A demon speaks true words, a court turns violent, and two innocent men end up bleeding in stocks. That is the setup in Acts 16, but the real turning point comes at midnight when Paul and Silas do the one thing most of us would struggle to do in a dark cell: they pray and sing praise.

We walk through the Macedonian vision that redirects Paul to Philippi, the exploitation of the fortune-telling slave girl, and the backlash that follows when deliverance shuts down someone’s business model. Along the way we wrestle with a practical question for Christian living: how do you discern truth when the source is corrupt, and what does faith look like when obedience still leads to suffering?

Then the jailhouse revival breaks out. An earthquake opens doors and drops chains, yet Paul and Silas refuse to run, revealing that God’s answer is bigger than escape. Their worship becomes a witness, the jailer’s life is spared, and one desperate question rises to the surface: “What must I do to be saved?” If you’re searching for hope, spiritual resilience, and a deeper understanding of worship in hardship, this message is for you.

If this challenged you, subscribe for more, share it with someone who needs courage at midnight, and leave a review with the line that stayed with you most.

The crowd rose up together against them and the chief magistrates tore their robes off them and proceeded to order them to be beaten with rods when they had struck them with many blows they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God and the prisoners were listening to them. And suddenly there came a great earthquake so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken and immediately all the doors were opened and every one's chains were unfastened. When the jailer awoke and saw the prison doors open he drew his sword and was about to kill himself supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried out with a loud voice saying Do not harm yourself for we are all here and he called for lights and rushed in and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas and after he brought them out he said what must I do to be saved? Jail House Revival Jail House revival I would have you to know that this text in which was just read into a hearing is a text that tells us of one of the missionary genes of the Apostle Paul the great apostle Paul who has written so many books that we now have in our New Testament that great traveling minister evangelist and apostle Paul himself is in Philippi when what we read happens to him. I would have you to know however that Paul did not intend to go to Philippi Paul was actually passing or hoping to travel to a place called Bithynia but on the night before going to Bithynia Paul gets a dream that we call the Macedonian vision. And this dream tells him don't go into Bithynia but instead come to Macedonia there are people that need to be saved in Macedonia Paul believing that this vision he has to go to Macedonia is from the spirit decides to change his journey he goes to Philippi which is in the Macedonian region and it is in Philippi that Paul first encounters Lydia and he preaches to Lydia and she is one of the first converts to Christianity Paul and Silas after converting Lydia they're now going to the synagogue every day preaching and as they are going there is this young girl following them and she is possessed by a spirit she is possessed by a spirit that is causing her to foretell various things and every time Paul and Silas would pass she would say these men are servants of the most high God and they are here to tell you the ways of salvation and this happened several days day one it occurred day two it occurred day three it occurred and Paul got upset. Now I want you to understand because sometimes we we we misunderstand what's happening I've heard people say isn't she telling the truth she's telling the truth but it's a devil making her tell the truth I want you to understand that even though she was telling the truth she was telling the truth because a devil was prompting her to do it. Don't just look at the fact that it was a truth look at who is responsible for her speaking it and the devil doesn't do anything for nothing I want you to understand this that even the devil could tell some truth but he's telling some truth for an ultimate lie. He's telling some truth for an ultimate evil purpose and so because she is possessed by an evil spirit not because she is speaking truth Paul exercises the demon out of her and he commands this evil spirit to leave her and the moment he does that the people particularly the people who were making money from this girl people who were using her sickness they were using the fact that she was demon possessed to advance themselves financially these people realized that their golden goose could no longer lay eggs and because the golden goose could no longer lay eggs they had to hold somebody responsible and Paul and Silas were the ones responsible and so they brought them to court they brought charges against them it was rigged and then they were told beat them severely and then throw them into prison these guys were beaten scripture did not say how many times they were beaten except that they were beaten and when they were finished struck striking them with blows that were they were thrown into prison they were thrown into prison and then they were fastened after being beaten I want you to know that the beaten the beating that they got was severe because if we read on the jailer who asked what must I do to be saved takes them to wash off their bruises to be refreshed which allows me to know they were beaten to the point of having opened bruises but I want you to picture this that Paul and Silas Paul got a vision from the spirit of God that he should change the trajectory of his mission and instead of going left go right instead of going to Bithynia go to Philippi in the Macedonian region Paul follows the spirit of God but following the spirit of God he encounters a girl who is demon possessed and so he exercises his power given from God to free this woman from demonic possession. And even though he's following the spirit of God and doing the work of God by the power of the spirit of God he ends up in prison. If I had time I would stop right here and tell someone that just because you're doing what God calls you to do does not mean that life would necessarily be easygoing. Just because you're following the will of God does not mean that every day will be sunshine and rainbows just because you're a good Christian does not mean that bad things won't happen to you. Sometimes bad things will happen to you for the very fact that you are a Christian if I had time so Paul is led by the spirit does this act and it leads him to prison but before he gets to prison he's beaten he's beaten severely he's beaten and then placed in a dark dungeon dungeon a dingy cell and he's placed in stocks if this was me I I I would be crying just from the blues I I I would be crying over the pain that I'm now feeling I would be giving in to my agony and my anger if it were me and I need you to imagine if this was you right now I know how the text goes but sometimes we read the text and we forget that we're talking about men just like you just like me if it were me I would find reason to complain if it were me I would be questioning right now whether this is what God intended because God just a week ago you told me don't go to Bithynia you told me instead come to Macedonia I'm doing what you told me to do is this your plan that I got beaten and imprisoned if it were me I would be right now praying but not praying a song of prayers a song of praise I would be praying saying God why me what is happening but then I read and I realize Paul and Silas had a different mentality and spirit than me. Paul and Silas even though wrongfully imprisoned even though severely beaten though right now placed in stocks with a trial pending that is most likely going to be rigged these two guys were told were praying and singing hymns of praise don't don't don't miss this they were praying and singing hymns of praise scripture being specific here didn't just say they were singing because not all songs are the same come here church that there are songs hopefully you you you know songs like this one songs like Pass Me Not O Gentle Savior hear my humble cry while on others thou art calling don't pass me by there's songs that say I need thee oh I need thee every hour I need thee those are the songs that you sing when you're low and you need God to answer your prayer you need God to show up you say I need you oh how I need you that's not the songs that Paul and Silas are singing they're not singing songs of need they're not even singing songs of grief. There are songs in the Psalm that says by the river of Babylon where we sat down and we remember Zion. They're not crying in disbelief they're not even crying out saying they need God they're singing songs of praise that has to be mind blowing no I need to help you they're singing songs of I've been beaten my back is bloody and sore I have a trial in the morning and the judge is corrupt I may not live past the next few days but I'm singing songs of praise and because I don't want you to miss this praise in song is a song that magnifies God is a song that says how great God is church they are beaten and bloodied in prison not sure how the court case is going to go and they're there at midnight when you should be trying to get a good night's rest or if you're up worrying about the next few hours they're there singing how great God is now no no no no no no only one amen so we'll fix this right only one amen so let's fix this they didn't have our songbooks right so let's assume they're singing songs from the Psalms if it's from the Psalms I can imagine that they're singing Psalm 34 I will bless the Lord at all times his praise shall continually be in my mouth oh magnify the Lord with me let us exalt his name together I can imagine that they're singing Psalm 113 and verse number three from the rising of the psalm until the setting of the same God is worthy to be praised I could hear them singing Psalm 150 let everything that has breath praise the Lord I could see them sing Psalm 62 and verse number three for the Lord is great and greatly to be praised verse number four all the other gods are idols I could see them singing great songs just in case you miss all of that if they were singing from our songbook they would be singing hallelujah praise Jehovah if they were singing from our songbook it would be we praise thee O God if they were singing from our songbook it would be how great thou art if there was singing from our songbook it would be God is so good church those are not necessarily the first songs that come to your mind to sing when you are in this type of trouble so it had to make me pause to ask how could they sing praise when they were in the problems how did their problem promote them to praise and I had two answers answer number one was even though they did not know what happened or why it was happening they know who caused all things to happen. Number two, regardless of where they found themselves and in whatever circumstances that met them, they knew that their faith was not going to be moved from the God that saved them. Let me say those two things again. The reason why they found themselves praising in the midst of their problem is because even though they did not know what will happen to them and why what was happening is happening, they knew who causes all things to happen, and that was enough to still say God is good. Second reason was even though this was their present circumstances, even though they were in the midst of this climactic moment, this moment would not shift their faith in God. And so their circumstances was not the cause for their praise, they praised in spite of their circumstances because they knew who their God was, and they knew that their faith rested in him, period, and so they sang these songs, and it made sense now that scripture says all the prisoners while they were singing are listening because everybody else is in jail, just like you, and they don't have a spirit to say, they don't have an attitude to worship, they don't have a disposition to say God is good, they may be feeling otherwise, they may be questioning the goodness of God, and here they are while they are in their woes, while they're in their misery, in their problems, they hear persons who are worse than them. Saying God is so good. Hallelujah, praise Jehovah. We praise thee, O God. So they pause the entire prison is now quiet because they want to know what is it that has these two men who have been beaten, who are bloodied, who now are in trial, possibly awaiting death. How is it that these men could be in such a situation and be singing songs of praise and praying? I wish I had a window just to hear the prayer, because I am pretty sure the prayer matched the singing. The prayer wasn't, oh God, I'm in pain. The prayer was, oh God, you are still great. God, I don't know what's happening, but you are still in control. From the rising of the sun till the setting of the same, you are still great to be praised. Even though the chief magistrates put us here, you are chief above all chiefs, you are king above all kings, you are lord above all lords, our lives are in your hands. I can imagine them praying and saying, Oh God, as we praise thee, let the words of our mouth and the meditation of our hearts be acceptable to you and in your sight, oh our Lord and our Redeemer. I can see them right now praying to the same degree that they're singing. And I believe God honor their prayer because it was full of faith and praise. I believe that what we read happening in Scripture happens because of their faith and their praise. It happens because of their worship. God takes notice of their worship, God takes notice of their situation, and God takes notice that even though they are in this situation, they still thought him worthy to be praised, and God showed up and God showed out. God showed up and he shook the place. They were in chains, but every chain was loose, and now it's time for me to really get excited because it wasn't just Paul and Silas whose chains got loose, but every door was open, every chain was loose. Sometimes you get blessed, not because of you, but because of who you're next to. Come here, church, come here, church. Yeah, you'll miss it, you'll miss it. Every prisoner got free, but not every prisoner was praising. God answered Paul and Silas, but in answering Paul and Silas, people who were in their proximity got the benefit of God's answer to Paul and Silas. I want to run. I just remember I don't have the cordless mic on me. I can't run. Okay, you're also looking funny. There's a guy called Pharaoh who scripture says is blessed because Joseph was in his house, and the Lord was with Joseph. Potiphar and Pharaoh get blessed because of Joseph. You may be blessed right now because of the worshippers in your life. You may be blessed right now because of those who are around you that are praying and praising constantly. This is one of the reasons why you want to be included in that number. I want to be a praiser as well, I want to be a worshiper as well, because God hears the cry of those that are his, but he also hears the praise that is given to him. And so I want God not just to hear my cry, I want him to hear my praise too. Because God moves at both cries and praise. I wish I had a church. If you track the movement of God, several times he would say, I have heard the cries of my people, but several other times he would move because they made praise. Oh, you're looking at me funny. Okay, okay, okay, okay. I need to add five minutes to my sermon because y'all look like we we get the first part, we know the cries, but that praise thing sounds weird. Anybody remember Jericho? What did God say at Jericho? Shout, make a joyful noise. And what happened when they made a joyful noise? The walls came tumbling down. At the sound of praise, God shook. The battle is not yours, the battle belongs to the Lord. That's how you know this Jehoshaphat text. Jehoshaphat then gets the priests and all the worshippers, and he says, Let's praise. And they began singing and worshiping and praising God, and God moved and destroyed the enemy while they praised. That's not the only time. In Acts chapter number four, Peter and John are imprisoned and beaten and released, and then they called the whole church together and they prayed and they praise. And scripture tells you that after they said amen, God shook the entire place where they were. God has a habit of shaking things up when you praise, not just when you cry. You should not just be a one-sided Christian that only knows to cry out to God when you need something. Every now and then you should be a praising type of Christian that is able to say God is good all the time, and all the time God is good. And if you know how to praise, even in the midst of your problem, God knows how to shake things up for good in your life. So God knows how to shake things up. You all good now? He hears the cries, but he also hears the praise. So God hears the praise of these two men and shakes the prison where they are. And here's what I want to leave you with. Because Paul and Silas got an answer from God, they did not move. Again, if it was me, and I was singing, and God shook the place, and my prison door opened, and my chains fell off, I was running faster than Usain Bolt. I was gone. I wasn't looking back, I was going to be a fugitive life. But Paul and Silas did not move. And I need you to understand why. It is because they were praising and singing that God answered. But the question you now have to ask is what was God's answer? God's answer to their praise is, I am with you. That was God's answer. Do not be afraid. I am with you. It makes me remember the several times I've heard God say that in the Old Testament, and Jesus said that in the New Testament. Every time he said that, it was in the midst of controversy and calamity. Do not be afraid, I am with you. Here's why they did not move. God told them, even in prison, even through the beating and the stocks, I was with you. I'm working even here. So they did not move. The jailer, however, figured when he wakes up, he sleeps like me because he slept through an earthquake. When he woke up, he saw all the doors open. And because he's thinking logically, he thought everyone is gone. And because the chief magistrate will hold him accountable and imprison him, he was ready to take his life. So he draws his sword because he assumes everybody left. Because if you were Anderson, you were not staying there. And Paul shouts out to him. Evidently, Paul heard the unsheathing of his sword, and as Paul heard that sword and sheath, he says, Do yourself no harm, for we are all still here. And scripture says he runs in. He was there when they were beaten. He was there at the court case that caused them to be beaten. He was the one who closed the door. And he would have been the one to know how badly beaten they were, how unfairly treated they are, and how bad their case would look tomorrow. And he heard them singing. And in his mind, he's wondering how could these guys praise while they're in the midst of this problem? And then something like an earthquake shook the place and they stayed. So he runs up to them, and his only question is, How could I get what you have? Here's his question again. Says, you guys have something different in you. I heard it, I'm seeing it, and I need some of that now. Where could I get it? How can I get it? What must I do to get some of that? And here's what I want to tell you. You may not always recognize that your disposition, particularly you choosing to glorify and praise God when you could do otherwise, is a witness and a testimony to those who are around you. You may not always recognize it, but this text is telling us that what you're doing is observed by others. And so others see when you complain when you should be praising, others see how God works in your life, and they could respond based on your disposition of faith and praise. Here it is. Because of Paul and Silas, there was revival in the prison cell that night at midnight. He washed them up, he and his family got baptized, and God works out the rest for all of them. Praise is not just something you do on Sunday, worship is not just something you give on Sunday. Worship and praise should be your lifestyle, and when you know how to worship, God knows how to shake things up for you for good. Be a person that has a disposition to give God praise regardless. Because, like Paul and Silas, while you may not know what is happening and why it's happening, you know who causes all things to happen. And secondly, your faith should not be moved because of what's happening to you. And so you too should have a disposition to praise anytime and every time, even in the midst of difficulty, because you know who your God is and you know where your faith rests. And if you could do that, see what God could do. Let's all stand, let's all stand and let's be singing.
