Speaker 1:

All right, y'all, welcome back to another episode of the Peace and Prosperity Podcast. I'm your host, jason Phillips, licensed therapist, confidence expert, and we are getting into the conversation today around how to stay disciplined even when you don't want to. I know sometimes it's hard, though, like you, you want to stay focused, you want to stay on track, but then you have little different distractions and sometimes these are legit distractions. I get it. Things happen, things come up and it throws you off, but then other times you may feel like this is a pattern, like everything that I'm saying I want to do, I'll start it, but I won't finish it. Or sometimes you don't even start it because you don't feel like you can finish it. That's a whole, nother problem, but today we're going to unpack how do you truly stay disciplined and what that looks like. Yeah, I got my notes today, so we're going to get really get into it. So the first thing that you have to do when it comes to staying disciplined Well, let me back up the very first thing that you have to do is acknowledge. I'm not going to say accept, I'm just going to say acknowledge, acknowledge that what you are doing is not working and this is throwing your discipline all the way off is not working, and this is throwing your discipline all the way off. So you're saying you want to be disciplined, but your actions and your behavior are not lining up so that you can truly look like and play out disciplined behaviors. I don't know, I guess it is disciplined behaviors, but you got to say it's not working. Whatever you're doing, it's not so what do you do? But you got to say it's not working Whatever you're doing, it's not so what do you do? The first thing I want you to do you have to envision yourself being disciplined.

Speaker 1:

I know I talk about mindset, but it also I talk about vision too. You want to be able to see yourself as being the the focused locked in person that you want to be. Nobody can do that for you but you. This is where the belief comes into the action. See, when you combine what you believe about yourself to how you're showing up, so meaning what you want for yourself, you speak it and then you see it. That's when you're going to get disciplined. And it's not going to happen like overnight, where you just wake up and say, man, I'm going to be disciplined today, but it's going to be through a small series of incremental behaviors, so like you'll be disciplined in one area or you'll do one thing differently and then the next thing you know you're going to be like man. I'm actually visualizing myself doing the things that I said I want to do and it's happening in real time Y'all. When this starts to happen, it's a game changer.

Speaker 1:

When you think about going to the gym, I love using the gym as examples because it's something that I can personally relate to. When I say I want to lift a certain amount of weight or I want to run a certain amount of miles or for a certain amount of time, before I do it I have to see myself in that mode, meaning I have to envision myself completing running 20 minutes, 30 minutes I don't typically run farther than that, so I'm not even going to say and lie like, yeah, I do 45 minutes or an hour, but whatever goal that I set, I see myself accomplishing that thing. Now, sometimes that's tough because we get distracted or we can kind of talk ourselves out of it. So this is where you may see people putting the towel over the treadmill or the elliptical machine. So they're not looking at the time, they're not focused on it.

Speaker 1:

Hey, if it works, it works. I'm not knocking it, but what I am saying is you want to see yourself already, that healed version of you, that disciplined, locked in person If you want more prosperity and peace in your life. I want you to see it before you can actually feel it, but you got to believe it. That's the first thing. Hey, peace and Prosperity, family. I want to take a moment to talk about something vital for all organizations employee wellness. Here's what some of the past organizations have shared about their experiences.

Speaker 2:

So far, I've learned that my mental health has a huge impact as a leader on my team's health, but also to be looking out for signs that I've already been seeing and learning tips on how I can take those back to help myself as well as my team.

Speaker 3:

So I really appreciate Jason because he really put a lot of stuff in perspective for me. I don't get a lot of days off you know what I'm saying so when I do take one off, I feel really, really guilty. It's like, oh my gosh, I got so much to do, but knowing that like, hey, it's okay, take a break, be yourself and then come back to this and you'll be better. It's just, it's nice to keep hearing that.

Speaker 2:

So that's good, but it was good to reevaluate and see that you know everyone has burnout, things like that and also just learning how to deal with it more effectively. Be yourself, love yourself, and other people are going to love you too. Like regardless. And workplace is not just workplace, this is family. He was a great speaker, yeah, probably one of the best ones that I've seen so far.

Speaker 1:

Now back to the episode. The second thing I want you to do so that you can stay disciplined, even when it's hard, is set the smaller goals. This is where those incremental steps come in. If you're finding yourself getting off track, that's probably because you have the lofty goals. I'm not saying they're easy, but you have the big, lofty goals. And now you're like but how do I do it? I know what I want, I can see it, but how do I get there?

Speaker 1:

You've probably let yourself down on more than one occasion by saying you were going to do something and life getting in the way and you did not follow through. So to avoid that, I want you to say what you're going to do, but I want you to break it down, so step by step. For instance, if you want to let's say you want to purchase a home Now purchasing a home can seem like a really big thing to do, but let's break it down. Get your credit right, have the down payment First, have a realtor, know where you want to move. You see how all of those steps, that's like four or five steps right there, and you can break those down even smaller. So what happens to your confidence is, each time you hit that step, you're like, okay, I'm flexing a little bit because you can feel yourself getting closer to the goal. And then the goal goes higher and higher and higher and before you know it, you look up, you're in your new house. But it does not happen overnight. It happens with you strategically putting yourself in position so that you can be disciplined and be focused even when you didn't think you could be. That's why smaller goals are key, not saying you shouldn't have big ones or bigger goals, but you want to have the smaller, step-by-step goals too.

Speaker 1:

The next one this is where I think a lot of us we shy away from. To stay disciplined, I want you to do two. It's two words be vocal or, let me switch it up, be vocal accountability partner. Either of those you're going to win, because the more vocal you can be and the more accountable people can keep you. It's going to help you be disciplined even when you don't feel like it.

Speaker 1:

See, at times it's hard to continue talking about something that you want and desire. So now you're sharing it, you're being honest and truthful, and then you have an accountability partner to hold you accountable. It's going to help you get there when normally, if it's just you. You're keeping something to yourself. You can get off track. That's the beauty of writing your goals down. That's the beauty of saying your goals out loud, because now you've actually I won't say manifested it, but you're putting it out there in the universe and you're attracting it. See, when it's in here, it is just only in your mind.

Speaker 1:

As soon as you talk yourself into doing something or into staying focused, you can quickly talk yourself out of being focused too. But I want you to be vocal. Share with somebody. Share with somebody too. Let's be strategic about this. I don't want you just sharing it with anybody. Somebody. Share it with somebody too. Let's be strategic about this. I don't want you just sharing it with anybody. I want you sharing your goals with somebody that's going to hold you, like hold your feet to the fire, who's going to make sure they check in with you. You check in with them. That's the type of person that you want. That's like a, I guess, a cheat code to being focused that you have the right persons or people around you. But y'all be vocal and have an accountability partner. So let's recap, because I really want you to get this discipline and be and stay disciplined even when you don't feel like it. Number one is it's going to be imperative, you have to see yourself winning. Number two it's going to be equally as imperative I want you to set smaller goals. And then number three you have to be vocal in a cheat code is having an accountability partner. Yeah, we had to go there. If you struggle with discipline, I believe I really do believe that if you apply these principles, you're going to see yourself winning quicker, faster and stand on track longer.
