We Follow A Faint Trail Through Hoodoos To A 10-Foot Rock Throne

We hike New Mexico’s Valley of Dreams to hunt for hoodoos, petrified wood, and the famous Alien Throne hidden beyond a faint, unmarked path. Along the way, we spot the Three Wise Men formation, salt deposits by a rare bit of water, and a strange rock-walled structure on the hike out. 
• starting out near the Valley of Dreams and heading toward badlands formations 
• spotting petrified wood similar to species found in Arizona 
• climbing ridges for panoramic views and locating the Alien Throne 
• seeing the Three Wise Men rock pillars 
• noticing water in a gully and white salt deposits 
• exploring nearby hoodoos that look like mushrooms and animal faces 
• hiking back out and finding rock walls that might be a storehouse

Welcome To Valley Of Dreams

Hey there, this is Craig the Natural Medic, and I am in New Mexico, not too far from where I live. At the Valley of Dreams. I'm gonna go walk out here to see some cool Badlands and hoodoos. And hopefully the alien throne. And we got a pup today with our group. There she is. So follow me if you want to see some cool badlands and other formations.

Petrified Wood And First Hoodoos

Of course, in this area you do have some petrified wood. Not as much as you would see in petrified forest, but still similar species. About the same species as you find in petrified forest in Arizona. And they'll probably see some more of it as we make our way in. Alright, starting to see some formations as we get in here. And you've got a wide variety of things. Some pretty cool hoodoos right here. Some other areas in here.

Crossing Ridges Toward The Throne

This is the other side of the area we were looking at. Calling up on top of that ridge. That first basin. Pretty cool. Again, the alien throne that we're headed to. getting closer to those red mounds. Group in front of us is walking on the quote-unquote trail. It's not much of a trail here. Just kind of a well-worn path. Nothing is designated or marked per se. But you can kind of figure it out. So we're gonna keep going this way. Kind of surprising to see water out here, but there's a little bit of water in this gully. And all the little white spots, of course, is salt deposits. Alright. So we're over here. It's an interesting one right there. We got more interesting ones. Up ahead here. It looks like the valley opens up over here, so I'm thinking that's where the alien throne might be. We'll take

a look in a bit. What a great panoramic view. There's lots of cool hoodoos where you get on top here. And I thought this was the Alien Throne, maybe, but it's similar. It's not quite tall enough. It's supposed to be about 10 feet tall. Here

Finding The Alien Throne

it is. Over there. So let's go take a look at it. That one on the other side, kind of a miniature alien throne. Lots of really great hoodos over here in this area. But here is the alien throne itself. Isn't that cool? Super cool. Definitely looks like something alien for sure. Like aliens built it or put their king or deity or whoever on that. Very cool. And there's tons of little other hoodoos in the area as well. Took about an hour or so from where we parked. We kind of parked past the normal trailhead to get to this. And there it is. A little bit more of the Alien Throne here. And some other hoodoos that are nearby.

Shapes, Mushrooms, And Imagination

Some of them look like mushrooms. Kind of reminds me of Super Mario Land. I'm gonna try to go over here and check these out. Of course, the cool thing about looking at all these formations is that it's kind of open to the eye of the beholder. So this one kind of looks to me like a horse head or an alligator. Not really sure. But lots of cool, super neat formations. Very cool. So, again, like imagination. Cooks like scoops of ice cream or mushrooms. Alright, take a look this way. Just a cool view of everything. The alien throne is up there where that person is standing. I don't know if you can see that, but pretty cool. Just a lot of interesting formations in here to take a look at. Like a dinosaur face sticking up here.

Hiking Back And Spotting A Ruin

Alright, coming around the roundabout side. There's some more hoodoos over here. On the far side of that little bowl where the alien throne is. Walking back out. Pretty cool. Coming out of the basin where the Alien Throne is. This is just kind of the front side of it. We're gonna go back over this way. You can maybe see the cars on the horizon. That's where the main trailhead is. Alright, gonna try to go over this ridge here. Remember before the three wise men is located over here, and there's some more hoodoos that we kind of saw going around here. So we'll see if we can get through this little gap right here on the ridgetop. Looks pretty interesting. There's some kind of a ruin over here or some old house or something. I doubt it's ancient ruin. Let's take a look. Definitely got some rock walls here. I'm not sure what it is, but I'm thinking it's probably more of a maybe some kind of a storehouse. Or something like that, that's what I would think. But I'm not sure. What do you think? Alright, coming up on the end of the trip here.
