Welcome to In The News for October the 17th, 2025.

I am Brett Burney from appsinlaw.com.

And this is Jeff Richardson from iPhoneJD.

Hey, Brett.

Hi, Jeff.

Happy 800th birthday.

Well, the 800th post, I guess, on iPhoneJD.

I love that that's how you started your post today.

800 In The News posts, Jeff.

That's pretty monumental.

That's a lot of posts.

It's a lot of weeks.

The only reason I even know is because the way that my old blogging platform worked is like I needed to have a unique name for the post so they couldn't all be called something slash in the news.

So I called the first one whatever in the news.

The second one I put slash two and then three, four.

So if it wasn't for that silly thing, I would have no idea what number I was up to.

But, yep, up to 800.

Well, 800 more.

Please.

Let's keep going.

And Apple celebrated your 800th in the news post this week by, I guess, surreptitiously releasing a whole bunch of new hardware, but it's not quite as exciting as it sounds.

We have been talking about the MacBook Pro, which had an M4 processor, the iPad Pro, which also had an M4 processor, and the Apple Vision Pro.

Well, we'll come to that in a moment.

but apple just basically updated those two major devices the macbook pro the ipad pro

from an m4 chip to an m5 chip faster better sleeker slimmer no there's actually no other

changes right other than the chip i mean there's a few minor changes there's a few minor changes

ram and stuff like that but pretty interesting no fanfare just some press releases and hey here's

some new products. Yeah. And I mean, it's good. I mean, we know that just about every year,

Apple is now updating the chips that it develops on its own. So we're now up to the M5 and, you

know, every, you know, it seems like we're far enough away. You know, when that original M1 chip

came out, it was, it was truly revolutionary because it was such a big jump up from the Intel

processors we had been using, you know, plus not only was it more powerful, Apple had the ability

to design the processor that specifically met its need as opposed to just using whatever intel gave

them and so they could be you know more focused on the things that apple devices are good at so it

was better overall and so every year they increase they you know they come up with a new version it's

better what jumps so sometimes apple will do some big revolutionary change to its products and other

times they'll just sort of do a speed bump where it's the same product as before um and then and

And this happens to be more or less a speed bump thing.

One of the things I like is that for at least the last two or three generations now, Apple

has decided we're not just going to put the new chip in the computer, specifically the

laptop computer, because by far most of the Macs that are sold are MacBook Pro or MacBooks,

you know, laptop computers.

But they now consider the iPad Pro to be a first class citizen such that it's going to

get a day in.

In fact, if I remember correctly, when the M4 came out, the iPad Pro got it before anybody

else.

It was first on the iPad 4.

I do remember that.

And then it subsequently came up to the computer.

Now they're doing it on both the computer and the iPad and also the Vision Pro.

We'll get to that in a second.

But so that's great.

You're right that, for example, for the iPad, which is, you know, more near and dear to my heart because I don't happen to use a Mac laptop computer.

It's not just the faster processor.

They also increase the RAM.

This is the same thing that Apple did with the iPhone 17 Pro last month.

And it's good.

I know the reason they're doing it is because they want to put AI on device, and AI is such a suck for RAM that they really need to have the extra overhead.

But I like having extra RAM because it's good for multitasking.

In fact, it's far more useful on an iPad than an iPhone because I'm much more likely to be using multiple apps at one time, especially with the new windowing features of the new operating system.

And so having extra RAM is a nice thing.

I mean, I won't personally take advantage of it on my iPad, but I do love it that because I'm not going to upgrade.

But I do love that, you know, going forward, there's going to be this extra RAM on the iPad, which is better.

So if you are, you know, to sort of wrap it up for the iPad improvements and there's some other small things, too.

Like if you get the version with the modem, you now get the Apple built modem and things like that.

But I mean, the bottom line is that you get a little bit better.

But I mean, I don't mean to belittle it.

A little bit better is better.

You know, there are some tasks that are like 30 percent faster and stuff.

So it's great.

But if you're in the market for an iPad, you now have something latest and greatest.

And what I think the most important thing for me is if you're looking to get a new iPad, you're probably – I mean, if you want the low-end iPad, I don't have much to tell you.

The entry-level iPad is nice.

It's less expensive.

I don't really recommend it, but it is powerful enough that if you're just a casual user, that's fine.

But if you're going to be using your iPad, you know, a little bit more to get work done and for good things at home, it's a really question of do you want the Air, which was updated earlier this year, or do you want the Pro, which was updated, you know, this week?

They're both excellent.

I mean, don't get me wrong.

The Air is a fantastic iPad.

I know a lot of people that love it.

It's great to sort of compare apples and apples at the 256 level, which I think is going to be a good storage capacity for most folks.

It's an extra 300 bucks for the Pro.

And I laid forward in my post what you get more.

I mean, you get the beautiful screen.

I mean, I just cannot say it enough.

The iPad screen, it's the best screen I have.

It looks so fantastic.

So, you know, for me, the screen alone would be a reason to do it.

But but you get some other nice features, too, with the pro.

And so, you know, it's it's do you want to spend that extra money and do you want to get a little bit more oomph if you're going to if you're going to be, you know, just one another example, face ID.

I mean, touch ID is fine.

Nothing wrong with touch ID.

But like I like that I can just look at my iPad and it can unlock and you have face ID with the pro.

You get the more memory.

You get the additional speed.

You know, you get the nicer screen.

It's just a more premium product, but it's not essential.

You can absolutely get tons of work done with an iPad Air.

Save yourself 300 bucks.

Heck, use that money to get the keyboard and the magic keyboard if you want a keyboard.

So, you know, it's, you know, you need to decide.

As always, you pay a little bit more and you get a little bit more.

But the Pro iPad is just a beast.

It is so powerful.

It is so wonderful.

I love my iPad Pro M4 so much.

It's thin.

I mean, it's just so thin in your hand.

It's just light.

It's wonderful.

And to have this same device that's just a little bit better is a big thumbs up.

But if it's too much for you, Air is also really good.

You have the M4.

Are you going to upgrade to the M4?

No, no, no.

And although I did see a couple of people online saying, oh, yeah, I'm going to upgrade from my M4 to my M5.

You know, if you want, you know, I'm not going to stop anybody from doing whatever they want.

But it's not enough of an upgrade for me.

I don't upgrade my iPad, you know, with every generation because they're just so good.

They were so good.

Yeah.

Well, that's what I was saying.

You know, I think the bigger story here is sort of buried.

It is, I mean, obviously they bumped it up with this M5, but Jeff, I think the M1 chip came out five years ago.

You were talking about that and discussing that.

And I remember we were recording during that time and we were talking about this, well, not during that time,

but we have been talking about the fact that that M1 chip is such a revolution in computing processing

because I remember I got that first M1 MacBook Pro,

and I think I used it for almost three and a half years,

and I would have continued to use it,

but I upgraded about five months ago to this M4 MacBook Pro,

which is what I'm actually using right now,

and it just continues to blow me away still.

I remember that M1.

It's like this is incredible.

I've never seen a computer or a consumer product act like the way that it acted

and just so responsive,

And the M4 was just even better.

I know the M5 will be even better.

And it's just this idea that they, I don't know that people, I guess, common people that

are not quite as nerdy as we are, realize what these M5 chips and these M chips that

Apple has started putting in really means for the world of computing.

I mean, there is nothing that can really compare to it today.

And I just want to reemphasize that.

And then quickly going to the iPad, I still have my 12.9 iPad Pro, which I believe is the first that came out with an M1 chip.

And to your point, I don't feel the need to upgrade.

Now, I looked at your screen.

I like your screen.

It's much better.

It's a little bit lighter with this new, you know, when the M4 iPad Pro came out.

But I'm just saying, like, my iPad Pro is still fantastic with an M1 chip.

And that is just incredible to me that I don't truly feel that need.

And we've talked about this with the iPad over the years that, you know, that's an issue for Apple in a way because people don't feel the need to upgrade all the time.

But it's amazing that I have that much computing power and I still can continue to enjoy that even without feeling that absolute need to upgrade to an M5.

I'll give you another data point on that.

My home computer, which for many, many years was an iMac, and sometimes I still think I have an iMac because it looks essentially the same.

But I had been using, you know, one of the latest iMacs with the Intel processors.

and then I finally decided to make the change to the Apple M processors.

And so a few years ago, I got the one that I use.

It's an M2.

It's an M2 Pro, so it's a nicer version of the M2, but it's an M2 Pro.

It's a Mac Mini, and I have the Apple Studio display with it.

And because the Mac Mini is so tiny, when I look at it, it's sort of just like it's an

iMac because you're just looking at the screen.

But that M2 Pro, which I've been using for a while now, it's still really good.

I mean, literally just last night, I've been working with some video projects because I

I had reviewed a while ago, Legacy Box to digitize a bunch of eight millimeter films.

And I'm so good.

I'm going through them and processing.

But I have like these.

And again, these are smaller.

This is not HD.

You know, this is not 4K video.

But even though they're small video, I'm using Final Cut Pro to do some things with them to like remove noise and stuff.

You know, some filters or some things that they are processor intensive.

And don't get me wrong.

It's not instantaneous, but it is still so fast that like when I see what my computer is doing and how fast it's doing it with that M2 Pro processor, I'm like, that is amazing.

And sure, I'd love for it to be faster.

Don't get me wrong.

I'm sure if I swapped it out for an M5, I'd be even happier.

But I know what it was like to work on video files with my former Intel processors.

And it was tell the computer to do something, go to sleep, wake up the next morning.

You know, it was that's what it was.

Go have lunch.

Right.

And now I can sit there.

If I don't mind waiting 10 seconds, I can wait.

And, you know, so it's incredible.

And so, yes, the M5 is better than the M4, better than the M3, better than the M2.

But this whole processor family is so good.

Of course, I'm thrilled that Apple continues to push it.

And, of course, they don't just make it faster.

I mean, for example, with the M5, one of the things that they're doing is they know that

AI is a big thing.

And so part of the M5 is an improved neural processor, which is the reason that Apple

says that for some AI tasks, it's actually 30% faster than the M4.

So it's not just that the whole thing is faster, which used to be sort of what Intel would do.

The main thing, the main changes they had year to year was just make it faster.

They are making it faster in specific ways.

So like this one has better GPUs, better neural engines for AI tasks.

So there are some areas where some people with some tasks would notice a real advantage of the M5 or the M4.

And that's what you expect.

And I'm sure next year the M6 will focus on something else.

But anyway, nice new processors. Nice to have it. I guess I should mention, too, that I have an M2 Pro on my home computer. Apple only announced the M5 this week. They have not yet announced M5 Pro, M5 Max, M5, you know, you love it, whatever. Who knows what other things? And I presume that's going to come out in the spring.

Right now, if you are a MacBook Pro user, the one that's out right now, the MacBook Pro M5, the brand new one, it's just sort of like, it's still a MacBook Pro.

So it's still a workhorse.

And for a lot of people, it's more computer that they need.

The MacBook Air may be more than enough for them or just a MacBook.

But if you want to have a MacBook Pro, this might be a good model for you.

But if you really want the latest and greatest, you might want to wait a few months because I expected in the spring they will have a MacBook Pro M5 Pro or other things.

Yeah, John Voorhees in this article that you'll link to here, it is just the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

True, too.

It is not the Mac Studio.

And John Voorhees says he would love to.

Like, why?

Like, if their M5 can be put into the MacBook Pro, why not go ahead and put it into the Mac Studio?

Or, you know, the Mac Mini or, you know, something else along those lines.

And, you know, we don't know.

Apple has their reasons, I'm sure.

But it is just that model of the MacBook Pro right now that's available with the M5 chip.

And the iPad Pro with the M5 chip.

And something else got an M5 chip.

That would be the Vision Pro, which I got to tell you, when I read this and I thought about it for a second, I'm like, oh, no.

Jeff still has the M2 Vision Pro.

Surely they'll let him upgrade that or trade it in or something.

And it doesn't look like Apple's going to let you do that.

I read somebody, someone else was mentioning that.

It's like, come on, Apple, give me a break.

Like we dropped all this cash for an M2.

I would love, I bet you would love to have an M5 Vision Pro.

You should take it to Apple though, Jeff.

Maybe.

I mean, first of all, there is no upgrade path yet.

But I say the word yet because just because Apple didn't announce it week one doesn't mean it's not going to come out in a few weeks.

You know, they probably only have so many demand right now.

Let the people that just want to buy it outright get it first.

And then maybe in a month they'll say.

But if they do have an upgrade program, and when I say upgrade, I mean just the same thing we do with our iPhones.

I mean I turned in my iPhone 16 Pro Max to get my brand new iPhone 17 Pro Max.

And Apple gave me $700, which I thought was pretty good.

I forget how much I paid a year ago.

But I mean, that was probably more than half price or something like that.

I thought it was a reasonable trade-in value.

I have no idea what kind of trade-in value they would do.

I mean, my Vision Pro cost $3,500 when I bought it.

It was even more because I got extra RAM.

So I don't know what kind of trade-in value they would have.

And because the Vision Pro is so expensive, I seriously doubt for me that I would upgrade.

You know, having, as we were just discussing, an M5 processor is better than an M2 processor.

So for some things, it would be faster.

You know, if you have some immersive environments where you use an app that is doing all sorts of crazy calculations to make this world around you, then I can see having an M5 being a real advantage.

But I suspect for me, I'm going to be totally fine with my current one.

I was actually more interested, to tell you the truth, not in the new processor, but in the new, the band, because it's always been.

Yeah, you want it to be as comfortable as possible in your head because the Vision Pro is a little bit more heavy.

And with my head shape, it's actually always been fine.

But I had reviewed maybe, gosh, a year ago now, this band that Belkin makes, which just in addition to having the thing around the back of my head, it goes over the top of my head.

And it makes a little difference.

I like it.

But now Apple has something that's an even better on the top band.

It's like, you know, the same sort of stretchy fabric that you can adjust with the dial that goes around the back of your head.

Now you can see from the picture you're showing on your screen, it's also on the top of your head.

And I presume it's more comfortable.

Plus, it's not just a band.

They actually have some counterweights in it.

to try to counterweight the back of the band with the front.

So, I mean, Apple has had, what, two years now

to think about how can we make a better, more comfortable band?

And this is what they came out with.

And although it comes with the new Vision Pro,

you can also buy it separately for a hundred bucks.

And I did buy it or I pre-ordered it.

We'll see it comes out in a couple of weeks.

So hopefully it'll be more comfortable.

So that'll be nice.

And some other things they came out with too,

some other accessories for the Vision Pro,

like this Logitech Muse,

which is like this mouse you could use to draw in air.

I don't think I'd be using that.

And if you're a big gamer,

they now work with PlayStation controllers.

So there's some other announcements for the Vision Pro too.

But most importantly, I'm just happy that Apple's still pushing forward the Vision Pro

and moving to the next.

It's an incremental change, but it's a nice incremental change.

Exactly.

Like there was no other changes in this, right?

They didn't improve the battery.

They didn't improve the RAM or they didn't improve some of the lenses or anything.

All they really did was just put in the upgraded M5 processor.

I mean, maybe they made some additional tweaks inside, obviously, that they're not necessarily sharing.

But that's it.

Like, it was just a better processor, which I'm not complaining about.

It's just like, come on.

Like, is that it?

I mean, other than the band, I mean, thank you.

But come on.

But as we just discussed, that's basically what Apple did with the MacBook Pro and the iPad.

You know, it's just a speed bump.

So, you're right.

Not every change is going to be revolutionary.

This one's not.

But at least they did it.

Because if they hadn't done it, a lot of us would be sitting around wondering, you know, gosh, is Apple going to ever do anything with the Vision Pro?

Well, you're a better man than I am because if I had bought an M2 Vision Pro and you linked to this other story from Mac Room and Hartley Charlton talking about the M2 Vision Pro is not available for trading.

Knowing that there was an M5 out there, I would be a little upset.

I would be, come on, give me some kind of a break.

But as Hartley mentions here, the absence of the Vision Pro from Apple's trade-in program is a little peculiar, but likely reflects an unwillingness on the behalf of trade-in partners to accept it for now.

I disagree with that statement.

Oh, really?

Okay.

Yeah.

I mean, he may be right.

You know, what he's saying is nobody wants an older model.

I disagree with that.

I think that people always want an older Apple model.

And so I truly believe that in a month or two, Apple is going to start.

But again, maybe I'm wrong and maybe he's right.

We'll see.

Time will tell.

Time will tell.

We'll see if that happens, and then I would be happier for you on your behalf, I guess.

Like, come on, Apple, you can do this.

Well, that's not all that Apple announced this week.

A little bit of an odd bit of news that I just saw was all over, not just in the regular tech blogs that we follow, but, man, the headlines made everywhere.

Apple TV Plus is no longer Plus.

I feel like we should explain this, and everybody's had to explain this, because there's an Apple TV, which is the actual piece of hardware, right?

Then there's Apple TV+, which has been the service where all these great shows, Ted Lasso, Severance, all of these shows come from, and that has been separate.

But people will always get confused because we would just say Apple TV.

Like, hey, you watching that on Apple TV?

Hardly anybody would say Apple TV+, unless it's you and me talking to each other.

So Apple, I guess, felt like it was important enough.

They wanted to remove the plus to remove some of the additional confusion.

So now we have Apple TV, which Apple TV?

It's like back down to the South.

When I grew up in Texas, it was like, I want a Coke.

And they would say, well, what kind of Coke do you want?

Do you want Sprite?

Do you want a Dr. Pepper?

Do you want a Pepsi?

No.

Yeah.

Yeah.

I want a Coke.

But so now it's Apple TV.

Well, which Apple TV?

Is it the service?

Is it the product?

this is going to get a little crazy but probably in two months you know it's just going to be

uh par for the course i'm guessing yeah plus there's the app like if they're on your iphone

or your ipad there's an app thank you it's called i mean technically it's the tv app not the apple tv

app but it's all so close to each other but again who's going to call that who's going to know

if you're not you know drowning in this kind of stuff every day it's like you're just going to

say apple tv and it's like okay well i'm talking about the app you're talking about so you know

if you want to be technical brett the thing that connects to your television it's not it used to

Apple TV. It's technically now called the Apple TV 4k, but you know, whatever. So that's, it's

like, so our wives are not going to care about that. Right. They're just going to say, are we

going to watch Apple TV? And it's like, okay, well, it's an Apple TV. It's like, that's it on

the Apple TV on the Apple TV. The funniest part of the story for me this week was the way that

Apple announced this because Apple releases, you know, Apple releases, press releases all the time,

and they have a separate part of their website that has press releases for their streaming shows.

And so they had a press release this week announcing that the F1 movie, which we're going to talk about in a second, that it's coming to the service.

And at the very bottom, in like one of the last sentences, it says, oh, and by the way, Apple TV Plus is now called Apple TV.

We're like, what?

What?

What?

Hello?

So it's funny that they just sort of slip it in there.

It's the second to last.

There you go.

You got it.

Just above the about Apple TV, they had the paragraph.

Apple TV Plus is now simply Apple TV with a vibrant new identity.

Vibrant.

I think vibrant new identity means that they've got like a little bit of a gradient blur on the logo now.

But it's anyway, they just sort of dropped it in there and people are like, excuse me.

So anyway, but, you know, it makes sense.

I mean, as people, everybody called it Apple TV anyway.

It's less of a, you know, and saying the plus, although we've gotten used to it, is a little bit of a mouthful.

You know, if I'm going to go watch a, you know, the Alien Earth show, which I just finished watching, I'm going to tell you I was watching a Disney or I was watching a Hulu.

I'm not going to say Disney Plus, even though technically there is a plus in there.

So, you know, Apple is just reflecting the times.

But anyway, you're right.

And it's the same.

Just like you saw many people talking about this.

You know, we don't say Disney Plus all the time.

And I think they may be rebranding.

You know, it was Max and it was HBO Max.

And now we're back to HBO Max.

HBO is the worst of all those three names.

I feel like Apple is just kind of getting into like, okay, we're trying to find our footing a little bit more with the streaming, even though that's a little ridiculous to say because they've been around for so long now.

But, I mean, they are, I think, making a solid footing here.

It's just it is going to be a little confusing.

And this other story you linked to from Jason Snell was like, should we call the Apple TV 4K, the hardware piece, the little black box, should we call that something different?

I think he was talking about HomePod or something else in there.

I mean, I don't know. I feel like this is just going to compound the confusion if we just keep going on this.

Let's just call it all Apple TV.

And I think at some point, and some people were speculating, I mean, this is maybe Apple trying to consolidate everything so that it's just on that one.

So it's all Apple TV, and that becomes the major hub.

I mean, I feel like they've already kind of made some directions in that way.

So anyway, we'll just see.

It was just so funny.

Like you said, it was like the last sentence here.

Vibrant new identity without giving us the idea of what the identity is going to be.

But I guess we'll just wait to see.

I do feel like they've got some plans.

Like this has got to go somewhere, I think.

It's just we don't know yet all the way.

Yeah.

You know, way back when, when the original hardware device was originally announced,

do you remember that it wasn't called the Apple TV?

It was actually called the ITV.

And then it turned out that there was a trademark dispute or, you know,

some sort of intellectual property because there's a service.

I think it's a service in Britain that's called ITV.

and they said, you can't use that name.

And so then they changed it to Apple TV.

That was a long time ago.

Sure enough.

Yeah, it's a British free-to-air public broadcast.

Oh, that is so interesting.

But it's not, yeah, it couldn't be.

I do remember that now, the iTV,

because that would follow along with the iMac and the iPod.

Yeah, back to you now.

Apple doesn't use that naming convention anymore,

but they used to, yeah.

So interesting.

Well, let's talk about a completely different piece of hardware.

You linked today that in 2018, the U.S. Mint began releasing American innovation dollars.

We don't really follow a lot of the coin collecting news here on this podcast, but there is an Apple twist to this.

I don't even I didn't even know about these, you know, just because it's not something that I that I go around in.

But, man, look at all of these.

So each state apparently has had a coin issued.

And sometimes they have something special that is spotlighted on here.

And the story is that in 2026, California is going to have an American innovation coin.

And it's going to have Steve Jobs on it.

Pretty cool.

When I was a kid, like one of my grandparents had given me for my brother to for Christmas present,

We had like one of these books that you can get that you collect coins in.

And so like we had like for the quarters and for nickels and pennies.

And it was sort of fun that like as a kid, you would find loose change and you would try to find like, you know, the 1976 Denver Mint penny or whatever it was to like fill in your little book.

And so I had an interest in coin collecting when I was a kid.

And sometimes we would even go to like the little pawn shop and, you know, for the I liked collecting pennies because you could buy like a really rare penny for like 50 cents, you know.

And so I could actually afford that.

But the quarter collection, if you wanted to buy a rare quarter, that was too expensive for my blood when I was a little kid.

But anyway, I've always had some interesting coin collecting.

And I remember when these American Innovations coins came out.

I remember the Louisiana one, for example, because that sort of made the news here that it was for the Higgins boat.

And like I think one of the states has like the light bulb that was invented, Edison.

And, you know, they're nice little coins, commemorative coins.

And I haven't actually seen one in person, but I have read about it.

And I guess in theory it's worth a dollar.

but I think if you buy it from the mint, you have to buy it and spend a little bit more money to get

it. Maybe you get it in bulk or something. But, um, but the Steve, you know, some of these coins

commemorate a specific person. Most of them commemorate a specific, uh, innovation, like an

idea. Um, in fact, I see right there at Tennessee is the Tennessee Valley authority, which is, you

know, that was pretty innovative at the time though. I remember studying with that, but it's,

it's not like a, uh, not like a technology sort of, I guess it is technology in a way of its time,

But anyway, interesting stuff. Now, Kentucky is Kentucky bluegrass. Is that an innovation?

I see that. They've got like a diagonal banjo on this.

Yeah. Oh, OK. So I guess it's bluegrass music and innovation.

Sure. That works. Yeah, I guess that makes sense.

So we got some interesting innovations.

Snowboarding. There you go.

North Carolina is higher education. I mean, there are a lot of schools in North Carolina.

So that's an interesting one to pick.

But for California, obviously, with Silicon Valley, they had all sorts of techie things that they could have picked.

And and I say they I don't know if the state had anything to do with it or it was just the U.S. Mint that decided.

But Steve Jobs will be the one for California.

I see Minnesota is going to be mobile refrigeration, which is really exciting.

We all we all want to have our mobile refrigeration.

You know, I feel like if you started collecting these, I mean, when it started in 2018, if you started, it's like you want to finish this.

And I don't know if this is what you were talking about, but I do remember when I was a kid and you've got to remember this.

you just alluded to it, the quarters started coming out, right?

With all the different States. And I remember when they first started coming out,

I started collecting because it's like, that was the cool thing to do.

And then it kind of lost count and it kind of got lost in everything else that

was going on. But, you know, I don't know. These are,

these are actually pretty fun. I mean,

to have a complete collection whenever they finish here, I mean, they've got it.

What are we on now? 29 out of 50.

No 57 because it's like, I think six territories.

They have American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico.

Yeah.

Northern Mariana Islands.

Okay.

That's really cool.

It's actually pretty nifty.

And I like the fact that Steve Jobs is going to take one as well.

Of course, nowadays, I really don't use coins anymore.

I barely use bills anymore because everything is electronic.

But, you know, hey, why not have some cool coins?

Well, you can take a picture of the coin, maybe with a selfie.

This is an interesting story that you linked to today.

What is this?

The Indian BW Business World, right?

Yeah, it's an Indian public.

It's a magazine in India.

They have a website as well.

But one of their reporters got the interview with Apple.

Yeah.

Like an exclusive interview with John McCormack,

which I don't think we hear very much from John McCormack.

He joined apparently in 2018 from Queensland.

And he just looks like a mad scientist.

I mean, they even talk about this.

I'm thrilled that somebody that looks like that is working in Apple

and working on cameras because he looks like he just has to come up

and really cool, but kind of an interesting interview here. Yeah. I mean, he looks like

an interesting photographer and apparently he is a big photographer and one of his hobbies is doing

photography too. But this is the guy that's in charge of, I think it's both hardware and software

at Apple photography, which means what a huge part of the company right now, because for so many

people, the iPhone is your camera. And so it's a fun interview where, I mean, I talked about the

selfies part. That's not the only thing he talks about. He talks about all the new cameras on the

new devices, but the selfie part was interesting. I mean, they allude to the fact that when Apple

had its announcement this year, they said that, you know, 16,000 selfie photos are taken every

second, every second. Okay. It's been a couple of seconds since I said that, and we've already had

tens of thousands more selfies that were taken. It's crazy. But I tell you what, this new, this

new selfie camera is really interesting. I'm not, I don't use the selfie camera a lot, but I've been

using it more over the last month because it's really nice that you can like hold it out and

it'll automatically expand to fill people or if you want to manually do it you can tap it and i

will tell you i love i really i i'm not a fan of portrait size photos with very uh limited

circumstances if i'm actually taking a portrait photo like i was taking a photo of my daughter

recently for her for her yearbook coming up yeah you want those to be portrait size but normally

i want my pictures to be landscape because my ipad is landscape my computer screens are landscape

And I love that I can now hold my iPhone in the portrait position, which is where you have a better grip on your hand and take that picture.

He points out in his article, and this is so true, that like he's like, we used to always see people, you know, you'd have your iPhone up like this and then you'd want to get more people in the picture.

And so you would turn it.

But like now it's like you're almost in an awkward position and you can't really touch the button.

And it hurts the quality of your picture.

But now you can just hold that iPhone in your hand in the way that makes sense.

But yet your picture could still be landscape.

I think this was such a smart decision.

And so he talks about that a lot.

And I also pointed in here, I didn't even know this until he said in the article, I put this in my post today, that he says that people are doing a better job looking at the picture.

Because when your phone was in landscape mode, you know how the camera was over here on the side.

I always tell people, look at the dot, look at the dot.

Yeah, look at the dot.

Whereas when it's when your phone's upright, everybody's looking towards the center, which I think, OK, that's an interesting little thing.

You know, of course, he would be such a detail oriented person when it comes to photographs and he would know that.

So that's another reason you get even better selfie photos with this new camera.

And then he also talks about the back cameras, too.

You know, Apple puts a ton, a ton of time and resources and energy and money into making the cameras better every year.

And this year, once again, they have done it.

They are better cameras.

I mean, just before we started the podcast today, Brett, I sent you a picture of yesterday,

I was looking out the window in my office and I was looking at the Mississippi River

Bridge, which crosses here in New Orleans.

And it was a really, really foggy day.

And so the fog was low in the sky and like I was above the clouds and I was using the

4X camera on my iPhone 17 Pro Max.

I was able to get a really cool picture of just the Mississippi River Bridge, like closer

than ever before.

And it was a cool picture.

And I'm like, I love this lens.

It's really cool.

And of course I could take a really cool 8X picture too.

Nice job.

Can I just add quickly on this with taking the pictures?

Do you know, I upgraded to the 17 Pro from a 15 Pro,

which means that I skipped the 16 Pro that came out with the camera side button down there.

Oh, this is your first time.

Yeah.

This is the first time.

And I'm still trying to change my muscle memory because I still have the camera button on the lock screen.

And I'm like, why do I have that there when it's so easy to hit the side button?

And having that, in addition to having this selfie portrait selfie mode and being able to hold it and use my thumb on the side there has been quite revolutionary.

I have to tell you, that has been great.

You know, I kind of poo-pooed this when it came out in the 16 because I'm like, well, I'm not upgrading.

So I don't care about it because I don't have a side camera button.

But that has really become amazing.

Like I said, I'm still trying to, you know, tweak my muscle memory because it's like I usually try to, you know, turn it on.

And then I'm like, I want to capture that real quick.

So I have to unlock it and go to the camera sometimes or tap and hold on the camera button on the lock screen.

And I'm like, wait a minute.

I don't need to.

I can just double tap on that camera side button.

And I feel like that having the side button in conjunction with this new selfie camera option that I can go into this and into the landscape mode, that is pretty amazing.

It's very subtle, I feel like, you know, but I just reading between the lines is something that I felt was important looking at this little interview there as well.

Yeah, I've been using that button for a year now, and so I'm pretty familiar with it.

Having said that, I still have the camera button on my home screen.

And so I agree with you.

It seems like it's repetitive and duplicative, and it is.

But I just have such muscle memory of pressing that button there that I took it off for a while.

And I was like, nothing else that I put there did I use as much as the camera button.

So oftentimes I will still press it.

Having said that, I also love the fact that I can just be holding my camera up like that and press right there.

And I just did it.

And now I'm taking your picture.

Or you can hold it in portrait mode, right?

Or you can hold it in portrait mode.

And then your thumb is right there on the button.

I'm just saying like, I'm getting used to that.

And it really is a pretty good game changer.

Other than the fact that I'm picking it up now and accidentally hitting the camera button

because I just didn't remember that I, you know, the 15, I didn't have to worry about

it, but now I kind of punch it.

Of course, you have to double click it to get into the camera mode.

So it works out okay, but it's just getting used to all of that.

What I'll be curious to get your feedback on, Brett, is, you know, one of the real advantages

of it is that you have that button that you can always press and you can instantly get

to the camera mode.

That part, huge thumbs up for me.

The second part of it is that because it's touch sensitive, you can slide to change settings

or you can tap to change modes.

I do like that setting because I will often use it as a quick and easy way to zoom in and

out.

So if I'm sitting there taking a picture, I can, you know, press the button to get into

the mode and I can zoom and I can get like a little closer to you and a little further out.

And so now I'm at 4X, now I'm at AX. I can really see you really big right now. But I will tell you

that I have sometimes mixed feelings on it because another thing that it does is allows you to switch

modes between like styles and F stops and all those sort of stuff. I don't use that very much.

And in fact, as I'm saying this out loud, I believe there's actually a setting. I need to

to look for this, that I can turn it off, that I use it so infrequently that I probably accidentally

trigger the mode issues more than I purposefully trigger it. So I think there's a setting that I

can change it, that the only thing it will do is go between the different lens sizes,

because I do use that, you know, 1X, 2X, 4X, 8X. And I may do that in the future. But enough people

were confused about that feature, that when you install iOS 26 for the first time on your phone,

you actually get a choice and this is something brand new that apple did they didn't have this

before they ask you do you want the camera control button to just launch the app or do you also want

it to be able to switch modes and i think for a lot of people the switching modes part was a little

too fumbly for them and i and i don't disagree with that i totally understand that so um you know

i'll be curious to see since it's brand new for you brett after you've been using it for three

months four months you know do you like having all the power do you just want to use it as a launch

the camera app because different people have different opinions on that well i like it because

not only can you switch between the what i would call like you know the zoom functions like 0.5 or

1 2x 4x 8x but if you keep going and i'm just i'm just barely moving my thumb up and down on this

button right that's what you're talking about it's just this the i can slide my thumb up and down

but if you keep going above the 0.5 then it immediately goes into the selfie mode and so i

I do like that, that I can just quickly, quickly get into that. Now I haven't done it to where I, that, that's, that's the extent of it. Like I don't click, I think you can tap it again or click it again so that you can go into maybe video versus something else. But I don't know here, I'm raising my hand again on this. Sorry.

but um i i i i like the idea that i can switch and and just quickly like swipe my thumb up and down

so that it can go between those two uh those different focus modes on there but i don't know

is there a way like you and i gotta we gotta figure this out because so i just did it yeah

yeah so i can switch i do like quickly i'll just say this instead of just clicking it once for a

camera if you click and hold then it automatically does video and i like that i've been able to do

that because that's a very quick way to get into video mode. So that doesn't have to mean that I

switch back and forth between photo and video. So I do like that as well, but I think that was default

anyway. What I've just done is if you go into the settings up on your iPhone and you go under camera

at the very top, there's the very first settings for camera control and you can control what happens

with that. You can do it single click, double click. Do you want require screen on, which means

you're not going to accidentally turn the camera on when it's in your pocket, if you touch that

button. But one of the things that you can do is under the controls, there's this thing that says

customize and you can say what happens when I use the controls and you can say there's there's six

different options exposure depth zoom camera style tone as we were talking I just turned off everything

except for zoom because that's the one that I use 90% of the time anyway and I'm that I think I'm

gonna I'm gonna try this out for a month or so I think I'm gonna prefer this because that way I'm

not gonna accidentally start changing the style or the exposure or the tone because I don't really

do that i do that sometimes but i do it rarely enough that i can do it you can always just do

it within the camera app you don't have to use the button for that and so i think i'm going to change

those within the app and the only thing i'm going to change is zoom and i'm going to see how i like

that but oh i also at the very bottom there clean preview because right now when you go into the

camera app at least from that button you don't see any of the other settings but if you turn that off

when you go into the camera then all of the settings will be available some people might

Oh, yeah, look at that.

I kind of like the clean preview, though.

I do like it without it.

But for folks that do want to fiddle with something as they're getting in, I like that.

I was just going to that page.

I saw that.

That's neat.

All sorts of cool settings.

If you are in the market for a Rivian car, you can kiss CarPlay goodbye.

This is a nice little article from our friend David Sparks.

He just finally got a Rivian car.

He goes, I'm a little embarrassed by it.

I remember many years ago, I was at a conference with David and he was talking with somebody and

they just talked about getting like a BMW cars and Mercedes or something. He's like,

I'm still driving a Ford focus. I've got to put kids through school. And so when I saw this,

I laughed with that memory as well. He loves everything about the car, except there is no

car play. And I think that's the same, maybe for Tesla as well. And he gets it. We've talked,

you and I've talked about this many times, you know, Rivian wants to make their own system.

They want to do something that they are going to claim is better than CarPlay.

But at the very end here, he says what I knew.

I could have guessed this coming, not because I know David's wife so much, but because I know my wife.

He's like, my non-geek wife understands CarPlay and uses it all the time, but it frustrates her when she gets in the Rivian.

She has no clue how to get directions or play her music.

That is the problem for me, Jeff.

Yeah.

I didn't mention this when I linked to it, but I'm actually thinking about maybe getting a new car because I'm driving an old Honda Accord.

And so, of course, I'm interested in an electric car.

And so, you know, I wish I've always purchased Honda Accord cars.

I wish Honda just made a really good electric car.

But the ones that they have, I'm not sure that any of them appeal to me that much.

So I've been thinking about what I want.

The Rivians are nice.

I tell you what, when I went to I have a brother in law that lives in Texas.

And I went out there last year when my son and I went to go see the solar eclipse.

And we were driving around in his Rivian and it is a very nice electric car.

Like, seriously, it's nice.

But my one thing, I mean, that was, this was just me driving around.

It doesn't have CarPlay and I would miss that.

And I understand what David Sparks says.

I mean, if you don't have CarPlay, you get some features.

I mean, you can still do Apple Music, but like, I'm not going to be able to use my,

my overcast app on my iPhone to listen to podcasts.

I'm not going to be able to get the seamlessly get text messages and stuff.

And I suspect, you know, as I'm, you know, thinking about maybe getting a car in the next couple of months, maybe, I don't think I'm going to consider anything that doesn't have CarPlay.

And when it comes to electric vehicles, that eliminates some of the big ones.

It eliminates all the GM vehicles that are new.

It eliminates the Tesla, which I probably wouldn't get anyway, but it eliminates the Rivian.

So it's an issue.

It really is an issue.

I see both sides here, but as a car manufacturer, I just, I cannot fathom why you would not allow, even, you know, put it, bury it somewhere, the setting, but just allow people that want to use this to use it.

I just do not understand how you could be a little blind to it.

I mean, I get it from a marketing perspective.

You want to put your own systems in there.

I understand that.

You want to capture all the data.

I get all of that.

I understand why, but I just, I don't think that's going to be successful in the long run.

I can't, I can't see it being successful now quickly.

I will say, I think I mentioned this a few weeks ago.

I went and visited my mother in Texas and I actually rented for the first time an electric

car, an electric vehicle.

That's right.

It was a Volvo C30, I think, or C40, something like that.

And it did support car play.

I was nervous about this because I knew that some electric vehicles do not, but I was thrilled

to know that it did support it.

And it actually did a fantastic job.

Of course, it had a really big screen on there.

And it was great because I even started using, I think the app is called PlugShare or the

service is PlugShare so that I could find where I needed to go to actually charge the electric

car.

And that was an app that I downloaded on my iPhone.

I didn't go to the Volvo systems.

I didn't really honestly trust it on there or the mapping system from Volvo, but I did

absolutely trust what was on my CarPlay.

So anyway, just interesting thing.

But sorry, David, you're without CarPlay there.

If anybody listening to this podcast owns an electric vehicle that supports CarPlay and they like their electric vehicle, please reach out to me.

Send me an email.

I'd love to get your recommendation.

Also, if you are in the market for finding Apple vulnerabilities, let Apple know.

This is great.

We've talked about the security bounty program.

Wow, it just really sounds cool.

But this is a real thing.

people try to find vulnerabilities in Apple systems.

This is where a lot of the quote zero day exploits come from is because people find them

and they hopefully are able to go to Apple first and let them know about it before they

just kind of release it into the wild.

But Apple has had a security bounty program for a while and they could potentially give

you a million dollars, $1 million.

That wasn't enough though.

They are now offering up to $2 million if you find something and let Apple know about it.

Yeah, two things that strike me interesting.

First of all, I still remember when Apple did not have a security bounty program.

It's probably been a decade, I'm going to guess.

But for a long time, Apple was like, you know, we're not going to pay people to break our system.

And then they got smart and said, well, that's silly because there are a lot of third parties that will pay big bucks for these good hacks.

Because whether they're, you know, a company that sells a product or maybe nation states that want to be able to break into phones, and they would pay big bucks.

And so it was, you know, whenever it was that Apple first announced the program, I was like, well, that's really smart.

And I'm sure that they, and not everybody gets a million dollars, but, you know, they pay you more depending upon the nature of the severity of the hack that you find that they can fix.

But the fact that Apple has now increased it from 1 million to 2 million, what that shows you is that the people that want to purchase these hacks for less honorable reasons, that just tells you what the market is.

That for a while now, I guess people are saying, why would I only give it to Apple for a million dollars when there's that company that's based in Israel that you often hear about police departments using?

The name of it's for me right now.

but uh you know they often buy hacks and you know i'm sure that they spend more than a million

dollars if somebody comes up with a with a really big hack and so i guess apple had to respond to

the market i mean i suspect you could still probably get more than two million dollars by

selling to somebody else but what what i think apple wants you to say is you know maybe you won't

get the most money if you sell to us but you'll feel a little bit better about yourself we're

we're going to give you some support because they do actually note on their website who's who reports

these things so you get a little notoriety and if you're in the business you know that this is

probably good for you that you can report to companies that might want to hire you. Oh,

here's here's Apple giving me credit. So, you know, and it's a cat and mouse game. Every time

Apple support improves the security others. I don't want to say the bad guys, because sometimes

there are white hat hackers that do this for good reasons. But, you know, that people are really

smart and they will find some way to break into it. And it is a cat and mouse game. You know,

gosh, I tell you, working for a law firm, you know, we know that every day there are bad guys

that are trying to break into law firms.

They want to get into your email

because they know that we have confidential information.

They know that we deal with financial transactions,

that they can try to convince somebody

to change the routing instructions for a bank

and send it to them instead of who it's supposed to go to.

It is an ever-present issue.

It's the sort of thing that sometimes keeps me up at night

because it's such an issue.

And so I know what Apple is going through.

They want to sell safe devices.

And I think part of the reason that,

part of the way you do that

is you have a security bounty program

to encourage the people that find these holes to come to you and not someone else.

Let's do a quick in the show segment.

If you have been wanting to see the F1 movie and hadn't had a chance to go to the theaters,

Apple's Eddie Q says that it's coming to Apple TV, not Apple TV Plus.

It's coming to Apple TV on December the 12th, which that'd be cool.

I'll look forward to getting that at that point.

So I'll tell you what I'm particularly looking forward to for this.

We talked about the Apple Vision Pro earlier today, and we also talked about this deal being

announced.

This is such a great movie that I enjoyed seeing on a big IMAX screen with my son.

We loved it.

And on an Apple Vision Pro, I love watching movies on the Vision Pro, but some services

like the Disney Plus service, for example, it doesn't matter what the aspect ratio of

the movie, they always put it in the same 16, nine, which means you sometimes have black

bars, which is silly because in a vision pro a window can be any size. It's like the new iPads.

You could make, you can make a window any size. And so why would you ever have a black bar?

I hope that Apple is going to do this right. I hope that Apple is going to release a version

of this movie through its Apple TV service for the vision pro that has the IMAX aspect ratio.

That's really big. And we will see. And again, I realized there's probably, you know, a tiny

percentage of people in the world that care about this. Like I do that even own a vision pro they

care about the F1 movie, but I want them to do it the right way, not only because it'll be good for

this movie, but it will indicate to me that Apple understands what makes the Vision Pro different,

and they want to have the best possible viewing experience. Just like, you know, you could go see

the F1 movie in a regular theater, and I'm sure it was a great movie, but if you spent a little bit

more and watched it in an IMAX theater, you had better sound, you had better image, and so I'm

hoping that Apple will recognize this. Also interesting that Eddie announced, I'm sure you

saw this that this is the it's now the top grossing sports movie of all time so you know i guess i

guess i don't know what the other ones were rocky maybe with sylvester stallone who knows but you

know this is now the number one um sports movie so interesting on a quick related note jason snell

speculates that apple is going to announce something that they're going to have the exclusive

U.S. broadcast rights to F1 racing, that would be pretty amazing.

I think you got your link here to your Feedly instead of...

Oh, it's the wrong one.

I'll have to fix that.

But yeah, it's...

We've speculated about that too.

Yeah.

One of the things that Eddie Q mentioned in the interview is that Apple is most interested

in showing a sport on Apple TV where they can control the entire sport.

They currently do that with American soccer, Major League Soccer.

And so everyone around the world that wants to watch it can watch it through Apple.

They don't currently do that with baseball.

They only have what, Friday night baseball games right now.

But he said, you know, that's fine.

We've been using it to sort of experiment it.

So I know what Apple really wants is they want a sport like F1 racing that they could control it worldwide.

Now, they can't do that right now because other people have the rights to it.

But they could start by just buying the U.S. rights.

And if that goes well, maybe over time they could get the international rights and everything else.

I mean, as those come up for renewal.

So I think Apple is putting their toe in the water.

If they announce this, it's all just rumor right now.

But I think that it sounds like something that they do want to do.

They obviously have the relationship with F1 because of the movie.

And I think it's just a question of when they're going to announce it.

They could announce it this weekend.

And the reason I say that is because there's an F1 race.

And I think it's in Austin this week this weekend.

And so if they're having, you know, most F1 races are not in the United States.

But since there is a race in the US this weekend, that could be an opportunity.

or I believe it's a month from now,

like right around Thanksgiving time,

I believe there is an F1 race in Las Vegas

and that's a little closer to home for Apple.

So maybe, so if I had to make,

if I was placing a bet,

I would say either this weekend

or about a month from now

in connection with the Vegas F1 race,

Apple is going to announce this deal.

And then the, go ahead.

Yeah, it's just the story.

Maybe it's breaking news.

I think he just posted.

Oh, Dan, what time is that?

Just posted this morning.

There you go.

Okay, so here you go.

I didn't even see this as widely expressed.

So they did do it.

I was trying to find your link and yeah, well, that's why colors.com.

And it just was posted this morning.

Breaking news.

So here's what I'm curious about.

And I don't know if you, you know, we're looking at it in live time in the story.

Like currently, if you watch F1 racing in the United States, it's you're watching it on ESPN.

And it's the exact same.

It's the exact same feed.

That's one of the British states.

And I think it's called Sky.

They just showed the same thing.

So, but, or you could pay extra for the F1 app and then you can watch all sorts of cool

things like different angles and stuff like that.

And so as for F1 TV premium, it's not going anywhere.

Huh?

Interesting.

So I, yeah, I need to read this article and see the details of how Apple's going to do

it because we know what Apple wants to do.

They want to own the entire thing.

You know, Dan Morin saying more details are going to come.

So, okay, well, this is all in real time.

By the time people are listening to this, we'll have even more details about it.

But this is the next big sport for Apple.

So they have, you know, we announced recently that they're going to do a little bit of basketball

games in the Vision Pro next year.

They've got baseball.

They've got major league soccer.

Now they're going to have F1, you know.

It's just so interesting.

Again, you know, we did soccer and everybody was like, OK, that's interesting because it's

it's it's not like that there was a huge market for soccer in the United States.

I mean, I know it's big.

Please don't.

You don't have to send emails, but certainly way bigger over internationally wise.

But Apple was able to get the U.S. rights to do that.

And in the same way, F1 is not humongous in the United States, huge in the rest of the world.

And Apple has focused on these sports in this way to just at least get the U.S. rights to show this.

And boy, I just feel like that they are getting all of the experience that they need that who knows where they're going to go.

You know, if they if they start, they're already starting into baseball.

But I mean, we got football, we got hockey, we got basketball.

I mean, I feel like those are some of the biggies here in the United States and Apple.

I mean, there are some kingdoms that have been built up, right, that are non-Apple.

But who knows where that could go eventually?

That's just really interesting there.

Yeah, I'll be curious to see as we learn more details about this.

Last little link you put in here.

It's a show that I think we might have to start watching, my wife and I, Palm Royale.

Did you watch the first season on this?

My wife and I did watch it, and it was good.

I won't say it was great.

There are better comedies out there, but I did thoroughly enjoy it.

It has a lot of actresses that are fantastic.

It's set in the, I think it was like the 60s or something like that, so it's a period.

It's got a lot of funny humor in it.

But I will tell you, one of the funniest actresses in the show was Carol Burnett, which amazes

to me.

It's like, my goodness, Carol Burnett is still doing television, and I'm not going to spoil

it.

She is not 92 years old.

You said she's 92.

Is she?

I think that's right.

I think that's right.

And I'll tell you, in season one, the role that she has, how can I say this without being a spoiler?

It's a small but important role.

I'll just put it that way.

And when I saw that, I'm like, okay, well, that makes sense because for goodness sake, she's in her 90s.

And so now that they have a second season coming out, I think it comes out in a few weeks, right?

And now that at least according to the preview, Carol Burnett is still going to be in it.

I mean, I just say bravo.

I mean, she is obviously one of the.

I mean, isn't this.

Look at that.

She's been doing.

I mean, you think back of like the Carol Burnett show and all the things that she has done over the years.

One of my favorites.

And here she is.

And it's not just that she's still on TV.

She's really funny.

I mean, she's funny.

I mean, so bravo to Carol Burnett.

So that's the real story here.

Palm Royale.

It's a great.

You know, it's a good enough show.

I'll probably watch season two and see how good it is.

But but I was I was floored.

I was surprised.

She's going to also be in it.

Yeah, absolutely.

That's so great. I used to watch the Carol Burnett show, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman.

I mean, my mom and I would watch that. And I just I've always enjoyed her.

And the fact you mentioned that, but 92, she looks so good for that.

That's yeah. I mean, the Gone with the Wind parody from from the Carol Burnett show from whatever year that was.

Oh, my goodness. Yes. The funniest comedy with her wearing the curtains.

I mean, just just too. So good. So good.

Last little video that you linked to.

Always interesting to see what little videos Apple is releasing.

And I got to tell you, I started this and I was only halfway paid attention.

And then about maybe about 20 seconds in, I'm like, oh, it's all the shapes and the designs are melding into each other.

Very, very clever, Apple.

I like this one.

It's worth watching.

Apple did a nice job with this video.

And again, I think they showed the same video during the iPhone announcement last month.

I think I've seen it before.

Yeah.

But now it's standalone and it's worth watching because it's a well-designed video about design, as it were.

It's very nicely done.

Well done.

In the know.

In the know.

Quick little tip from me.

I upgraded my Apple Watch Ultra 1 to the Ultra 3.

But instead of trading in the Ultra 1, I actually handed it down to my son.

Oh, I didn't know that.

He has been having a blast with that.

Because, first of all, it's the battery life.

Just like you and I have been talking about it all the time.

Oh, gosh.

time gosh yeah he had to charge his his apple watch i think he had a five is what he had so he

had to so the battery wasn't very good anymore yeah he is just in hog heaven now with battery life he

thinks it's fantastic but he's been experimenting with different things and so on the apple watch

ultra as you know there is an orange side button on the left side now do you you don't have that on

the 10 right no i don't have it no i don't have it only on the ultras because it's an orange button

meant to, if you, if you click and hold it down, it becomes a siren. But if you tap it, you can have

it do different things. It's sort of like in the action button on the iPhone. By default, I have

had that be a flashlight on my watch. Now everybody knows that you can use your iPhone as a flashlight.

We see this all the time, right? It's actually the camera flash can be used as a flashlight.

People do that all the time, but I got to tell you, if you've got an Apple watch, you've got a

much better access to a flashlight on there. And so I have this turned on and I just have it turned

on. And first of all, quickly, you can, there's three different modes. You can have just the white

light. You can swap, swipe to the, uh, to the left and you can get a blinker. So I guess, you know,

people can see you or you can swipe again and it actually goes into a red mode on here. So it's

like, it's almost like red light, you know, overnight, that kind of a thing, which is nice.

Exactly. You got it. Now for you to turn it on, you have to go into your control center on the Apple Watch, right? Which is hitting the side button below the digital crown, goes into the control center. You got a little flashlight there. Okay, perfect on that. That's what I said. But did you, I did not know this. This is my little tip that my son and I found out.

uh mode that you're in you can adjust the brightness of the flashlight by turning the

digital crown so if you go into the white mode you can turn the crown up or down i had no idea

so i love using this at night you know my my wife's already embedded but i'm stumbling in and it's

like i don't want to turn on the light i don't want to use my app my iphone but i got my flash my my

watch on my wrist. So a lot of times I'll even use the red light because the red light, you can

still see enough, but it doesn't like blind you or anything, but you can go into the red light and

you can use the digital crown to make it brighter or you can turn it down. I just thought that that

was really cool. That's what I wanted to share today. Has that always been there or is that a

new feature? I don't know. I don't know. To be honest with you, I don't know because I never

thought about it. I would just turn it on and go on with whatever I'm trying to do, but I love

swipe into the red light just because I could, you know, it's just easier on my eyes a lot of times.

And sometimes that white light is very, very bright, but I like now that I can turn it on

and then I just swipe the digital crown and I can turn it down a little bit to where I need.

Thank you for sharing this feature. I actually use this feature just about every day because I'm a

night owl. I'm usually, I'm usually one of the last people to go to sleep in my house,

which means that like I'm downstairs and turning all the lights off and I'm going upstairs and I'm

walking around. And if I don't have something to see, you know, some sort of a night light,

then I'm going to run into something. And so I do this just about every night. And I prefer to use

my watch to do it versus my phone because I might drop my phone or my phone's my pocket. And so it's

one of the reasons that I actually, I know it sounds silly, but it's one of the reasons I miss

having an ultra because I, I loved having that button and I know it's only two taps,

but pressing the side button and then finding the fling and then pressing it. It's whatever. I do it

every day. I wish I had a single button for it. But sometimes that flashlight is a little too

bright. And I can't believe I did not ever try to turn the thing. And it works in all the modes too.

Like you can turn the red one down if you want to do it. That's what I'm saying. Excellent tip.

And by the way, here's the other thing quickly, because I, you know, to turn it off, you can

either push the digital crown. I don't know how you turn yours off. You don't have to go all the

way back into the control center but if you have at least a series 10 or 11 if you have the flashlight

on you can use the wrist flick uh gesture to turn it off as well well look at that i know isn't that

you could swipe down from the top of the watch face as well but it's like you know i'm usually

carrying something or i'm reaching for something and so just being able to like flick it off by

using the wrist flick gesture i think is nice as well very okay that's that's two tips because what

I usually do is when I have the light on, I put my right hand over it to, you know, you

cover it up and that makes it go away.

But sometimes I'm carrying something in my right hand, like my iPhone, for example.

I did not know I could just use this new wrist flick feature, which is a really good feature,

by the way.

This is something new that they came out with last month.

I use wrist.

I think we made it as a tip of the week.

I had no idea it would work with the flashlight.

Yeah.

Something as basic as the flashlight app.

I cannot believe you've blown my mind with two fantastic tips that I am now going to be using every single day.

Thank you, Brett.

Oh, okay.

I got one more.

I'm going to try to go through.

Oh, okay.

So if you're in the flashlight mode and you know if you have a series 10, 11, or ultra 3, you can do the tap tap.

And if you're in the flashlight mode, you do the tap tap.

It'll go to the – did I do it?

Did I win?

It switches modes.

It switches the modes.

Oh, my goodness.

Isn't that great?

So I'm switching between the red, the flashing with the tap tap.

This is too funny.

Okay, good.

Okay, now you're three for three.

It's a flashlight for crying out loud, Jeff.

It shouldn't be this exciting and fun.

But, you know, it's so helpful because you already have it on your wrist.

You don't have to fumble with your iPhone and everything.

It's like get the flashlight and make sure you have a good way to quickly use a flashlight on your Apple Watch.

Good stuff there.

Well, I don't need to have any tips this week because you're blowing me away with your three tips.

But I'm going to offer one.

And this is in some ways, it's a throwback.

Way back in 2013, this was so long ago that I had an iPad mini at the time, which has been a long time ago.

But way back in 2013, I tried this, an iPad case from a company called Dodo case, D-O-D-O case.

I remember that.

And I was like, oh my goodness, it was so cute because they make these cases that look just like a very nice book.

Like not a soft cover book, like a nice hardcover book that's a really beautiful case and stuff like that.

And it's really, really nice.

When you hold your iPad, especially with the mini because it's so small, but even like a regular 11-inch iPad or even a big one, it makes the iPad feel like this premium thing that you're holding in your hand.

It's a wonderful, beautiful case.

I reviewed it 12 years ago.

They now have newer versions and even have little places to put your Apple Pencil and stuff like that.

But the reason I mention it today is that my wife has been using one for her iPad for a long time.

And my wife does not upgrade her technology nearly as much as I do.

And she has an iPad that, I don't know, it's probably 50 years old.

But whatever iPad she uses, she wasn't ready to upgrade the iPad, but she did need to have

a new Dodo case because the one that she had had had just been used so much for so many

years that it was just time to buy a new one.

So she just bought a new one.

And last night she was showing it to me.

And I don't know which of the Dodo case models was.

I think she may, it's not the leather one.

I think it's the one that's called the solid color or something like that.

And it's this really pretty blue.

It looks like this beautiful blue book that you would go if you went into like a library or something like that.

It's a really nice – yeah, the one she has is a little bit different color blue than that.

But I tell you, it feels – so I was just playing with it last night.

It feels amazing in the hand.

It's premium.

It's got that little strap on the side that you take the strap off as if it's like a folio or something.

I mean it's a really nice case.

I got to tell you.

I have the Apple case for my iPad Pro, and it's fine.

I like the fact that it can curl up into like a triangle and you can use it.

Right.

And so for me, that's what I'm going to use.

But if you want an alternative, I just have big thumbs up for Dodo.

And I hadn't really thought about that much because my wife's had her for a long time.

And when she bought the new one this week and I was looking at the website again, which

you're looking at, I see they have all these different designs, you know, whether you want

leather or more hard hard cover.

But these are fantastic.

I just give big thumbs up.

If you're looking for a case for your iPad, you should absolutely consider whether you

want something that has the feel of a really nice book in your hands. They've been doing,

they've been making great products for a very long time. And I'm so glad that they still make these

things and they have them for all the newest models. I mean, I think they even have on their

website, even if you have the brand new iPad pro M5 that was announced this week, of course,

it's the same size as the M4. So that's why, but they've already updated their website to say,

yep, we are ready for you. We have one. Oh, that's so cool. I remember Dodo case. I mean,

your review was from 2013. Like you said, that's amazing. But I'm just glad to see that a company

like this continues to exist. I mean, exactly all made in the USA premium quality materials. I mean,

you're going to pay for it, but you're paying for quality. And it's not a ton. I mean, I think it's,

I think it's like 60 or 70 bucks. It's not like this is $300 or something like that. It's an,

it's a reasonable price for a very nice case. You can just tell that they put a lot of care

into this. And you know, if you're, if you care that much about your iPad as well, this is totally

worth it. And the fact that it lasted as long as it has, even for your wife, the one that you're

talking about as well, that's great. Dodo case, D O D O case.com, not a sponsor, but Hey, we're a

very big fan. I don't know that I ever had one, but I've seen several people having it before.

I remember that you reviewed this and just a good stuff there. Thanks as always, Jeff,

always fun to talk with you in the news, lots of stuff happening this past week,

but I think we covered most of it.

But we'll make sure that we'll talk with you

next week as well.

Thanks again.

Thanks, Brett.

Bye-bye, everybody.
