And a lot of that had to"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":246.96,"endTime":250.17,"body":"the fact that my parents, both"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":250.17,"endTime":253.53,"body":"of whom have scientific"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":250.17,"endTime":253.53,"body":"backgrounds. My dad was an"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":253.53,"endTime":256.95,"body":"engineer, before retiring, my"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":253.53,"endTime":256.95,"body":"mother was pre-med in"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":256.95,"endTime":260.85,"body":"university, went on to become a"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":256.95,"endTime":260.85,"body":"med tech because my grandfather"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":260.85,"endTime":263.19,"body":"unfortunately passed away, so"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":260.85,"endTime":263.19,"body":"they didn't have the funds to go"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":263.19,"endTime":265.77,"body":"to med school. But they both"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":263.19,"endTime":265.77,"body":"have science backgrounds, and"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":265.77,"endTime":269.07,"body":"they really wanted me to be a"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":265.77,"endTime":269.07,"body":"doctor, which I understand, you"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":269.07,"endTime":271.65,"body":"know, it's, of course, the Asian"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":269.07,"endTime":271.65,"body":"parents dream, \"Oh, my child's"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":271.65,"endTime":275.61,"body":"going to be a doctor.\""},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":271.65,"endTime":275.61,"body":"[Laughter] So they planted that"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":275.61,"endTime":279.57,"body":"seed into your head. And so for"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":275.61,"endTime":279.57,"body":"a very long time in my life, for"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":279.57,"endTime":282.84,"body":"much of my younger years, I"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":279.57,"endTime":282.84,"body":"thought it was, that was my"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":282.84,"endTime":287.16,"body":"path. But you know, I didn't"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":282.84,"endTime":287.16,"body":"really have much of a passion"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":287.16,"endTime":292.05,"body":"for it. And it wasn't until"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":287.16,"endTime":292.05,"body":"later that I was able to put a"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":292.05,"endTime":297.12,"body":"finger on what was my passion."},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":292.05,"endTime":297.12,"body":"You know, I did try to do my"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":297.12,"endTime":300.72,"body":"parents path right through to"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":297.12,"endTime":300.72,"body":"high school. But you know, I'll"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":300.72,"endTime":305.07,"body":"be honest, I was maybe at best a"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":300.72,"endTime":305.07,"body":"B plus student in math and"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":305.07,"endTime":308.07,"body":"science. And that was with a lot"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":305.07,"endTime":308.07,"body":"of effort. And I think a lot of"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":308.07,"endTime":311.07,"body":"that just, I think about that"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":308.07,"endTime":311.07,"body":"now. And I think, why, sure, I"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":311.07,"endTime":313.65,"body":"could have applied myself more."},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":311.07,"endTime":313.65,"body":"But again, it just wasn't my"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":313.65,"endTime":314.13,"body":"passion."},{"speaker":"Roberta Bondar","startTime":314.55,"endTime":315.45,"body":"So what"},{"speaker":"Roberta Bondar","startTime":314.55,"endTime":315.45,"body":"happened?"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":316.77,"endTime":320.97,"body":"Well, it was,"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":316.77,"endTime":320.97,"body":"you know, my amazing grandmother"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":321.0,"endTime":325.23,"body":"on my father's side. And my"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":321.0,"endTime":325.23,"body":"grandmother, you know, I have"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":325.23,"endTime":328.29,"body":"this recurring theme in my life"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":325.23,"endTime":328.29,"body":"of strong women, and my"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":328.29,"endTime":333.0,"body":"grandmother is certainly one of"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":328.29,"endTime":333.0,"body":"them. And she, just a bit of"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":333.0,"endTime":338.04,"body":"background on her, she, she, as"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":333.0,"endTime":338.04,"body":"a young teenager, fled the"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":338.04,"endTime":342.42,"body":"Japanese invasion of the"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":338.04,"endTime":342.42,"body":"Philippines. And so she, her"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":342.42,"endTime":346.5,"body":"father, my great grandfather,"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":342.42,"endTime":346.5,"body":"her mother and her sister, were"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":346.5,"endTime":352.38,"body":"fleeing. And in that flight, my"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":346.5,"endTime":352.38,"body":"great grandfather had a heart"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":352.38,"endTime":356.4,"body":"attack, and he passed away, her"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":352.38,"endTime":356.4,"body":"sister died of dysentery. And it"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":356.4,"endTime":362.31,"body":"was just her and her mother. And"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":356.4,"endTime":362.31,"body":"luckily, she met my grandfather,"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":363.09,"endTime":368.43,"body":"who was a doctor outside of"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":363.09,"endTime":368.43,"body":"Manila, and her mother had"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":368.43,"endTime":373.5,"body":"health issues. And at that"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":368.43,"endTime":373.5,"body":"point, all these women, young"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":373.5,"endTime":376.59,"body":"girls who are unmarried, were"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":373.5,"endTime":376.59,"body":"being taken to become, you know,"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":376.59,"endTime":380.25,"body":"the euphemism \"comfort women\""},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":376.59,"endTime":380.25,"body":"into these rape houses in the"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":380.25,"endTime":382.77,"body":"Philippines for Japanese"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":380.25,"endTime":382.77,"body":"soldiers. So my grandfather,"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":383.07,"endTime":386.73,"body":"married my grandmother. So she"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":383.07,"endTime":386.73,"body":"kind of always had this inner"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":386.73,"endTime":390.51,"body":"strength. And then she, later in"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":386.73,"endTime":390.51,"body":"life went to the United States"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":390.51,"endTime":394.74,"body":"where she became a practical"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":390.51,"endTime":394.74,"body":"nurse. So she never stopped"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":394.8,"endTime":397.56,"body":"pursuing her dreams. And, and,"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":394.8,"endTime":397.56,"body":"and aside, she was actually a"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":397.56,"endTime":401.34,"body":"movie star in the Philippines"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":397.56,"endTime":401.34,"body":"for a time as well. So she had"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":401.34,"endTime":404.16,"body":"this amazing life. And she came"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":401.34,"endTime":404.16,"body":"up from Texas, because that's"},{"speaker":"Michael Serapio","startTime":404.16,"endTime":408.96,"body":"where she ended up settling.
