Every time like as a, as a"},{"startTime":238.73,"endTime":243.17,"body":"regular asthmatic, severe asthma, but not,"},{"startTime":243.35,"endTime":246.69,"body":"not as bad as yours and every time you"},{"startTime":243.35,"endTime":246.69,"body":"have to go places and they're like, okay,"},{"startTime":246.691,"endTime":249.65,"body":"have you been experiencing"},{"startTime":246.691,"endTime":249.65,"body":"shortness of breath? Um,"},{"startTime":277.73,"endTime":281.95,"body":"but I didn't find out or recognize"},{"startTime":277.73,"endTime":281.95,"body":"that I was autistic until years"},{"startTime":282.4,"endTime":287.23,"body":"after seeking treatment for my mental"},{"startTime":282.4,"endTime":287.23,"body":"health following what I thought was a"},{"startTime":287.231,"endTime":287.97,"body":"psychotic break,"},{"startTime":287.97,"endTime":291.339,"body":"but actually was something"},{"startTime":287.97,"endTime":291.339,"body":"that researchers are now"},{"startTime":292.86,"endTime":296.86,"body":"Um, and so the reason why I thought it"},{"startTime":292.86,"endTime":296.86,"body":"was a psychotic break was because I was"},{"startTime":296.861,"endTime":301.26,"body":"having multiple daily panic"},{"startTime":296.861,"endTime":301.26,"body":"attacks every day. I was,"},{"startTime":302.58,"endTime":306.26,"body":"um, unable to be in rooms"},{"startTime":302.58,"endTime":306.26,"body":"that had like bright lights."},{"startTime":306.42,"endTime":310.77,"body":"I needed to be in a dark room,"},{"startTime":306.42,"endTime":310.77,"body":"the worst parts of my burnout."},{"startTime":311.01,"endTime":312.05,"body":"I couldn't even talk."},{"startTime":312.23,"endTime":316.77,"body":"And we're talking like not being able"},{"startTime":312.23,"endTime":316.77,"body":"to talk coherently for weeks. Um,"},{"startTime":317.83,"endTime":320.77,"body":"it was really scary and my family,"},{"startTime":320.771,"endTime":324.73,"body":"they thought I was dying like cuz they"},{"startTime":320.771,"endTime":324.73,"body":"had never seen anything like this before."},{"startTime":325.33,"endTime":325.81,"body":"Um, well, and when."},{"startTime":325.81,"endTime":328.08,"body":"You don't have a name to it and"},{"startTime":325.81,"endTime":328.08,"body":"you don't know what's going on,"},{"startTime":328.081,"endTime":331.08,"body":"like I can imagine that the,"},{"startTime":328.081,"endTime":331.08,"body":"the, the worry is what's,"},{"startTime":331.24,"endTime":332.44,"body":"I mean what's even happening."},{"startTime":332.87,"endTime":337.24,"body":"Yeah. What just happened to my"},{"startTime":332.87,"endTime":337.24,"body":"brain and why am I not a, yeah,"},{"startTime":337.26,"endTime":341.52,"body":"it was very, and especially for"},{"startTime":337.26,"endTime":341.52,"body":"somebody like me, who at the time,"},{"startTime":341.839,"endTime":346.51,"body":"in the time of my first burnout,"},{"startTime":341.839,"endTime":346.51,"body":"I was 22, um, newly married,"},{"startTime":347.5,"endTime":351.39,"body":"like months into my marriage,"},{"startTime":347.5,"endTime":351.39,"body":"my poor husband of \u003claugh\u003e."},{"startTime":352.41,"endTime":352.911,"body":"So yeah."},{"startTime":352.911,"endTime":357.72,"body":"Months into our marriage and I"},{"startTime":352.911,"endTime":357.72,"body":"am a full-time school teacher."},{"startTime":357.779,"endTime":362.16,"body":"I'm teaching special ed at a high school"},{"startTime":357.779,"endTime":362.16,"body":"in south central Los Angeles that has a"},{"startTime":362.161,"endTime":366.36,"body":"25% graduation rate. And I"},{"startTime":362.161,"endTime":366.36,"body":"just checked it in 12 years."},{"startTime":366.38,"endTime":368.32,"body":"It has not improved. Um,"},{"startTime":368.54,"endTime":372.4,"body":"so you can imagine the kind of"},{"startTime":368.54,"endTime":372.4,"body":"school setting that I was in. Um,"},{"startTime":373.18,"endTime":377.87,"body":"and I was also working on my master's"},{"startTime":373.18,"endTime":377.87,"body":"degree in special education. So yeah."},{"startTime":377.871,"endTime":380.27,"body":"Okay. I'm autistic. I"},{"startTime":377.871,"endTime":380.27,"body":"don't know I'm autistic,"},{"startTime":380.271,"endTime":384.589,"body":"but I'm a special education teacher"},{"startTime":380.271,"endTime":384.589,"body":"and I'm also RA my mom is a special"},{"startTime":384.59,"endTime":388.51,"body":"education teacher. Like I've been"},{"startTime":384.59,"endTime":388.51,"body":"raised around disability my whole life."},{"startTime":389.71,"endTime":392.95,"body":"Um, and so you would think"},{"startTime":389.71,"endTime":392.95,"body":"that my family and my myself,"},{"startTime":392.951,"endTime":394.15,"body":"especially being trained,"},{"startTime":394.339,"endTime":399.02,"body":"I would have a better understanding"},{"startTime":394.339,"endTime":399.02,"body":"and recognition of myself. I,"},{"startTime":399.18,"endTime":403.22,"body":"I did not. Um, my little brother was"},{"startTime":399.18,"endTime":403.22,"body":"diagnosed with autism when he was seven,"},{"startTime":403.76,"endTime":405.14,"body":"so it's not like autism,"},{"startTime":405.24,"endTime":408.22,"body":"the way it shows up in my family is one"},{"startTime":405.24,"endTime":408.22,"body":"of those where they like pick it out"},{"startTime":408.221,"endTime":410.1,"body":"when you're a toddler"},{"startTime":408.221,"endTime":410.1,"body":"mm-hmm \u003caffirmative\u003e um."},{"startTime":411.089,"endTime":412.73,"body":"Well, and I, I didn't feel like too,"},{"startTime":412.731,"endTime":415.89,"body":"like boys tend to get diagnosed"},{"startTime":412.731,"endTime":415.89,"body":"more easily than girls do."},{"startTime":416.43,"endTime":420.17,"body":"Yes. Yeah. And a big part"},{"startTime":416.43,"endTime":420.17,"body":"of that is because, um,"},{"startTime":420.32,"endTime":425.01,"body":"just because of the research that's"},{"startTime":420.32,"endTime":425.01,"body":"been done has been for the most part"},{"startTime":425.011,"endTime":429.93,"body":"since the time that, uh, autism has"},{"startTime":425.011,"endTime":429.93,"body":"really been discovered or claimed,"},{"startTime":429.931,"endTime":434.36,"body":"and it's only been in the 19th"},{"startTime":429.931,"endTime":434.36,"body":"century or the eight 20th century."},{"startTime":434.53,"endTime":436.08,"body":"Sorry that that happened."},{"startTime":436.56,"endTime":439.2,"body":"1900. Yeah. Yeah. I get"},{"startTime":436.56,"endTime":439.2,"body":"where you're going with that."},{"startTime":440.0,"endTime":443.48,"body":"There's like late 19th century,"},{"startTime":440.0,"endTime":443.48,"body":"if that was the case. Um,"},{"startTime":444.06,"endTime":448.36,"body":"but a lot of the research has mostly"},{"startTime":444.06,"endTime":448.36,"body":"been done on, on boys. And so,"},{"startTime":449.56,"endTime":454.49,"body":"um, yeah, it really, it's been a lot"},{"startTime":449.56,"endTime":454.49,"body":"harder for autistic women to get,"},{"startTime":455.01,"endTime":455.93,"body":"um, identified."},{"startTime":456.47,"endTime":459.45,"body":"And I especially think if you grew"},{"startTime":456.47,"endTime":459.45,"body":"up around the same time that we did,"},{"startTime":459.451,"endTime":460.33,"body":"which is, you know,"},{"startTime":461.61,"endTime":465.93,"body":"the we're born in the late eighties"},{"startTime":461.61,"endTime":465.93,"body":"and we come the age in the nineties,"},{"startTime":466.09,"endTime":468.33,"body":"the nineties was our childhood. Right. Um,"},{"startTime":468.331,"endTime":472.28,"body":"when we look at disability legislation,"},{"startTime":473.02,"endTime":476.32,"body":"the one that really like the"},{"startTime":473.02,"endTime":476.32,"body":"ADA, the adults, or sorry,"},{"startTime":476.321,"endTime":477.88,"body":"the Americans with dis disabilities act,"},{"startTime":477.9,"endTime":481.08,"body":"the one that really changed the game"},{"startTime":477.9,"endTime":481.08,"body":"when it comes to disability rates in"},{"startTime":481.081,"endTime":484.44,"body":"America is only, it was"},{"startTime":481.081,"endTime":484.44,"body":"only signed in 1990."},{"startTime":485.06,"endTime":487.59,"body":"So we live wow. Still living. Wow."},{"startTime":485.06,"endTime":487.59,"body":"I guess I didn't still living."},{"startTime":487.83,"endTime":488.83,"body":"Thinking about that."},{"startTime":489.22,"endTime":491.39,"body":"Yeah. And so, um, so even in my"},{"startTime":498.98,"endTime":503.03,"body":"training, as a special ed teacher,"},{"startTime":503.15,"endTime":507.78,"body":"I was never trained specifically to,"},{"startTime":503.15,"endTime":507.78,"body":"to look out for the ways that autism,"},{"startTime":508.12,"endTime":511.02,"body":"the ways that I was taught to know"},{"startTime":508.12,"endTime":511.02,"body":"about autism was like, oh, okay,"},{"startTime":511.47,"endTime":515.3,"body":"can't make eye contact really"},{"startTime":511.47,"endTime":515.3,"body":"into their special interests."},{"startTime":515.301,"endTime":519.14,"body":"Like you're imagining like that little"},{"startTime":515.301,"endTime":519.14,"body":"boy who's obsessed with star wars. Like,"},{"startTime":519.78,"endTime":524.37,"body":"and that's when I try to explain"},{"startTime":519.78,"endTime":524.37,"body":"to people when I'm like, okay,"},{"startTime":524.75,"endTime":527.49,"body":"so you know how I get real"},{"startTime":524.75,"endTime":527.49,"body":"passionate about things sometimes,"},{"startTime":527.89,"endTime":530.65,"body":"cuz I've always gotten real passionate"},{"startTime":527.89,"endTime":530.65,"body":"about things, right? Um,"},{"startTime":684.14,"endTime":688.64,"body":"but it wasn't until I started looking"},{"startTime":684.14,"endTime":688.64,"body":"into like what goes on with adults when,"},{"startTime":688.71,"endTime":692.12,"body":"with autism that or autistic"},{"startTime":688.71,"endTime":692.12,"body":"adults that I recognized like, oh,"},{"startTime":692.21,"endTime":695.2,"body":"there is a lot of similarities"},{"startTime":692.21,"endTime":695.2,"body":"with what I went through."},{"startTime":695.26,"endTime":698.92,"body":"So the phenomenon that happens is"},{"startTime":695.26,"endTime":698.92,"body":"this concept called autistic burnout."},{"startTime":699.1,"endTime":701.76,"body":"And basically it's very similar to, um,"},{"startTime":702.07,"endTime":706.11,"body":"burnouts that we talk about in"},{"startTime":702.07,"endTime":706.11,"body":"most psychological circles. And um,"},{"startTime":804.39,"endTime":808.67,"body":"that came as a result of my family"},{"startTime":804.39,"endTime":808.67,"body":"decided that they all wanted to move to"},{"startTime":808.671,"endTime":811.23,"body":"Arizona. And so we all"},{"startTime":808.671,"endTime":811.23,"body":"moved to Arizona too,"},{"startTime":811.809,"endTime":816.51,"body":"but it also happened in tandem with I'm"},{"startTime":811.809,"endTime":816.51,"body":"working at Disneyland as a presenter at"},{"startTime":816.511,"endTime":821.429,"body":"interventions and they abruptly"},{"startTime":816.511,"endTime":821.429,"body":"closed my attraction. One of the,"},{"startTime":822.67,"endTime":826.3,"body":"a big thing for a lot of autistic people"},{"startTime":822.67,"endTime":826.3,"body":"is we really struggle with transitions."},{"startTime":827.179,"endTime":828.14,"body":"Mm-hmm \u003caffirmative\u003e um, growing up,"},{"startTime":828.141,"endTime":832.3,"body":"my parents used to always joke that I"},{"startTime":828.141,"endTime":832.3,"body":"hated change because any change like I,"},{"startTime":832.5,"endTime":834.14,"body":"I would. So in the case of like,"},{"startTime":834.141,"endTime":837.3,"body":"when we moved to our first house"},{"startTime":834.141,"endTime":837.3,"body":"from our apartment that I lived in,"},{"startTime":837.301,"endTime":838.14,"body":"until I was six,"},{"startTime":838.54,"endTime":842.62,"body":"I threw myself on the tile floor and"},{"startTime":838.54,"endTime":842.62,"body":"just screamed for like an hour. Um,"},{"startTime":843.22,"endTime":846.13,"body":"but that was normal for"},{"startTime":843.22,"endTime":846.13,"body":"six year old Shauna,"},{"startTime":846.3,"endTime":848.29,"body":"we're not gonna say"},{"startTime":846.3,"endTime":848.29,"body":"that that's a meltdown."},{"startTime":848.35,"endTime":853.09,"body":"It was definitely a meltdown and"},{"startTime":848.35,"endTime":853.09,"body":"\u003claugh\u003e and you know, as an adult,"},{"startTime":854.13,"endTime":858.29,"body":"um, those things that I thought were"},{"startTime":854.13,"endTime":858.29,"body":"panic attacks were actually meltdowns."},{"startTime":858.33,"endTime":861.44,"body":"I was getting sensory"},{"startTime":858.33,"endTime":861.44,"body":"overload. And so, um,"},{"startTime":862.0,"endTime":866.48,"body":"well I St still do identify"},{"startTime":862.0,"endTime":866.48,"body":"with the mental illnesses"},{"startTime":866.72,"endTime":870.56,"body":"cuz I definitely have experienced, you"},{"startTime":866.72,"endTime":870.56,"body":"know, extreme sadness, suicidality,"},{"startTime":870.58,"endTime":872.6,"body":"things like that. Um,"},{"startTime":873.16,"endTime":877.68,"body":"I now recognize it more as like I wasn't"},{"startTime":873.16,"endTime":877.68,"body":"born with anxiety and depression unlike"},{"startTime":877.89,"endTime":882.07,"body":"being autistic, but it is uh, how my,"},{"startTime":883.69,"endTime":887.07,"body":"how I was able to, or I"},{"startTime":883.69,"endTime":887.07,"body":"guess it's, it's the, um,"},{"startTime":887.26,"endTime":890.27,"body":"consolation prize I get and trying"},{"startTime":887.26,"endTime":890.27,"body":"to pretend to be normal. Right? Um,"},{"startTime":944.68,"endTime":947.97,"body":"and most autistic people pick"},{"startTime":944.68,"endTime":947.97,"body":"up this skill on their own."},{"startTime":948.12,"endTime":951.01,"body":"They learn it just because"},{"startTime":948.12,"endTime":951.01,"body":"it's a survival mechanism."},{"startTime":951.12,"endTime":953.57,"body":"This is what I do to keep myself safe. So, you know, our"},{"startTime":1508.28,"endTime":1513.16,"body":"disabled people being treated as equal"},{"startTime":1508.28,"endTime":1513.16,"body":"human beings and not just charity"},{"startTime":1513.25,"endTime":1516.8,"body":"cases that, you know, we throw money"},{"startTime":1513.25,"endTime":1516.8,"body":"at, or we hope churches take care of,"},{"startTime":1518.75,"endTime":1523.55,"body":"um, has been relatively new."},{"startTime":1518.75,"endTime":1523.55,"body":"Right. I remember when"},{"startTime":1549.68,"endTime":1553.38,"body":"the, when the city came and did that."},{"startTime":1554.69,"endTime":1558.21,"body":"Um, and how many kids grow"},{"startTime":1554.69,"endTime":1558.21,"body":"up today? Never knowing that,"},{"startTime":1558.211,"endTime":1562.69,"body":"like we had to carve out ramps into"},{"startTime":1558.211,"endTime":1562.69,"body":"these, like, they didn't always exist."},{"startTime":1562.69,"endTime":1567.33,"body":"Right. Um,"},{"startTime":2481.19,"endTime":2485.969,"body":"there are organizations that have were"},{"startTime":2481.19,"endTime":2485.969,"body":"established in the late 1990s that focus"},{"startTime":2486.07,"endTime":2490.17,"body":"on making accessibility"},{"startTime":2486.07,"endTime":2490.17,"body":"a, uh, a major part of,"},{"startTime":2491.41,"endTime":2494.12,"body":"of the internet where"},{"startTime":2491.41,"endTime":2494.12,"body":"right now it really isn't."},{"startTime":2494.121,"endTime":2498.76,"body":"One of those organizations is called"},{"startTime":2494.121,"endTime":2498.76,"body":"web accessibility and mind web aim,"},{"startTime":2499.14,"endTime":2499.36,"body":"web."},{"startTime":2499.36,"endTime":2503.84,"body":"Aim, and yeah.
