Speaker 1:

What do you know about spiritual warfare? Today we're going to explore this important topic where invisible battles happen between angels and demons, and how you can arm yourself against Satan's attacks. In 2 Corinthians 10, verses 1-6, we will learn about the tools that God has given us to break down strongholds, to control our thoughts and stand strong against the enemy. Are you ready to take action? Let's get into it. Well, hey there, my friends, welcome to Stand Strong in the Word. Podcast. Jason Jimenez, with you as always. Blessed to be with you guys as we continue our study here in 2 Corinthians.

Speaker 1:

Now we are transitioning in chapter 10, where the title is Spiritual Warfare the Battle to Take Every Thought Captive, and this might go into three parts, because I'm still undecided as I've studied this passage. I'm actually writing a Q&A book on spiritual warfare as we speak, and so it was interesting as I was teaching and also studying for this new book and having a lot of meetings about it, and then coming to Second Corinthians in my Bible study and then for this podcast, I've really gone even deeper and pulled other notes, so I'm just not sure how much I'm going to give you guys. So if you're listening to this podcast and you want to really go deep into spiritual warfare, then shoot us an email info at stanstromministriesorg. I love hearing from you guys and if you have any prayer requests, let us know that. And, as always, wherever you get your podcasts, make sure that you guys leave reviews. Tons of people listen and yet very few take the time. It only takes a few minutes and just that. Very few take the time and only takes a few minutes, and just know that. We so appreciate that because it helps build this platform and it continues to be out there for other people who can hear about this ministry.

Speaker 1:

Now you and I know, as we dive into 2 Corinthians 10 about spiritual warfare today, that there's such an ignorance Now I'm speaking about the Western hemisphere there's an, you know, just an ignorance when it comes to spiritual warfare. So many Christians are easily distracted. They're consumed with their day-to-day lives and many Christians, simply put, as I've talked to them through the years, they believe again that there is a Satan, that there are demons, that there are angels who are ministering spirits and guardians who take care of us. But this whole Hollywoodized version of Satan, if you will, and demons is, you know, obviously grotesque and very popularized to a level to where the imagery or even the theology is not true, whether it's from the exorcist, the poltergeist, you know, all those classic horror movies which I do not recommend anyone should watch. But we are finding that there's, as my friend Michael Heiser put it, that there's like a lackluster response to demonic attacks and activities going on, and he writes in one of his books that many Christians claim to believe in the supernatural but think and live like skeptics, and I think he's right on that. Now, if you know of Dr Heiser's life, he was a great theologian, controversial in some areas. He passed away about at this point as I'm recording this, about a year and a half ago. He's sorely missed. Continue to pray for the Heiser family, but we're so thankful for his faithfulness to the word of God and, as I said, I don't agree with every point of view that he had, but I appreciate his due diligence and the way that he went after the truth in scripture.

Speaker 1:

And so when we deal with supernatural issues, oftentimes people get very curious and they have a lot of predispositions that come with it. Then you get some people that I've faced in just ministry for all these years who have had demonic experience. Now let me just be clear. I believe in these, not every case. But when somebody comes to me genuinely in fear or in curiosity or they feel that they've been demonized which we've had in our ministry I don't take those things lightly. I don't think any Christian should we come to the authority of Christ that he's delegated and given to us. We see this in the Great Commission. We'll talk about that probably in the next few podcasts, depending how long this series on spiritual warfare goes in 2 Corinthians 10.

Speaker 1:

But then you also have to counter the charismatic movement. Not that I disregard everything that happens there, but there's a lot of confusion. When you see people out there on television and they're doing these deliverance ministries, you're thinking how credible are these ministries? Is in fact deliverance or exorcism or expelling demons or casting out demons being done the way in which we see in scripture? And we have to understand that when we again the title that we're looking at is the battle to take every thought captive that there is a spiritual battle that goes on, that is beyond the physical, and so oftentimes we get so fixated in this world that we can lose sight of things. And so when you do see some of this charismatic activity, it can be very compelling or very alarming or disturbing, depending on how they're actually approaching scripture.

Speaker 1:

Now we know one thing that I'll tell you guys as well before we get into the text that there are a lot of accounts that we have of Jesus dealing with demons and also the early church, and, of course, through that we can extrapolate and look at a lot of cases that we have experientially throughout church history that we have to weigh in the context of Scripture. The Scripture, the Word of God, the 66 books of the Bible that we call the infallible, inspired Word of God, has given us what we need through the power of the Holy Spirit, through the revelatory message that God has given us through 40 authors. Now, having said that, we also understand that the Bible does not give us every answer to everything that we face as Christians. So we have to be discerning, we have to take what we know to be the truth of God and weigh it, particularly when it comes to spiritual warfare. So there are some things that we're going to get into the realm. That's speculation, or we can try to do our best as we pray in the spirit, with God's word, which is our sword right. It's one of the armor of God that we have as one of the weapons, the only weapon and the only weapon we need to fight against the enemy. So these are important things, my friends, as we're looking at spiritual warfare. So I don't know what your experiences have been.

Speaker 1:

If you have seen demons, if you've seen angels, if you know of somebody who's demonized and we'll get into what that demonization is, because one thing that I am addressing in my Q&A book and I want to point out on this podcast as we're looking through 2 Corinthians, chapter 10, I don't buy into this demon possession versus demon oppression. Now, there is such a thing as possession and oppression, but it's not the polarity that we see within Scripture. We don't just see it's either this or it's that. It's a lot more complex and we're going to look into these type of things and I would love if you are listening and you have questions or you need deliverance. You are struggling in your life and you feel like my thoughts or something that's going on in my life. Or there's a generational sin for my family, ancestral sin, or I feel cursed. Satan is attacking me for my family, ancestral sin, or I feel cursed. Satan is attacking me.

Speaker 1:

Recently, we were contacted as a ministry, from people I don't even know that were needing deliverance and they had faith to believe that God has the power. And they were looking to people that they have trusted in the ministry. I've never met them personally, but they had been consuming our content and believed that God was leading them in our direction and we were able to get them help. So if you are one of those individuals and you're listening to this podcast before I dive in, let us know how we can help. Again, info at stanstrawministriesorg. You can always check out the website and contacts through the website at stanstrawministriesorg.

Speaker 1:

So let's dive in, my friends, as we look at how we are to face these battles with Satan in the spiritual realm and also how he tries to attack us in the physical. So Paul says here in verse 1 of 2 Corinthians 10, I, paul myself, entreat you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ. I, who am humble when face to face with you, but bold towards you when I'm away, I beg of you that when I am present, I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect of us of walking according to the flesh, for though we walk in the flesh. We are not waging war according to the flesh, verse six, being ready to punish every disobedience when your obedience is complete. What I like to do, before we start looking at this verse by verse, is to give you guys a breakdown of spiritual warfare, and I actually want to give you two quotes from very scholarly individuals one by the name of Tom White in his book on spiritual warfare, and also the legendary preacher and writer AW Tozer. He wrote a book called I Talk Back to the Devil.

Speaker 1:

Now. Tom White says this spiritual warfare is a multi-level conflict between good and evil, initiated on the supernatural plane with the prehistoric rebellion of Lucifer and transferred onto the natural plane with the fall of man. Satan, man's adversary, continues to deceive and divert people from finding salvation in Jesus Christ and to harass and hinder Christians through enticement to sin and exploitation of weaknesses. Because Satan is the author and initiator of original sin and because he is the god of this world. Spiritual warfare involves a constant multidimensional battle against the world, a system of ungodly values, the flesh sin inherent to our humanity and the devil, supernatural personification of evil. Warfare implies the likelihood of losses, eternal separation from God for the non-believer and diminished effectiveness and suffering for the believer. Listen now to how AW Tozer talks about spiritual warfare in his book. I Talk Back to the Devil.

Speaker 1:

Why doesn't the old devil, satan, give up and bow out of the picture when a person becomes a believing Christian, although he is a dark and sinister foe dedicated to the damnation of humans? I think he knows that it is no use trying to damn a forgiven and justified child of God who is in the Lord's hands. So it becomes the devil's business to keep the Christian spirit imprisoned. He knows that the believing and justified Christian has been raised up out of the grave of his sins and trespasses. From that point on, satan works that much harder to keep us bound and gagged, actually imprisoned in our own grave clothes. He knows that if we continue in this kind of bondage we will never be able to claim our rightful spiritual heritage. He knows also that while we continue bound in this kind of enslavement, we are not much better off than we are spiritually dead. So these are two individuals, tom White and AW Tozer, speaking about spiritual warfare and the one thing that we have to understand in this nature of our struggles.

Speaker 1:

We're going to be looking into the text. Yes, in one sense Paul's going to be identifying the physicality that our life is in, but also the spiritual one, and it's important that when we are dealing with spiritual warfare yes, hence the term spiritual warfare is the unseen battle, but this unseen battle affects us in the physical. So we have to be able to distinguish between spiritual battles versus worldly challenges, maybe perhaps, that are brought on by your own flesh, and so learning to distinguish between demonic activity, when Satan is really attacking, and those type of symptoms that come as a result, versus sometimes, you and I falling in our own flesh, our own fallenness. You know, whether it's doubt or fear, or lust or pride, you know it's not always Satan that engineers those things and it's like, oh, you know, satan was behind everything. No, there's, there's the fallen world. There is, which also, like Tom White pointed out, the worldly system with its various different ideologies or worldviews or positions that, again, are counterintuitive to God's truth. There's our own flesh that we need to contend with, that seeks to disobey God and do things that are contrary to the word of God, and then there's Satan, a fallen angel, who was the one, who was the original created being, who fell and rebelled against God and sinned and, as a result, in his fallen state, he went and tempted Adam and Eve, who are not made in the image of angelic likeness, but in the image of God, and so it was a different type of fall, because God gave the man and the woman dominion over the earth primarily the man and they fall. There's corruption, and so the second law of thermodynamics was affected there. And so these are things that we contend with, these are things that we fight and wrestle with, these are things we struggle with. That's the nature of the struggle when it comes to spiritual warfare. All things are in play here. It's multidimensional and we cannot underestimate that.

Speaker 1:

So, having said all that, when Paul now is transitioning here, dealing with all of the drama idolatry, remember he says table of demons. You know that offering, you know the meats to idols. He's talked about gossip. He talked about man's rights, women's rights, responsibilities, giftedness talks about the division, finding forgiveness and also overcoming sexual morality and making sure that people are being bonded in a marriage that is honorable to the Lord. And now he's going to be focusing on these elements that he's been touching on off and on, but is really going to be magnifying it a lot more in the context before us.

Speaker 1:

Now, before I start explaining that, remember, if you go back to 2 Corinthians 2, and Paul was talking about forgiving the sinner verses 5 through 11, if you remember, he says in verse 10, anyone whom you forgive, I also forgive, indeed, what I have forgiven. If I have forgiven anything has been for your sake, in the presence of Christ. So that verse 11, we would not be outwitted by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his devices. So we clearly have Paul mentioning that they are not foolish. They're understanding the spiritual battles that they faced in the ministry. So here in verse one, when Paul is entreating them, he comes with meekness and gentleness of Christ.

Speaker 1:

There's a humility that Paul has here, and so, when he's transitioning to this new area, one of the things that he's highlighting in context of spiritual warfare is false teachers. My friends, let me be very clear, which is one reason, one of many reasons, but one reason why I like to open the Bible verse by verse with you in a chronological order is because of false teachers. If you and I don't know the truth, if you and I are grounded, if we're not standing strong in God's word, we can be led astray. And Paul's approach is a gentle appeal when he says myself and treat you. That's parakaleo, where we get the word parakalitos, you know, which is a reference to Christ or, excuse me, to the Holy Spirit, christ or, excuse me, to the Holy Spirit, one who comes alongside. It's one of comfort and guidance. It's a support that we don't get other than through the love of Christ, and so we can come alongside one another, encourage one another.

Speaker 1:

There's a gentleness there, and so Paul wants the Corinthians to pay attention to what he's saying, because he's raising issues regarding how people are saying that he is mistreating them, how he's behaving wrongly in the flesh and that he's not authentic, like there's really no authenticity that when it comes to Paul, and that that was some of the false teachers claims and that, right there again, as he says in Ephesians 6, we don't wrestle against flesh and blood. At the end of the day, all this is being brought on by Satan. It's a direct attack, and I love this, because one thing that Paul does in addressing false teachers which is going to lead into the discussion about spiritual warfare and going up against these systems that Satan has put in place to counter the truth of God he comes with meekness and he comes with gentleness that is so important, my friends, because this word humble that Paul's using here, or being timid, is tapeneos. It signifies a low social class or a subservient attitude in Hellenistic Greek culture in the context of spiritual warfare. When you and I come before the Lord, when you and I come in conversation with one another, and when you and I even come and engage somebody who we oppose or they oppose our position, we are to come with meekness and gentleness. Now, that does not mean that we get walked all over. That doesn't mean that we'd be taken advantage of. What it means is that, instead of presenting yourself boastfully, instead of coming in a high class temperament, I'm better than you.

Speaker 1:

Look at me, because, remember those in high class society they would perceive Paul's humility as a sign of weakness, just like the people he associated with, or just the fact that he worked as a sign of weakness, just like the people he associated with or just the fact that he worked as a tent maker. So a lot of people look down on Paul. Yet he was this individual of high class at one point, before he came to Christ. He was well-educated and yet they had a disregard for him because of his posture. Yet Paul was not appealing to the high class. Rather, he was appealing or I should say that he was inspiring those around him because he wanted to be an example of Jesus Christ.

Speaker 1:

This reminds me of the great Clement of Rome, and this is what he had to say in regards to this particular subject matter. He said, quote for Christ is with those who are humble, not with those who exalt themselves over his flock. The majestic scepter of God, Our Lord, jesus Christ, did not come with a pomp of arrogance or pride, but in humility. Like a sheep, he was led to the slaughter end quote. So Jesus is our example. Right, we know this.

Speaker 1:

But let me just pause and not take that for granted. When we're dealing with spiritual warfare, how often do we look to be like Christ? So when we're getting angry, do we say Lord, help me. I want to be like you, lord Jesus. I want to come with meekness and gentleness as somebody attacks me, how am I to respond? I mean even something as small as right now, my wife and I are dealing with another issue with a vehicle and the people at the shop. They're not taking responsibility for it at all. And you want to lose it at these moments because through the years we've had to keep going back, and and you want to lose it at these moments because through the years we've had to keep going back and there's always a new manager and they never call you, they never take responsibility, they're just rude. And again, at that moment you could attack that person. But just the other day, by God's grace, again, this was all the Lord. But at first I was really upset and then, as I got there, I just, with a smile, patience, asked what their names were, encouraged them, thanked them for their service, and just again humanize the situation and know that again I'm not going to allow the enemy to take advantage of this kind of stuff and to just feed off of that. And then it just starts affecting every aspect of my life. That's how Satan can start taking control, and I love this because, as Paul's going to be addressing what's really going on here, he needs to make sure his demeanor, his focus, his approach is that of the Lord. Now, the other thing, though, that's important. We will be touching on this throughout, and this is something, actually, that we have talked about.

Speaker 1:

Even going back to the first letter of Corinthians, there were a lot of people who took issue with Paul, thinking this guy says one thing in his letters and then he does something else and so he's defending himself. But again, he's not being abrasive about it this phrase here bold towards you when I am away. Again, what he's explicitly pointing out is that his critics were accusing him. They're saying oh, you say one thing in your letters, but then you're a completely different way when you are face-to-face with people. It's almost like what you see us oftentimes doing today. It's easier for you to confront something or like, maybe indirectly, or be passive-aggressive right, you hear that a lot, maybe indirectly. Or be passive aggressive right, when you hear that a lot. But when you're with that individual or the group of people that you have an issue with, you pretend like everything's fine. But it's easier to text somebody something that you have a problem with them. But when you see them in person, you're you're timid, and that's that's kind of what they're saying about Paul.

Speaker 1:

And what Paul's critics fail to grasp was that, as an apostle, he was exercising authority when necessary, yet showing mercy as a warning to address the diverse needs of others Now false teachers, people who are being paid to be an orator. That was not the way that they played the game. They were defined by their approach and if it was in a bombastic way, that's what they did 100% of the time. So one minute when they see that Paul's being very, you know, bold and declaring something, and then the next he's very timid. Of course, physically, paul was a man who was suffering from a lot of issues and you know a lot of people, you know, pointed these things out with the Galatians, with his poor eyesight, with his affirmatives that we see in 2 Corinthians, that he has, that we'll be touching on in chapter 12. Then we see the Philippians giving need to him. We see some of the poverty that he faced. Of course, we said earlier that he had to work in order to provide, to make a living.

Speaker 1:

This man was not using the ministry or I should say this, using his apostleship, as a way to take advantage of people and to make money off of it. He exercised authority when it was necessary. Just like a parent, you're not always in disciplinary mode. That comes when necessary. Just like a parent, you're not always in, you know, disciplinary mode. That comes when necessary, but most of the time, if you have a tranquil home and you're present with your children and you're loving and affirming them. You're not going to always have to be disciplining them. There's times for correction, there's time for conversation, there's time to confront some issues, and sometimes there's a one. It's a, it's a one-way street conversation, right, because it's like it's a fork in the road and, depending on that child and their age, they have to make a decision. That is how Paul was approaching them.

Speaker 1:

Remember, if you go back to 1 Corinthians 4, he says you guys have all these instructors. Remember that culture in Corinth, this is the Athenian culture, the Macedonian culture. You have all these instructors, all these professionals, but not many fathers. He came to them as a father, so he's extending them this kind of mercy. This, my friends, is so important because in spiritual warfare we need to make sure that we come with meekness and gentleness, that we come to correct when necessary and when we come also in mercy when necessary. This is the approach that Paul takes. And so in verse two, he says I beg of you that when I am present, I may not have to show boldness with such confidence as I count on showing against some who suspect us of walking according to the flesh.

Speaker 1:

So I believe, in this context, one yes, paul is addressing people who are actually these false teachers who are causing turmoil, who are making accusation or spreading lies, saying one thing about Paul that's not true. So then Paul has to come and he has to counter that. That's of the enemy, that right, there is spiritual warfare Satan is using. Whoever these false teachers were, whoever was spreading these lies Remember, he's the father of lies, so he is the originator of these things, he's the originator of sin, and so Paul is again, remember he never explicitly states the reason for his plea, but he's explaining it now in this verse.

Speaker 1:

He's saying to his critics, or I should say about his critics who are accusing him they're saying he's selfish, they're saying that he's not genuine in how he cares for the Corinthians. My friends, just think about the accusations that you and I have faced in our lives selfish, they're saying that he's not genuine in how he cares for the Corinthians. My friends, just think about the accusations that you and I have faced in our lives. Just think about that and ask yourself, in some of those instances, let's pray that they have not been a lot. And if you've been a person who's been attacked a lot, you know we're praying for you. We know how difficult and hard that can be, but when you take into account some of those accusations, I want you to think how many of those times was the work of Satan?

Speaker 1:

Now, this phrase walking according to the flesh Paul utilizes one of his favorite terms here. So this phrase is very unique to paul. In the greek it's parapateo, which he employs 31 times, and he uses it primarily to describe the christian life. But here, notice, he says walking according to the flesh. He's using a term walking. So when he's describing the christian life, it's a walk, it's a walk of life. That's why we always use maybe you know the modern term is spiritual journey. It's all derivative from peripateo, this term that Paul utilizes.

Speaker 1:

And so what essentially Paul is saying is his critics, who are saying that again, you're feeble, you're erratic, you're untrustworthy, you're not a dependable leader. He's addressing this issue to urge the Corinthians to resolve this issue with these false teachers. Don't listen to them. They're saying that I'm walking, my colleagues and I are walking according to flesh, that we don't care about you guys. He's saying he's addressing it and that's why, from this point, that we have to understand this, because this is a lead in to the famous passage where he says here in verse four, for the weapons of world warfare are not of the flesh. Before he says that we have to understand what he's saying. Up to this point he is explaining to them these accusations that are coming from these critics, and so Paul's critics. When they're saying this, paul's responding again with gentleness and meekness. He says, corinthians, you have to resolve this before my arrival, because he wants to ensure that this won't continue to build, that there won't have to be the spirit of rebuke or to have to do damage control.

Speaker 1:

Ivb commentary says they appear to be itinerant Jewish Christian preachers. He's talking about false. The commentary here is talking about the false teachers who encroached on Paul's territory and claimed credit for his work. So that's the other thing that Satan will do Again, this jealousy, these outbursts of wrath, this competition, this disparaged Paul for refusing financial support for his churches, which is one reason this commentary saying the IVP commentary, perhaps that why Paul you know to be above par right, to be above reproach he's not pursuing financial support even though he was in need, because he doesn't want anybody to get the wrong impression.

Speaker 1:

You can see this in 1 Corinthians 9, 2 Corinthians 12, verse 13. Not carrying letters of recommendation on his own in 2 Corinthians, 3, 1 through 3. Being unsuccessful in reaching his own people in chapter 3, verse 14. And being an unimpressive speaker, which we're going to be seeing in this chapter in verses 10 through 11. They flaunted their achievements, claiming a superior heritage to Paul's in chapter 11, verse 22. Superior heritage to Paul's in chapter 11, verse 22. And boasting of greater spirituality, meaning visions and revelations in chapter 12, verse 1. Signs and wonders and miracles in chapter 12, verse 12. Knowledge like they're smarter, more well-versed, in chapter 11, verse 6. And speaking abilities chapter 10, verse 10. Now, why do I point this out? Because this is the work of Satan. Notice, they were attacking Paul to the point where they're saying he's unimpressive. If he's anointed by God, he would be more impressive than he is. In fact, look at our achievements, look at our superior heritage, look at our visions and revelations, look at our signs and wonders and miracles, look at our knowledge, look at our speaking abilities and then compare that to Paul. You really think that this is a man of God.

Speaker 1:

And yet, throughout the letter, paul confronted many of these false accusations. Remember, in chapter one, verse 17, he says was I vacillating when I wanted to do this. Do I make my plans according to the flesh, ready to say yes, yes and no, no, at the same time, any contradicting myself? In chapter two, verse 17, he says for we are not like so many, peddlers of God's word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God, we speak in Christ. And then he says in chapter four, verse two but we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. See, this is a spiritual warfare. This is setting the groundwork.

Speaker 1:

And then what Paul is going to do. As he's detailing these physical, personal attacks, he goes beyond them and says they're being engineered by Satan at a deeper level, on a spiritual level. And so he was countering these lies. He was not a peddler of God's word, he was not vacillating, he was not contradicting himself, he was not doing things in underhanded ways, he was not practicingicting himself, he was not under doing things in underhanded ways, he was not practicing cunning or tampering with God's word.

Speaker 1:

He came through the recommendation and the authority that Christ himself had given him. And Paul was pleading with the Corinthians to look to him as an example. In fact, he closes out the letter 2 Corinthians 13, verse 10, he says for this reason I write these things while I'm away from you, that, when I come, I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down. See, that's the difference, my friends, in the spiritual attacks that we find in our lives. Satan is in the business of tearing things down. And so, paul one of the examples and one of the proofs, if you will, that he was anointed by God, he was an apostle, and that he loved the Corinthians, is he was building them up, he was coming in a spirit of gentleness and meekness. He wasn't tearing people down.

Speaker 1:

So, a lot of times in the ministry, just because they have a cross, they claim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, they quote preach from the Bible, et cetera, et cetera, doesn't mean that Satan is not at work there, because there were a lot of people that were classified as critics of Paul, who also were professing followers of Jesus, also were professing followers of Jesus, and yet the enemy was taking a hold of them to attack the credibility of Paul so that the gospel would not spread. That's the work of Satan. That's what Satan wants done. So, having said all that, when we get into the next verses, for, though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. We will have a better understanding of what that actually looks like.

Speaker 1:

So I'm going to pause there, my friends, and just remind all of you that we have a website that's available for you guys to check out our podcasts, the books and articles that I have written for you guys, and also to encourage each and every one of you listening.
