105: Becca Tarnas – The Imagination and The Red Books of Tolkien & Jung

John Price

Interview begins @ 4:40

Join us in this episode of The Sacred Speaks as we explore the imagination with Dr. Becca Tarnas. We delve into her process and insights influenced by Tolkien and Jung, particularly focusing on Jung's active imagination and its co-creative role with the collective unconscious. Dr. Tarnas discusses how these experiences fueled Jung's work and paralleled Tolkien's creation of Middle-earth and "The Lord of the Rings."

Our discussion challenges the reductionist worldview, emphasizing how our perceptions are shaped and often limited. We explore Jung's influence on Dr. Tarnas, especially through her astrological perspective on archetypes, and critique the limitations of materialism in understanding imagination.

We also discuss the potential for transformation in confronting materialistic views, using archetypal astrology to understand this shift. The conversation covers heroic narratives, the role of the feminine in myth, and communing with the dead, as seen in Jung's "The Red Book." We conclude with a look at Dr. Tarnas's upcoming biography on Stanislov Grof and his work on psychedelics.
