On this episode we tell an example of a country that is changing the laws dealing with creators.  Much like I was stating in the last episode.  Meanwhile, what do you keep on hand at home? I had not really thought about it.  I made a list to discuss. Do you know what "deepfakes" are?  Well Minnesota may have started off in the right direction. A Consistent Release Schedule

Yeah, well, it took us a while once I uh semi-retired, and that's what I tell people, semi-retired, to find a good schedule and then make it work. So we have been for the last month or so recording on Wednesday afternoon, and it seems to work pretty good. That gives me Monday or Tuesday to do a few things around the house, which I probably don't do much. I'm a little lazy.

So people that don't have a subscription, which all you have to do is punch in our email, to the website, they can still listen to it when our hosting page puts it up live. So there you go. That's what we've been doing for the last few months. Been more accurate about keeping that schedule, and we hope that somebody out there noticed.

Belize Proposal And Content Licensing Fears

go. So, not to be a uh bummer like I was last week and ranting and raving about some of the podcast uh stuff going on, but I got one more bit of news to add to that that I didn't have time last week to add. But on July the 23rd, uh there was a new ruling over at Belize B-E-L-I-Z-E. I think I pronounced that right, the country of Belize. Um, they have had a new broadcasting act 2026 proposed, which will take all of the broadcasters, the streaming services, and social media content creators under government oversight and licensing requirements. And that's exactly what I was talking about happening. And uh I just didn't have enough time to point out that it's already starting to take place. Now, again, this is not America, so you can quivel about that, but they have uh decided to look at the citizens being used or being targeted for generating advertising and sponsorship and stuff like that, and those people that are doing that, like the broadcasters, social media, anything that's on the internet, will have to uh have an official license or s secure an explicit exemption. Now, how that um breaks out, I don't know, but it's the exemption is gonna come from the Belize Broadcasting Authority. So I don't know if that's kind of like a government agency for them. But again, uh when there's money involved, then the laws start getting thrown out there and people have to um uh fit a certain organized situation or um cookie cutter look and act um because people want control, they want that money, and once we start seeing that kind of adaptation here in our country for our podcast, then it won't be much longer before they start adapting laws and stuff to control the people into those type of views and looks and all that. So that's what I was trying to say. Just beware of it, be on the lookout, and hopefully it won't happen.

Oh, not only that, but if they make it so you have to get a license like they do everything else, uh haircuts, you gotta get a license to cut 'em. Uh what? There's so much out there that you know people were able to do freely, but because they wanted everybody to do a good job. And I don't see never mind, I'm not gonna go there. You had to buy a license, go to school, and there you go. Their control is there.

What We Keep At Home Today

Oh, let's don't even go there. But anyhow, what was you talking about about keep on hand at home?

Oh yeah. Well my initial comment was, what do you keep on hand at home? So I run across an article that talked about ancient Egyptians and eight household items that they kept on hand, and I went, Oh, let me think about eight that we keep on hand. And this is kind of give you out there something to think about before I start talking about this story, which I thought was kind of funny, but anyway, um, so eight things. I listed eight things, and I wasn't sure where the article was gonna go, but I uh wanted to list it to kind of give me an idea where I was at. So when I read it, you know, I might kind of relate. So what have you got in your household that you will keep on hand? Eight things. So here's my list soap, paper products such as paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates, maybe, napkins, you know, paper products, even writing paper products, food, tools. Now I may have been too generalized with this list, I don't know. TV, most people have TV or radio for entertainment, and the radio and the TV is not as popular as they used to be because people are using their phone. And believe it or not, I didn't put a phone down here. Uh computer, I did put a computer down because I use mine for uh all kinds of purposes, and I also play games on it. Clothes, duh, you know, we gotta have clothes, we've got to have it on hand, or we're gonna run around naked, which some people might like that, but we're not gonna go there right now. And then brushes and combs. Brushes can mean hairbrushes, toothbrush, cleaning brush, but there's a lot of brushes. So, like I said, I may have done a little bit too generalized for that.

It is eight household items every ancient Egyptian family owned. There you go. There's eight of them on the list, and I'm just gonna go straight to the list. All right, I think since we're talking about ancient Egyptians and they built the pyramids, supposedly, and they had a lot of stone products. I'd say some kind of stone carving device or a rock carver or something.

Well, that's a good guess, but you're like me, you're overthinking it. Okay, here's the list, and it may surprise you. The number one uh item on the list is tweezers. That's right, tweezers. What? Tweezers? Yeah, and they actually had a picture on there, so if you're interested, go look that article up and find the picture of the tweezers. The next is socks, and they had a picture of the socks too. Now I'm not sure uh they said that's a pain pair of ancient Egyptian toe socks. I don't know how anyway, no, I ain't gonna go there. Third is querns. Q-U-E-R-N-S, not sure I pronounced that right, but it is uh a thing that they ground corn and stuff with, apparently. And then the next on the list was pots, and yeah, we all should have thought of that. They had a lot of pots, they kept everything in pots, and number five is really blew me away. Notebooks. Yeah, notebooks, and uh the notebook they had a picture of looks like a rock with a picture on it. And there you go, that's their notebook for that day and age. And the next one on the list was stone pillows. That's right, stone pillows. Boy, you're talking about a hard life. Sleeping on a stone pillow, man.

You got the right yikes. Um it looks more like a U-shaped thing that was uh built up on a little bit of a ledge and they could lay their head on it. I don't know. Doesn't sound very comfortable, but anyhow, the next thing was board games, and they got a picture of a board game made out of rock with little um uh items on top of it that you could move around, and I'm not sure if it what what the game was. And then eight but not least, you ladies will really like this cosmetics and perfumes. Every Egyptian household had cosmetics and perfumes.

A Country Name Change

And while we're on the subject of countries, uh Nauru, and I'm not sure I'm pronouncing that correctly, N-A-U-R-U. It's supposedly the world's third smallest country, has changed its name. Yep, that's right. They went from Nauru to Now Eru. Ero, and it spelled it's a name. It's the Republic of Nauru. Now Eru. Ero Nao Ero. And it's spelled N-A-O-E-R-O. And they did that because their country's identity, their people, and the language is more of that spelling and that pronunciation than it was the original name. So I thought that was pretty neat that they're changing it for the people, or supposedly. I don't know too much about that country or that change, but I thought it was worth bringing up. The problem the they've got about twelve thousand residents. So I know a lot of uh towns here in Illinois that's got uh over twelve thousand residents, but anyhow they don't make that less important.

SpaceX Debris To Crash The Moon

okay, we've got a story that was just posted the other day um that deals with the moon and the moon getting a new scar.

And how do you give the moon a scar?

Well, Sunny, I'm glad you asked because I'm going to tell you. Apparently, SpaceX, they had a rocket segment that was on track to slam into the moon uh this morning at around 2 35 a.m. Eastern time. Now I want you to hear these words. Are you ready for this?

All right. Okay, according to this article, this is in 1440, by the way, um, a discarded SpaceX rocket segment was on track to slam into the moon this morning at around 2 35 a.m. Eastern time. Likely, likely, you hear that? Likely creating a carrot crater about 16 feet deep and 65 to 100 feet wide. The unintentional impact offers scientists a rare chance to study human-made lunar collisions, which could become more common with the rise of space debris.

And what's the significance of likely creating?

Well, apparently it's likely to do it, but they don't know if it did it. So they're saying likely creating a character, a character, a crater about 16 feet deep. See, they are estimating the size of it. They're estimating that it was created by a what? A segment of SpaceX. So I don't know if they're making it up and you know, who knows? But I will read you the top part of New York Times article to come out on August the fourth, preparing us for this. A SpaceX rocket is headed for a crash on the moon. The second stage of a Falcon nine rocket, which sent two private landers to the Moon last year will collide with the Moon early Wednesday morning. The four ton rocket stage will hit the moon at five thousand four hundred miles per hour, more than twice the speed of a bullet shot from a rifle, generating enough heat to produce a flash of light. The sunlight plume of debris and dust will then rise and fall for several minutes. However, Mr. Gray described the visibility as quite iffy. The flash may not be bright and the bloom the plume may not rise high enough, washed out against the brightness of the moon's surface. So there you go. They describe this magnificent thing that's going to happen, but it's iffy. It may not do that, it may not be bright enough, you may not be able to see it. They said you couldn't see it with the naked eye anyway, but you might be able to see it with a telescope. Oh, yeah, that's right. Might. You might.

Yeah. Oh, you know, if you take these stories at face value, um they are thrilling and they describe some fabulous things that's gonna happen or uh are happening. But if you start reading the articles, and we've done this before before with all kinds of different articles, they just kind of mix you up. You're not sure if you're reading fact, science fiction, if it's gonna happen, it's not gonna happen. And uh, you know, that was supposedly at 2 35 a.m. this morning, and I haven't seen anything on the news about them spotting that. Now they knew. where it was gonna hit. Oh wait a minute, maybe they couldn't see that part of the moon. There'll be an excuse. Maybe we'll get to see some type of video um a com compilation of pictures or something put together and I'm really making fun of them right now.

Well I think we should all right so let's do the earthquake report all right these numbers were taken this afternoon on 852026 go back on the seven day report which our seven day report starts today and goes back to the 29th last time we did the update and we have two 6.0 earthquakes during that program and they were as of today or from last night. Anyhow one's a 6.3 and it's in the Grammatic Islands and then another 6.3 in the Philippine Islands which are pretty good size earthquakes. Anything six and over is a pretty significant earthquake but I am seeing for the last two weeks we've only had a couple 6.0 and above which is kind of a good sign um we've had there's been a few days where the earthquakes have got pretty high but for the most part they've been around 400 or lower for the total amount of earthquakes which is kind of nice now we've had for the sun we've been trying to keep an eye on the sun also and the sun has had a little bit of uptick on the second of August and the third of August we had a um a flare jump out and uh we had a 5.67 KP storm come in uh on the second and a four point three three um which was an unsettled part of the storm on uh 83 26. So there you go and then on 84 it started settling back down at to 4.00 uh that's the the noise generated from that storm that was hitting us but not a lot of activity coming out of the sun yay now for the ham operators that will make conditions a little bit less enjoyable because you don't get as much activity from you know the quiet sun but radios still work uh they're just not as great I'll put it that way all right I don't know how people are gonna take this particular uh news article but I'm gonna give it to you anyway.

Minnesota Deepfake Nudification Ban

Oh sure you are Bruce just let us have it all right well this is talking about nudity oh no no you better not let us have it yep we are gonna let you have it and I'm gonna try to adjust my microphone there you go okay so um this is about a nudification ban the nation's first ban on tools allowing users to generate non-consensual nudified content from images or video of fully clothed people went into effect in Minnesota's or Minnesota Saturday after a judge denied a last minute suspension request from Elon Musk Elon Musk what and that's exactly how I reacted I went why is he doing a request for suspension uh anyway I didn't read any more into it I just got the notification that they had passed that ban uh in the news so I um went back and looked it up and there it is so apparently since about 2022 uh there's been a lot of people using generative AI to produce content and what that means is they've been taking pictures of people fully clothed and these AIs have been stripping the clothing off of them now the they may not look exactly what they would look like underneath but the imagination does the rest so they're creating fakes of real people and and they're doing this with voice and there's a lot of um fakery fakery going on um here's what they say a deep fake is a deep fake is an AI generated synthetic media that fabricates or replicates a real person's likeness voice or both making targets appear to say or do actions that never occurred the technology relies on two dominant architectures so basically they're faking people out by making fake instances of a real person and it's skyrocketed and it estimated 96 to 98 percent of which is explicit and nearly all of it involves women largely done without the person's knowledge such tools have been used by high schoolers to make explicit images of female students and there's a court case just uh where I think there was two high school kid males that were um sentenced for this just here the other day and some of them explicit deep face included including some of children occurred in April under the Federal Take It Down Act. So there you go it's a big deal and you may not like hearing about it but AI is being utilized for this purpose um and there's a big trend on uh mu Musk's own grok chatbot chat chat bot and that's what this article was talking about um being in actually some of them including children I guess but anyway it all needs to be taken down.

Well it's a big deal and uh it's been happening but anyway Minnesota passed a law against it so there you go we got some good out of it and the hearing's set for August 19th to decide whether the to pause the ban while legal challenges proceed so we'll have to pay attention to what they do but there it is AI being used for not so good uh purposes and I can't imagine n reading this part of the article and anybody not have heard of deep fakes. Now there may be some people but they're probably not listening to me.

I know when it first started happening uh I was in a uh computer servicing uh repair business uh for my older company and it was coming across a lot there was actually um web pages dedicated to that you pick a picture of somebody and they would do that to it uh free of charge at first I don't know if apparently they must have started charging later but who knows but yeah there was a bunch of them popped up and uh wow yeah anyway I'm glad that I'm not in that right now yeah I'm glad you're not either yeah there's some parts of the business I miss but getting that garbage on the computers and have to clean it up don't miss that a bit yeah yeah anyhow onward yes you are very right on word well let's talk a little bit about the weather shall we I think we shall well as we start out let's talk a little bit or

Wildfire Smoke, Air Quality, And Weather Check

first of all about Spokane Washington we have uh several listeners up there one of them happens to be family another one happens to be somebody that helped me get started with my um narration of my podcast emblem and uh so you know they're pretty close to me up there and there's a few other um listeners up there and I want to keep those um in my prayers and I want to ask you guys to keep them in the prayers apparently that fire has come over to Spokane and it's got right into the edge of town um there was a couple of my listeners that had to evacuate their houses uh this weekend or week it's what Wednesday sometime earlier um and we've talked to them they're all right but I'm not sure about their houses and you know any of that could be scary for people uh dealing with it so I want you to have keep them in your prayers so we're gonna talk about them first and see what the weather looks like.

So anyway the temperature today's right now is 85 the humidity is 17 degrees the wind's coming out of the west southwest at three miles an hour the UV index is seven and the air quality is ready for this 162 unhealthy but the reason it's so high is because that smoke I'm sure and uh I didn't mention it last week but I put a picture on my website and I was going to mention on the episode and I got on that rant and run out of time and just didn't do a bunch of stuff I wanted to do. But uh one of the listeners from Upper in Spokane sent me a picture of the sunrise that morning over the somebody's house I wasn't sure if it was theirs or uh a neighbor's but it's engulfed in that smoke that was coming in and this was last week before it got really close and they had to evacuate but it's a beautiful picture. It makes the sun look abnor abnormal it looks like a fake but it's actually taken with a phone um so they didn't fake it but this it almost looks like the sun is in front of the clouds which is really weird um but I s if you haven't seen it on my website if you're not a subscriber go to my homepage and type in your email hit subscribe and then when I post anything like that you should get it now if you've done that and you're still not getting that stuff email me at the uglyquacking duck at gmail dot com and I'll look into it.
