Trump's “big, beautiful wall” comments that “Mexico will pay for,” dating back to his first term. But in this particular instance, the pushback has been bipartisan, and we saw more than 40 members of the Texas State House, Democrats and Republicans alike, signing a letter calling on Gov. Greg Abbott to intervene in whatever way he could to put this project on pause or stop it entirely.
JIMMY: Well, considering all this, what do you think folks ought to be watching for next then?
JOE: There are a lot of open questions here. So first off, it's unclear when this pause will end now that we've got Scott on the ground in Big Bend talking with the community, and then, what changes the administration will move to make, if any, to the project in its current form. But at the end of the day, it has shown at least some level of willingness from this administration to take feedback from the communities impacted by the projects they're looking to do.
JIMMY: Well, Joe, we'll have to pause there for today, but as always, thank you so much for keeping such a close eye on things for us. Appreciate you.

Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C.

JIMMY: Spectators will be gathering in Washington, DC, starting Saturday for an IndyCar street race in the nation’s capital.
The event is part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Practices and qualifying races are set to begin on Saturday.
Last month, an FBI official said there were no credible threats being monitored in connection with the race.
Still, authorities are urging visitors and residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
Now, officials say a large number of uniformed officers will be deployed across Washington, D.C., with traffic control points in parts of the city.
Traffic impacts are expected to continue through September.
The FAA also plans to halt flights at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport for three hours on Sunday, though the exact timing could change.
Flights could also be impacted on Friday.
Organizers say hundreds of thousands of people are expected to attend the festivities, which will also be streamed online.
Singapore National Day rally

JIMMY: Singapore Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong will deliver his annual National Day Rally on Sunday.
The speech at ITE College Central in Ang Mo Kio is considered one of the government’s most important annual policy addresses.
It will be Wong’s third National Day Rally as prime minister.
One major focus is expected to be families and parenthood.
In his National Day message earlier this month, Wong said the government is reconsidering the cost of raising children, affordable childcare and other measures to reduce pressure on families.
He said more details would be announced at the rally.
The push has taken on greater urgency as Singapore’s resident total fertility rate fell to a historic low of 0.87 in 2025, down from 0.97 the previous year.
Now, the rally could provide an early indication of how the government plans to respond to the country’s rapidly shrinking birth rate.
Wong has already indicated that financial relief is coming, so the key things to watch will be the size of any new package and whether the measures will go beyond existing incentives.
Paraguay national doctors’ strike

JIMMY: A major doctors’ strike may begin in Paraguay on Monday.
The National Union of Doctors, known as Sinamed, has called for a five-day strike over working conditions.
The union has urged 11,000 medical professionals to take part.
Doctors are seeking better staffing in hospital wards, basic supplies and equipment, and higher salaries to account for the loss in purchasing power.
The union argues the action is necessary after exhausting other options.
Now, if the strike goes ahead, scheduled appointments will be suspended at hospitals nationwide.
Emergency services, however, will remain available throughout the strike.
Still, the action is expected to significantly reduce medical services across the country if it proceeds as planned.
Ukraine Independence Day

JIMMY: Ukraine will mark its Independence Day on Monday, with intelligence services warning of a potential increase in attacks around the holiday.
It will be the country’s fifth Independence Day since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in 2022.
Previous Independence Days have coincided with Russian mass strikes on Ukrainian cities, including attacks on civilian infrastructure that resulted in deaths.
Last year, Ukraine also carried out strikes on Russian territory around the holiday, targeting oil and gas infrastructure in the Leningrad region.
This year, the Ukrainian Center for Strategic Communications, citing U.S. intelligence, said Russia may be preparing a large-scale campaign against energy infrastructure.
Now, given Russia’s history of attacks around previous Independence Days, there is an increased risk of large-scale strikes on major Ukrainian cities.
Recent Russian strikes have targeted railway and port infrastructure, while residential areas in major cities also remain at risk.
