Being the Voice of Your Highest Self with Darius J
What does it truly mean to step into the spotlight as your highest spiritual self? In this episode, I welcome The Voice contestant Darius J to explore the delicate dance between authentic expression and divine surrender.
Darius reveals his approach to maintaining authenticity under intense public scrutiny with disarming simplicity: "I don't really think of anything as being this huge thing. No matter what the opportunity, it's just another day to be me." This philosophy has allowed him to navigate the pressures of the national spotlight while staying connected to his purpose.
When writing music, he connects and allows divine guidance to flow through him. This surrender creates a pathway for authentic expression that resonates deeply with audiences. Darius candidly shares his experience with harsh criticism and the spiritual protection required to continue sharing his gifts. Most powerfully, he offers wisdom for anyone feeling constrained by self-limitation: "The biggest thing holding you back is yourself, which means you also have everything you need to set yourself free."
Whether you're an artist seeking to deepen your creative connection or simply trying to express your authentic self more fully in everyday life, this conversation offers profound guidance on allowing your unique light to shine while remaining grounded in spiritual truth. As Darius beautifully reminds us, "No one's you, and that's your superpower."

Hey, this is Intuitive India Lee, and this is the Guides Podcast. This is, oh, I love this episode because I get the chance to talk with the Voice contestant, darius J, and he is just the coolest, I mean, you'll see. So the concept of this podcast, the Guides, is that we are all guides for each other. We have spirit guides, but we are earthly spirit guides for each other as well, and there are messages in everything, and in Darius's case, the messages come through him, from spirit in the form of music, and he's just remarkable. He has an amazing gift for writing as well as performing music, and I will put links in the description of the episode if you want to check him out some more.
Speaker 1:So let's dive in now to our talk. I'm really excited you're willing to be on the podcast that what I wanted to hear from you about and share with people. It has to do with stepping into the spotlight in your highest embodiment. You know, in your spirit self, in your highest expression of you, and you know it's something that I feel like more people are going to be called to do or feeling the call to do this year and moving forward, where we're each being asked by the universe, by spirit to step into the spotlight, whatever that looks like for you, it's a literal spotlight.
Speaker 1:For some people it might be, you know, starting their own business or just being more expressive in their relationships, being more honest, like being your true self and in a way that really allows you to be seen, and for some people that's really, really scary. So I wanted to kind of invite you as a guide, to guide the rest of us in how to really step into that spotlight and still be yourself, still be fully you and allow yourself to be used by spirit, like I know you do.
Speaker 2:Oh, that's awesome.
Speaker 1:What's your secret?
Speaker 2:What's my secret Delusion?
Speaker 1:Delusion.
Speaker 2:No, I don't know. It's just like for me. I don't really think of anything as being like this huge thing. You know every day, no matter what the opportunity, no matter what it is, it's just another day to be me. So it's like when you don't put too much weight on the opportunity or weight on the thing that you're doing, it just makes it so much easier to walk in as yourself.
Speaker 1:Yes, oh, that's huge because that applies to everything, that applies to just even starting the day, and some of us. You know, we start the day in the morning and it's like this feeling of oh God, like how am I going to do this day? Because our minds, our egos are already threatening us with all these worst case scenarios, case scenarios, and you're oh, that's so good that to to sort of lighten up on that sense of this is big or this.
Speaker 1:So how do you do that when you are, in your case, literally stepping out on the stage in front of millions of people, as you've done? How do you step fully into that opportunity without allowing it to tip into pressure?
Speaker 2:um, I don't again. I think it's just a matter of just like it's. It's when you are so in line with who you are and what your purpose and what you're supposed to do. It's like, whereas most people would look at it like this huge thing and for me it was just again something that came naturally. It's like don't fight what you know your body tells you to do naturally, or what you feel naturally Like. I think that's the best advice I can give.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yeah, and as you, darius, you know, being used in your soul purpose. I know you are very devoted to to spirit, to god, and to being a mouthpiece and and you write beautiful songs that are around your faith and around your spirit, focus and just around who you are as well. When you're lending yourself as literally a mouthpiece to spirit, what does that feel like? How do you get in the flow to do that? What's your process like for connecting with that?
Speaker 2:Oh, that's for me, and I didn't realize that that's what was happening until I realized that a lot of people don't do my process the same A lot of people do. Whenever they write, it's like a lot of ego. So for me it's just a matter of understanding that there's already a narrative there that I'm supposed to tell, there's already something there, and that the job that I'm assigned to do is bigger than me and my experiences. So I'll pick a beat, I'll pick some type of production. And it's so weird because I always say like, whenever, if you notice, I lean more towards acoustic guitar and I always say I literally just said this, I hear God in acoustic guitar, like it's, like it's the most beautiful thing. And then for me it's just I just let God take control from there. You know, like it's, like I don't, yeah, it's just about. It's about, you know, humbling yourself and kind of putting your ego aside and just knowing that what you're doing is better, is bigger than you and your story.
Speaker 1:That is it. That is like it, with a capital I and a capital T, because it's just like that sense of this is bigger than me. No comforting to the soul is so threatening to the ego, and it feels like it's the thing that puts people at war with themselves you know and at war with, with spirit and each other. Really is that sense of nothing can be bigger than me. I cannot allow this thing to be bigger than me. It's a fear.
Speaker 2:And it's exhausting, like it's so exhausting Like I have to and because I know that sometimes it makes it like I'll procrastinate on actually getting started, because I was like I'll be like, oh, this is gonna take so much of me I have to surrender. And then, oh yeah, and then you get in it and it's like this literal high and it's like after it's over you're so, so right, it is the same.
Speaker 1:I feel like it's the same feeling as when, like you, do anything that's good for you, like you know you're gonna exercise and you're doing it.
Speaker 1:you're like, I know this is going to make me feel good, but the process is, you know, feels like such a pain to the ego or such a pain to, you know, my brain or brain or whatever. You're right. And the dance with spirit, it feels like it does require us to take those first steps. Spirit's kind of like you know, I'm gonna be a great dance partner and I'm gonna meet you and I'm gonna like, sweep you off your feet, but you first have to walk on the dance floor. I'm not going to go and pull you out of the crowd.
Speaker 2:Right no-transcript.
Speaker 1:And sometimes we do. Sometimes we take a minute and just step out of things and go, you know what, and then we just have to get back out there and go.
Speaker 2:I want to dance with spirit, yeah like trying to remind myself that it's okay to rest. And it's crazy because, like right now, I am like you can tell that I haven't like actually rested in a very long time, because it's like every day, for like the past week it's just been nonstop sleep like a sleeper thon.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and and being in tune with that rhythm, like knowing, okay, you just came off of months of performing for the nation, of competing with your gift and and when you're in that or or in anything intense like that, you don't notice. You know, putting out so much yang energy and putting out so much output, and then when we stop and our and our bodies and our minds and our and our heart and our soul are like time to take a, a deep yin, deep dive. Right, I need to go deep into rest and I feel like performers or anyone who does something high intensity, you must have to get used to that rhythm of if I do a big tour or whatever it is, I'm putting so much out there I'm gonna have to plan for several months of of rest it's sleep, oh my god.
Speaker 2:I remember like, when we finished the day we finished filming. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was walking around the hotel the next day and I literally couldn't even like keep my eyes open, like as soon as we stopped filming it was like, oh my god, like. And it's not just film, because filming was you know about a year ago at this point. It's not just filming, it's also just a process of watching your art be perceived, and going through that week by week. That was exhausting.
Speaker 1:Because every part of you is involved in that and you must have to be very self-loving and mindful of the way you take in that feedback, of the way you take in that feedback you allow yourself. You know the part that you have to just be your own protector in a in a positive way.
Speaker 1:Hey, hey, you know you're sharing your gift. Not everyone's going to respond the way we would love some people do, but either way, this is a beautiful gift that Spirit's using and I feel like that surrender to the something bigger, like you said, helps with that. It's kind of similar with doing this work that I do with readings and with feeling into people's messages. It's like you know, you can be a reading for, for your audience, of one, and they can be like everything resonates, I feel it, I absolutely love it. Or they can be in their ego, or just not a vibrational fit and they can say, nope, I hate everything about this, I don't, you know.
Speaker 1:And it, the surrender, the saying I'm being used as a, as a vessel on them. It takes the ego out of things so that you can say, okay, that's all right. That's sort of between you and spirit. Same I would feel with your gift where you could say, okay, if it's not for you, that's, you know, that's. I'm not going to take that personally, but I'm sure it depends on the day and the mood that personally, but I'm sure it depends on the day and the mood.
Speaker 2:How easy, I know I had time, because for me I guess I was, you know, the the greater the the responsibility in in life, the the bigger the the pushback from people. Because you know people mean and it's like they weren't like and I noticed I got it harder than everybody else and they weren't like attacking. You know just my art. It was like you were attacking like just me. It was so gross and it was just a lot of like ups and downs for me, which I'm happy it was me and not anybody else, because I know that no one else would have been able to do that.
Speaker 1:Well, and I mean so much of that is like you said you don't identify as a performer, you don't identify with ego and you're out there being a pure vessel, and I feel like that does make us a target in a way for for for energies that are lower. I remember I was mentoring with a reader who had a big, big audience. This was years ago and I was just starting off with my little YouTube channel and, like you know, just giving readings to a few people. And then it was growing and somebody people started posting criticism, whatever, and I would go to my mentor and be like, oh no, I'm on the wrong track, and he was like, oh no, that means you're on the right track because that means your, your, your message is getting magnified and it's attracting the stone throwers.
Speaker 1:That's a good sign. And same with you, it's like you know when, when to call it the darkness, when the lower vibration sees that light shining so brightly, it's like, oh, there's a nice target, let's yeah and yeah again. I feel like the he is invoking that, that bigger protection, saying you know, I know spirit is taking care of me, but it is very hard to take care of your heart.
Speaker 2:It was. I will say that, even to just focus on the positive, it's like you can't, I know. It's like he's a buffalo in a dress, like what. Who comes up with this stuff? Was I a cute buffalo, right? It's like he's a buffalo in a dress, like what, what? Who comes up with this stuff?
Speaker 1:Was that Keith Buffalo? Yeah, it's like, how do you feel about buffalo?
Speaker 2:Yeah.
Speaker 1:But it's like you know, I feel like the thing that helps most with, I mean, some level. It is just like that is cruel, that is, that is dark, that is not, you know, of the light of love and I and I'm not allowing that near me like I like to literally just send it away. Be like you know, archangel Michael, take this away, don't let it near me. It's, don't let it touch my you know my energy and they will take it away. But also it's like another layer of compassion that says, oh my god, the voice that comes up with that insult is in this person's head all the time, criticizing, criticizing them all the time, you know, isn't that?
Speaker 1:it's like whatever you hear, whatever they allow to come out toward you, is a projection of, of their inner dialogue all the time, and I just got chills on that and it is, it's so sad and it's so it does take you to that place of oh wow, that that is.
Speaker 1:That is unfortunate, you know. But, and knowing that that spirit, your guides, you know they do see all and they do see you being a beautiful vessel of the light and of your gifts and and enduring that and and that divine justice does happen. And you know, but know, but again, it takes. It does take that surrender of being like I'm going to trust that. I'm going to trust that. You know it's hard, it's hard, it can be hard. Well, and that's the thing about being human is we're so many things in one. You know, we're able to be on these other planes. We are also on this plane of existence. We're able to access our inner child. We're also able to access our outer protector or bully or whatever it is, and we're on so many levels at the same time and we've got our mental and our physical and our emotional and our energetic. It's like it's a lot to manage. So just even having that compassion toward ourselves, like wow.
Speaker 2:I'm doing a whole thing. Just talking about it is exhausting.
Speaker 1:I'm making you more tired. I know I love that. So, as you kind of like, okay, so you, being a performer, you have those big things and when you are like I've done a reading for you, I've seen your, your future, I know that your, your trajectory is, is huge and it will just grow and grow and grow. And you're in the training now of, okay, you put out all that yang energy, now let's get in it. And that cycle is going to continue on a bigger and bigger level where it's like, okay, now it is your tour, and now you do need three months to rest, and now it is this, and now you are making an album, and now you do need you know. So, as you set your sights forward, what have you noticed yourself making a decision for yourself that you want to do? Moving forward, you know, as you move into that destiny even more, what things do you want to take with you? What do you want to leave behind?
Speaker 2:you know what? I just, um, I want to leave behind, like doing anything for anybody else's benefit, like, and I just want to do what makes me happy, um, no matter how it feels to anybody else, like, as long as it feels good to me. And I've noticed that when I do that is when I'm, you know, aligned with what I'm supposed to be doing, like, so it's like being in the places I want to be in and also settling, like I have to, like sometimes I get very content and I want to step outside of that and continue to always push myself to the next level, because if I didn't do that, I wouldn't have been on the show. So, just, and I'm in this weird period of trying to figure out, you know, what's next and what I really want, what's my heart calls for. I kind of have an idea, but it's just about following through on that and no matter how scary it is.
Speaker 1:Right and knowing that sometimes even the not knowing I mean not just sometimes the not knowing is the most powerful place to be because, that's when you know for sure that you're being guided. And, by the way, because I do this, uh, a little bit compulsively, I'm pulling cards as we talk, and I just do it all the time. And as I'm pulling all whoop whoa, I gotta tell you. Can I give you a personal message, even though we're sharing this?
Speaker 1:it's okay okay, look, all four major archangels just came out of this deck. There's, you know, and there's a whole big deck that just has a bunch of things. All the archangels came out in a row for you just now, and then they came out with this card that says anxiety. So they're saying, in this moment, even though the unknown is triggering, your anxiety is triggering, you know, because the unknown is exciting, but it's also like it's unknown and our egos are like you know what?
Speaker 1:I better figure it out you know and no, we don't have to figure it out, because you are so incredibly powerful, protected and guided. I have to tell you. I told you about this when we did your reading before but, I, saw that entourage.
Speaker 1:I saw that entourage around you, both of physical and of angelic beings, right, and they just came out and they just reminded you like you are being guided, are being guided, protected, basically managed by that divine entourage. So so that anxiety that says I need to figure out no, you don't actually. You know, staying in the space of not figuring it out, but but of you know I'm being shown and I know it's going to feel like this.
Speaker 1:I know it's going to feel like you know. I imagine when you're on the Voice, there is a feeling that you connected with that. You were like more of this, yes, yeah, and that is what I see coming in. What did that feeling? How would you describe that feeling?
Speaker 2:I don't know, it's just happiness and contentment, and then it's like you can pick up on it in certain. You know what you're supposed to be doing because you pick up on it when you do certain things. Now it's like every time I get up to my computer and start looking for places in California, that feeling it's like. It's like a that's the guidance.
Speaker 1:Oh, I'm so glad you said that and you also got Archangel Michael here with. This is your life's purpose, that feeling right when you talked about that feeling that came out and and persevere. It's happening. So I love that you said that, because that is the one thing that you just honed in on. You're so intuitive, that feeling that says yes.
Speaker 1:When people are in readings and they're questioning, what should I do, you know, when you feel that feeling, you don't wonder, you just feel it and you're like, oh yeah, this is it, you know. And your mind might wonder, like you look at something for California. You're like, yep, I feel it. And you're like, oh yeah, this is it, you know. And your mind might wonder, like you, you look at something for California. You're like, yep, I feel it. And then your mind goes, well, how is that going to happen?
Speaker 1:But when we go okay, that's the feeling, and then, instead of going well, I have to figure out how to make it happen, we go, okay, spirit, please show me the next steps and how that happens or how I move into that feeling more. Then the next step is revealed and it's really just like what you were saying with surrendering to the gift, to the music. It's surrendering to the path. You know, and isn't it funny how our minds and other people, they tend to label that, as you know, you're not doing the thing or you're not taking the action, and it's like, oh no, actually that's the highest possible action you can take is to be open and listen. You know, and I just I get so excited hearing you describe that feeling, because that that is the feeling. You almost can't, it's hard to put it into words.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it really is. And then I'll have those moments where you know you have. You'll think of things that'll come up that are stopping you from getting that feeling all the time. And then my brain how my brain works I'll imagine the solution like in the most grand way, like I like I was like thinking about cali. I was like, oh, my god, how am I going to do this with the money? And it's like bam in my head. I was like you have two hundred thousand dollars.
Speaker 1:It's like I started to like imagine all the things that I'll do that would right, and the great thing about that is it opens up to the energy, but I feel like what we tend to do as humans. What a lot of people hearing this probably find themselves doing is what we do is we go.
Speaker 1:Okay, I love that feeling Okay, yes, I'm going to do this. I'm calling in the money, okay, and then maybe their car will break down or maybe, you know, something will happen and it'll go. And then our minds will go you're an idiot. Why did you think that you were gonna get 200 000? What are you gonna do? And then we sink down lower and that's how the lower vibrational energy gets a hold of us. But when we go okay, my car broke down. That sucks Spirit. Please show me how I'm still being helped on this path. Then you might find oh wait, my car broke down, but the mechanic knows somebody that hooked me up with somebody. And oh, I see what my guides are doing, right. So it's like being open to how even those knocks can be part of the path. That's the real magic I feel.
Speaker 1:But our minds are so quick because of conditioning and because of that they're trying to protect us from disappointment. They're trying to be like oh, give up on your dream. Look, that devil literally just came out. You know, give up on your dream. Look that devil literally just came out. You know, give up on your dream. You know you never. And we are kind of quick to be like that's true, you know, and then have to climb back out again. But I feel like the real art of living in flow is learning to live with. That kind of this is somehow also helping me on my path. It's not a dead end, there are no dead ends, and if there was a dead end I would turn around and quickly find the path again.
Speaker 2:You know, and trusting that it's difficult, it's difficult, yeah you just got to know that the path is not going to be all butterflies, trees and fish.
Speaker 1:But we want it to be. We want it to be.
Speaker 2:Thank you, disney, they lied.
Speaker 1:So I'm going to do this.
Speaker 2:So I'm going to do this, I, because you are so intuitive I am going to show you a card and ask you to tap into what you feel like the people listening to this, the message that spirit is sending through you for them.
Speaker 1:okay, so does that make sense? So I'm just intuitively scary. It was scary, I know I like to, you know, give you the unexpected, okay. So this is the card and I want you to just feel into what we need to know. And let me describe it because I know not everybody's looking. Okay, so it's got a woman who's kind of maybe underwater or maybe just in the evening light, but she's tied up by vines and they're very you know, they're very flimsy looking vines. It looks like she could break right out of them and there's a rose bush and she's kind of shyly looking like am I, am I tied up, am I not? And it's called all tied up and the number is 23, which adds up to a five, which is the number of change.
Speaker 2:You know what my immediate thought is like? You're in control of your own destiny and a lot of the times, the biggest thing that's holding you back is yourself. Yourself, which means that which gives you a lot of control, because you realize that, yeah, I've been holding myself back, but that means I also have everything that I need to set myself free.
Speaker 1:Yeah, yes. And recognizing how that's beautiful, I'm recognizing how human it is and how tempting it is to just go oh, there's nothing I can do about it. I'm tied up, I'm helpless and it's like actually, no, you could snap right out of that anytime you wanted. It's just that once you do that, you're probably going to have to do something like it's yeah, yeah or maybe you have to do something different in what we've been doing I love that card for it.
Speaker 1:I love that, thank you, yes, okay, so if there's one thing that that comes through to you when you're working with spirit and writing music, when you're expressing, when you're connecting, that is some wisdom or some healing or something you would want to share with people, what would that be? Or what, what would those things be?
Speaker 2:it doesn't have to be just one thing I'm writing, um, I I would say there's literally no right or wrong way to do it.
Speaker 2:You know, there's so many people out there trying to tell you that this should be done this way or that should be done that way. You know, no one's you and that's your superpower, know, no one can tell you how to do what you're assigned to do. So, like when it comes to music or when it comes to anything, just lead with love and lead with what feels right to you, because music is, you know, is God and there's no way for anybody. Just like you know, no one can define your version of God or your relationship with God. No one can define your relationship with music and tell you what's wrong or right about it. You know, I see a lot of people like have done that to me and a lot of people are, you know, trying to pretty much put music in a box or put creative things in the box, when literally the idea of it is to be free. So that's my advice Be free.
Speaker 1:I love that, I love that. And if you don't feel free, you know asking yourself is that something that I'm imposing on me, you know? And if so, why am I doing that? You know, questioning, questioning the belief that make you feel not free. Yeah, Thank you, Darius. That was the amazing Darius J. There is information in the episode description. If you want to reach out to him or just check out his music and for future episodes, feel free to message me if you have any questions you'd like to ask. And I've been offering a once a month free readings episode so that we can share some of the messages that come through for people personally, because they might resonate with other people.
