Nostr is a decentralized protocol and social media network that allows users to share ideas without risk or threat of censorship.

Users can run the client (application) and interact through number of different formats such as a twitter-clone or telegram-clone to name the more popular ones.

Key differences from twitter:
No ads, no banning or censorship, no algorithm for displaying posts (you see posts of people you follow in a chronological order)

Nostr uses cryptography to verify users and posts, and relays to relay messages amongst users.
