Speaker 1:

And in terms of developing skills, what are your thoughts on the role of swing mechanics, the use of swing mechanics, the transition to playing a little bit more automatically? What thoughts do you have in that area?

Speaker 2:

I've been fortunate to have worked with some very good swing instructors over the years and to have done lessons together, and I absolutely think you've got to take advantage of the technology that we have, and I think the best instructors are the ones that are able to take the data and explain it in a way that's simple and allows the student to really embrace what they're saying and practice that way. And when we work together, we talk a lot about feel. So the instructor will give some instruction on technique and where your body needs to be and all that stuff that I get scared sometimes talking about. But in between I'll have the student pause and ask them where in your body do you feel where you are? And people always say well, I have trouble taking what I'm learning in the lessons in the golf course because we're going to get too technical on the golf course and positions. Well, now if you have a feel to fall back on right. So if you get in the club top of your backswing in a certain position that you're working on, where do you feel that? Do you feel that in your glutes? Do you feel it in your hip? Do you feel it in your side? Wherever it may be. Take that with you to the golf course, recreate that feel, and it'll help a little bit.

Speaker 2:

We're not so consumed with technique and positions and stuff, because it can be very difficult. I think because we have so much information now it can be challenging to a first student. So really simplifying, I guess, is the best message, the best you can in those situations can be really helpful. But I'm a golf nerd and junkie myself. I'm obsessed with that stuff as a fan of golf and as a player and I really enjoy that piece. But you have to know yourself. You have to know. I think it's so important, just like in our work, to have a really good relationship with a coach where you trust them and the coach understands you to the point where he knows exactly how you're going to interpret the information he gives you. And I think that's the most important piece for anyone looking for a coach. That's the most important piece in that relationship. These coaches are all fantastic, they all know what they're doing, but find someone that you trust and that trusts you and that you're able to communicate with. I think it's as good as you can do.
