Season 4, Episode 10

Lemon-aide Escape

MADDOX

Oh it's such a beautiful spring afternoon

KITTEN

 Aaaa...chew.. meow

MADDOX

OH kitten, your spring allergies are starting. Don't worry I'll talk to mom she will get you your medicine from the vet. We don't want you getting bad like last year, when you could not stop scratching and tufts of fur came out.

KITTEN

 Meow (No)

RUBIX

squeak squeak

LAUGHING

Oh that’s right you have allergies! I remember when your fur was all patchy.

PAUSE

It was a good look for you.

KITTEN

Stop it Rubix! It's not nice to make fun of others.

RUBIX

I never claimed to be nice (squeak)

MADDOX

OH Rubix you are awake.? Would you like to go exploring the yard a little in your ball?

RUBIX

OH yes! (squeak) I have recently acquired a paper clip.. I will tuck it in my Cheek pouch and see if I can free myself from the ball. I've hidden it in my house.

(FLUFF RUSTLING)

MADDOX

OH you are going back in your house?Come on, it will be fun to go outside. How long has it been? I couldn't take you out in the snow and it's been too rainy this spring. This is the first really nice day.

(STX RUSSTHING)

OH you’re back! Can you understand me?

RUBIX

(squeak) Of course I am, it’s you who does not speak hamster. It would be so much easier for me to take over if you would just branch out and learn hamster.

MADDOX

Wow you are squeaking a lot. I've got your ball. I'll put your favorite seeds in and let you crawl in through your habitat. Oh Rubix, don't worry I won't try and pick you up. I know how you don't like to be touched.

KITTEN

I'm watching you Rubix. Just because Maddox cannot understand you, do not think you are fooling me. If you get out I'll pounce! (Achoo)

RUBIX

OH I'm so frightened of your fierce sneezing.

MADDOX

OH good job Rubix you went right in. Now

SFX-CLICK

Ok. I have the ball all secured.Do you have something in your cheek? It looks a little odd.

RUBIX

 (PLEH)

No, just some seeds.

(MUNCH MUNCH)

MADDOX

OH I see you brought some snacks with you. Kitten, do you want to come out with us or stay in? I don't want your allergies getting worse.

KITTEN

 meow

(HOP)

I'm coming I don’t trust Rubix.

 (MUSIC)

KITTEN

(Achoo)

CLUCKY

Hey Kitten, spring allergies back? What are you doing out here?

KITTEN

I'm keeping an eye on Rubix.

CLUCKY

She's just on the other side of the pond rolling in her ball.Seems like Maddox is pretty close. Are ya worried she is going to escape her ball?

KITTEN

Yes, she has a paper clip stashed in her cheek pouch. She thinks she can use that to get out of her ball.

BRIDGET

Who does she think she is? MacGyver?

KITTEN

 meow (ha!) right.

BELLA

Who is MacGyver?

CLUCKY

OH he was this super cool guy in a TV show. Haven’t you heard Xander talk about him. MacGyver is a top agent with the Phoenix Foundation, which works to right the wrongs of the world.

BRIGITTA

of course they would be called the Phoenix foundation. Birds are always on the lookout to right wrong.

CLUCKY

Yeah but the best part is that MacGyver never carries a gun. He thwarts the enemy

BELLA

Thwart?

CLUCKY

Brawk! Thwart! that's a funny word sounds like wart.

BELLA

But what does it mean?

CLUCKY

OH it means to prevent or stop someone.

BELLA

So this MacGyver guy stops the bad guys without a gun?

CLUCKY

Yeah he uses science and whatever he has in his pocket. Often times a paper clip or duct tape.

BELLA

Oh I get it now. That's why Bridget and Kitten were laughing about Rubix with a paper clip. Do you think she will be able to get out of her ball?

KITTEN

I don't know. (Achoo) that's why I am out here to keep an eye on her.

ROSIE:

Ruff Ruff! Hi everyone! It's so good to see you all back at the pond! There has been so much rain I've been in the house way too much. It’s nice to be able to run around in the yard again.

CLUCKY

Bawk! Rosie! Wow still so much energy!

ROSIE:

Hold that thought. I need to take a lap around the pond. I'll be right back.

BELLA

And there she goes. She is so fast for a little dog.

BRIDGET

Does she run around the house all day long too kitten?

KITTEN

(SNIFFS)

She's a lot more calm in the house. She follows the Mom person around most of the day, and she likes to take naps in sun spots like me.

CLUCKY

She naps? Hard to believe. Every time I see her she is darting from one place to another alway sniffing.

BRIGITTA

Look at her now. She is sniffing Rubix in her ball.

KITTEN

It looks like Rubix has tried to roll away from her and is slightly wedged under that large bush next to the pond.

(SHORT MUSIC TRANSITION)

ROSIE:

(SNIFFING)

OH so many smells! I just love spring. Don't you?

RUBIX

Go away.

ROSIE:

OH you are the testy little fur ball. Ha you are a fur ball in a ball!

RUBIX

(SCOFFS)

How are animals like you allowed to run free?

ROSIE:

(SNIFFS SOME MORE)

OOH, I just caught a new scent: Is there someone new back under this bush?

(GROWLS)

RUBIX

Stop your infernal sniffing.

ROSIE:

All sniffing is internal... how could I sniff outside? I breath in and bring the air and smells inside my nose.

RUBIX

Ugh! Infernal not internal! Infernal means irritating or tiresome. Which you are both!

ROSIE:

Ouch! How is it a nice girl like Maddox has such a grumpy hamster? Do you need a hug?

RUBIX

No, now go away!

ROSIE:

OH another new smell over there! Let me know if you change your mind on the hug. I can come down to Maddox’s room anytime for a visit.

RUBIX

I won't

ROSIE:

You won't let me know?

RUBIX

No, I won’t change my mind. I don't like to be touched. I certainly do not want a hug from the likes of you.

ROSIE:

The offer is always open. Be careful under this bush. It does not smell right.

RUBIX

I'll be fine. Go

[ROSIE SCAMPERS AWAY)

RUBIX

Nosy Rosie Ha! That rhymes! Maybe that is what I will start calling her. She won't like that.

(SNIFFS)

Hmm she is right. there is a strange smell under here.  Hello is someone else under this bush?

SHUFFLING SOUND

Pleh!  I am warning you, I am armed with a paperclip.  It is one of the most useful weapons known to humankind.  Maybe not as good as duct tape but it is sharper.

MAYBE CHING SFX

Plus I am also in this protective ball.  You will have a hard time getting to me.

LEMON:

NERVOUS LAUGH

Ha Ha Ha! I am not going to harm you.  I can’t believe you talked to that ferocious beast in such a manner.  You made it go away.

RUBIX:

Who? Rosie?  She is not a ferocious beast.  She is a dumb dog.

LEMON:

But she has all those teeth and she barks so loud.  There were creatures like that where I escaped from.  I lived in constant fear that they would tear me apart if I got out of my cage and they were around.

RUBIX:

Well that one is just a dumb dog.  She would not know what to do with a creature if she did catch one.  She’s just loud.  And she is always trying to impress the humans... so if she tried to eat me she would get in trouble and she knows it so she won’t try to eat me.  Who are you?  Why are you hiding under this bush?

LEMON

My name is Lemon and I am on the run.  I escaped from my cage and I’m never going back.

RUBIX

Escape you say? So you have experience... How did you do it?

CHING SFX AGAIN

I have this paperclip here and I am going to try and free myself from this infernal ball.

LEMON

It was not easy.  My captors had a very secure cage for me it was all metal and there was only 1 door in and out.  They only opened the door to feed me and take me out to brush and pluck me.

RUBIX:

Brush and pluck you? Why would they do that?  Come out from that dark burrow back there and let me see you.  What kind of creature are you that you can be plucked?

LEMON:

RUSTLING NOISES

I am an Angora rabbit.

RUBIX:

LAUGHING

Oh my!  Look at you! You are the fluffiest rabbit I have ever seen.  Even your ears have tufts of fur on them.  When you said you got plucked, I thought you were some sort of bird with exotic or very rare feathers.  They pluck your fur? Why?

LEMON:

The humans use it to make yarn. My fur is very soft. With the yarn they create a lot of  things like fancy soft sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves... All things humans seem to love.   Most humans don’t seem to have their own fur to keep themselves warm.

RUBIX:

You are right, most of them only have a patch of fun on top of their head!  So how often do they pluck you?

LEMON:

They take me out once a week to brush, pluck and remove any tangles from my fur.   Then once my fur starts to get really long,  about every 3 or 4 months, they come with scissors or a clipper and clip off all my beautiful fur!  They box it up and sell it!

RUBIX:

They clip off all your fur?!  The monsters!  I can see why you wanted to escape.  How did you manage it?

LEMON:

Well I knew it was getting close to the time where they were going to clip off my fur.  When the human who brushes came to get me, he was pulling me out of the cage and just as I got to the edge, I leapt at him and landed on his chest.   He started to stumble back in surprise and then I was able to jump from his chest to the top of his head.

RUBIX:

Why did you jump up and not to the ground?

LEMON:

I needed to get a better look around.  The barn where my cage was kept along with the other rabbits was very big.  I was not sure how to get out.

RUBIX:

How long did he let you perch on his head?

LEMON:

I only needed a few seconds.  As he stumbled around, I spotted a big barn door.  It was closed but I could see that the door did not reach all the way to the ground.  I leapt off his head and bolted for the door.

RUBIX:

Bolted?  You locked the door?  That does not make sense...

LEMON:

No! Bolted as in I ran really fast towards the door.

RUBIX:

Of course, I knew that.

LEMON:

I slipped under the door and made my escape!  I am never going back.

RUBIX:

Never?  What about all the other rabbits there?

LEMON:

Maybe they can learn from my example and escape as well.

RUBIX:

How many rabbits were there?  Maybe we could release them all and they could join my army!

LEMON:

We?  I just got out and now you are talking about going back?  What army?

RUBIX:

Oh, of course, I have not introduced myself I am Rubix Olivander Daniels, The Hamster of Doom!

SFX

LEMON:

Does that always happen?

RUBIX:

Yes, I have my own theme song.  Would you like to hear it?

LEMON:

Maybe another time.  Tell me about this army.

RUBIX:

Well it is what you call a work in progress.

LEMON:

Meaning it does not exist.

RUBIX:

Yet.  It does not exist yet.  I have plans! Big H.A.P.P.Y plans!

LEMON:

H.A.P.P.Y plans?  What does that mean?

RUBIX:

It’s an acronym, you know, an abbreviation where every letter represents a word.  In this case H-A-P-P-Y stands for Hamsters Annihilating Pathetic People..Yeees! What - ha -ha (Squeak, Squeak Squeak)

LEMON:

Oh that sounds like a good plan.  I like the acronym.  Happy.  It makes me happy to think about it.

RUBIX:

Me too!  So step one, I must make my escape.

LEMON::

(SKEPTICAL)

How is that going?

RUBIX:

Not bad since we have been talking. I have been working with this paperclip and have almost released the latch on my ball.  Step 2 is to recruit my army.  Step 3: Take over the world!

LEMON:

I like it!  How can I help?

GURGULING NOISE

SENSEI:

Thou doth speak of things thou shall not.  Humans give us food and care, thou shalt not plot against them.

LEMON:

Who are you and what in the world did you just say?

RUBIX:

I’ve heard of you. You are the fish Sensei Chew that lives in the pond and speaks like you swam out of a shakespearean play.

SENSEI:

Verily, my reputation proceedith me.

LEMON:

What?

RUBIX:

He said yes, you have heard of me.  Go away now.  We did not invite you to this conversation.

SENSEI:

Beware foul creature.  Ye shall not succeed.

RUBIX

SFX CLICK

.... And it’s open and I’m free!! Now I can further develop my H.A.P.P.Y plans and dominate the world! I must find a place to hide before they discover my escape.

PIPER

Oh no, here we go again, missed the pond! Incoming!! Arghhh…. Clear the way! Ooof! Oh no, what’s this I’ve got in my mouth??

CLUCKY

Piper?? Is that you?

PIPER

WITH SOMETHING IN HER MOUTH

Hold that thought Clucky. I seem to have scooped something up in my beak pouch.

RUBIX

(IN A MUFFLED TONE)

You idiotic bird! Get me out of here!

KITTEN

Oh Piper, that sounds like Rubix.

PIPER

Oh no, I’ll spit her out, whatever it is. Sorry!

KITTEN

No wait! She shouldn’t be out! She was in her ball thing but I see that it’s empty.

PIPER

Honk. So you want me to keep it in my mouth.

RUBIX

NO!! Let me out!

BELLA

Oh this is a problem.

MADDOX

What’s going on out here? Oh hello. A pelican? That’s strange. Oh no! Rubix’s ball is open. RUBIX!!

KITTEN

Meow. Spit her out now Piper.

PIPER

HONK….pleah.

RUBIX

I smell of fish. But free again… ha ha…. So long bird brains…I am off…..

MADDOX

OH there you are Rubix! Gotcha.

RUBIX

NOOOOOOO??? Foiled again!

MADDOX

Ouch, Rubix no need to be so angry. You’re extra feisty. We need to get you back in the ball or back inside in your cage. This is clearly not safe for you. How did you get out of the ball? It’s a good thing all these animals were here to keep you safe?

RUBIX

SAFE? NOOOO, they have spoiled my plans again!!!

MADDOX

Let’s just take you inside. Hey mom? Do you know anything about the pelican in our yard?

CLUCKY

Piper?? Is it really you?

PIPER

Embarrassingly yes Clucky. Still can’t make a decent landing without a larger pond. I’ve missed you all so much! Since we migrated early last year on account of that forest fire, it feels like forever since I’ve seen all of you. Are you all well? You look well.

KITTEN

It’s so good to see you again Piper.

BIRGITA

And where is that handsome fellow Bruce?

PIPER

Oh, Bruce and I are just friends. He was a bit older than me and looking for something more serious. He was always asking me to check out the nesting site he found and kept bringing me twigs and grasses and stuff but I wasn’t really interested. I’m not ready to settle down yet. There’s such a big world to explore out there!

CLUCKY

Piper, I know exactly what you mean! You should explore and have adventures. I wish I could go with you.

BRIDGET

Well you would make an interesting pair. Maybe Piper can carry you around in her pouch?

PIPER

That would be really awkward I think.

BRIDGET

Just kidding Piper.

PIPER

Oh… honk. (giggle) That’s funny Bridget.

BELLA

It would be really interesting to see the world from that perspective though.

PIPER
It is, but being in Washington is one of my favourite places and now I have all of you here too! Florida is getting more and more hurricanes. I forgot that the early fall can be so bad with hurricanes since we normally go closer to the winter. :

ROSIE:

BARKING AND RUNNING UP TO JOIN THE GROUP

Hurricane?  I thought we didn’t get those here?  Did this big bird get dropped in by a hurricane?  There are no clouds in the sky..

PIPER:

Honk!

FLAPPING

Wow you are sure full of questions!

CLUCKY:

Piper, this is Rosie she is a dog that lives in the house with the family.  She won’t hurt you even though her teeth and barks suggest otherwise.

PIPER:

Nice to meet you Rosie!

ROSIE:

You too!

GURGLING NOISE

SENSEI:

Hark there is danger afoot!

CLUCKY:

There is a dangerous foot? Where?

KITTEN:

No Clucky, Sensei means there is danger near. (Achoo)

ROSIE:

Where is the danger? I’m ready.

SENSEI:

Over yonder where the bush meets the pond.  I heard the Doom rodent speaking with another animal about plans most foul.

BELLA:

Kitten?

KITTEN:

Sensei heard Rubix talking to another animal under the bush and they were making plans that were bad.

ROSIE:

I was over by the bush and thought I smelled a new scent.  I’m going to go check it out!

RUNS OFF BARKING

PIPER:

Oh my!  She is quite a ball of fur and energy!

BRIGITTA:

She takes some getting used to but she always wants to protect the family.

BRIDGET:

Do you know what kind of animal Rubix was plotting with?

CLUCKY:

Potting?  They potting plants for a little garden under the bush?  Don’t plants need more light to grow? Doesn’t seem like under a bush is the best place to start a garden...

BRIDGET:

Plotting Clucky, not potting.  Plotting means to discuss evil plans.

SENSEI:

Verily, plans most foul indeed.  The knave, the Doom hamster twas colluding with twas an Angora rabbit by the name Lemon.  An ill tempered sort and master of escape.

CLUCKY:

Master of Escape!  I wonder that is how Rubix got out of her ball.  She had help from this escape master.  Oh here comes Rosie...

ROSIE:

RUNS BACK IN PANTING

I sniffed all around.  There is definitely a new scent.  I followed it until the little stream across the yard but then it got lost.

BRIGITTA:

Too bad.  I was hoping you would catch the fiend.

BRIDGET:

Wow, look at you. I think Sensei is rubbing off on you.

BRIGITTA:

I must say I do enjoy the way he speaks.

SENSEI:

Tis  most kind of thee madam.

KITTEN:

SNEEZES

Oh these darn allergies.  I am going to head back inside and see if I can get more information out of Rubix.

CLUCKY:

Good idea!  We will up our perimeter checks to 3 times a day.  Piper do you think you could lend us some air support and do a fly over of the area?

PIPER:

Absolutely. Anything for you Clucky!

ROSIE:

I’ll help too by alerting you if I catch the scent again.

CLUCKY:

Sounds great!  We will find this sour Lemon if he’s still in the area and keep our family safe.
