929. Are You Anchored In Beliefs & Stopped Believing?

Season 8 Episode 929

Send us a text

This is probably one of the most important episodes I’ve ever done.

We’re talking about the difference between beliefs and believing, and how clinging to old beliefs might be the very thing holding you back from building what’s next.

Beliefs can become traps.
They can turn into condemnation, regret, and self-sabotage, especially when you're trying to move forward but keep comparing yourself to who you used to be.

In this episode, I unpack insights from Bryan Eisenberg’s book, "I Think I Swallowed an Elephant," and reflect on how outdated belief systems create internal weight that we don’t even realize we’re carrying. You’ll hear how believing — the active version — is what keeps momentum alive, and why your next chapter won’t come from coasting on what got you here.

We’ll get real about the lies we tell ourselves, the quiet conversations we think no one hears, and how to update the internal software that runs our lives.

If you feel stuck…
If you’ve been successful in the past but can’t seem to reignite the fire…
If you know it’s time for a reset, this one’s for you.

Let’s rewrite the story.
 Let’s believe forward.
 Let’s get it!

All right. 3, 2, 1. Let's get it. Welcome to another episode of What's Your Problem Podcast, episode 9 29. We are on. And today, man, we're gonna talk about beliefs versus believing and how you can begin shaping your future no matter what your current situation looks like. Because sometimes I believe the biggest thing that's holding you back isn't your circumstances. It's the old story that you're living in because see, beliefs can keep you stuck, but believing. The thing that's gonna pull you forward and today I wanna unpack the difference and I'm gonna share some insights from Brian and Jeffrey Eisenberg's book. I think I swallowed an elephant love the title and tie it back to the real life tension and that's what it is. Tension between who you've been and who you're becoming. So let's get into it. So you ready? All right. Strap in. Let's go. Brian Eisenberg wrote something that just really just, it snagged me. He said I wasn't paying attention to the habits I'd fallen into, and three words really stood out for me. Pay attention and habits Because see if you don't pay attention to your habits and think about pay attention when you pay something. You're not a 5-year-old just dumping your change out to the cashier and hoping the cashier takes the right amount. No, you, when you pay for something, it's deliberate. It's focused. So when you pay attention to your habits, this is a practice. That's why it's called a practice. And so when you pay attention. You're practicing a sequence of events, and if you don't do that, your tendencies are gonna take over. Coasting will set in. Complacency is always there, and it'll just, it'll just overtake you and eventually you're gonna find yourself in the all of the sudden lands. All of the sudden you find yourself way off track. It didn't happen all of a sudden. It's just when you finally noticed you were way off track. It was the day of reckoning. You were like, oh, wait a minute. It's what happens. We've all been guilty of these things. It all comes back to this beliefs versus believing. See, beliefs are old. They're the past. They're what got you here, but believing is now. It's the action. It's the propeller that's gonna move you forward. I mean, here's what I believe, no pun intended. Here's, here's what I believe. I do believe that beliefs can become a form of self-sabotage. They really can, because think about times in your life where you were really riding high, you had money in the bank, great family situation. You were probably in the best shape of your life. Everything was clicking for you, and now not so much. You slid a little or maybe a lot. You're not where you used to be. And instead of believing forward, you're clinging to an old belief system that doesn't serve you anymore. So what's a consequence of that? Condemnation. You start beating yourself up. That internal narrative kicks in. You let yourself go. You took your eye off the ball. You always do this. See, it's that internal dialogue that no one hears. But they see it in your actions, and that's how you sabotage your own comeback. You kill the smallest successes because you're anchored in old regret, and this is when the coping starts. You numb out, you self-medicate, and this thing just perpetuates man, and you destroy. The very progress that you could be making because you're measuring yourself against a past version that you're no longer building toward. That's what old beliefs do. What were once steps have now become shackles and they keep you from believing something new. So what's the answer? What do you do from here? You build a new belief. One that fits who you're becoming, not just who you were, fuck who you once were. That person is gone. Let's be honest. You worked hard to get to a certain point in your life, but you fell in love with your old beliefs. You thought you had arrived. And because you thought you arrived, you let up, you got complacent and the problem, you stopped believing in anything new. And you began coasting and had the illusion that success was just gonna continue. But believing doesn't work that way. It's active. You have to continuously, and this is a lifelong thing, man, you have to continuously be rewriting the narrative and constantly shaping and making believe. You do. You do. I'm saying, bro, you gotta have that Disney mindset. You really do What? Do what, what do they call 'em? Imagineers. These, these, these, these creators. There's no limits. Everything's opulent. Nothing ends. They just keep adding. They keep shaping. The story gets bigger. And it gets grander. That's what it has to be in your own life, dude. You gotta have a Disney mindset in your life. Not a fantasy, but of progress. Small steps forward. If you don't write a future version of yourself, the present version's always gonna take over. And the present version, oh, it's great in the moment. It's lazy. It negotiates, it makes exceptions, and that's fun for a little while, but then it implodes, it sabotages, it gets deeper and darker where there is no bottom., instead of being the main character in your own life, you become an actor in someone else's, and this is why believing has to stay active for you. Believing is a verb. Beliefs are a noun. Believing is something that you do. Beliefs are an accumulation of everything that you've done. Gotta update it, man. Think about believing as a tool set. And tools are meant to be used. Beliefs are the house where those tools reside. And here's the thing, you can either actively use those tools and use'em for multiple purposes, or you can let 'em sit, collect dust, and become monuments of lost momentum When you use those tools, you're engaging in believing things start to compound. One action leads to another action, and that action reveals new skills, new insights, new clarity, new connections. And sometimes you don't even realize through believing what you're capable of until you put in the work and it shows up just at the right time or at unexpected times. Either way, it's great. Yeah, but if you're not actively believing those tools, they just sit there tools in the shed, stories from the past, proof of what you once were, but no longer are, Don't buy the lie that beliefs are fixed. They're not permanent. They're permeable. They could be shaped. They're fluid. They grow with you, and they should grow with you. But when they don't, when your beliefs get old and you're not actively believing forward, you get stuck looking backwards and you start living one day to the next. One to the next, one year to the next, and the next year looks like a watered down version of last year. Because see, life keeps living. And if you're not actively participating, you're falling behind. You are not bold, you're not courageous, you're not dynamic. You're static, non-functional. So let's look at your life using what I call the blueprint for a full bodied life, the five Fs. Faith, family, which is also relationships, fitness, finances and fulfillment. Professional and creative fulfillment. In what area do you need to shed the old beliefs and update your internal software? Like break each one of them down? In my faith, am I just anchored in old beliefs? Am I believing forward in your family, in your relationships? Do you have your dream spouse, but now you're no longer investing? You have your children, but they're just alone in their room 'cause you're busy working. For them. No, you're not. You're doing it for you hands raised. Okay? I am not. I'm not calling you out. I'm calling me out. Fitness, finances, fulfillment, and what area do you need to shed these old beliefs and update your internal software, man? Are you actively believing forward in all five? This is why I say, man, this is one of the most important episodes I've done. It is call to action. Man. It's a, it's a check in with myself. It's a check in with you, bro. We got so much to be thankful for and there's so much more you gotta ask yourself, man. Are you just checking the box? Talking about I'm good. Because I'm good is one of the most dangerous places to be. It's not growth, it's not belief, it's complacency. And when you're complacent, you're no longer leading your life, you're watching it. So if your story is no longer working, rewrite it. Believing is how you create momentum. Again, it is. And Dude, you could do this instantly. If you start talking about what once were, you're talking about beliefs, shed that fuck all that I'm talking about believing. Brand new narrative. Brand new you, man. It's why today is called present for a reason. It is a gift. Use it. So believing is how you create that momentum again. It is how you build something new from the inside out. And the key to the system is stay simple, stay focused, build forward. Listen to episode 9 28, small steps forward, create a lifestyle, and this is a lifestyle that you're creating. And it's not something you have to vacation from. It's not something you gotta escape from. You just gotta use the tools, the tools that you already have, and keep 'em sharp. And you keep 'em sharp by staying active, by believing forward. Just keep reshaping it. Do not fall for the biggest lie of all, just stay here. You've done enough. It's everybody else's fault, not yours. That's not belief, that's resignation, that's regret. Dressed up as relief. So let me leave you with this. You can change your mind. You can reshape your story. You can believe forward. You don't have to be who you were, and you don't have to stay stuck in who you've been. I beliefs may have got you here, but believing is what's gonna take you to next. Keep it simple. Keep it moving. Never settle and never stop believing. Stay tough. Peace.
