Season 3 Episode 7 : Over the Rainbow Bridge
JACP (cough) (breathing heavy) Ruff! Hey, (Cough) young whippersnapper. Rosie, come here.
ROSIE: Me? What? You want me? What’s going on Jack?
JACK: My time has come. I’m about to take my final nap.
ROSIE: What? What are you talking about? You nap all the time. What do you mean your final nap?
JACK: I’m old Rosie, and the time is coming when I won’t be around anymore.
ROSIE: What no! You are a member of this family, you will always be here with us.
JACK: I wish that were true. But alas, there comes a time when every dog must pass on over the rainbow bridge and join all the other dogs of the past in the giant dog park in the sky.
ROSIE:Oh that sounds like so much fun! A rainbow bridge, do you think you can see through it as you walk over it? And lots of other dogs to play with? Can I come too? When are you going?
JACK: (Cough) You’ll come one day but not with me. You need to stay and protect the family. It will be your job now.
ROSIE: Wait, do you mean you are not coming back?
JACK: No, Rosie, I am not.
ROSIE: Well it sounds like a really nice place with a fancy bridge and lots of play time and running but why won’t you come back? We will miss you. (Whine)
JACK: That’s how it works Rosie, once you go, you can not come back.
ROSIE: So you will just be forever napping on the pillow?
JACK: (Cough, laugh) No, you misunderstand. My time has come to pass on.
ROSIE: Pass on? (Proper sounding voice) Like no thank you, no more kibble for me. I’m watchin my diet. That kind of pass on?
JACK: (Rough laugh) No, I mean I am going to die soon. I won’t be here and I will pass on over the rainbow bridge to the giant dog park in the sky.
ROSIE: What? You're dying!? No! We need you. Who will bark at Kitten? And the trees? (Whine) Who will curl up next to the dad person on the end of the bed? I curl up next to the mom person’s feet and you sleep by the dad. I can’t do both.
JACK: I know it’s a lot to leave you with, but it will be your job now. Protect the family. I know you’ll do a good job.
ROSIE: Bark! No! No you can’t go. (whine)
JACK: We all must go some day.
ROSIE: No Bark! I’ll get the mom person, she’ll know what to do. Bark bark bark (running noise) Mom! Mom person!
(Music Fade)
MADDOX: It's so hard to believe he’s gone. For as long as I can remember Jack has always been around. He was a part of the family even before I was. Right mom?
MOM: Yes, he was. He was our first new family member after your Dad and I got married. We used to joke that he was our first kid.
DAD: He was much easier to potty train than you and your brother.
XANDER & MADDOX: Hey! (chuckle) (MOM & DAD laugh)
XANDER: Are we supposed to be laughing? Isn’t that disrespectful to Jack’s memory.
MOM: No honey, it’s not disrespectful. Jack brought a lot of joy to our family and we want to remember the good things about him. Sometimes that means we have silly connections too. Although he was easier to potty train, I do remember one time before you kids were born, your dad and I had been traveling a lot and Jack had been staying with friends or at a hotel for dogs while we were gone. I had gotten the suitcase out to pack for another trip, it was laying on my bedroom floor. I walked into the closet to get some clothes to pack and Jack went over to the suitcase and was sniffing it. When I came back out of the closet with an armload of clothes he looked right at me then lifted his leg and peed all over the suitcase!
MADDOX: What?! Why would he do that?
XANDER: Do you think it was an accident?
MOM: Oh No, Jack was a very smart dog. I think it was his way of telling us he was tired of us traveling.
DAD: Even though animals can’t speak, they have their way of getting the message across.
XANDER: What happened to the suitcase?
MOM: I’m pretty sure it got tossed.
ROSIE: (Sigh)
MOM: Rosie, do you have something to say?
ROSIE: (sigh)
MADDOX: Rosie seems sad. She is just curled up next to you Mom.
MOM: I’m sure Rosie is a bit sad. She, like you, has always known our family with Jack in it. When we got Rosie she was just a little puppy and Jack showed her the ropes.
XANDER: Did Jack love her right away and want to play with her?
MADDOX: No, don't you remember? He would growl at her if she came near his food or his chew bone. Also, Dad has that silly picture of Jack curled up in her dog bed.
XANDER: Oh yeah, that picture is so funny. Rosie’s dog bed was so much smaller than Jack’s bed. He had his back half curled up in the bed and the other half was hanging off the bed on the tile floor.
MADDOX: (giggles) Yeah, and the look on his face is like, “What are you looking at? I totally fit in this bed.”
ROSIE: I remember that. He told me that both beds were his. When I asked why he did not fit in the smaller one he told me it was a special dog yoga pillow to help him with his curled up dog pose. (Sigh)
MOM: That was a big sigh Rosie. Do you remember that? I’m glad Jack warmed up to you after that. Just a week later I have another picture of the two of them curled up in Jack’s big bed together.
DAD: Jack loved us all very much, he was always looking out for all of us.
MADDOX: What was the story about him when I was a little baby and I pulled his whiskers?
MOM: Oh, yes. When you were little probably about 6 months, you could not even crawl yet, I had set you on the floor propped up on your boppy pillow. That is a circular pillow for babies. Jack was very curious about you. He walked over and was sniffing you. You giggled because I’m pretty sure his whiskers tickled your face but then you reached up and grabbed a hold of his beard. Jack did not know what to do. He did not want to hurt you but he also did not want you pulling on his whiskers. He looked over at me and whined.
DAD: He was probably thinking, Get this little thing off me!
MOM: Probably.
XANDER: What did you do?
MOM: I reached over and gently removed Maddox’s hands from his beard.
MADDOX: What did Jack do?
MOM: Once he was free he backed up out of your reach. Then gave you a lick on the back of your head. Where he was sure your little arms could not reach him. He wanted you to know he still liked you but he also wanted to be sure you would not be able to grab him again.
XANDER: Did I ever grab Jack’s whiskers?
DAD: Not that I recall, however, when you came along, we had to stop taking Jack to dog parks with you kids for a while.
XANDER: Why? What’s a dog park?
DAD: A dog park is a big fenced yard setup to take your dogs off leash and let them run sound with other dogs.
MADDOX: Like a playground for dogs where they play with their friends.
DAD: Precisely
XANDER: After I came along, Jack did not want to play with his dog friends?
DAD: Not exactly. We went into the enclosure and Jack started to run around like usual. He used to love to run and bark and have the other dogs chase him. However, this time, he started to run and when he was running back by us. There were several dogs that were around you kids. Xander was a baby in the stroller and Maddox you were walking along side. Other dogs were coming up to sniff you and greet you both.
MADDOX: What was wrong with that?
DAD: Nothing, but it made Jack nervous. He came back and just wanted to sit next to the both of you. Sometimes he would even get up and stand in front of you both so other dogs could not get too close.
MOM: I think he was worried that something would happen to you too.
XANDER: But the other dogs were not going to hurt us.
MOM: No of course not but Jack had a strong sense of loyalty and duty to the family and felt he needed to protect you two at all times.
MADDOX: So he did not get to run and play with his friends?
DAD: No he did, however, we had to make sure you two were not in the dog park area. But that was only when you were really little. After Xander could walk, he went back to playing normally with the other dogs.
KITTEN: meow..
MADDOX: OH look who wandered up stairs. It's ok kitten you can come on up.
ROSIE: OH hey kitten. Welcome to upstairs. (scamper noise) want me to show you around?
KITTEN: It's so strange to come up here.
MOM: There goes Rosie. She always has to greet: everyone.
MADDOX: I'm so glad Rosie likes Kitten. It's nice she can now come upstairs and explore.
ROSIE: Over here is my food and water. (little growl) that's just for me. I don't think cats should eat it.
KITTEN: Don't worry, I don't really like the smell of it.
ROSIE:(sniffs) It smells good to me. But yes, it must only smell good to dogs. OH do you want to go outside?
KITTEN: But I just got up here... I don't think you can jump out my window downstairs.
ROSIE: No silly, you can come out the magic door.
KITTEN: OH yeah! I'd love to see your magic door.
ROSIE: Come, it's over here. You just have to get close and give it a little sniff (sniffing) And Voila!!
KITTEN: OH wow! It just opened!
ROSIE: Quick run through before it starts to close. (door closing noise)
KITTEN: Oh you're right it is starting to move again. Whew! I made it! Have you ever got caught in the door?
ROSIE: Me? Are you kidding? I’m too fast! One time Jack was part way through and it closed on him.
KITTEN: Oh no! What happened? Is that how…?
ROSIE: No, no. He gave a little bark of surprise and then it started to open again. He was not hurt. He told me it just nudged him and he barked out of surprise.
KITTEN: Oh well that’s good news. So if you get caught in it, will it just open back up?
ROSIE: Yeah, that’s what happened with Jack. I’ve never been caught by the door. (sigh)
KITTEN: You miss him don’t you?
ROSIE: Yeah, it's so quiet without him. I’m used to hearing him snore on his pillow, bark at the trees or fart his old dog farts.
KITTEN: He did not fart!
ROSIE: Yes he did and he would always do it when I was walking by so that sometimes the family would think it was me!
KITTEN: (giggle) Meow, you are joking.
ROSIE:(Giggle) I’m not.
KITTEN: I’m sorry, we should probably not be laughing. I didn’t mean to make light of the situation.
ROSIE: No, it's ok. The parent people were just telling Maddox and Xander that it was good to laugh. That’s how they would want to be remembered. All the things that make you smile.
KITTEN: (Splat) Meow! What was that?! I’m soaked and covered in snow!
ROSIE: Bark Bark! What?! (laughing) Are you ok?
KITTEN: What just happened? Did someone throw a snowball at me? How dare they! Oh I am so wet!
ROSIE: It looks like a large chunk of snow just slid off the tree branch above you. It happens a lot now that the temperatures are warming up and the snow is melting away. (Giggles) That really got you. You are suddenly half as big. I did not realize your fur was so fluffy. You look so tiny now.
CHIP: (Giggle) Direct hit
ROSIE: Bark! What was that?
CHIP: Flaming Cinnamon, I’ve been spotted.
KITTEN: What? That was on purpose. Is that the little chipmunk from this fall? The one that got me stuck up in that same tree.
ROSIE: (Sniff) I think so. He smells the same. (Yelling up to Chip) Hey that was not very nice.
CHIP: Of course it was. It made you laugh and maybe it will teach the predator a lesson about chasing smaller creatures.
ROSIE: Well I did laugh but that is only because I have never seen Kitten soaked. With her fur all wet she looks even smaller. (giggles) I’m sorry Kitten, I can’t help but laugh.
KITTEN: Don’t worry Rosie, I’m glad it makes you laugh. I know I look ridiculous. As for you chipmunk, I was only chasing you because you ran away. I just wanted to talk to you. I did not want to hurt you.
CHIP: That’s what the little white hamster Rubix said but I don’t believe her. You’re still a predator.
KITTEN: You met Rubix? When?
CHIP: Before the snows came… I had smelled food.
KITTEN: (Gasp) It was you who came in and ate my food! I remember there was a day when I came back from visiting Clucky and half my food was gone and there was a big mess. I asked Rubix about it but she would not tell me what happened.
CHIP: I guess I should say thank you for the food. It helped me get through the winter. Your food made a nice break from acorns all winter. This is my first time out of the burrow since shortly after that day.
KITTEN: (Shaking out) Ugh! I am so wet! It is going to take me hours to dry. That is not a very nice thank you. Why aren’t you still hibernating? There is still snow on the ground and falling off the trees.
CHIP: First off, Chipmunks don’t hibernate like other animals. We spend most of the winter in our burrows sleeping a lot but on days like today, when it is warm we get up and go explore for a little bit. It gets a little boring staying underground and sleeping all the time. We don’t have any windows in our burrow so it’s hard to know what’s going on above.
KITTEN: Well you did not pick a very nice day to come explore. Its very cloudy and gloomy and everything is wet because of the melting snow and occasional drizzling rain coming down.
CHIP: You are right but I didn’t know that till I came out exploring. It is warmer than it has been. It seems like spring is coming soon. I’m tired of looking at the dirt walls on my burrow. I’m so lonely I am even having a conversation with predators!
ROSIE: Where is your burrow?
CHIP: Oh no! I’m not telling you that! I don’t fancy getting eaten in my sleep!
ROSIE: I would never eat you. I was just thinking we could come visit if you are bored.
CHIP: You are both very strange predators.
ROSIE: We know what it is like to be lonely.
KITTEN: I know a chat with a friend makes me feel better when I’m bored or lonely.
CHIP: I don’t have many friends. I’m one of 8 brothers and sisters but once we we’re 6 weeks old we leave our nest and make our own way in the world.
KITTEN: 6 weeks! I took me almost 2 weeks to just open my eyes! I could not imagine being out on my own at 6 weeks.
CHIP: One of my sisters left at 5 weeks. Chipmunks are very independent but that also means we can get lonely.
ROSIE: You can come visit us anytime we always like to chat.
KITTEN: Although I would appreciate it next time if you did not launch a branch full of snow at me.
CHIP: I’ll think about it. You are very odd predators. You are a cat and a dog right? Don’t cats and dogs dislike each other?
ROSIE: We are all part of the same family. Kitten and I are good friends. We had our differences at first but now we’re good friends.
KITTEN: It can be scary to trust other species but I have found a lot of wonderful friends that way. If you want to meet some other creatures, after I dry off you can come down to the chicken coop with me and I’ll introduce you to Clucky and the hens.
CHIP: You would do that? Even after I got you soaked?
KITTEN: Yes, I will. I’m going back in now to dry off. How about we meet when the sun oh wait there is no sun today. It’s so gloomy.
CHIP: Go in and dry off. I know where the coop is. I’ll hear you when you head down there. I’ll join you but I’m going to stay up in the trees.
ROSIE: I wish I could go. It’s nice to meet… wait what is your name?
CHIP: Oh it’s Chip.
ROSIE: Nice to meet you Chip. I’m Rosie and this is Kitten.
CHIP: Kitten? Not Murder Mittens? That’s what Rubix called you.
KITTEN: (sigh) You should never believe what Rubix tells you. She’s delusional.
ROSIE: Despacito? She goes slowly? That can't be right.
KITTEN: No Delusional. She believes things that can not possibly be true.
CHIP: & Rosie: (understanding) OH!
CHIP: Ok, I’ll see you later Kitten. Bye Rosie.
ROSIE: Adios
KITTEN: Later
(Music Transition)
CLUCKY: What in tarnation do you think is going on? Xander is never this late in coming down to see us. Cock-a-doodle-doo. Xander, can you hear me? Where are you?
BRIGITA: Maybe if we all started clucking loudly someone might hear us.
BELLA: Do you think something happened to Xander?
BRIDGET: If something happened to Xander, you think one of the family would have been down to check on us. With all the clouds and gloom it's hard to know what how late it is but our coop door has been open for a long time. Usually he’s down shortly after it opens.
CLUCKY: Yeah, and no one has come to open the enclosure door. We cannot roam free and see what’s going on up at the house. What if they need our help?
BRIGITA: How could we possibly help?
CLUCKY: Who knows? Maybe they are under attack by pirates and we are needed to step in and save the day! (pirates of the caribbean type music)
BELLA: Pirates!
BRIDGET: Really Clucky? Pirates? We live on a mountain top in Washington. How would the pirates have gotten here?
CLUCKY: Maybe they are space pirates and they landed their rocket ship up by the house. Maybe the whole family is being held suspended in their tractor beam and they need us to break out of our coop and save the day.
BRIGITA: Oh my Space Pirates! We must save them! Bawk! Is anyone out there?! Can you please help us! We must rescue our family!
CLUCKY & HENS: lost of bawks and cries for help
CLUCKY: Wait I hear something. Someone is coming. (SFX: walking in brush sound)
BRIDGET: Oh I hear it too but the sound is coming from the wrong direction. It’s coming from deeper in the woods not from up at the house.
TATUM: Greetings my feathered friends. Whatever has you so upset?
CLUCKY: Tatum! Do you think you can help us?! We think the family may be being held captive by space pirates as we need to go save them. No one has come down all day. They must be in trouble. We can’t find a way to open the enclosure. Please help us.
NEIL: Space Pirates! What are those?!
BELLA: Oh Neil, Hi, you are here too!
CLUCKY: They are evil invaders from space! They fly in on their rocket ship and can hold you immobile in their tractor beam.
NIEL: What’s immobile?
TATUM: It means you cannot move.
BRIGITA: We just have to save them!
TATUM: How do you know there are space pirates up at the house?
BRIDGET: We don’t.
CLUCKY: That is our best guess to what is going on. We have not seen Xander or any of the other family yet today, not even Kitten. Something is wrong! Very wrong I can feel it.
NEIL: Would you like me to run up to the house and see if they are being held captive?
BELLA: Oh would you?
BRIGITA: That is so brave of you!
TATUM: Wait, I hear light footsteps. Something is coming down from the house.
CLUCKY: Is it a person?
TATUM: No, the footprints are too quiet to be a human. This creature is small. I can only hear them due to my large ears and great hearing.
NEIL: I hear them too mama. Should we leave?
TATUM: No Neil, I believe it is just the small cat, Kitten
CLUCKY: Oh Thank goodness! She will have some answers!
KITTEN: Well hello everyone. Tatum and Oh Neil. It’s been a while. It's nice to see you again.
TATUM: Greetings Kitten
NEIL: Hi
CLUCKY: Just come out and tell us Kitten... we can take it. Is the whole family being held captive by space pirates? What is our best plan of attack?
KITTEN: Space pirates? Attack? What are you bawking about?
CLUCKY: No one has been down all day. We know something terrible is going on and we are ready to help.
KITTEN: (Sigh) Oh, yes, no one has been down here today. I can see why you are so worried.
CLUCKY: How many are there? Do we stand a chance? We do have the element of surprise on our side.
KITTEN: Clucky, there are no space pirates.
BRIGITA: Oh thank goodness!
BELLA: That’s a relief.
NEIL: Bummer they sounded so interesting.
CLUCKY: What in tarnation is going on then? No one has been down here all day.
KITTEN: I am sorry that no one has been down here yet today. I have some bad news. (Sigh) Captain Jack has died. (Gasps and exclamations from those around)
CLUCKY: What happened to Captain Jack? Was he sick? Was it during a patrol? Did he die defending the house?
KITTEN:Nothing that dramatic Clucky. Jack was really old and it was just his time.
KITTEN: I’ve been up there trying to help comfort the family and Rosie.
NEIL: Who was Captain Jack? Was he the leader of the space pirates? He was a captain?
KITTEN: (Chuckle) No he was not a space pirate. He was the big dog that lived up at the house. He has been with the family for over 15 years before any of the rest of us.
TATUM: I am so sorry for your loss. It is never easy to say goodbye to a friend.
BRIDGET: Well he was not exactly a friend.
BRIGITA: Until Kitten came along we barley knew his name. We just called him the big beast.
BELLA: Even though we were not friends. I am sad that he is gone.
CLUCKY: Oh Poor Xander, he was close with the big beast, I mean Jack. No wonder he did not make it down. I’m sorry that was the reason. I wish I could get up there and help him.
NEIL: How can you help? It does not sound like there is anything that can be done for the Captain.
TATUM: You are correct Neil the is nothing that can be done for Captain Jack now. He has crossed over the rainbow bridge. However, I think Clucky was referring to the three C’s of grief.
CLUCKY: Say what now? I don’t know what your are talking about. I just want to get close to Xander and let him know he is not alone.
TATUM: Exactly. That is the C, Connect. When people experience loss, they can feel isolated or alone. It is important that they connect with others. It’s not about what you say or do, sometimes it is just helpful to have someone close to you so you do not feel alone.
KITTEN: What are the other 2 C’s?
TATUM: They are Chose and Communicate.
BRIGITA: Chose, what choice did the family have in this situation?
TATUM: Very good question Brigita. The family did not get a choice on what happened. However, they get to choose what is best for them. It sounds like today, the family has chosen to come together and remember Captain Jack.
KITTEN: Yes, some of the stories they told were even funny. I was not sure at first if it was ok to laugh but I found out that it was ok to remember him anyway you wanted. That is also part of choice.
BELLA: What about Communicate?
TATUM: Everyone processes loss in their own way. Sometimes they laugh because of a funny memory, sometimes they are angry that this happened or sad because they can no longer talk to that person. Maybe they are feeling all of those things and more. It can be a very overwhelming time. The important thing to remember is that what you are feeling is ok. They are your feelings. The best thing you can do is to communicate them. Do not keep them bottled up inside. Also it helps to communicate what you need to those around you.
CLUCKY: I could have used a little communication today! I was so worried.
TATUM: That is understandable Clucky and I’m sure that Xander will be down to talk to you soon. However, it is important that you let him have the space to process his feelings and not demand too much of him right now.
CLUCKY: Of course. I wish it had been space pirates.
BELLA: I’m glad it was not space pirates.
NEIL: I hear something in the trees.
BRIGITA: Do you think it’s space pirates?
NEIL: No, it sounds too small for that. Although, I don’t know. How big are space pirates?
KITTEN: I don’t think space pirates exist. Oh it might be Chip. (branch rustling) Chip is that you? Be careful Neil, you are under that branch that is still heavy with snow. Chip might help it fall on to you.
NEIL: Who is Chip? (Splat Noise) Whew! Thanks for the warning Kitten that just missed me.
CHIP: Aww Cinnamon! I missed.
KITTEN: Chip you really should not go around dropping snow on others.
CHIP: But it was so funny before. I thought it was a good way to break the ice. Ha! Break the ice! Cause that’s what I did! I broke the ice and the snow fell.
BRIGITA: Oh I get it! An ice breaker is a way to start a conversation and he actually broke ice to drop snow on Neil to join our conversation! How clever!
NEIL: Easy for you to say, you were not almost covered in snow.
KITTEN: I understand Neil, he did it to me earlier only I had no warning and was completely covered in snow. It took a couple hours for my fur to fully dry. However, it helped cheer up Rosie and we got to know Chip a little bit, so I guess it was worth the sudden cold bath.
CLUCKY: Oh my tail feathers, I wish I could have seen that!
KITTEN: You can ask Rosie all about it next time you see her.
CLUCKY: Oh I will! So Chip, what brings you down here.
CHIP: ummm, well Kitten said she would introduce me to all of you. However, I just thought I would be meeting chickens. I did not know there would be a couple of deer down here too.
TATUM: We were just passing through when we heard Clucky and the hens in distress. We decided we must check on our feathered friends and lend a hoof if needed.
CHIP: I think this is too much. I have been on my own for the last few months in my burrow. I can’t handle this many new animals. I’m out of here.
KITTEN: Wait, Chip, it will be ok. Everyone here is very nice.
CHIP: Nope! Too Much!
TATUM: Hark, I hear the people are coming down from the house.
CHIP: Flaming Cinnamon! I’m outta here!
KITTEN: Oh, please consider coming back when the snow is all gone. We would like to be friends.
CHIP: Maybe Bye
TATUM: We must go as well. Your humans need you. We won’t interfere.
CLUCKY: It was great to see you all again and thanks for all the advice on dealing with grief. We will C you later! Get it C!
NIEL: Aw C! Like the three Cs of grief! Nice Clucky!
