Collagen – assisting with postpartum hair loss

Hi everyone. I’m your host, Tracy, founder of Au Natural Skinfood, and I’d like to thank you for taking time out of your busy day to join me.

We’re talking about postpartum hair loss today, and I know that if you are pregnant, have a little one, or both, free time is scarce. But you’re still important, mama, and you deserve some TLC, too.

Have you noticed that when you’re pregnant, everyone tells you you’re glowing and talks about how lush and beautiful your hair looks? That’s because your hormones cause your hair to grow faster and fall out less.

Once you have your baby, that process is reversed, and you’ll likely notice more hair falling out. If you are breastfeeding, you may not notice hair loss until you stop, but inevitably, our hormones go back to pre-pregnancy levels, and our hair just isn’t as thick and healthy as it was before.

Some women are even shocked to find their hair falling out in clumps. It’s a topic that isn’t talked about enough and can really catch new mothers by surprise.

If you are experiencing postpartum hair loss, don’t worry. You’re not alone. It’s a perfectly normal part of your estrogen levels dropping after pregnancy--but that doesn’t mean we enjoy it!

So what can you do? Well, one really simple and very effective way to help restore your healthy hair is by taking a collagen supplement.

You may already be familiar with collagen as a supplement for joint and skin health, but it does wonders for hair, too. That’s because it’s loaded with amino acids like proline that help your body create new hair growth.

Your hair is made mostly of a protein called keratin, and proline is one of the main building blocks that create it. When you add collagen to your diet, you’re giving your body an ample supply of proline that it can use to grow new hair.

Collagen also acts as an antioxidant, protecting your hair from damage caused by free radicals. Marine collagen in particular is a potent antioxidant capable of fighting the damage free radicals cause to your hair follicles.

We don’t always think about the fact that hair grows out of our skin, so our skin health matters, too. The layer of skin where the roots of your hair are located is called the dermis, and 70% of it is made of collagen.

Supplementing with collagen increases the health and elasticity of your skin, which in turn allows your skin to replenish its cells. This increased cellular turnover helps protect the roots of your hair and reduces hair loss.

When I first started taking collagen after having my fourth baby, it was because my joints were aching, my digestive system was struggling, and I noticed a loss of elasticity in my skin.

However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my hair also grew faster and became stronger and healthier. I knew I had to share that knowledge with other women who were dealing with postpartum hair loss.

I’m a big proponent of collagen now, so much so that I worked with a consulting physician for two years to develop Au Natural Skinfood’s hair, skin, and nails collagen powder.

It contains sustainably harvested marine collagen, so you can be sure you’re getting the best antioxidant activity and necessary omegas. It also contains vitamin C to help with absorption.

And we add Manuka honey to help you ward off infection and balance your gut microbiome. You probably know just how much pregnancy can throw off your digestive system. Manuka honey helps restore your health and get your digestive tract working properly again.

Finally, we include New Zealand grape seed extract, which works as an antioxidant to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in your body.

It’s all packaged in a compostable pouch and so simple to take. Just mix a teaspoon of powder into your favorite drink or smoothie. Or if you’d prefer, you can even put it into salad dressing or soup!

If you start adding collagen powder to your routine now, you’ll likely see results in 30 to 60 days. Your hair will be healthier, stronger, and grow more quickly. Plus, your skin, bones, and joints will benefit, as well!

I was thrilled with the difference collagen made for me, and I think you will be, too. If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email at [email protected].

Thank you for joining me today, and until next time, take care everyone!

In kindness
