Becoming a driving instructor in the UK is a structured process, clearly outlined on the official GOV.UK website. This episode gives you a quick overview of the key stages, from initial registration through to taking (and preparing for) the three qualifying exams.

For full, up-to-date guidance, visit: https://www.gov.uk/become-car-driving-instructor

Once you know you meet the eligibility rules, your next step is to get an enhanced DBS check if you don’t already have a recent, valid one for ADI (Approved Driving Instructor) purposes.

On GOV.UK, you’ll find step‑by‑step instructions on how to apply, which organisation to use, and what documents you’ll need. You must have this DBS check in place before you can apply to become a driving instructor.

In this podcast, Sarah Hart, Director of Drive Hart Ltd—an official instructor training company based in Salisbury—talks you through the key steps and the three exams run by the DVSA that you must pass before you can become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI).

Tune in to learn what to expect at each stage, how long the process can take, and where to find reliable help and resources along the way.
