Canaan Is Not For Slaves

You can be free from Egypt and still think like a slave. That’s the tension we sit in as we preach from Deuteronomy 8 and name the uncomfortable truth: Canaan is not for slaves. God calls His people toward a good land, but the wilderness reveals what’s still clinging to us and what would sabotage us if we carried it forward.
We walk through how God uses hunger, waiting and uncertainty as a testing ground, not to destroy us but to expose what is in our hearts. When Israel runs out of bread, they don’t just face an empty pantry, they face a mindset choice: trust the God who provides, or romanticize the past because it feels predictable. We talk about how nostalgia can quietly become unbelief, how “the good old days” can trap a church or a person, and why a season meant for growth can turn into a loop when we refuse to learn.
Along the way, we make it painfully practical with stories about airport security taking away a sentimental cologne and the emotional process of letting go of a first car. Both moments point to the same spiritual reality: some things cannot go where God is taking you. If you’re in a wilderness season, facing a transition, or trying to break patterns that kept you surviving instead of thriving, this message offers a faith-based mindset shift rooted in Scripture.

Deuteronomy 8 Sets The Promise
Anderson GeorgeThy raiment wax not old upon thee neither did thy foot swell these forty years. Thou shalt also consider in thine heart that as a man chasteneth his son, so the Lord thy God chasteneth thee. Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God to walk in his ways and to fear him for the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills, a land of wheat and barley and vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of oil olive and honey, a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack anything in it, a land whose stones are iron and out of whose hills thou mayest dig brass if you read that with me and you followed all the way to the end say amen shift canan is not for slaves part one canon is not for slaves now I know that may sound like it makes sense to you but allow me to take this passage and on this week and next week explain this ideology this concept that Canaan was not made for slaves.
Canaan Is Not For Slaves
Anderson GeorgeLet me tell you a story first that I will repeat at the end so that this comes together in the year of our Lord 2000 and something I had a nice lady friend whose name was not Mahalia I had a nice lady friend and and and she gave me this expensive cologne and and I cherished this cologne because it came from a special lady friend and I remember that I was leaving to visit another country and I forgot that there was a rule about carry-on luggage and liquid and I remember while passing through the security points I got fragged I was asked to open my my carry on because there was something in it that they wanted to inspect and the the the security officer he opened my bag he he found the liquid and the liquid just happened to be my cologne I want you to know I sprayed this cologne possibly 11 times so it was nowhere close to empty not only did I spray it 11 times this cologne was special because of who gave it to me it had sentimental value and then the the security officer had the unmitigated gall to tell me that this cannot go with me he said where you're going you can't take this cologne with you because it does not meet regulation standards. And I stood there and I tried to reason with him because I wanted to take what was accustomed to me I wanted to take what was familiar to me I wanted to take what was sentimental to me over there. And regardless of how I tried to reason he re-emphasized that this is the standard and your cologne is more than the three ulces you can't go there with this and I stood there for about seven minutes trying to contemplate of some way to take this there and eventually I had to resign and give up and tell the security officer please keep this is yours now and take good use of it because where I am going it can't come with me if you understand that you already get the sermon because what happens is in verse number nine of Deuteronomy chapter number eight Moses tells Israel that God is taking them to a land a good land a land flowing with milk and honey he's taking them to a land without scarcess a land where they won't lack for anything the problem is this is not the first time that they've tried to go to that land they've tried 40 years before to go to this good land but they did not make it and the reason why they did not make it is because they were trying to take some things that did not belong in that land let me say it this way God freed Israel from Egypt but realize that they weren't free of Egypt and that's why they did not make it the first time let me say it another way because I want to make sure you get this he took them out of Egypt but he didn't realize they did not yet take Egypt out of themselves and so what happened is there was too much Egypt in them so that they could not make it to the land he planned for them.
The Wilderness Reveals The Heart
Anderson GeorgeThis is in the text I want you to see this Moses says in verse number two and thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness to humble thee and to prove thee to know what was in your heart. The wilderness was not their destination it was their journey and this journey was supposed to be the ground the area the process by which they show what's in their heart and prove that they're ready for next the wilderness was supposed to be a stepping stone the wilderness was supposed to be a transition for better for greater however the wilderness which was supposed to be a preparation an instruction period a process as transition onto better became punishment because they took some things with them that were not supposed to go into Canaan what they took with them was an Egyptian mentality the mentality that got them living and surviving as slaves that mentality that ideology they had too much Egypt in them and Canaan was not designed for that mentality track with me church Moses tells them in verse number three that God humbled you by causing you to go hungry and then he fed you with manna he already said in verse number two God is proving you he's trying to test you to see what's in your heart so it means that God allowed them to go hungry that needs to sit on your mind for two seconds God in advance knew how much food they would need but allowed them to go with not enough food because he was going to use this as an opportunity to expose Egypt in them to expose that they were not yet ready to go where God wanted to take them the promised land was always the destination Israel got in Israel's way from getting it now I know I'm talking about Israel and I'm trying to make sure I lay the context because the truth is I'm not just talking about them. Romans 15 4 says whatsoever things were written afortime were written for our learning that we through patience and comfort of the scripture might have hope. So I'm talking about Israel so that we could see us I'm talking about Israel so that you could recognize what sometimes you categorize as your wilderness period was actually God's testing ground and it proved that you did not have what it takes to make it where God wants you to be the reason why we end up in our wilderness season and our wilderness periods for longer than necessary is because you are carrying baggage with you here that's not meant for over there. Oh I wish I had a church you have and may not recognize that you are carrying with you some baggage all of us have baggage our baggage may be different but we all have baggage and your baggage if you're not mindful of it could prevent you from being where God actually wants you to be one it could not just prevent you it could slow you down let me give you another real example unfortunately when I have to travel by plane I dislike it because it's too much of a hassle lines securities delays luggage I dislike it but I do it frequently and I've learned now that something that helps me be expeditious when I'm traveling is to lighten my luggage I'm not one of those that you would find with three suitcases a carry-on and a personal item that's cumbersome that's too many things to be worried about and to be encumbered around me trying to make it through the airport I get through lines quicker with a small bag than a big one I make it easier through the small passageways of a plane with a small bag than a big one I exit the airport quicker with a small bag rather than a big one again I'm not telling you about my travel preference is I'm just trying to get you to understand that you're toting baggage and not all of the baggage that you're toting is necessary and some of it is slowing you down from getting where you need to be from where God wants you to be that's Israel's problem before we could properly work on this text we have to hear Moses's first message to them Canaan is not designed for slaves.
When Bread Runs Out]
Anderson GeorgeHe humbled you by causing you to go hungry and then fed you with manna. And that should make our minds jog one of the first places it should make your mind jog to is Exodus chapter number 12 in Exodus chapter number 12 after the last plague Pharaoh calls Moses and he tells him somewhere about verse 33 I need you to leave and leave quickly let all of Israel just go now not later go now here's why that happened God calls Pharaoh to tell Moses leave now leave with haste so that Israel does not have time to prepare all the bread that they need for their journey you'll miss it Pharaoh says I'm done you could leave but I don't want you to leave in an hour I don't want you to leave at sunrise leave now and then what happens is scripture tells you somewhere about verse number 39 of Exodus 12 that they only had unleavened dough because their dough did not have time to rise and the amount of dough that they had was small. So that's Exodus 12 by the time you get to Exodus 16 Exodus 16 opens up and says it is the 15th day of the second month of traveling Understand this, they are now some forty-five days into their journey. And guess what happens? There's no more bread. And I'm making sure you see this because in Deuteronomy, Moses said, This was God testing you, this was God humbling you. So forty-five days into their journey, when there's no more bread, God was waiting to see how would Israel handle this? And depending on their response, depending on how they navigate and manage this situation, it would allow me to know whether they are ready for better. So now we need to look at what happened. Don't turn there because I know you know it, but if you need to read it, it's Exodus chapter number 16, the entire chapter. They go into their bags, and no one has any leaven remaining. There's no bread anywhere to share. They're now hungry. This is the forty fifth day of their journey. They saw God apart the Red Sea. But somehow on day forty-five, when bread runs out, their first thought was not the God who parted the Red Sea could provide in the wilderness. Their first thought was not if God could turn the Nile to blood, he could turn stones to bread. Their first thought was not if God could split the land where there is darkness on one side and light on the other, as if there was a curtain between these two areas, then God could cause me to be filled. They did not think God first. What they saw was their lack. We did not have, so we can't make.
When Nostalgia Becomes A Trap
Anderson GeorgeThey glamorized what the experience was as if the cucumber salad did not come with a side of whipping. Not whip, whipping. As if the cucumber salah did not come with a side of hardship and difficulty, as if the cucumber salad did not come with rules, imprisonment, and confinement. All they remember was we had some good cucumbers. So we call it the good old days, and we glamorize the good old days when we look back because something about looking back gives us comfort, at least when it was that we were in that time, we knew what we were dealing with, and I rather deal with a certain unknown than an unknown uncertainty. And so, what happens is we look back and remember the good old days, and we remember when we were 200 and we sang and we filled the auditorium as if God can't do that and more now. See what happens is that mentality stops you from moving forward because you think the best is behind you. Oh, say out, church. That's what happens. You no longer think that better is in front of you, you think better was behind you, and sometimes you get into this mentality where you will accept less than what God has for you, and now you're stuck in this period. This period that was supposed to be a transition, this period that was supposed to teach you that regardless of where you are, what you encounter, God is still God. This period now that was supposed to be chastening, disciplining, instructions, training, and preparation for greater now becomes punishment for not learning. So now they spend 40 years in the same place stuck because they wanted to stay back and hold on to what was rather than anticipate what could be. One more thing.
Confidence For Giants Ahead
Anderson GeorgeIt wasn't, I said this in last week, it wasn't that Moses, as he gives them this speech in Deuteronomy, is telling them that it won't be difficult going forward. It will be difficult going forward, you will encounter obstacles. But I need you to remember that when you were slaves, he brought you out. When you were in the wilderness, he fed you, he fed you in a way that you could not think of. But that's what happened. That's what God could do when you remember it's not about you, it's not about your skill set, it's not about your intelligence, it's not about how well you could plan ahead. It's about you learning that regardless of which state you find yourself in, what season you find yourself in, God is more than sufficient for every one of it. It's God that allows you to walk in the desert and your sandal not wear out. It's God that caused your clothes not to get old. For 40 years, the same God that fed you is the same God that kept you clothed, is the same God that protected you from the heat and from the cold, it's the same God that when you meet the giants in the land, it's the same God that will crush the giants, not you. And of course, Moses has to remind them of these things because when they first came up to the land and they saw the giants in the land, they said, We are grasshoppers, we'll be food for them. And Caleb and Joshua said, It doesn't matter who we are. If God said this is for us, I don't know how he's going to do it, but let's just go. We need to be able to have the tenacity of David. David never fought a battle before, but was willing to go bravely to Goliath. And when he marched to Goliath, he wasn't marching saying, I'm an expert swordsman. He wasn't marching saying, I've done great things. He came saying, You defy the God of these people, and the God of these people will deliver you into my hands. That's what he said. David was confident that he was going to have victory, not because of him, but because of God being with him. You need to be confident that whatever season God is bringing you into, you may not feel equipped for it, you may not feel ready for it. You can think of all the reasons why it should delay. But if God is bringing you to it, you need to believe that He is bringing you to it with everything that you need for it. Whatever the season is, because I'm moving with God, I have all that I need. It requires a shift in your thinking. For next to happen, I need to shift, and that shifting sometimes means knowing what to let go from before.
A New Season Requires Sorting
Anderson GeorgeWhen December 2024 came around, somewhere around the eighth, it became very real to Mihaly and I that we were entering a new season, we were transitioning literally. And this transition was one where we built a life, we built memories, we we built junk stuff and things over the course of more than a decade. And now, because we're transitioning into this new season and literally into this new place, we had to sit down and decide what was necessary to go with us to the new journey. There were some things we could not take with us. Not everything we accumulated was necessary now for the transition. Don't miss this church. It was beneficial then, it was good then, but it had no value for now and for what's coming. I'm not telling you it had no value. I'm telling you you need to know when it's time to say this can't come with me there. You need to know when it's time to say, there are some things that needs to die in mineral springs during COVID period and stay dead. Was that too real? There are some things that happened yesterday that needs to stay dead yesterday, so I can embrace what's coming tomorrow. And as long as you keep carrying that baggage, you'll never be able to make it. Because God is still waiting for you to let go. Canaan is not designed for slaves. You're good? Need to make sure you're good because I'm really trying to be as real as possible this time. This was difficult for us. I remember because of the sentimentality of various things that we had acquired, parting with it was difficult. Parting with it, we both struggled in letting go of some of these things because of what they meant, of the help that they brought, of the security that it provided. But we had to decide that it was time to let go. Let me give you a funny story that's not so funny. I bought my first car just before we got married. And so now, 10 years later, I still have that car. And I don't know what this car was made of. I think it was made of the same material Superman was made out of. No, I kid you not. Because unlike the paper cars they make today, my car could have gone through all sorts of stuff, and it was it would stay intact. I remember that there was a two-year period, two years period where I was unable to do regular maintenance on it, and that car was able to go miles without an oil change, and it never acted up. I remember we got a car because of how Mihalia and I worked, we eventually got two cars, one for her, one for me. Michalia got one of those new paper cars. Right. And when it was time for the oil to be changed, that car would let you know. That car would sound different, it would start different, it would act a fool, a proper fool. It would not drive properly, it would no longer be economical and gas, it would act up. And every time I experience her car doing that, I'm like, my car is such a faithful good car. Even when it doesn't get proper servicing, it still runs as if it's brand new. It could still outperform any of these cars. And I planned, I had great plans to bring this car back because it's 10 years now, it looks worn, it's been through stuff. I had plans to restore my car and bring it back to its former glory. And then this period of transition came. And for the first time, I had to consider that my very first love, my first car, the car that took me everywhere, the car that weathered storms with me, the car that was able to go the distance in difficult times, I had to let go. And that was tough for me. I remember when I lined up a buyer, I scrutinized the buyer because I want to make sure that you love this car as much as I do. And so I was I was very picky. Even when he showed up to to pick up the car, I was reluctant to give him the keys and part with it because this car served me well for over 10 years. And I never thought that I would see the day where it was no longer part of my life, and I'm watching this car leave, and I kept a brave face on because everybody is watching me. But inside I was being torn apart because I'm saying farewell, I'm letting go to something that was a part of more than 10 years of my life that meant something to me. And I know for some of you, he's talking about a car. It's a car. I understand. But you have a thing like that to it. May not be a car, but you have a thing or a person like that that has value to you. But every now and then, God gives us a wilderness or like my first story, a security check. And in that security check, he says, What you have with you now cannot go with you to your next level.
Better Comes After You Release
Anderson GeorgeI told you a story at the beginning. Hopefully, you remember it. Cologne from a special lady friend. And I had to leave it. I was going to a new height, literally, a new place. And I had to leave it, and I was broken up about it. Then I went to my destination, and going to my destination, I met some lovely people, and those lovely people loved on me. And in one of those ways that they loved on me, I got a better, more expensive, better smelling cologne. Here's where I'm telling you this. Not for you to ask me later what was the name of the cologne. I'm telling you this so that you can understand. I thought I was at a crossroad where if I did not take this first cologne with me, that it would be a tragedy. It had to go with me. But God was preparing better. I couldn't see it. I didn't know it. But for me to get better, I had to let go of what was. Only when I released what was could I make it to the new location, and at the new location I was able to receive better. I believe God is not done with you. I believe God is not done with Mineral Springs. I don't believe best was behind you. I don't believe that your best years were your latter years. I believe as long as there's life, as long as the blood is running warm in our veins, that the best is yet to come. But for better to come, we need to let go of what was. Now, I preached what I did last week, so you understand. I'm not saying forget. There are some things that that experience was supposed to teach you to help you into the next season. There are some things you need to remember, but it's in your rear view mirror now. It's no longer in front of you. So you glance at it so it helps you navigate your future. You don't keep looking at it. For some of us, it's time to let some stuff go.
Final Charge To Let It Go
Anderson GeorgeBecause Canaan is not meant for slaves.
