Show Notes

John Koufos has had a wild ride: rising star criminal defense lawyer, incarcerated in Bayside State Prison for 17 months, and now advisor to Presidents and Governors on Access to Justice initiatives, inmate re-entry, and a ton of Bi-partisan policy initiatives. Listen to the narrative that put John behind bars and has made him a zealous advocate for those emerging from prison.

He is the National Director of Right on Crime - a think tank that utilizes unique approaches to facilitate inmate re-entry to the community.  Right on Crime  focuses on common sense initiatives like identification, driver's licenses, wiping out small fines, and leaving a pathway to “Safe Streets.”

When John was released from Bayside State Prison, he connected with former Gov. James McGreevy and his prison ministry initiative. Before long he was the leader of the New Jersey Re-entry Corporation (NJRC) and now travels the country talking common sense reform and access to justice.

His “big ask” of lawyers is to get involved in their state’s re-entry programs. He gives Honorable Mentions to several people, including:

  •     Jared Kushner, Senior Advisor to the President, and his advocacy of the First Step    Initiative
  •     Chris Stock, CEO at Leap Legal
  •     Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie
  •     Former law partner, Veronica Noorgard, of the Weinberger Law Group
  •     The judge he clerked for, Retired Judge Edward Oles
  •     As well as multiple trips to the White House and Capitol Hill unifying elected officials,   including Sen. Cory Booker and Sen. Dick Durbin, on initiatives signed by Pres. Trump
