Season 4, Episode 2:
Ready, Set Go!
SFX: Wind blowing window creaking, Scrabbling noises.
RUBIX: (Coughing) Oh, What is it? I am smelling so much smoke! (SFX: Wind) Oh the wind is just blowing it in the window! I wish they would close it! (Coughing)
SFX: Scrabbling noise
RUBIX: What is that noise?
CHIP: Hello again oh doom bringer. Is all of this smoke your handy work?
RUBIX: What? Oh it is you. Chip the Chipmunk. I see you have finally returned. Why didn’t you come back this spring? I have not seen you all summer. I thought you were going to come back and help me get out of this cage.
CHIP: I did come back once when the snow was starting to melt. I was able to drop a whole branch of snow on the cat! She was totally soaked! Did you hear about that?
RUBIX: Oh that was you? Yes, I did hear about that. She complained the whole time while she dried off. Nice work!
CHIP: Thank you! I have also tried to stop by a few times when the weather got warmer but the window is always closed. Why is that?
RUBIX: Ugh! The humans put in a new door that opens on its own upstairs and Kitten uses that most of the time. You are right the human does not open the window that often anymore. Alright you are forgiven. (Wind Gust) (Coughing) Oh this blasted smoke!
CHIP: (Coughing) I agree and it's only getting worse. Are you the cause of this? Is it part of your revolution?
RUBIX: Me? No. Although it may work out to help me finally escape my imprisonment.
CHIP: If you didn’t cause it then who did?
RUBIX: Some careless human from what I have heard. There were some humans playing with something called fireworks in these hot dry conditions and it started the fire. Although I thought it was out a week ago. I wonder how it got so bad.
CHIP: I don’t know. Maybe it has something to do with all the wind. It is bad out there. My whole family is leaving. I just stopped in to to see if I could grab some food before we head out. Is that cat around?
RUBIX: No the cat is off probably with her bird brain friends. Help yourself to her food.
CHIP: Thanks! (Munching sounds) Alright Cheeks are packed!
RUBIX: How about you climb up here and open my cage? I could follow you and your family out of here.
SFX (Footsteps)
CHIP: Is that your human?! I’ve got to go!
RUBIX: No Wait! Come BaAAACK! (squeak squeak Squeeeeeeak! )
MADDOX: Rubix are you ok? What was that? Was there an animal leaving? Are you scaring it away?
RUBIX: Squeak squeak Squeekum! No of course not you interrupting human! You have foiled my plans and let my chance at freedom run out the window!
MADDOX: Oh Rubix! You are really upset.
RUBIX: Of course I am upset! You have inadvertently foiled me again! (coughing)
MADDOX: Oh no! Are you coughing from all the smoke? Come on, let's get you packed up in your travel cage. I’m so sorry but your big habitat is too big for the cars. Mom and Dad are not sure how we are going to fit all the pets and people in the 2 cars we have.
RUBIX: No! I am not going! Stay Back (Snaps at her)
MADDOX: Whoa! That was a close one. Come on Rubix, I know you don’t like your travel cage but it is not safe to stay here. I need you to get in here. I put in fresh fluff and your favorite seeds in there. Look, there is a whole dish of them.
RUBIX: (Gurgle) Stop that you traitorous stomach! Don’t you remember how small that cage was?
MADDOX: (sweetly) Come on Rubix, you know you want a treat.
RUBIX: (gurgle gurgle) No, I will not be controlled by you stomach! I am going in my house. We have a snack or two stashed in there. You can eat that. (sad gurgle?) Don’t complain! (Rustling)
MADDOX: No Rubix, don't go in your house. Ok, Fine I’ll just move your house in as well.
RUBIX: (Squeak!) Wait What? No!! Maybe I can leap from the door of the house and escape, Oh my we are pretty high up. Whoa the house is moving. Steady you can do this.
MADDOX: Careful Rubix don’t fall out of your house. I’ve almost got to the travel cage.
RUBIX: Here I go! Geronimo! AHHH! Oof! Wait, what is this? I landed in fluff?
MADDOX: Whew! I caught you! Glad I had the travel cage open and you landed in the fluff. Are you ok?
RUBIX: Nooo! Foiled again! Squeeaaak! (Wailing)
MADDOX: You’ll be ok, just relax and rest in there.
XANDER: Maddox are you ready? Did you get Rubix Secured?
MADDOX: Hey Xander, I just got her in. She almost lept from her house but I caught her in the cage.
XANDER: Nice! I’ve got Brownie all ready. No need to catch him in his cage, he let me pick him up.
MADDOX: I tried that with Rubix but she snapped at me. Hey Brown Brown. How are you? Do you think you could teach Rubix some manners?
BROWNIE: Huh? Are you talking to me? (Squeak)
MADDOX: Are you looking for food?
XANDER: He is always looking for food. Did you grab the bag of food and treats? Mom and Dad do not know how long we will have to leave for.
MADDOX: Yep I’ve got that here in this bag. We had better get going.
XANDER: Any sign of Kitten yet?
MADDOX: No, I thought I saw an animal dash out the window when I entered the room but I think it was brown. It was not Kitten, she would not run away when I came in.
XANDER: Wonder what that was.
MADDOX: I wish I knew. I also wish Kitten was up here.
XANDER: She’s probably down with the chickens. Come on. Mom and Dad are waiting in the garage to pack up the hamsters in the car. Then we are going to head down to get the chickens. I’m sure we will see Kitten down there.
MADDOX: I hope you are right. I’m going to leave her window open just in case.
(Music Transition)
KITTEN: Whoa! This wind is crazy. I hope Clucky and the hens are ok. Yikes, that branch came down from nowhere! Just a little bit further and I’ll make it down to the coop (hopping sounds?) Clucky? Are you guys ok down here? Oh! Watch out for flying debris!
CLUCKY: Kitten!! It’s great to see you! It’s so windy!! What’s going on? This feels like hurricane level winds? I thought we didn’t get hurricanes in Washington!
KITTEN: It really does feel like it doesn’t it Clucky? But, no it’s far too dry to be a hurricane. And they definitely don’t get hurricanes in Washington. If we did, it would be called a typhoon.
BIRGITA: Oh my Kitten! You’re so brave to venture down. You’ve got some leaves or something caught in your fur
KITTEN: Oh gosh, the wind is terrible today and as I was coming down the path all sorts of stuff was flying around. I’m not surprised at all that I have leaves stuck on me. I’m just happy I didn’t get blown off the path!
BELLA: It’s not just windy, I can barely see anything. Is this smoke or are we in a cloud again?
KITTEN: I think it’s smoke Bella. I think the wind shifted just as Tatum was predicting and it’s pushing all the smoke towards us. I hope that doesn’t mean the fire is also being pushed back towards us!
BRIDGET: Chances are it is Kitten. This wind is so strong, that the embers would definitely blow into a different direction and could catch on stuff that hasn’t burned yet.
CLUCKY: WATCH OUT! There goes another branch!! Whoa! That was close!
VICTORIA: Oh no!!!! Ouch! (sfx-Thumping sound)
KITTEN: Who was that?
CLUCKY: I don’t know. Just a big blur of blue and black.
VICTORIA: It is I, Victoria Peckham.
BIRGITA: Victoria! My fellow Brit! Darling how are you? What are you doing here?
VICTORIA: Literally blown off course! What are you all still doing here?
CLUCKY: What do you mean?
VICTORIA: The fire has changed direction and is now headed towards this area!
CLUCKY, BELLA, BIRGITA, BRIDGET, KITTEN: (all panicky) What? Oh no! Ack!! No!!! Etc…
BIRGITA: I knew I should have left with Feral! This is ridiculous! Why aren’t we evacuating?
KITTEN: I think they’re packing up at the house. I heard a bunch of commotion but wanted to come down and check on you down here.
VICTORIA: Well I certainly hope for all your sake that they make haste!
CLUCKY: Why do you want them to make waste? There’s no time to make trash right now.
BIRGITA: Make haste Clucky!! As in hurry up!!!
BRIGET: It’s a British thing, Clucky.
VICTORIA: The whole forest is moving out! This wind is making it very difficult to go my intended path though! I’m hoping to meet up with the rest of my Stellar Jay friends. These winds are incredibly strong and this smoke is dreadful for my voice. (Cough cough, attempts to sing a warbled song and it sounds horrendous - more than usual.)
KITTEN: cough cough - You’re right Victoria, I feel like it’s more difficult to breathe down here.
BELLA: You don’t think that the family is going to leave and forget about us do you?
CLUCKY: Of course not. Cough cough. Xander would never abandon us like that.
BRIDGET: Where do you think we’ll go? Where does one go during an evacuation?
BIRGITA: Oh no! We’ll be homeless
KITTEN: I’m sure the family has a plan in place. Maybe we’ll stay somewhere in town?
BELLA: And how will we get there?
CLUCKY: Maybe we’ll be back in the cages like when we moved from Florida.
KITTEN:But they don’t have that truck anymore. You traveled in a really big cage. I don’t think they’ll be able to pack up that cage again.
VICTORIA: The problem with depending on humans for evacuation. Well, I must be off. This wind is making travel much more challenging so I must allow myself extra time to get to my rendezvous point.
CLUCKY: You’re meeting with a rat kangaroo?
VICTORIA: Rat kangaroo? No! Why would you think I’d be doing that? What is a rat kangaroo anyway?
CLUCKY: I don’t know! I was hoping you would tell me.
VICTORIA: You are a strange bird.
KITTEN: Victoria, I believe Clucky misheard you when you said rendezvous. He does that often. Rendezvous is another word for a meeting at a specific place and time.
CLUCKY: Do they have rat kangaroos there?
BRIDGET: Pretty sure that’s a no Clucky.
CLUCKY: That's a shame. It would have been interesting to see a rat kangaroo. I wonder if it’s more rat or more kangaroo. Like is it a small mini kangaroo or is it like a giant rat that jumps around.
KITTEN: I think we’d have to go to Australia to find out or at the very least find a book about Australian animals.
CLUCKY: Why would you go all the way to Australia?
KITTEN: That’s where you find Kangaroos and I’m assuming that rat kangaroos would also be there.
CLUCKY - I think I hear a calling for our next KFC adventure.
VICTORIA: KFC? What’s that?
CLUCKY: Kitten, Feral and Clucky!
VICTORIA: Is that the beast that tried to feed me to Kitten last time?
BRIDGET: the one and only.
VICTORIA: Ah, well, then I’ll definitely be off now. Wouldn’t want to run into that scoundrel again. Farewell fellow avian friends and feline. Don’t get caught in the fire now! I wish you all good health.
CLUCKY: Well that was an unexpected visit! But she definitely has me worried. Why do you suppose Xander hasn’t been down to get us all evacuated?
KITTEN: Maybe I should head back up and see what’s going on.
BELLA: Oh please do so Kitten
(Music Transition)
Garage:
SFX: door opens from house to garage.
XANDER: Mom, we’ve brought you the hamsters.
MOM: Oh good, thanks kids, we got a spot for their travel cages in the back of the trunk of my car. Man, I wish we still had the van. It had so much more space.
MADDOX: Are we going to be able to fit all the pets, us and all the stuff we need in the two vehicles?
DAD: We have to. This is all the space we have.
XANDER: But Dad, where are we going to put the chickens? When we drove from Florida we had a big truck to put their crate in the back. It won’t fit in Mom’s car or your SUV. What are we going to do? I am not leaving the chickens.
MADDOX: Oh No, We can’t leave the chickens, they are family too!
MOM: Calm down you two. I have a plan. See the tarp I have placed down there in the foot space of the backseat in Dad’s SUV. The chickens are going to ride there.
XANDER: How? There is no way they are going to stay in that small space. They are going to be flying around the SUV. I’m pretty sure that is not safe for driving.
DAD: Ha! No, that would not be safe. Don’t worry your Mom has a plan, she just explained it to me. We are going to make the chickens burritos!
(XANDER & MADDOX gasp!)
MADDOX: What?!
XANDER: No! I will not eat my chickens! Wait, has the fire already reached them? Are we too late? Have they been cooked?
MOM: No No no! Calm down and let me explain what your Dad means. The chickens are fine, the fire is getting close but it is still several miles away. We need to hurry to get them secured but no one is planning on eating them.
MADDOX: Then what did he mean by burritos?
MOM: Remember the roll of moving wrap we have left over from our move here?
XANDER: Yeah
MOM: It's a big roll of plastic that we used to wrap around items and hold them secure. Right?
MADDOX: Ok?
MOM: So what we are going to do is, I’m going to have you hold the chickens while I wrap them up in the plastic wrap. It is stretchy and will cling to itself but not stick to the chickens. It will hold their wings and feet secure so they can not move.
XANDER: I don’t think they will like not being able to move.
DAD: It won’t be for too long and you are right, we can’t have them flapping around in the car while I’m driving.
XANDER: So we are only going to wrap their feet and wings down and it won’t hurt them?
MOM: That’s the plan. Now, we’ve never done this before so it might take a couple of attempts to get it right. Xander, I’ll need you to hold them and keep them calm while I wrap them up.
MADDOX: Ok, now I see what you mean by chicken burrito.
MOM: We have everything else packed up. The last thing to do is to go down and wrap up the chickens. We wanted to be ready to leave as soon as we secured the chickens because we don’t want them to be burrito-wrapped longer than necessary. Everything else is packed up.
MADDOX: Not everything, We don’t have Kitten or Rosie in the vehicles yet.
DAD: Rosie’s and Kitten’s Travel crates are already in the vehicles next to each other. We just need to put them in once we load up the chickens.
MADDOX: We can’t Dad, I don’t know where Kitten is! I let her out this morning and she has not come back in through her window. I have called for her but nothing. I’m so worried.
DAD: It’s going to be ok, Maddox, Kitten is probably down with the chickens. You know how she likes to hang out there.
MADDOX: But what if she is not?
DAD: Well we will leave her window open and fill the bathtub up with water. That way she can come back in and have a safe place to stay if the fire does come up here.
MADDOX: You mean we might have to leave without her?
MOM: We are going to do everything we can to find her but we do need to hurry. We have been at a level 1 Alert for the last week because of the fire.
XANDER: A Level 1 Alert? What is that?
DAD: It means Be Ready & Be Alert. We have been watching the fire activity this whole time and also talking about what we might need to do in case we need to evacuate.
XANDER: What comes next? Level 2?
MOM: Yep! That means get your things packed up and get ready to go. The fire could be a real threat to your area and you could be told to leave very soon. Our area was switched to level 2 this morning. With all the wind last night and today, the fire has picked up and changed directions. It is close to jumping the lines that the firefighters have made.
MADDOX: Oh! Why can’t it just rain already?! I thought Washington was famous for its rain!
DAD: It does get a lot of rain but not in the summer.
MADDOX: But it is not Summer, it is Fall! It’s the beginning of October!
MOM: You are right, usually the rainy season comes in September but this year it has not come yet.
DAD: We can’t make it rain so come on, let's go get the chickens and hopefully Kitten so we can head out. If these winds keep up, I don’t think we have long till they move us to Level 3.
XANDER: What is Level 3?
MOM: Go Now!
(Music Transition)
(Short Scene with Piper & Bruce they leave as family is coming down to burrito the chickens)
BIRGITA:: I wonder what’s taking Kitten so long to come back with an update.
CLUCKY : Well it is super windy out. Maybe it’s taking her longer to get up to the house?
PIPER: INCOMING!!! ARGH, get out of the way, oh no. Not again!
BRUCE: Hey Pipes, watch out for……
CLUCKY: AH!!! PIPER?!
BRUCE: Clucky….. You guys ok?
PIPER: Oh gosh, sorry Clucky. I didn’t mean to fly into you again. Are you ok?
BRIDGET: Isn’t that kind of the standard landing?
CLUCKY: Aw, Piper, you know I don’t mind being your landing pad. I’ll catch you anytime.
PIPER: Oh Clucky. Aren’t you the sweetest? One of these days, I’m going to have a smooth landing. The winds today are crazy though. And the sky is this eerie grey and orangey kind of color. And the smoke is terrible. Cough cough.
CLUCKY: Yes, the smoke seems to be getting worse and the wind has really picked up. We’re waiting on Kitten to come back with a report about whether we’re being evacuated.
BRUCE: Pipes insisted that we come by and say goodbye because we’re evacuating too.
BRIDGET: Don’t you spend most of your time in and around water?
PIPER: Yes, but even the areas around the lake are getting super smoky. We didn’t want to worry about getting stuck here or getting caught in the fire. I would guess that you’ll be heading out soon. I can’t imagine <cough cough> that your family will be sticking around. Even from air, the smoke is so dense that we had a hard time pinpointing where the coop was exactly. That’s another reason for the crash and well the wind isn’t making flying easy either.
BRUCE: Pipes and I and the rest of our squadron have decided to head out to Florida early. We’re migrating early because of the fire. No point sticking around.
BIRGITA: Is the whole forest gone around us?
PIPER: No Birgita, it’s not that bad yet. We’ve seen much worse flying across the country. Forest fires can really devastate an area but this one isn’t that bad. Hopefully it’ll rain soon. That’s really the only thing that helps put these fires out.
KITTEN: Piper!! Bruce? Is that you?
PIPER: Hey Kitten! I was afraid we wouldn’t get a chance to say goodbye to you!
KITTEN: Goodbye? Isn’t it early to be migrating?
BRUCE: We’re heading out early because of the fire. Pipes wanted to swing by and say goodbye to you all though. Hopefully we’ll see you next year when we get back.
CLUCKY: Hey Kitten, did you find out if we’re evacuating yet?
KITTEN: No Clucky. Actually, I didn’t get too far. The winds are so strong it was difficult to get up the hill with all the debris coming down with the wind. Then I thought I heard Piper’s voice so it was actually much faster to come back down here. I’m glad I came back so I didn’t miss Piper and Bruce.
PIPER: Well we really should be heading out. We don’t want to fall too far behind our squadron, especially with the visibility being so bad. We just wanted to pop in and say goodbye and hope to see you in the spring! Stay safe my friends. We’ll miss you!
CLUCKY: Always a pleasure Piper. Bruce…. Keep Pipes safe ok? She’s my favorite Pelican.
BRUCE: For sure bro! You keep those hens safe! This fire and wind is getting messy so I hope you guys get out soon! Pipes, we good to rock n roll?
PIPER: Oh Clucky, you’re my favorite rooster you stay safe too!. Hens and Kitten, take care everyone!! Bye!!
BRUCE: Buh-bye Washington bros! (sfx flapping noises)
BRIDGET: Did he just call us bros?
CLUCKY: Bye Piper! Bye Bruce!
HENS: Goodbye! Cheerio! See you in the spring!
KITTEN: Have a safe trip to Florida!
CLUCKY: It’s always so nice to have a visit from Piper.
KITTEN: I’m getting more worried about this fire if Piper and Bruce are migrating early. Hrm, I think I hear the family coming down. Maybe they have news about evacuating!
BIRGITA: Well it’s about time. It seems like everyone is leaving except for us!
BELLA: Here they come! What’s that thing the Dad person is pushing? It’s got a wheel on the front of a big open container and maybe handles on the back?
BRIDGET: It's a wheelbarrow. They use it when they bring down the hay to change out the bedding in our coup. That's strange, it's empty. Why would they bring it down here without anything in it?
KITTEN: Maybe they are planning on loading something up? Like your food.
CLUCKY: Alright, we can’t leave that. Oh I hope they pack the mealworm treats too! All this evacuating talk has made me hungry.
BRIDGET: You are always hungry.
CLUCKY: True but treats make everything better!
MADDOX: Oh Kitten! There you are! I am so glad you are down here. I was so worried.
KITTEN: Meow!
MADDOX: Here let me get you off the coop. Wow you have stuff all over your fur. Is that from the wind?
KITTEN: Meow!
DAD: See nothing to worry about. Kitten is here and you can take her up to the house.
MOM: Why don’t you do that now so she won’t be in the way while we wrap up the chickens.
MADDOX: Ok Mom. Come on Kitten, let's go back up to the house and find Rosie.
XANDER: Hey Chickens, time to go. Come here Clucky, I need you to be a good leader and show the ladies what we need them to do.
CLUCKY: Bawk Bawk! Sir Cluckington reporting for duty!
XANDER: Good Job. Now I’m going to pick you up and tuck your wings down and your feet up.
Mom: Xander can you hold him out toward me? (plastic stretch)
CLUCKY: Bawk! What’s happening back there?
BIRGITA: It looks like she has some sort of clear plastic on a roll. Bawk
BELLA: Bawk, What are they doing?
BRIDGET: Bawk, It looks like they are wrapping Clucky up in it. It is going around his middle. It appears to be holding down his wings and feet. Almost like a spider wraps up a fly in its web. Bawk, bawk bawk.
BELLA: Why do you think they are doing that?
XANDER: You are doing a great job Clucky, Mom is almost done.
CLUCKY: It’s like a hug that does not stop. I like hugs but I'm not sure I like the fact I can only move my head and tail feathers. Bawk Bawk
MOM: Alright, I think that will do it.
XANDER: Looking good Clucky! Now I’m going to set you in the wheelbarrow. I left a few worms in there for you.
CLUCKY: Worms! Bawk! Oh, I can’t move my wings and legs but I can still stretch my neck to reach them. Yum!
DAD: Great one down, and 3 to go. Hey Ladies, can I pick one of you up?
BIRGITA: Oh me! He's very handsome don’t you think? Bawk
DAD: Got ya. You are Brigita. Your feathers are looking a little ruffled from the wind. We’ll get you out of it and safe in the car.
BIRGITA: Oh my, he has very strong hands! Bawk bawk
BRIDGET: Bawk, Really? Brigita, he is a human and we are being evacuated for a fire.
BIRGITA: Exactly! We must enjoy every moment we have. You never know where life will take you. Bawk!
MOM: Good Job Brigita, you are so calm. We were able to wrap you up so quick!
BIRGITA: Ladies, don’t make a fuss.
BRIDGET: Brawk, Lady
DAD: There you go next to Clucky.
BIRGITA: Oh Clucky, you left some worms for me!
CLUCKY: No I didn’t but my neck can only stretch so far.
XANDER: Come on Bella you are next.
BELLA: Bawk! Woah, not too fast.
MOM: (plastic noises) We are getting really quick at this. How are they doing over in the wheelbarrow? Are they able to move?
DAD: Nope, all good over here. This looks like it should hold them.
XANDER: All secure Bella, into the wheelbarrow with you.
BELLA: Oof. A little gentler please.
BIRGITA: Time is of the essence Bella. Can’t you see who worried the Mom and Dad person look?
DAD: Alright Bridget, you are the last one.
BRIDGET: Bawk, Last but not least. Oh Brigita you were right, he does have big strong hands.
XANDER: Mom, Dad, where are we going? We are about to leave and I just realized I have no idea where we are going. Is there a hotel that will let us bring the dog, cat, hamsters and chickens?
MOM: Ha! No, not that I know of. However, hotels in Florida did make exceptions for pets when we had to evacuate from a hurricane with the dogs a few years ago. However, we did not have the chickens or Kitten at that point.
XANDER: Are you saying that we don’t have anywhere to go? Will we be leaving in the car?
MOM: Not that’s not what I’m saying. (SFX: plastic noise) All set Bridget. You can put her with the others.
DAD: There you go, all cozy in the wheelbarrow. Let's head up. (walking sfx fade to lower)
MOM: We are going to your grandparents farm. They only live about 2 hours South. So we will be able to stay there for as long as we need to. Grandma is even clearing out a horse stall for the chickens to say in.
XANDER: Oh good, I did not want to sleep in the car.
(SFX: Alert Noise)
XANDER: What was that?
DAD: It’s the Alerts on our phones. They have upgraded our evacuation status from 2 to 3.
XANDER: What’s that mean again?
MOM: Leave now! Just in time, we’ve got everyone ready!
DAD: Let's Move!
