TRANSCRIPT

0:00 Hello and welcome to Mindful in 5, helping you discover your peaceful path. I'm your host Spiwe Jefferson, author of the Mindful in 5 book series.

00:15 Mindful Ninjas, where are you in this moment? Say present because you are present in the moment. If your mind is wandering, gently channel it to be here now. Today our topic is on defining your leadership philosophy. Why do you need one? Because I would suggest that an undefined leadership philosophy is like an untended garden. It grows wild in the minds of your team.

I recently started a new job that I'm really excited about. In so doing, I spent some time thinking about how I want to show up for my colleagues and co workers. I happen to have a team that I lead but you don't have to have direct reports to be a leader. In our journey as leaders, crafting a leadership philosophy is not just an exercise in self expression, but it's a foundation for effective leadership. A leadership philosophy reflects your core values and principles, guiding your actions and decisions. Today, we will explore some examples that will give you ideas, especially focusing on high emotional intelligence or EQ traits. So here's our first example.

Peaceful leadership. Someone with a peaceful leadership philosophy might foster a calm and serene work environment. This philosophy is rooted in maintaining inner peace, which radiates outwardly influencing the team in a positive way. For instance, a peaceful leader might believe in leading with tranquility, ensuring a harmonious and stress free work environment for all. This approach reduces workplace anxiety.

And do you think creativity and productivity are our next example is clear and focused leadership, clarity and focus are crucial in leadership. A leader with this philosophy might say my goal is to lead with clarity and focus, simplifying complex challenges and directing attention to what really matters. This approach is about cutting through the noise, providing clear direction, and staying focused on the objectives, ensuring the team doesn't get lost in distractions.

Supported leadership. A leader who values support might have a philosophy like I commit to creating a nurturing environment where every team member feels valued and supported this kind of leader prioritizes team wellbeing, understanding that a supported team is an empowered team. Such leaders often have high EQ, as they are adept at recognizing and responding to their team's emotional needs. Softer leadership is our next example.

Softer leadership doesn't mean being less effective. It's about being empathetic and approachable. A softer leadership philosophy could be I lead with empathy, kindness, and understanding, valuing each team members perspective. This approach fosters trust and loyalty, making team members feel safe to share their ideas and concerns.

Now, as you can tell by these examples, there probably isn't one of them that you would say, Gosh, I really don't want to be that. So there is no right philosophy, per se. There is just the one that you choose and that is consistent with who you are and resonates with your authentic voice. Incorporating these philosophies in your leadership style requires mindfulness. It's about being present, aware and intentional in your interactions and decisions. And of course, once you define your philosophy, you need to behave in a manner consistent with that philosophy because even if you declare it, your team won't believe what you say as much As they will believe what you do.

To stay rooted in your desired leadership philosophy, consider spending at least five minutes each morning in silent meditation, visualizing how you'll show up each day. If you don't know how to do that, download the simple but powerful feats method specifically developed by Mindful in 5. As a quick guide to get you started. You can also listen to the feets episode for more guidance. I also included a terrific conversation I had with my guest, Rene on mindful leadership, and a couple of other related episodes that I think you will find helpful in the notes for this podcast. As you reflect on these examples, I invite you to craft your own leadership philosophy. Think about what values resonate with you. Are you more inclined towards peaceful leadership or focused leadership? Remember, your philosophy is a reflection of your unique style and vision as a leader.

In conclusion, a leadership philosophy is a powerful tool in enhancing your effectiveness as a leader. It guides your actions influences your team and shapes the overall work culture. As a high EQ leader, your philosophy is not just words on paper, it's a living embodiment of your leadership in action.
