It has n- and I've always lived in the kind of the same area on the west side, so I'm near the beach. It's always cooler where I live than anywhere else in Los Angeles.

[00:02:54] Carmen: It just is. It's always a little bit cooler. And I'm telling you, this, first of all, it's usually two weeks where we have this, what

[00:03:31] Carmen: I'm just saying usually there's two weeks out of the year where I'm really hot here on the west side. Like hot that you can't sleep or that you have to leave the windows open. It's still not even cooling down enough.

[00:03:42] Carmen: But this has been going on for too long. I don't know how people don't know about environmental issues and climate change. I don't get it

[00:03:50] Andrea: Well, it's been particularly humid here also, which is

[00:03:56] Andrea: We don't do humid over here. It's a dry heat, and that's the way we like it.

[00:04:01] Carmen: Yes. And that's not been what's happening

[00:04:04] Andrea: yeah. Like it actually rained here yesterday, like a hot summer rain

[00:04:08] Carmen: It was unbelievable. I was actually in Hollywood at my client's home, and as we were leaving, there was like a downpour of rain, and we're like, "What? But the sun was shining." That was kind of cool and yet not.

[00:04:22] Andrea: it's-- it was very, like, East Coast vibes. I was like, "Okay, are we gonna get lightning bugs now too? Like, what's happening?" Um, but overall, yeah, don't like it. I will say though, like, it's, it's always hot up here. I mean, it's definitely been over 100 most days, but, like, it hasn't felt as hot. Like, a lot of times we will have days that are over 110, like multiple days, and we haven't had that.

[00:04:49] Andrea: But we've had, like, 100 degrees and humid, which fuck that.

[00:04:57] Carmen: just looking... I'm sorry, I'm gonna delete this part. I just am looking at, um, the settings here for your sound 'cause I'm wondering if it's on my end. I have all these options.

[00:06:34] Carmen: You know what? I'm, it's a, yeah, it's a bad time. Okay, anyways, let's talk about other stuff. Okay, first I, I wasn't gonna talk about this, but I do, I do wanna point it out. So Donald Trump, like other presidents in the past, have, um, right? There's always some type of assassination attempt or whatever.

[00:06:53] Carmen: Donald Trump likes to act that he's the only one who's ever experienced such a thing. You know what I mean? He's so weird. He's so stupid. It drives me insane. His ego is ridiculous. But anyways, look it, the memes write themselves, right? Because he was hidden in some catering truck something. Of course, the memes all over social media, I've been, like, dying 'cause they've been kinda funny.

[00:07:20] Carmen: They hid him, like he pretended to go into the plane,

[00:07:24] Andrea: Well, he did go into the plane, 

[00:07:25] Carmen: Oh, yeah 

[00:07:26] Andrea: he went off in the catering truck

[00:07:29] Carmen: in the catering truck, and he only took certain people with him. He left other people behind, and he left all the press, which, blessings. Like, blessings. I mean, not about the press, but like fucking, what's his name? That asshole, I can't stand him. Miller. Stephen Miller was left behind.

[00:07:47] Andrea: Oh, no way. Really?

[00:07:48] Carmen: Yeah. I was like, 

[00:07:49] Andrea: That's fucking funny.

[00:07:50] Carmen: that's awesome.

[00:07:51] Carmen: but the press... Anyway, h- here's what I wanna say. All presidents, all leaders of countries, by the way, are threatened all the time, right? And that's why we have Secret Service, and that's why we do our due diligence, and blah, blah, blah. The difference with this situation is how he lied to the press.

[00:08:09] Carmen: I know why you're laughing. I, I just... How do people not realize he's a horrible person? I don't get it.I don't know if you had any feelings about that. I just, it's another piece of evidence. You know, there used to be this ability that you would, you would be able to tell the press things 'cause they're on the plane with him.

[00:08:27] Carmen: They follow him to give us information in the country of what's going on whenever he's traveling or whatever. So it's the press pool that travels with him. And so they had a real threat, and that's what Secret Service does. They protect the president above all else. And I, I guess when you take a job with the president, any president, you know that you're not gonna be worried about at all.

[00:08:54] Carmen: And they diverted the plane, right? They used them as like, what is the word? I don't know what the right word

[00:08:59] Andrea: Decoy

[00:09:00] Carmen: Decoy. They used the presidential plane as a decoy while he turned around and was in another plane, right, to get back. But when they landed, the press had questions, and he kinda just denied it or whatever, and he never told them what was going on.

[00:09:18] Carmen: That's lame. And in the past, presidents have told them, and they know off the record. They know how to protect the president as well, but you don't turn around and use people that way. I don't know. I don't know what your feelings are on it, but I thought we would just mention it 'cause it's all over social media, and it's hilarious

[00:09:34] Andrea: story is a shit show from beginning to end, right? When it first happened, it was like, okay, this is the plane that he got, he... as a gift, right? From whoever, I can't even remember now. Qatar, right? and then taxpayer money was spent to, you know, trick it all out, but n- not enough apparently, because it wasn't secure.

[00:09:55] Andrea: So he left everybody on that plane, snuck out with the fucking burgers and fries, and went on another plane, left them with the credible threat essentially against you know, with his closest advisors, who didn't include people like his secretary of state and, you know, the little Nazi. Um,

[00:10:18] Carmen: That's what we're gonna call him.

[00:10:19] Andrea: yeah, I mean, like...

[00:10:21] Andrea: A- and then lied about it, you know. And he's, uh, he's just He's just such a small, small person

[00:10:31] Carmen: He really is, right? And even watching that, like, and, and it's the ease of the lie. It's the, it's the how he so... Like, he didn't have to say anything. He was... He could've just said, "We don't discuss issues like that. Let's move on to the

[00:10:46] Andrea: As all other presidents have, it's called the Secret Service for a reason, because we don't fucking tell you every single threat that's happening. We just take care of it

[00:10:55] Carmen: Right. But he's like, "Woe, woe is me. I mean, I have the hardest job in the world. I mean, people are always going after me. I mean,

[00:11:02] Andrea: "There was a credible threat against my plane." Well, I wonder why. You fucking just started a war of choice in the Middle East.

[00:11:08] Carmen: That's right. 

[00:11:08] Andrea: don't be a dipshit.

[00:11:10] Carmen: Yeah, I know. Anyways, it was kinda depressing, but I thought I would mention it 'cause it's all over social media, and it's, uh, another piece of evidence as to why this man... You know, there's all this conversation about what a real man is. When I tell you that Donald Trump is the epitome of not what a real man is, I'm not lying.

[00:11:31] Carmen: Like, there's nothing about him that's actually what... Like, if you have to keep projecting that you're great or that you're wonderful, and you're putting all these AI-generated pictures of yourself with... Have you s- You don't even have to see them. I'm not even... And like he's a, like he's a general with all the medals, and

[00:11:51] Andrea: Right, the giraffe dodger.

[00:11:53] Carmen: Oh my God, the... Right, the person who had, what was it? Bone spurs. I don't even know what the hell that is. That is totally made up. It has to be. I don't know. But it just, it's a weird, it's a weird, horrible little man 

[00:12:06] Andrea: all have experienced, this is a, this is a, a universal human experience. That person who just like talks themselves up a little too much and everybody around is like, "Oh my God, this fucking guy again." You know? Like we all know what that feels like, and this like, this person is our fucking president.

[00:12:28] Carmen: Yeah. Well, whatever. I, yeah. Okay, so the other thing I wanted to mention, I know I didn't tell you any of this, I just, um, I just thought this was interesting. Um, you know, right now the names out there are May- Mayor Mamdani in New York, and Dr. Abdul El-Sayed. Um, where is he? Michigan? Michigan. Michigan. Uh, and it's so funny, somebody reminded me that Dr.

[00:12:55] Carmen: Oz is also Muslim. I forgot that, and I just wanted to make sure people listening to this podcast realize not a peep about Dr. Oz being Muslim. I wonder why. But the two browner looking men I'm just throwing that out there,

[00:13:13] Carmen: who don't support Trump and also g- doesn't really, I guess, look the part. I don't know what it is, but if you're confused by what racism is, I'm just letting you know, there you go, it's right there.

[00:13:26] Carmen: Um, yeah. All right. What was the first time you realized what politics was? I thought I would... I couldn't remember when... When did you get involved in politics? 'Cause I think you were a kid. I was not

[00:13:42] Andrea: I would say it was, uh, like the ironically, uh, the Iran hostas- hostage situation in

[00:13:54] Carmen: Carter and Reagan, 

[00:13:56] Andrea: that was like '79, '80, like during that election and,

[00:14:00] Carmen: I don't know. I wasn't even born then, but I can only imagine. No, I'm just kidding. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah

[00:14:06] Andrea: I remember really specif- I mean, I was 10, so like I remember really specifically Iran releasing the hostages on Ronald Reagan's inauguration day. And, uh, like I truly, like I was watching the news. I mean, I don't know who it was. I don't think Peter Jennings was on yet, but it was whoever, right? And, and I just remember thinking like, "That's interesting" that they would do that on this day.

[00:14:42] Andrea: Um, and somewhere along the lines, probably not then, but you know, somewhere, uh, I heard or read that there was maybe like a secret deal that was made with Reagan and, you know, those folks, and they obviously were really pissed at Carter because of the rescue attempt, and I don't even, I don't actually even know what led up to it all

[00:15:02] Andrea: still.

[00:15:03] Andrea: But, but so that was kinda like my first like, "Oh, shit's going down."

[00:15:09] Carmen: And, and here's the thing, the vibe from what I... I, I don't remember that time. This is me learning history after the fact. But, uh, it was like Carter did all the work, and then Reagan got all the credit, right? It was kind of that weird thing. And then, w- uh, President Carter lost the re-election because of that, right?

[00:15:31] Carmen: And Reagan was elected and, and it was like a weird thing because he got all that credit, which was, you know,

[00:15:38] Andrea: Well, I also think that the, uh, you know, Iranians were, they didn't want to... Like, they were mad at Carter. Again, I don't know the whole thing, so like they, you know, whatever work he did or they did, you know, his administration did to try to, you know, uh, get the hostages released, I don't, you know, it was kind of similar.

[00:15:57] Andrea: People were comparing it to what the Iranians said, uh, just earlier this week, where they're like, "We're just not even gonna talk to him anymore. We'll check in with what's in '28," right? So it was similar to that where it's like, "We don't like you, we're not gonna deal with you."

[00:16:12] Carmen: Which is what Iran just said, right, this week. They're, they're basically saying, "F you, Trump, and we're going to just wait until your next election and deal with hopefully a sane human being." That's all. People, get out and vote. People, please make sure... I'm

[00:16:30] Andrea: even then it's gonna be, you know, I mean, in

[00:16:32] Carmen: gonna list at the bottom, uh, where you can check.

[00:16:35] Carmen: It's not blue, it's not red, where you can check your registration, make sure that you vote in November. What? I missed what you just said. I'm

[00:16:43] Andrea: I was just saying, um, even if there is a sane person who comes in in '28, like it's, you know, this whole situation that he's blown up over there literally and figuratively, um, you know, they're not gonna trust someone,

[00:16:58] Andrea: so 

[00:16:58] Carmen: what? I think, I mean, I don't know if you've seen the incredible, incredible AI videos that Iran has, like within three minutes of Trump doing anything, has put out there. They are the Legos. 

[00:17:10] Andrea: Yeah

[00:17:10] Carmen: Hilarious. Hilarious. Um, they are, they're hilarious. I, I feel as if the Iranians are actually, I can't believe I'm gonna say this, are actually willing to deal with a sane person, even if we...

[00:17:26] Carmen: You know what I mean? Like, they just think he's a joke, you know what I mean? They think... And he, he just g- goes back and forth. Like, I think they'd be willing to... It doesn't mean they're gonna do it in our favor, but like there's an honest... It's kind of like gang members when I was growing up. There was a, there was the, right?

[00:17:42] Carmen: There was a camaraderie. There was a, we, th- there was a sort of

[00:17:47] Andrea: We understand each other, 

[00:17:49] Carmen: Yeah, like we hate each other, but we're gonna be honest brokers in this conversation because there were certain rules that gangs believe in. You know what I mean? Like, it's that kind of thing. And, and I feel like that's why they're kind of like, "Yeah, I want nothing to do with this man no more."

[00:18:07] Carmen: And I ain't mad at them for it You know, we've won the war five times in the past week already. You know what

[00:18:14] Andrea: Yeah, I mean, imagine trying to get anything done with this guy. Like, you know, one minute it's this, the next minute it's that. Like, I, I would've walked away before this.

[00:18:24] Carmen: Well, his press secretary, I think yesterday or the day before, actually said at the podium that President Trump's priority is the ballroom. I can't even believe those words came out of her mouth, but they did. They came out of her mouth that that's his priority when people are... You know, it's not even that people are suffering.

[00:18:42] Carmen: It doesn't matter. Doesn't matter. There is never a time that the President of the United States first priority should be a ballroom. I don't care what president it is

[00:18:51] Andrea: Oh, it's 'cause she's probably trying to make a bunker so he never has to leave. You know what I mean? Like, it's

[00:18:56] Carmen: gonna leave. Baby, he gonna leave. You know what? It, people are tired. People are tired. He, he gonna leave. Whether he thinks he's not gonna leave or not, even I'm like, "Dude, let it go." So the first time I even realized there was something to do outside of my little neighborhood, you know what I mean?

[00:19:18] Carmen: That, that the world was affected, was, um, when the Challenger crashed. and I remember I was on a bus,

[00:19:26] Andrea: Yep. Yep

[00:19:27] Carmen: I was on a bus going to downtown, and the bus driver stopped 'cause they had the radio on or whatever, and we all got out 'cause we were shocked. And like, we're-- I remember looking out, like you couldn't see anything.

[00:19:40] Carmen: You know what I mean?

[00:19:41] Andrea: You're like, "Where are they?"

[00:19:44] Carmen: But it was, because it was such a big deal. And so like, but the, I remember the bus driver had the radio on and, and stopped the bus and everybody kinda got out, and it was a weird moment, um, of like shock. And I was like... 'Cause I knew about it, but I didn't understand it, and I think Reagan had come out and said so, of course, you know what I mean?

[00:20:05] Carmen: But I don't know if it was that moment, but then I remember being all up in it, like, "And who is this guy?" Or whatever. And I don't know when that was, I forget, but I'm sure it was later

[00:20:14] Andrea: remember exactly when it was 'cause it was on my brother's birthday. Uh, it was January 28th, 1986.

[00:20:21] Carmen: Yeah, so much later than you. Yeah, yeah. So yeah. Um, but I, yeah, that's when I first started understanding and, um, and the weird thing is, is after that is when I learned about, uh, trickle-down economics, and I was like... No, but I was like, "You know what? That sounds interesting, trickle-down economics." And it sounds so good. And for those people who don't know what it is, the, you know, the, the, the basic idea is if you give me all the money, I will then give it to everyone

[00:20:56] Andrea: Me as an already wealthy

[00:20:58] Andrea: person, I will create jobs

[00:21:02] Carmen: Right. I will help the poor

[00:21:04] Andrea: and, and all-- yeah, I will help the poor because we've cut back on all the social services and things like that that the, that the government offers. So if you give it to me

[00:21:14] Carmen: To me

[00:21:15] Andrea: as a business owner, a corporation, a wealthy person, I will spread it out and

[00:21:20] Andrea: it will trickle down 

[00:21:22] Carmen: down to the 

[00:21:23] Andrea: the masses.

[00:21:25] Carmen: It'll trickle down to the minions.

[00:21:27] Andrea: It's still trickling, okay? Still trickling

[00:21:29] Carmen: It'll trickle, yeah, trickle, trickle, bitch, right? It's like... But I remember, and I was like, "This sounds... It doesn't, I don't think that's gonna work." I remember, but not understanding. And then I was like, the reason why it's not gonna work and why it never, never works is because people keep the money and give it to themselves with golden parachutes and to their shareholders, and they don't trickle it down to anyone.

[00:21:55] Carmen: And that has been factual over time. Like, Republicans keep holding onto that Reagan crap, and it's wrong

[00:22:02] Andrea: Where we are today is a direct, like a straight line

[00:22:08] Carmen: Yeah,

[00:22:09] Andrea: from trickle down because w- we, we now have it s- all of the wealth really in the world so hoarded

[00:22:18] Carmen: Ja

[00:22:19] Andrea: with, with so few people, nothing is trickling down and literally everyone is struggling except for, you know, like,

[00:22:28] Carmen: Jeff Bezos,

[00:22:29] Andrea: yeah, like 100 people or

[00:22:31] Carmen: Wait, here's the thing. The way it would work, like if, if it was a real thing, like, because it's thinking like you are a good, wholesome person and that you'll do the right thing. Amazon or Walmart, Walmart's in the news this week big time, but anyways, both of these, they would be paying their people so much money per hour that they wouldn't need SNAP benefits or welfare or, you know, whatever supplemental income

[00:22:56] Andrea: You wouldn't even need a minimum wage because they would automatically be paying people a living wage

[00:23:03] Carmen: They would be trickling down their wealth and helping people, you know? But yeah, so straight line from Reagan to today and yeah, but that's when I first learned about, um, it was the Challenger and,

[00:23:17] Andrea: Well, tell, like what, when you say that you first learned about politics from "The Challenger," like say more about that. Like what, what did you learn?

[00:23:26] Carmen: um, because I think when you grow up the way that I did, and I know you and I have similar backgrounds, but different coasts and it, it's different. Like, poverty is the baseline, but it's different, right? But you're in survival mode, and all that you're worried about is your neighborhood or where you're gonna sleep or where you're gonna eat.

[00:23:46] Carmen: Like, I wasn't concerned about the world around me. I didn't understand that anything happening outside of my neighborhood or me da- 'cause remember, I was dancing back then too, right? And I was in color guard and drum corps, and I was always just in this survival mode. It was all about what was happening in my small community.

[00:24:04] Carmen: I think what happened with the Challenger is that I started listening, and, and I realized how it affected us, like these strangers on the bus. Not really strangers, 'cause when you take the bus all the time or whatever, you know them. But w- I was in a different area, and when we, the bus driver stopped and we got out of the bus, it was like you realize there was something bigger than you.

[00:24:23] Carmen: And then I was listening to Reagan, the President of the United States, speaking, and I was listening. And lookit, we can... You and I agree on Reagan. There's not gonna be a question or a fight here about Reagan. But Reagan was, you know, he did have that twinkle in the eye. He was an actor. He did have... He was what?

[00:24:44] Andrea: Grandpa

[00:24:45] Carmen: Yeah, he was totally, like, um, somebody you wanted to listen to, you know what I mean? So I think that's what it was, and then I was like, "Oh, the president. Okay, what is the president? What is the..." Yeah, you know what I mean? It was like, "What's the vice president?" And that's how I kind of, uh, started getting involved in politics or understanding what it was. Yeah. Does that make sense?

[00:25:07] Carmen: Yeah. And, and don't get me wrong, I was upset like everyone else about the Challenger disaster. I mean, I think we were all hooked in, you know what I mean? It was

[00:25:15] Andrea: I don't, like I know a lot of, you know, a lot of kids, like that's a, a, a core memory of watching it happen at school. I think I, you know, like I don't actually remember seeing it live or anything like that. I mean, obviously I remember it happening, but I didn't, I didn't, I don't remember knowing about it or what happened when I found out about it.

[00:25:34] Carmen: Yeah. I, I, I didn't watch it in school. Um, I was actually already out of school. I was out of high school by then. What, what year was it? 1986?

[00:25:44] Andrea: I think it was '86

[00:25:47] Carmen: I think maybe I was going to a work study thing or something like, uh, you know what I mean? 'Cause, um, but I feel like n- I didn't wa- I thought that was weird too. I think they stopped doing that watching live stuff. A lot of people watched it on YouTube, but that, that traumatized a lot of people, you know what I mean?

[00:26:18] Andrea: I really tried to think about that, and I mean, there's one person who comes to mind, and I'll be honest, I actually don't know that much about her, but it's Ann Richards

[00:26:38] Andrea: And I, like, I don't really know all of her policies or whatever, but she was so, like, take no shit, take no prisoners, uh, you know, but also had that, like, Southern lady thing that's like velvet hammer kind of vibe.

[00:27:30] Carmen: I'm, and I know people know it as, um, when he sings Amazing Grace, but that whole speech when he's talking about Reverend Pinckney, um, and all the people that were gunned down, and he's at the AME Church, and he... That whole speech, I almost know it by heart. It's just, he's very rhythmic in how he speaks. I mean, it's just, it...

[00:27:52] Carmen: Uh, Bill Clinton back in the day. Bill Clinton had great, I mean, he was such a great orator and he's turning 80. He turned 80 this year, Andrea. We're so old. I'm so old, not you. I'm so old. He turned 80.

[00:28:11] Carmen: Yeah. But Bill Clinton also had great-- He was just such a great speaker. Um, you

[00:29:46] Andrea: Well, I mean, they're m- it's a married couple and, you know, and then there's like some things happening with their kids and whatever, so, so yeah, there's some of that. Um, another one that I really like, uh, is... I haven't seen this in a really long time, but I remember really enjoying it, that movie Dave with Kevin Kline.

[00:30:50] Carmen: The reason why I love The West Wing so much, a TV show that I recommend everyone to watch, it's an, uh, it came because of The American President, right? That's how The West Wing started, and it's also Aaron Sorkin, but, um, really teaches you about how our government works. And it's not just about Democrats, it's also about Re- it's about how it works.

[00:31:12] Carmen: And what's really interesting about it too is, for me, I think, um, it's an easy way. And there's not a lot of romance and sex and all this stuff, and yet you're so intrigued because it's the relationships between the people, you know? So I encourage people to just watch even the first season. Uh, I mean, you should watch it all, but it's so well done and I still think, uh, uh, what's, how do you say it?

[00:31:37] Carmen: Uh, it still holds up today. You know what I mean? It's still a really good, Oh, wait. I wanted to talk about one more. Were you able to watch The Newsroom, that one scene with,

But listening to right-wing political podcast hacks who really don't know the diff- seriously, like, like, that's, that's why you all ended up voting for Trump. It's true

[00:33:03] Carmen: Exactly. Haven't read anything, don't have any information, and then are just spewing all this crapola, um, and

[00:33:22] Andrea: No. I mean, I would say most if not all of the guys I've dated and, and the one that I married, I was gonna say guys I've married, the one that I married are, are like more conservative than me, but

[00:33:38] Andrea: I... Well, yeah, that's the thing. Like, if you're gonna be left of me, you're basically like a, you know, camping out in trees and stuff like that.

[00:33:45] Andrea: So, um, so but n- I would never, I could never. Never.

[00:33:51] Carmen: I dated two... Yeah, I dated two guys, and then when I found out, dumped them.

[00:33:57] Carmen: Well, it wasn't gonna work, you know? But I also can't date a guy who's super liberal either. Like, it's better for me to date somebody who's really, they're into politics but not that much, 'cause if they're, if, if they're too into it, it, we- we're gonna fight if they're too left. If

[00:34:13] Carmen: we're too like, you know, Yeah. 

[00:34:14] Andrea: mean, I, um, I don't really talk about politics that or haven't... You know, like my husband and I will sometimes, and there are definitely things that we disagree on. Um, you know, but ultimately he takes my ballot and votes the way I want him to vote, so. I, I will still, you know, like he'll choose some, some of his own, but for the most part it's like, "Here, here's how you're voting."

[00:34:43] Carmen: As it should be. Yeah, no, that's

[00:34:45] Andrea: I've done the work, I've done the research. So, you know, if there is something he disagrees, we'll talk about it, you know? And there are like, uh, he voted for, um, yeah, we voted for some, some different candidates here and there, but

[00:34:58] Carmen: Yeah, I can't imagine him voting for... Yeah. Anyways, yeah. I mean, look at when I was married, it was kind of the same thing, and now complete opposite. Like, he's... Uh, and it's like, uh, that has other issues, that has other drama going on. But, uh, and which is why we don't really talk that much even though we have respect for each other, uh, my ex.

[00:35:18] Carmen: But yeah, I think, um, I think sometimes it's one person in the relationship who probably has more of the political strength as far as doing the research or whatever it is. Not strength, but like, you know. And look at, I call you all the time like, "Ah, who you voting for for this?" The problem is you don't live in my area, so you can't even help me with my local, so that really pisses me off.

[00:35:41] Carmen: Uh, but I used to back in the day when we lived near each other, you know, I'd be like, "Are you vo- What did you vote for this?" You know what I mean? 'Cause sometimes it's a lot of work, but it's worth it. It's worth it to do the work so you can vote 

[00:35:53] Andrea: is

[00:35:54] Carmen: I was gonna ask you, is there anything about the conservative or Republican platform either now, I doubt now, or back in the day that you might have appreciated at all even though you are not in that camp?

[00:36:10] Andrea: No. I literally can't think of anything, and, and here's why. Like, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not not open, let's put it that way. But like I-- it's, it's hard for me to look back and not see, as we just talked about, a straight line to where we are. You know, if you wanna talk about like family values or, um, you know, uh, I remember a big thing that used to get me riled up was like, and this was actually a Democrat, Tipper Gore and her whole like, you know, uh, campaign against explicit lyrics and shit like that.

[00:36:51] Andrea: You know, that's a straight... And then she's a Democrat, right? Like straight line to some of the censorship and, and like First Amendment challenges that we see today. So, so my answer is to that, like I, maybe there are some and I just can't think of any, but like it's because I can just see like all of this shit is what got us where we are today.

[00:37:10] Carmen: Sue, back in the day when I was working for the guys at Technical Data, Thomson Reuters, before I went to college, everyone knows at the end of my book, again, my book.

[00:37:22] Andrea: I need to, I need to, I need to put it up on a little thing

[00:37:25] Carmen: I know, like I should... I need to have, like, a bookcase or something. Um, but you

[00:37:29] Andrea: You're supposed to have like a stack behind you so you can just

[00:37:31] Carmen: like, "Canela, Canela, Canela, No. But, um, they, you know, they were the reason why I ended up going to college, and I'll always be grateful for that, and I was really close to so many of them. And, um, long story short, I think most of them are conservatives, as I've gotten to know them as I've gotten older and I've kind of stopped talking to especially one of them, and, one of them who I absolutely love and adore.

[00:37:55] Carmen: I would have these huge conversations with him. When I moved to California, we would have these conversations about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton and, you know, and how he would never vote for them and whatever. And I started to just see kind of the reason why I have issues with such conservatives and Republicans is, like, even respectfully, and this is somebody I loved and credit so much for helping me get to college, what broke my heart is, like, he used words like colored, you know?

[00:38:25] Carmen: And all of a sudden I was like, "Wait, what?" You know? And, and I yelled and screamed at him 'cause now I wasn't a kid anymore, right? Now I was, like, this woman who was now having a battle with him, and I was like, "What is wrong with you?" You know? And there's this underlying inability to unders- to see me as an equal, to see anybody of color or woman as equal, even if his verbiage was trying to pretend that he was, even though his education is of the best of the best, right?

[00:38:55] Carmen: They hate all the elite education, but they all have them. And, and I'm not just saying, like, I'm-- 'cause I will always love him and always have such res- you know, respect for him for what he did for me. But it was hard to not connect his conservative Republicanism with his wealth and with his inability to see racism so blatantly in his own life, like how he's... You know what I mean? And, and I, I don't talk to him anymore because there was so much evidence of it in our conversations. That's when I moved here. This is when I'm an adult. I'm already past college, and we're having these conversations, and, and I always think about that. Like, it's not that all conservatives and Republicans are racist.

[00:39:43] Carmen: No, no, it's that most racist who are-- What am I trying to say? I'm messing it up

[00:39:47] Andrea: But most racists are conservative,

[00:39:50] Carmen: Yes. Right, so 

[00:39:51] Andrea: they fall on that spectrum,

[00:39:53] Carmen: They fall in that spectrum, and they may not realize it, but um, but I, I was shooketh by that.

[00:40:01] Carmen: There was a time in my life, and there still is a time, where I can understand the ideals of what used to be the Republican Party, what their thought process is, right? The idea of not having so much government in your business, right? That used to be their thing, and somehow they're all up in our business now.

[00:40:20] Carmen: That's all they do. But I can understand that, right? Wanting that ability to, to protect your privacy, but they don't do that anymore.

[00:40:28] Andrea: Well, they never really did. It was like they wanted government out of their finances, but all up in our bedrooms,

[00:40:37] Carmen: Right.

[00:40:38] Andrea: right? All up in our bathrooms

[00:40:40] Carmen: right? Telling us who we can pray to because it's okay to have the Ten Commandments in, uh, every public school, I guess, if you're in Texas or whatever, but you can't have a Torah or a, whatever the Muslim

[00:40:53] Andrea: Koran.

[00:40:54] Carmen: Quran, right, sorry, the Quran, whatever it is, or Buddha or whatever.

[00:40:58] Carmen: You can't have all those, you know? Um, I would prefer no religion being in any of our public schools, please. Uh,

[00:41:04] Carmen: so 

[00:41:05] Andrea: is, uh, stated by the Constitution.

[00:41:07] Carmen: Yeah, by the way, but whatever, that's just a small thing. Um, but yeah, like it just, it's so, it kinda bums me out because I think there were some things that might, like in the big scheme of things make sense, but it was never truthfully honored.

[00:41:24] Carmen: It was never truthfully, you know what I mean? Um, yeah. Eh, it's kind of a sad thing. Yeah. I, I would never date, uh, I know you're married, but I'm just saying I would never, I could never date somebody who is Trump supporter. Wouldn't even go- We don't even have to have that conversation. But anybody who's a Republican or a conservative, it would just be, uh, there's no way.

[00:41:53] Carmen: We would have 

[00:41:54] Andrea: says something about your character that is in total opposition to what I'm about. You know, to me, at this point certainly, but even, you know, years ago, if you're a Republican, here's what I think. You don't care about other people. You don't wanna contribute to a functioning society. Uh, you're probably racist or bigoted in some way.

[00:42:18] Andrea: Um, and honestly, like, y- you just are kind of an asshole. I mean, that's, you know, that, that's been my experience of people like that.

[00:42:28] Carmen: But, but I think there are people, like I think of Nicolle Wallace, right? She was the right-hand person, press secretary for, or she wasn't the press secretary, I don't know what she did, for Bush. But she's out of the Republican Party big time. You know what I mean? She has been, and she uses her platform on MSNBC or whatever it's called now, to talk against, and she always has, you know?

[00:42:47] Carmen: But I think that's what I'm talking about. There was a time when even if I disagreed with your stance on pro-life and pro-choice, you know what I mean? I, I'm pro-choice. Don't wanna make any confusion. But if I disagreed with you 'cause you're pro-life, we could have that conversation. But the weird thing is, is it always, always goes back to religion, which is a problem for me, right?

[00:43:10] Carmen: The, the pro-life stance has this weird idea that at, at the end of it, if you get into that conversation, it becomes about the Bible and what God wants, and it's like, no. See, like, now you've just used a, a, a thing where I, we can't argue anymore because you believe in something that I don't believe in, and we don't know what happens when we die, and I can't have that conversation with the good Lord right now.

[00:43:35] Carmen: You know? I don't, I, I can't fight with you whether or not it's a, it's a, a person or a fetus. I believe it's a fetus. If it can't live outside my body, it does not make it as a human. So you know what I mean? And we can have those conversations. Like, um, but I've never had a really good argument, fight with somebody who's pro-life that didn't go back to a Bible-ism, and that's the problem with the conservative right on that issue

[00:44:02] Andrea: Yeah, I agree. They, well, and that, I mean, that's another thing, like they use religion, Christianity specifically, they weaponize it.

[00:44:11] Carmen: Yeah. They weaponize faith 

[00:44:14] Carmen: So, so weird. Hmm. What do you think is the greatest reason our country is a mess right now? Besides Trump and his minions

[00:44:28] Andrea: Uh, but on, you're gonna hate my answer, but I'm gonna say social media.

[00:44:35] Carmen: Oh, social. I thought you were gonna say racism. I was like, "She gonna say racism again." Mm.

[00:44:38] Andrea: No. I mean, that's the

[00:44:39] Carmen: I- No, no. I don't hate your answer of social

[00:44:41] Andrea: It's the first thing I thought of, but I do think that there's just something about the, the, the vibe of it all that's like, you know, the rage bait and the like, "Okay, I, I have to share my opinion about this thing," and, you know, those kinds of things that I think has been really detrimental over the last, what, 20 years-ish.

[00:45:02] Carmen: Look at, I just had a, I just had a conversation with somebody on their comment section. They wrote a whole thing. YouTube, this is a great example. YouTube has just changed their algorithm, um, a- or, or they've changed the requirements for you to be able to, um, commercialize your success on YouTube. So like, I don't even notice 'cause I don't have that many followers at the moment, but the followers we have are genuine, right?

[00:45:28] Carmen: We have about, I think, 230 or something followers on YouTube. And, um, it doesn't matter what we post, we can't seem to get into the hook of the algorithm so that more people can see us, okay? But there are a lot of creators out there who are just completely using AI. They have thousands and thousands and millions of views, thousands of subscribers, and YouTube says that they're going against that, they don't want that, and yet they've just changed it.

[00:45:57] Carmen: So like, if you had to have... And I don't know what the numbers are 'cause I, I get all confused, but let's say you had to have, um, 1,000 subscribers. Like now you have to have like, I don't know, 5,000 subscribers, whatever it is, and you have to have a certain amount of hours to even qualify, and they've doubled everything.

[00:46:14] Carmen: And so people are upset about it, right? My thing is, YouTube is free. They don't charge us to be on the platform, so you can't get upset about it 'cause you're the, you're the commodity right now, right? You're, you posting on their, on their s- software or whatever is for free, so they're gonna do whatever they want.

[00:46:36] Carmen: But what I can't stand, and this is kind of what you're talking about in a roundabout way, what I can't stand is that they're pretending, and I'm talking to you, YouTube, they're pretending that they care about the little content creators, that they care... No, the, the algorithm keeps shifting everything to the car crashes, a- to the AI, to wherever people are continuously watching, right?

[00:47:01] Carmen: And they're gonna watch whatever you give them, right? You're... There, there's this great... I can't belie- I wasn't prepared to do this, but now I'm gonna do it. If you don't mind, give me a second. Um, there's this great line in The American President, the movie The American President, right? Lewis Rothschild, which is played by, uh, Michael J.

[00:47:22] Carmen: Fox, he says to the president, " People want leadership, Mr. President. And in the absence of genuine leadership, they'll listen to anyone who steps up to the microphone. They want leadership. They're so thirsty for it, they'll crawl through the desert toward a mirage. And when they get there, they'll drink the sand."

[00:47:38] Carmen: And then President Andrew Shepherd, who's played by Michael Douglas, says, " They don't drink the sand because they're thirsty. They drink the sand because they don't know the difference." with like something like YouTube or any of the other social media is they have all this power to help kind of push along what the conversation can be, but what they do is we want clickability, we want profit, we want...

[00:48:04] Carmen: So if Carmen and Andrea can fight and scream and yell and blah blah blah, they'll get more views. But if they're just talking intelligently and giving facts and having a, a conversation, we're not gonna push that as much So that's k- when you talk about it like that, I agree with you.

[00:48:21] Carmen: Social media is horrible because the people that own social media are not being responsible people and helping create a better society. When you hear me talk about that I think s- social media is great is because I don't blame the technology for what it has been used for. I can see the good in how it connects people that would never have been connected.

[00:48:45] Carmen: I see the, I see the forest, right? I'm not looking at the little trees, and it's just a shame. It's like everything else in our country, you know, or in our world, you know? Uh, fucking everything is petty, petty, petty about money and profit instead of about quality. You can make money with quality, and you can help people, you know?

[00:49:07] Carmen: I'm sorry, I went on a little bit of a tirade, but you see what I'm saying though, right? 

[00:49:11] Andrea: I don't disagree with you.

[00:49:13] Carmen: Yeah. So again, you and I disagree, but we really don't because when we get down to the depth of things, I think we're on the same page. Like the death penalty last week when we kind of had that moment, right? But you know what I'm saying, right? 

[00:49:27] Andrea: Yeah. 

[00:49:28] Carmen: Yeah. Hmm. All right. 

[00:49:30] Carmen: Well, I do wanna mention a couple things before we jump off, though. Uh, I did an amazing interview with, uh, Steven Seidenberg, and it's about art, and it's in the private lounge.

[00:49:41] Carmen: We did it this past weekend, and I'm getting a lot of feedback on it, and it's really great. It's high art, right? High art. And actually, you know, the more... I, I've watched it a few times now. I mean, I edited it, but then I watched it a few times 'cause I was shocked by some of the feedback we're getting. What I realized about high art, it's just art you don't understand.

[00:50:00] Carmen: You know what I mean? Like, that's all it is. Um, and it's okay if you don't like it, but what's great about talking to him is that I started to realize, like, art is art.
