The Move Part 5: Arrival
MADDOX: Hold on Kitten, let me pull your carrier out. Mom, should I bring her into the house? I’m afraid she might run off.
MOM: Just hook your leash up to her and you can take her for a walk in the yard.
XANDER: FREEDOM!!! Mom, I'm not getting back into the car for at least a week!
Chicken commotion.
CLUCKY: Brauk!! Does it mean we’re here?
XANDER: Never fear Clucky! We shall vanquish the shackles that have bound you so long!
MOM: Xander, make sure you put the chickens on their leashes. This is all new for them and we don’t need them wandering off. There could still be danger in the trees. There aren’t any gators or poisonous snakes, but there could be other predators.
KITTEN: Meow, Stretch! I’m so tired of being confined! Oh wow! I’ve never seen so many different colors of green!
XANDER: Hold on buddy let me hook this up!
BELLA: Bauk! Oh Me First! I must get out!
BRIGITA: Get your tail feathers out of my face! CLUCK! I must get out of here! I smell freedom!
XANDER: Ouch! No pecking! Don’t worry ladies, we will get you all out!
CLUCKY: Cock a doodle do! Discipline ladies! Remember your training!
ROSIE: Bark Bark! I’m free! So many smells! (Choke) I must run! (choking noises) let me go! (Choke)
MOM: Rosie Stop pulling!
ROSIE: (Choke, Cough) Must break free! (Choke) Must smell everything! Bark Choke
MOM: Oh alright, I understand you need to run. I am going to drop your leash and let you run a little. Don’t go far!
ROSIE: Freedom! (barking cough) so many smells! Bark
CLUCKY: Brauk! Stay back, beast! I just got my freedom and I’m not going to let you devour me!
ROSIE: Bark! Out of my way drumstick I’ve got stuff to smell! Bark, Bark Bark!
XANDER: (chicken commotion) Whoa Rosie! Slow down you are scaring the chickens!
MADDOX: Don’t worry Xander, she's just getting her energy out. Come on kitten, do you want to explore over here? There are lots of big boulders, a dry creek bed and grass over here.
KITTEN: Meow, Oh yes! I need to move! My legs are so stiff and wobbly! That last section of the drive up the mountain was so windy. I mean windy.
CLUCKY: Well of course it was windy, the whole drive was windy in the back of the truck.
KITTEN: No Windy, not windy, I know it's strange those two words are spelled the same. It’s called a heteronym. Words that are spelled the same but pronounced differently.
CLUCKY: Really? Windy and Windy are spelled the same? But they mean two totally different things.
Windy like the air blowing my feathers askew the whole trip (SFX) and Windy like the hairpin turns the truck took as we drove up the mountain (SFX tires screeching)
BRIGIT: Oh yeah! I was tossed into the side of the cage so many times!
BRIGITA: You were tossed?! I think I have an imprint on my beautiful feathers after a particularly bad bend that pushed me up against the cage and your feathery bottom landed on me!
BRIGIT: It was not my fault! The bottom of our cage is plastic. There was nothing to grip on to.
CLUCKY: Calm down ladies. Don’t worry Brigita, your feathers will unruffle soon. Let’s follow kitten over these rocks and check out the green grass. I’ve never seen grass this color green. It’s a very dark green
BELLA: Those are more than just rocks! They are boulders! I’ve never seen so many big rocks in my life. I may have to flap my wings to make it over some of these! (Flapping)
KITTEN: It will be a good chance for you to spread your wings after the long drive.
BRIGITA: Indeed! I was afraid we’d never get here.
ROSIE: Bark! Coming through! Look out feather dusters. I’ve got a need for speed! Bark, Bark Bark!
(clucks! meows!)
MADDOX: Rosie, are you enjoying your run time?
XANDER: She is so fast! She is just doing loops around the yard.
MADDOX: (giggles) Good thing it is a big yard! It will take her a few minutes before she makes it around again.
DAD: Come on Jack, I’ll help you down. Your old bones are looking a bit stiff. (Pawing sound) Here let me just lift you out. There you go.
JACK: Ruff! At last! Out of the car!
ROSIE: Bark! Finally making it out old man?! I’m on my 2nd lap around the yard! This place is huge! So much to explore! So many new smells. Bark, Bark Bark!
JACK: Calm down you young whipper snapper. Ruff! These old legs just take a bit to get going.
DAD: Come on Captain Jack, over here is a nice patch of grass over here away from the others, for you to check out.
JACK: Oh this grass! It’s so green and velvety! Oh I remember this feeling from my youth spent in Ohio. It’s like a soft green carpet that stretches over the earth. Oh! It’s all coming back to me.
KITTEN: What is Jack doing over there? Is he rolling in the grass?
CLUCKY: (Hop & Flap) Oh My plumage! Kitten you’ve got to feel this stuff! This is not the grass we know!
KITTEN: What do you mean? (hop) Oh my! I see what you mean. It’s like my paws have just melted into a lush green carpet. It’s so soft. Not the coarse thick spongy florida grass!
BRIGIT: I did not know grass could feel this way.
BRIGITA: Bauk! Something is wrong! If you scratch it with your claws there is this dark black substance under it! It is not SAND!!!
CLUCKY: Bauk! What is that?! Is it dangerous?
BRIGITA: I hope not! It seems to be stuck to my claw! It does not fall off like sand.
CLUCKY: Are you hurt? How does it feel?
SONG
KITTEN: Isn’t that dirt?
CLUCKY: I heard it might hurt
KITTEN: No it’s not dirt
BRIGITA: It’s dark, evil and vile!
BELLA: Maybe it’s dirt
BRIGITA: I think it’s a curse
BELLA: It’s on your toes.
BIRGITA: Will I be marked forever?
KITTEN: Grass all around us so soft and brand new feels like velvet under my paws. So many shades of green, I wonder if we can name them all.
CLUCKY/HENS: So soft so green so soft so green
KITTEN: So many shades of green, how can we name them all?
(Song Ends)
BRIGITA: Do you think I will be marked by this dirt forever?
ROSIE: Bark, Bark! Coming around again! Can you believe all the different greens there are here? Bark Bark!
BELLA: That darn dog! I wish she would quit startling us like that!
KITTEN: Meow, Oh Bella, she is just excited too.
BRIGITA: Really, show some restraint!
BRIGIT:There are so many different types of plants and trees I've never seen before.
CLUCKY:(Chomp) So many new things to sample! I wonder what all these different greens taste like.
KITTEN: According to Jacob Olsen and the color meanings website. There are 134 different shades of green.
BELLA: Why do you know that?
CLUCKY: Do you think that means there are 134 different flavors?
KITTEN: Maddox and I have been looking up all kinds of facts about Washington. Its nickname is the evergreen state.
BRIGITA: This green grass tastes much sweeter than the Florida grass.
BRIGIT: How many different shades of green do you see?
CLUCKY: I see lime, seafoam, pear, seaweed, crocodile and pickle.
BELLA: Pickle?
CLUCKY: Yeah Xander gave me a pickle as a snack on the way up... I guess I don't see that shade but it was on my mind.
KITTEN: Meow Oh Clucky. Your shades of green seem to all remind you of Florida.
BRIGIT:I see moss, pine, juniper, mint, fern and Evergreen.
BRIGITA:Look at you, those shades sound like they come from washing machine. I mean Washington. I guess, we had better learn to say the state right if we want others to believe we live here now.
BELLA: Why is it called the evergreen state? Does that mean we won 't have to worry about the fluffy white blanket of doom? (SFX) also known as snow.
KITTEN: I wish that was true Bella. No, it is July and very green right now because it is summer. All the trees have their leaves. It is called the Evergreen state because of all the docent type of pine trees or evergreen trees. They have needle-like leaves that do not lose their color or fall off the trees all year round, unlike the deciduous trees.
BRIGITA: Bless you.
KITTEN: What? I did not sneeze. I said deciduous trees.
BRIGITA: Bless you again.
KITTEN: No, Brigita a deciduous tree is one that loses its leaves in the fall or winter.
ROSIE: Bark Bark! You have not moved very far! Did you see there is a pond with lily pads? I wonder if there are fish? I had better get another look! Bark!
(Chicken Commotion)
CLUCKY: Tarnation! That little beast surprised me again!
BRIGIT: I get she is excited to be out of the car but really?!
BELLA: She is slowing down some…
BRIGITA: There is a pond? What if there is a gator in that one?
KITTEN: Don’t worry Brigita, Alligators do not live in Washington.
CLUCKY: (Flapping) Oh I see it from up on this boulder. Oh my tail feathers, the little beast is right, this yard is huge! There is a pond with a little bridge and a waterfall!
KITTEN: Hop (SFX) Oh my! We are so high up! I can see so many things!
BRIGITA: What on earth is that?!
CLUCKY: The giant pointy thing all covered in white?
KITTEN: That’s Mt. Hood! Maddox said you could see it from the yard! It’s enormous!
BELLA: This is not flat like Florida. Are we in danger of falling off?
BRIGIT: Why is that one white? The rest of the hills are green and have the spiky trees.
CLUCKY: Those are pine trees. They look like the big tree that they bring in at winter, at Christmas, with all those yummy treats underneath.
KITTEN: Yes you are right Clucky. They do use pine trees for Christmas trees.
BELLA: But why is that mountain thingy white when everything else is green?
KITTEN: It’s because it’s so high up. It’s a different climate.
CLUCKY: I’m not going to climb it! I’d freeze my toes! I’m pretty sure they do not make chicken boots.
KITTEN: No Clucky, a climate is a long term weather pattern in a region. It means the weather up on the mountain is very different from the weather up here.
BRIGITA: But we’re up on a mountain too.
KITTEN: True, but our mountain top is just under 2000 feet but Mt. Hood is 11,249 feet in elevation.
CLUCKY: There’s an elevator?
KITTEN: Elevation not elevator. Elevation is a measurement from sea level, where the ocean, is to the height of where we are standing on.
BRIGIT: So Florida must have been close to sea level because Piper said she had flown to the ocean to get fish and she never mentioned any big hills.
BELLA: Did Florida even have hills? I don’t remember seeing any from our perch.
KITTEN: Very observant Bella, you’re correct. Florida is very flat. Our little town was only 25 feet above sea level.
CLUCKY: 25 feet? That’s only 2 ½ alligators long! That’s not very high at all.
BRIGITA: We are so much higher now. It’s amazing how much more we can see. What is that blue thing down there?
KITTEN: Oh! That’s the Columbia River. It separates Oregon State from Washington.
CLUCKY: We can see two different States? We’re so International.
KITTEN: No Clucky, international would mean we could see two different countries. These are States.
Clucky : So we’re inter- statal.
KITTEN: No, i don’t think that’s a thing.
ROSIE: (panting a little bit more) Big white mountain at 12 o’clock. (Pant) Have you guys seen all that snow? (as she runs off again)
CLUCKY: Oh she caught me off guard again!
BELLA: : Do we need to worry about all that snow?
BRIGIT: Is it heading this way?
BRIGITA: Maybe it’ll get this dirt off my claw!
KITTEN: Hold on. I told you Mt.Hood has a different climate. It is much colder up there and can have snow all year round. We are safe. It is July and it’s the middle of summer and it’ll be many months before we see snow up here.
BELLA: How can you be sure? It does not look that far away.
BRIGITA: What if it sneaks over here at night like a fox?
BRIGIT: Do you feel that chill in the air?
(Frantic clucking from hens)
CLUCKY: Ladies Ladies Calm Down ( Music Starts)
C: Oh look around you,
This view will astound you
We’ve made it to the
Top of the World
KITTEN: A mountain with snow,
and a river below
What else will we find here
On top of the world?
BRIGITA: But what lurks in the shade
Or behind that glade?
It feels quite cold here
On top of the world.
BRIGIT: So many unknown
And did something just moan?
Here on top of the world
ALL: Have no fear, we are all right here.
Have no fear, we are all right here.
Family here on top of the world
Family here on top of the world
Got to be with my family,
Got to be with my family
Top of the world
ROSIE: Bark Pant Bark! Great song! (Pant) We are on top of the world (Pant) Do you think the air is thinner up here? (Pant) Bark (Pant) Bark Bark!
BRIGITA: Brauk! Can we kick her out of the family?
CLUCKY: I vote yes! I don’t think my ticker can take more surprises. Cock a doodle do!
BELLA: I mean really!
KITTEN: We don’t vote family members out. We all have different challenges and strengths. I am glad we have Rosie on our side. She keeps us on our toes and she is always looking out for us.
BRIGIT: Or making us look out for her. Brauk!
KITTEN: Meow, I know she can be a little much at times but she means well. She is just more excited than most.
BRIGITA: Is what she said true? Is the air thinner up here? Is that another thing we need to worry about?
CLUCKY: Oh my! I thought my legs were just wobbly from being in the truck so long. Maybe it’s cause I’m not getting enough air! Brauk!
KITTEN: Meow Meow (laughing)
BELLA: What are you laughing at?
BRIGIT: Bauk! I don’t see how lack of air is a laughing matter.
KITTEN: Meow, it is not. But we are in no danger of low oxygen up here. The oxygen level at sea level is 20.9% and at 2000 ft is 19.4%. This is not a level that any of us would even notice. Most people don’t start feeling the effects of altitude till at least 5000 ft in elevation, then the oxygen is still at 17.3%. So most people only notice it when they do an activity or sport. Rosie is panting because she has been running the entire time she has been out of the car.
BRIGITA: Why do you know that?
KITTEN: Meow, It was a very long trip and Maddox and I read a lot of books about Washington and mountains on the way here.
BELLA: It sure was a lot of driving to get here. I hope I never have to get in a truck again!
ROSIE: Bark (Pant) I could not make it around again (pant) It’s too big (pant) so many smells (pant) must lay down (pant) oh my this grass is so soft… Snore
CLUCKY: Brauk! I think we are going to like it here! If this place can put the little beast to sleep it can’t be that bad.
BRIGITA: But there are so many new and strange things, like all the different greens, the prickly trees, the snow covered mountains.
BRIGIT: The strange noises, the hills, waterfall, the pond. I feel so small.
BELLA: It’s so overwhelming!
KITTEN: Don’t worry, we have lots of time to explore and discover all the new things around us.
CLUCKY: That’s right! We will discover it all together!
ROSIE: SNORE
MOM: Ok kids, come on. Lets get all the animals in and get them settled for the night.
XANDER: Mom, Do we have to go in already?
MADDOX: Come on Kitten, I’ll show you our new room!
KITTEN: Meow! Goodnight Ladies and Clucky. I can hardly wait to see what tomorrow will bring!
MOM: Come on Xander, I’ll help you get the chickens settled in the garage tonight. We can move them to their new coup tomorrow.
XANDER: But Mom, Clucky and I have not got a chance to battle the bushes yet.
CLUCKY: Brauk! A bush battle! Show me where! Brauk Brauk!
XANDER: Look he’s excited!
MOM: There will be plenty of battles ahead of you both. It’s been a long day for everyone. Look at poor Rosie, I think she has fallen asleep on the grass.
XANDER: Ok, Come on Commander Clucky and ladies. Let's find you a nice spot for the night. I’ll grab some extra worms and some grass for you too.
BRIGITA: You had me at worms! Brauk!
CLUCKY: Brauk Brauk! Fall in line ladies there is food awaiting!
BELLA: All this fresh air has made me hungry
BRIGIT: I wonder what our new coup will be like.
MOM: Oh poor Rosie, you just tuckered yourself out.
ROSIE: Snore… Must smell that over there. Whine..
MOM: Hush now, I’ll carry you in.
DAD: Come on Jack, looks like everyone is headed in.
JACK: Oh but this grass…. Ruff
DAD: Come on boy!
