117: To niche or not to niche? That is the question

Deirdre Amies - The FUN Business & Money Coach Episode 117

Some say you should niche, some say you shouldn't.

I say theres only one way to find out whats right for YOU and that's to go through the process!

Why? Because theres SO MUCH conflicting info about it out there! What works for one person may not work for you or anyone else. They may have nailed it in a micro niche, you may be better suited to a broader niche with a different area of expertise.

That's why I'm slowing it right down and devoting some extra time and attention to nailing your niche.

Over the next few episodes I'm going to break down my niche process for you into smaller, bite-sized pieces. Because lets face it, it can be pretty overwhelming!

But once you get it? EVERYTHING becomes easier.

You'll have more clarity on your ideal clients, what to say in your marketing, where those clients are hanging out, what they need from you to solve their problem, all.the.things!

Hey there, and welcome back to the Fun Business Fun Money podcast! I'm your host, Deirdre Amies.

I want to do something a little different over the next few coaching episodes, which come out on Tuesdays my time in Queensland Australia. Usually these are a slightly longer episode with a full breakdown of something you can implement in your life, business or money.

What we're going to do is slow it right down and get into the nitty gritty of a topic that can be REALLY overwhelming if someone throws it at you all in one go. Don't worry, we're going to cover it all, we're just not going to do it all in one go.

That's because I want you to dig a little deeper than usual, to go another layer or two further than you would otherwise.

Lets talk about your niche. Some say niche, some say niche, I don't like the itchiness of niche so I say niche!

I went into this in a previous episode, make sure you check out episode 61: The truth about your niche.

Here's my take on it.

As someone who identifies as a woman, a business owner, a parent, a kind and considerate human being, there are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a niche.

On the one hand, there's a deep rooted energy, almost a genetic code that we should help everyone. That comes from centuries of conditioning that women are "supposed to be" the nurturers, the caregivers, the support act.

On the other hand, there's a different kind of deep rooted energy around not burning myself out trying to BE everything to everyone.

Which one is stronger? It depends on the day, but overall, as I get older and more reflective on common beliefs, the "I don't WANT to help everyone" wins out every single time.

You shouldn't feel obliged to help everyone. As I said to a client recently when she was working through this topic with me, there is someone else better suited to help the ones that you don't.

Let me say that again - there is someone else better suited to help the ones that you don't help. It doesn't mean that you CAN'T help them, you just don't NEED to help them.

Here's my first question for you about your niche...

Who do you LOVE to help?

Its not necessarily a demographic, although there may be similarities between them and others such as an industry, a field of expertise, an age group, a stage of life.

Its about the personality match.

Think about your all time absolute favourite client. If you haven't had any clients yet, think about your favourite person and what it is about them.

The one you're excited to get on a call with, or you see a new message from them and you can't wait to see what they have to say.

Here's a little story to help you with this...

I've worked with health coaches, copywriters, web designers and virtual assistants, to name just a few. The common link between them all is that they work mostly online and they provide a professional service to others.

Within that though? There's a HUGE range of personalities, energies and expertise.

My all time favourite client? A web designer.

My least favourite client? Also a web designer.

The difference is their personality.

Working with one felt like I was dragging everything out of her. She's a very logical and process driven person, which is great for the work she does. I love logic and processes, as you'll know from listening to previous episodes. But it also meant it took a LOT longer for us to make progress because there was a mismatch in our energy.

She's a lovely human, highly skilled and effective in her work. I absolutely helped solve her problem, we're just not a great personality match when it comes to creating results and having FUN doing it.

Working with the other client felt like almost the complete opposite, it was basically a party vibe on every call we had. Which is ironic because I'm not really a party person! She's far more extroverted than me, we have quite different tastes in things. Yet we're exactly the same brand archetypes and a perfect match to work together.

This is why the niche process I take clients through in IGNITE, my business and money coaching program, is different to most you'll find out there in the online world.

Most will focus on demographics, or an industry, or a gender, or any number of standard things.

My process focuses on personality, both yours and your ideal clients'.

We take your brand archetypes, which influence how you show up online and in your business. There are 12 of them in total but we focus on your top two.

Your top brand archetype represents the core nature and motivation, the driving force of YOU that shows up in your business. Your second archetype gives you the dimension and personality, it brings a uniqueness to your brand.

We also take your money archetypes, which influence how you set your prices and interact with money in your business and your life.

With both of those we've now got a pretty clear picture of how you're going to present yourself.

But its still only HALF of the picture, because so far its all about YOU.

The other half comes from your favourite, perfect for you, ideal, dreamboat, soulmate, perfect fit clients. Your YES clients! However you like to refer to them lol What's in it for THEM?

We start that process by looking who they are. What are the key traits and behaviours of your previous and current clients? How do they make buying decisions? What motivates them to take action and get their desired result?

We play a guessing game as to what THEIR money archetypes could be, based on what you know about them. We can't say for sure unless we get those people to also take the money archetypes quiz. But we can make an educated guess based on their language and behaviour.

From there its a whole lot of fun, with most clients absolutely buzzing as we go through the process and work out why certain people are fab clients for them, and why some aren't.

You end up with a very clear niche and swipe right client profile matches.

Its also important to consider your expertise in all of this, which is why we take yet another layer deeper and look at how you can SPECIALISE within that niche.

Your niche is the people or industry that you work with or do work for, your ideal clients.

Your specialty is your expertise, the work you do, the skills and knowledge you use to create the results or outcomes people pay you for.

We'll talk about your expertise and the importance of specialising in next week's coaching episode.

For now though, go take my brand archetypes quiz and find out what yours are. It may surprise you!

And if you haven't already, take the sacred money archetypes quiz as well.

You'll find the links to both of them in the description and in the show notes.

Getting clear on your niche IS an important step for your business, whether you actually niche down or stay more general. Its about having the clarity as to WHY you market yourself in this way, or that way, or some other way.

Whatever you're saying in your marketing, its speaking to a particular personality trait in someone else. Knowing what that impact is makes everything feel easier, it creates more freedom and simplicity for the words you use, the content you create and the steps you take your clients through.

If this is resonating with you and you'd like to know more about my IGNITE niche process, lets talk! Is your marketing actually working? Could you do with some tweaks to your brand and wording so its hitting home for the right people?

Send me a DM and let's have a chat about what you need and how I can help you. I'm @funbusinessfunmoney, all one word, on Facebook and Instagram. And Threads!

You can DM me on LinkedIn, I'm Deirdre Amies there.

You'll find the links to all of those ways to get in touch in the description and in the show notes. Because lets face it, my name is NOT easy to spell!

Thats what I've got for you today!

Should you niche? Should you not? That is the question we'll answer over the next few episodes. Make sure you join me for next week's episode where we're going to look at how your particular set of skills can help a particular set of people. If you're getting a little Liam Neeson vibe there around a particular set of skills, you're spot on lol!

Take care - take the two quizzes to find out your brand and money archetypes! - have fun, and I'll catch you in the next episode.
