There's so much heartache in this text. So much heartache, and so much grace. Give it a read through in John 21:15-25. You can see it in the fire reflected in Peter's eyes. Peter stood on the bank of the Sea of Galilee. I imagine that if you looked at him, you could see in his eyes that he was a million miles away- staring into a different fire on a different day- the fire where he had denied Jesus three times. There was so much heartache in Peter, and the way he had abandoned his Savior.

Jesus knew this. He pressed into the heartache. Just like Peter had denied him 3 times, he asked Peter three times: "Do you love me?" And Peter said: "You know I love you." And three times, Jesus commissioned Peter- "Feed my sheep."

Three times Jesus really was telling Peter- I know what you did, and I forgive you. Now come in with me to the mission closest to my heart.

There's so much heartache here, and so much grace. No matter WHAT it is, Jesus' forgiveness and commissioning of Peter shows us that you are forgiven, and you are given life and purpose. This is for you. This is the fire of the risen Christ.
