in the book of John. 00:05:20.800 --> 00:05:25.040 And one of the things that we realize as we look at these statements is Jesus is not joking. 00:05:25.360 --> 00:05:27.920 Every single word that Jesus says, He means. 00:05:28.160 --> 00:05:34.639 Every single statement that Jesus makes about himself carries weight, not just for eternity, but in our lives today. 00:05:35.839 --> 00:05:45.199 And so we've been walking through these seven statements that Jesus makes about himself in the book of John, and we move to John chapter 11, verse 25 today, where Jesus makes this statement. 00:05:45.839 --> 00:05:49.680 He says, I am the resurrection and the life. 00:05:51.600 --> 00:06:01.439 You see, every single I am statement that Jesus makes, it's grounded, it's it gets its origin in a human need. 00:06:03.120 --> 00:06:06.639 For people who are in darkness, Jesus says, I'm the light of the world. 00:06:07.120 --> 00:06:10.639 For people who need guidance, Jesus says, I am the good shepherd. 00:06:11.120 --> 00:06:15.839 For people who feel disconnected, Jesus says, I am the vine. 00:06:16.639 --> 00:06:22.480 For people who feel like they need protection, Jesus says, I am the gate. 00:06:22.959 --> 00:06:29.839 And here we come to John chapter 11, verse 25, and Jesus says, I am the resurrection and the life. 00:06:30.959 --> 00:06:34.319 Like there's this human need that we all face death. 00:06:35.040 --> 00:06:43.920 And what Jesus is talking about here is not just a physical death and not just a spiritual death, but maybe today you're here, maybe you're watching online, and there is a part of you that has died. 00:06:44.000 --> 00:06:45.600 There's a dream in your life that's died. 00:06:45.759 --> 00:06:49.600 You feel like your marriage has died, there's a relationship that's beyond repair. 00:06:49.920 --> 00:06:52.000 Maybe for some of you, trust has died. 00:06:52.160 --> 00:06:53.839 Maybe for some of you, hope has died. 00:06:54.000 --> 00:07:00.399 Maybe you have this belief that you are too far gone, that it's too late for you. 00:07:00.639 --> 00:07:02.319 It's too late for you to have a new beginning. 00:07:02.399 --> 00:07:09.439 It's too late to have hope. 00:07:10.879 --> 00:07:15.279 And into our hearts and into our story, Jesus speaks this truth. 00:07:15.600 --> 00:07:19.199 I am the resurrection and the life. 00:07:19.439 --> 00:07:23.439 No matter what death you may be facing, eventually, you know, the death rate is 100%. 00:07:23.839 --> 00:07:25.360 One out of one people die. 00:07:26.160 --> 00:07:32.240 But beyond our physical death, Jesus wants to bring life not just to your eternity, but to your life today. 00:07:32.399 --> 00:07:38.720 He wants to bring resurrection, not just to your eternity at the second coming, but to your life today. 00:07:38.879 --> 00:07:42.079 Jesus wants to resurrect some things that may have died. 00:07:42.639 --> 00:07:49.920 So what I want to do today is I want to go back to the beginning of John chapter 11 and work our way to verse 25. 00:07:50.000 --> 00:08:02.879 Because the context of what Jesus is talking about in John chapter 11 is as important as the statement he makes, because as we see the context, we understand why he says, I am the resurrection and the life. 00:08:03.199 --> 00:08:05.759 Well, let's start in John chapter 11, verse 1. 00:08:06.000 --> 00:08:08.160 Now, a man named Lazarus was sick. 00:08:08.399 --> 00:08:11.519 He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 00:08:11.680 --> 00:08:19.600 This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. 00:08:19.839 --> 00:08:24.399 So the sisters sent word to Jesus, Lord, the one you love is sick. 00:08:24.560 --> 00:08:30.800 Now, I want to stop there because John wants to give us context for who this family is. 00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:36.000 This is the first time in John's Gospel that the name Lazarus appears. 00:08:36.639 --> 00:08:44.000 So Jesus has this very close relationship with Lazarus, but John assumes that his readers are not going to know who Lazarus is. 00:08:44.080 --> 00:08:52.960 And so he connects Lazarus to Mary and her sister Martha because the readers, John assumes, are going to know exactly who Mary and Martha are. 00:08:53.200 --> 00:08:56.960 We see Mary and Martha pop up all over the public ministry of Jesus. 00:08:57.039 --> 00:09:06.559 And a lot of scholars believe that Lazarus probably had some type of job, some type of thing that kept him from traveling with Jesus, but it did not keep Mary and Martha from traveling with Jesus. 00:09:06.639 --> 00:09:11.600 And so we see him in different environments, in different teachings, at different miracles, at different people's houses. 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:14.559 Mary and Martha are all throughout the Gospels. 00:09:14.639 --> 00:09:17.039 They're a part of the traveling ministry of Jesus. 00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:22.559 And so John says, hey, if you don't know who Lazarus is, he's the brother of Mary and Martha. 00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:32.080 And so the readers would have known exactly who Lazarus is, and that Jesus, this was not a random guy, this was not an acquaintance, this was not just a high bye friend. 00:09:32.159 --> 00:09:35.039 This was not just somebody that, you know, they were friends on social media. 00:09:35.200 --> 00:09:37.039 This was somebody that Jesus did life with. 00:09:37.279 --> 00:09:38.799 He loved Lazarus. 00:09:39.840 --> 00:09:42.399 There was a high affection there. 00:09:43.279 --> 00:09:49.679 And so Lazarus gets sick, and Mary and Martha, they send word to Jesus. 00:09:50.559 --> 00:09:53.200 See, death reminds us that we need Jesus. 00:09:54.960 --> 00:10:02.240 When we're facing death, it reminds us that Jesus is our only hope. 00:10:02.559 --> 00:10:04.559 And for Lazarus, the medicine wasn't working. 00:10:04.639 --> 00:10:06.159 The doctors had done all that they could do. 00:10:06.399 --> 00:10:13.120 Lazarus appears to not be getting better, only to be getting worse, and Mary and Martha begin to freak out. 00:10:13.840 --> 00:10:22.559 And they've gone through all the physical remedies they possibly can, they've uh consulted all the doctors they possibly can, they've given Lazarus all of the chances they possibly can. 00:10:23.200 --> 00:10:27.440 And so they pray a prayer of desperation. 00:10:27.600 --> 00:10:31.279 They send word to Jesus that they need he needs to place where they realize that Jesus is all they have. 00:11:02.159 --> 00:11:07.919 Have you ever noticed how quickly we we pray when everything falls apart? 00:11:08.879 --> 00:11:18.399 When our marriage is good and the kids are good and the bank account's full and the job is going well, the prayer's optional. 00:11:19.360 --> 00:11:23.840 When the doctor comes and says, I'm sorry, I have some bad news for you. 00:11:24.399 --> 00:11:27.360 When the boss comes and says, hey, we're downsizing. 00:11:27.679 --> 00:11:31.759 When your spouse comes and says, hey, I'm filing for a divorce. 00:11:32.159 --> 00:11:35.759 When your girlfriend comes and says, hey, it's not you, it's me. 00:11:37.600 --> 00:11:41.360 Our first response out of desperation is prayer. 00:11:42.480 --> 00:11:43.840 We don't need another podcast. 00:11:43.919 --> 00:11:46.000 We don't need another social media influencer. 00:11:46.159 --> 00:11:48.240 We don't need a self-help book. 00:11:48.960 --> 00:11:51.200 We know we need Jesus. 00:11:52.080 --> 00:11:53.919 So we don't know how long Lazarus is sick. 00:11:54.240 --> 00:11:55.440 John doesn't tell us. 00:11:55.679 --> 00:12:00.559 But at some point they realize that the only hope that Lazarus has is a miracle. 00:12:00.720 --> 00:12:04.399 And the only person they know that can perform a miracle is Jesus. 00:12:04.559 --> 00:12:10.240 And so they send word to Jesus and they don't say, Lord, Lazarus is sick. 00:12:10.720 --> 00:12:13.679 They say, Lord, the one you love is sick. 00:12:14.559 --> 00:12:22.799 See, if they couldn't control the illness, they wanted to control Jesus' emotions to inspire him or manipulate him to come and heal Lazarus. 00:12:23.679 --> 00:12:27.840 And I think for many of us, we equate God's love with God's blessing. 00:12:28.080 --> 00:12:29.840 Just like Mary and Martha. 00:12:30.639 --> 00:12:36.080 If we tell Jesus, lead Jesus the one you love is sick, he's going to drop everything and 00:12:55.759 --> 00:13:02.080 Like there's this calculus that we do in our mind, and we say, Man, if God really loves me, he would be blessing me more. 00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:06.159 If God really loves me, he would be answering the prayers that I'm praying quicker than he's answering. 00:13:06.320 --> 00:13:09.279 He would give me what I want when I want it. 00:13:10.480 --> 00:13:15.360 Because we equate God's love with his blessing in Mary and Martha. 00:13:16.240 --> 00:13:21.039 They wanted Jesus to know, hey, the one you love is sick. 00:13:21.279 --> 00:13:25.600 Verse 4, when he heard this, Jesus said, This sickness will not end in death. 00:13:25.840 --> 00:13:29.039 No, it's for God's glory so that the Son may be glorified. 00:13:29.200 --> 00:13:42.000 We don't have time to jump into it, but if you want to do just an amazing journey this week, go and read John 11 and look at how many times the word glory, glory or glorified works its way into John 11. 00:13:42.320 --> 00:13:44.799 There's a bigger narrative going on here. 00:13:45.039 --> 00:13:48.240 Now, Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. 00:13:48.480 --> 00:13:50.879 So John acknowledges there is a relationship there. 00:13:51.039 --> 00:13:53.120 This wasn't just a one-sided relationship. 00:13:53.360 --> 00:13:57.440 Mary and Martha just didn't perceive that Lazarus was prayed for God to heal a loved one, yet they passed away anyway. 00:14:41.039 --> 00:14:44.799 You prayed for God to heal your marriage, yet it still ended. 00:14:45.279 --> 00:14:50.879 You started to give back to God and honor God with your finances, yet you still struggle financially. 00:14:52.080 --> 00:14:55.679 You've prayed to find a spouse, yet you remain single. 00:14:56.159 --> 00:15:01.200 You prayed to God that he would save your pregnancy, yet you still had a miscarriage. 00:15:03.039 --> 00:15:09.840 So often we have these yet moments with God, and we think that the yet moment with God is an indication of his love. 00:15:10.320 --> 00:15:15.039 But God is more concerned with his glory than he is our calendar. 00:15:15.279 --> 00:15:26.399 And so there's this bigger narrative going on in our life and in Mary and Martha's life that has less to do with their circumstances and less to do with your circumstances and more to do with God's glory. 00:15:28.559 --> he sleeps, he will get better. 00:16:10.559 --> 00:16:13.919 Jesus has been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. 00:16:14.080 --> 00:16:16.159 So he told them 00:22:49.440 --> 00:22:58.240 Another instance in another gospel, Martha is running around the house trying to get everything set up for the party they're getting ready to host, and Mary is sitting at the feet of Jesus. 00:22:58.400 --> 00:23:01.279 So she has proximity at Jesus' feet. 00:23:02.240 --> 00:23:04.880 She has consistently sat at the feet of Jesus. 00:23:04.960 --> 00:23:07.279 She has is a person that you get to have a relationship with and you get to have new life every single day. 00:25:47.519 --> 00:25:50.319 Jesus was the fulfillment of my mercies are new every morning. she was closing with a story about her father passing away in January of 2025. 00:28:32.240 --> 00:28:38.640 And for much of her adult life, my wife and her father had a broken relationship because of
