00:00:41.439 --> 00:00:51.439 The Bible says, Meanwhile, while Boaz went, meanwhile, Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian redeemer he had mentioned came along. 00:00:51.679 --> 00:00:55.280 Boaz said, Come over here, my friend, and sit down. 00:00:55.759 --> 00:00:58.560 So he went over and sat down. 00:00:58.960 --> 00:01:04.879 Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said, Sit here, and they did so. 00:01:05.040 --> 00:01:14.560 Then he said to the guardian redeemer, Naomi, who has come back from Moabi selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. 00:01:15.040 --> 00:01:28.159 I thought I should bring the matter to your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of this seated here, and in the presence of the elders of our people, if you will redeem it, do so. 00:01:28.480 --> 00:01:35.200 But if you will not, tell me so that I will know, for no one has the right to do it except you. 00:01:35.439 --> of property to become final, one party took off his sandal and gave it to the other. 00:02:17.039 --> 00:02:21.360 This was the method of legalizing transactions in Israel. 00:02:21.520 --> 00:02:27.919 So the guardian redeemer said to Boaz, Buy it yourself, and he removed his sandal. 00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:40.879 Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech, Kileon, and Malone. 00:02:41.199 --> 00:02:57.120 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Malone's widow, as my wife, in order to afternoon, brothers and sisters, I want to bring to us a message titled Jesus, the ultimate King's Man Redeemer. 00:04:55.680 --> 00:05:01.120 Jesus, the Ultimate King's Man Redeemer. 00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:15.519 When we talk about redemption in our day-to-day, we are talking about the perspective that we have is the perspective of a very spiritual word and a very spiritual engagement. 00:05:15.680 --> 00:05:24.959 We are actually focusing on salvation and we are focusing about the good things that Jesus has done when he went to the cross. 00:05:25.199 --> 00:05:39.920 But when you talk about redemption in the earlier in the Israel context, and when you go to the Old Testament, where we have the word redemption and we follow the story of redemption, and yes, the word of God is actually about Jesus. 00:05:40.079 --> 00:05:45.279 From Genesis all the way to Revelation, the word of God is about Jesus. 00:05:45.519 --> 00:05:48.480 And Jesus is also the Redeemer. 00:05:48.720 --> 00:05:50.800 Jesus is actually the Redeemer. 00:05:50.959 --> 00:06:00.160 And when we talk about redemption in the ancient Israel, we it is not it is not a very fancy aspect as we view it today. 00:06:00.399 --> 00:06:14.000 In fact, talking about redemption and the redemption system, as you find it in the book of Leviticus, chapter 25, and you'll also find part of it in Deuteronomy chapter 25, I may interest you that you get some time and look at those passages. 00:06:14.160 --> 00:06:25.519 You will realize that it was a system that had been set up by God to take care of those in the society who are vulnerable. 00:06:25.759 --> 00:06:30.079 It was really about protecting, especially the poor. 00:06:30.240 --> 00:06:32.959 It was about protecting the widows. 00:06:33.120 --> 00:06:42.879 It was about protecting members of the Israelite community who, for one reason or the other, may sell their land because of need. 00:06:44.959 --> 00:07:10.480 And since the land belonged to God and belonged to his people, then even if the land is sold, God put in a mechanism to ensure that though at this moment is a time of need, that somebody will stand in the place of this other vulnerable individual who was in desperate need of maybe survival and something like that to redeem their land back. 00:07:10.639 --> 00:07:21.920 It was like a surety that one time, though we have had to part with something that is special to us, somebody will stand up for us and redeem our land back. 00:07:22.079 --> 00:07:58.639 It was also a system that was set apart for widows who, you know, a man had married a woman, and for one reason or the other they didn't have children, they didn't have sons, for example, and this widow widowed this man dies, then there will be a relative who is set in place, whose work will be to acquire this woman and through her perform the duties of a husband and and there be a son who will inherit that which belongs to this man who died before they got children. 00:07:58.879 --> 00:08:12.240 So when you think about redemption, really, uh that system may not have been a system for those who had everything well collected and they were good and things were working for them. 00:08:12.480 --> 00:08:20.639 It may not have been for those who are necessarily wealthy in the society, they did not really think much about redemption. 00:08:20.800 --> 00:08:23.920 It was it may not have been really big news for them. 00:08:24.079 --> 00:08:37.039 In fact, in addition to the king's man redeemer, who was the first person that would redeem whatever was sold out, God also bring in brings in the year of jubilee. 00:08:37.200 --> 00:08:50.399 So that just in case there is no redeemer who helps this poor family or this poor widow to redeem whatever belongs to them back, then they would wait for the year of jubilee. 00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:58.559 It was also a way of redeeming people who had given themselves among the Israelites, either as laborers or slaves. 00:08:58.720 --> 00:09:05.600 And and this person would ensure that even as they serve their masters, that they they were protected. 00:09:05.679 --> 00:09:09.679 They had some rights protected by this kinsman redeemer. 00:09:10.080 --> 00:09:29.120 However, should no one, because there had to be somebody willing to do it, should no one come out who was willing to do it, then this person would have to wait for the year of Jubilee, because at the year of Jubilee everything was restored back. 00:09:31.200 --> 00:09:46.879 Now, if you did sell your land on maybe the the third year, then you will be waiting for 47 years if no one redeems you for there to be hope for redemption for you. 00:09:47.519 --> 00:10:03.840 If you became a slave at year 10 and no one is there to protect you, you would have to wait for 40 years for somebody for for the year of Jubilee, so that in the year of Jubilee you will be released. 00:10:04.399 --> 00:10:14.720 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that in my uh wild imagination, there must have been people who died for two factors. 00:10:14.960 --> 00:10:18.240 They died a desperate death for two factors. 00:10:18.399 --> 00:10:22.080 Number one, that there was no one willing to redeem them. 00:10:22.879 --> 00:10:27.679 But also number two, that they did not make it to the year of Jubilee. 00:10:28.799 --> 00:10:36.320 Because if nobody redeemed you and you never made it to the year of Jubilee, you would have died a desperate death. 00:10:37.759 --> 00:10:47.840 That is what redemption, the system of redemption that God puts in place, uh was meant to cure. 00:10:48.480 --> 00:11:05.759 And here in the passage that we have read, and throughout the book of uh Ruth, we we have we have two women who are in this category, two widows who are in need of redemption. 00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:10.399 Naomi, or rather, the family of Elimelech in chapter 1. 00:11:10.480 --> 00:11:16.480 There is hunger, there is famine in the land, and and and so and so Elimelech moves his family to Moab. 00:11:16.720 --> 00:11:28.399 They leave Bethlehem, the house of bread, and they go to Moab, a nation that had been cast, a nation that had been cast out by God, and they go there in seeking refuge. 00:11:28.639 --> 00:11:32.799 They went to seek refuge, they went so that they can survive. 00:11:32.879 --> 00:11:38.879 And while they were there, the Bible tells us that strategy tragedy struck. 00:11:40.879 --> 00:11:42.480 Tragedy struck. 00:11:44.480 --> 00:11:47.679 I am saying tragedy struck. 00:11:48.720 --> 00:11:53.840 And Naomi lost her husband in a foreign land. 00:11:54.879 --> 00:11:59.919 And and and we are not told whether they they brought back the body to come and bury. 00:12:00.080 --> 00:12:05.360 But I'm looking at the way the situation looks like I it is most likely they didn't. 00:12:05.600 --> 00:12:09.200 They didn't have the capacity and the means to do so. 00:12:09.759 --> 00:12:18.799 And so the Bible tells us that Naomi continued to live there for another 10 years, and in the period of 10 years, two things happened. 00:12:18.960 --> 00:12:26.000 One, her sons marry among the Moabites, and then after they marry, they also die. 00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:38.879 A woman who went out full in her hands with her husband and children, and perhaps things started looking like they were getting better sooner than later. 00:12:39.120 --> 00:12:46.080 She is alone with nothing, without a husband, without sons, and without hope. 00:12:46.799 --> 00:12:51.360 A desperate situation that requires redemption. 00:12:55.440 --> 00:13:03.200 And on her way back, her two daughters-in-law, you know, say, Oh, we are following you, we are going together with you. 00:13:03.440 --> 00:13:12.879 And and Naomi looks at them and says, Hey, my girls, my girls, my daughters, you still have a future. 00:13:14.159 --> 00:13:25.200 Why you are young, you are in your hometown, but all factors held constant, you still have an opportunity. 00:13:26.159 --> 00:13:29.519 I don't allow me to go back. 00:13:30.080 --> 00:13:32.399 And they said, No, we are going with you. 00:13:32.639 --> 00:13:41.360 And and and she tries to paint the picture of how desperate situation the situation will be, or how desperate the situation is. 00:13:41.519 --> 00:13:51.360 She says, Let us exercise our imagination for a moment that perhaps if I got a husband today, let's not talk about a week. 00:13:51.519 --> 00:14:04.080 Today, if I got a husband today, and that husband is very gracious, and also today, by God's grace, I become pregnant, I conceive. 00:14:04.559 --> 00:14:06.240 She's trying to paint the picture. 00:14:06.480 --> 00:14:24.080 So, first of all, there is no husband today, so there is no conception today, but but let's say, for example, it happens, and then she goes further to say, and in fact, we surprisingly discover that by the end of this pregnancy I have twins. 00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:34.559 Will you wait for them until they are old enough for you to marry them? 00:14:35.039 --> 00:14:43.759 And while you are waiting for them, I don't know whether your years will also be somewhere constant, just waiting. 00:14:43.919 --> 00:14:46.799 You are not growing older, waiting for them. 00:14:47.039 --> 00:14:53.120 Naomi is saying the situation is desperate, it is bad. 00:14:54.000 --> 00:15:08.080 And by the way, for your information, in the house of Judah, because Elimelech comes from the house of Judah, Naomi is telling this story from an idea that she has or she had when she joined this family after getting married. 00:15:08.320 --> 00:15:14.240 Do you remember Judah when all his sons died and God struck them dead and Tamar was left? 00:15:14.399 --> 00:15:17.039 What story did Judah give the daughter-in-law? 00:15:17.279 --> 00:15:20.480 Said, now, my daughter, just go back home. 00:15:20.799 --> 00:15:26.960 Should things work out for me here and I get a son, I promise you, I'll give you. 00:15:28.320 --> 00:15:29.919 And you know the story. 00:15:30.240 --> 00:15:33.679 Naomi did not want to get herself into that situation. 00:15:33.840 --> 00:15:36.960 And so she urges the two ladies to go back. 00:15:37.200 --> 00:15:40.879 However, one of the ladies says, No, I am going to cling with you. 00:15:41.039 --> 00:15:42.480 I am going to go with you. 00:15:42.639 --> 00:15:44.480 Wherever you go, I will go. 00:15:44.639 --> 00:15:47.279 Whoever your people are, they will be my people. 00:15:47.440 --> 00:15:49.840 Wherever you will die, there shall I die. 00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:52.720 Wherever you will be buried, there I will be buried. 00:15:52.799 --> 00:15:55.840 And this lady stuck with Naomi. 00:15:56.159 --> 00:16:07.679 And it is this lady called Ruth that now shows up in now a foreign country among a foreign people, and and and they are with Naomi and they have arrived. 00:16:07.759 --> 00:16:13.200 And the women actually they are greeted at at the at the marketplaces. 00:16:13.360 --> 00:16:16.399 They come in at the gates, they are greeted by women. 00:16:16.480 --> 00:16:19.519 And the women are asking, could that be Naomi? 00:16:20.000 --> 00:16:21.440 Could that be Naomi? 00:16:21.840 --> 00:16:24.720 The people, the women could not even recognize her. 00:16:24.960 --> 00:16:32.879 Maybe when when she was living, she she she had makeup, she had ornaments, but as she's coming back, she's coming back in rugs. 00:16:33.120 --> 00:16:35.360 She's also coming back alone. 00:16:35.919 --> 00:16:41.120 Maybe she had she had ointment when she was living, but but now everything has dried. 00:16:41.840 --> 00:16:43.759 And you can ask, is that Naomi? 00:16:44.159 --> 00:16:48.799 And in fact, even her herself, she could not recognize herself as Naomi. 00:16:49.039 --> 00:16:50.399 She said, Call me Mara. 00:16:50.960 --> 00:16:54.960 Things are bad because I'm bitter. 00:16:56.559 --> 00:17:12.400 However, brothers and sisters, it is from this downward, bad, desperate situation and story that we end chapter four of the book of Ruth with celebration. 00:17:12.960 --> 00:17:16.799 We end the book of Ruth with a celebration. 00:17:17.279 --> 00:17:20.720 We end the book of Ruth with celebration. 00:17:21.119 --> 00:17:31.519 And the question is what happened in between chapter one and towards the end of chapter four, brothers and sisters, a redeemer came in. 00:17:32.400 --> 00:17:35.680 It is a redeemer that made a difference. 00:17:36.160 --> 00:17:47.839 I am here to declare over your life that between the beginning of your life, between the beginning of your story and the end of your story, there is a redeemer in between. 00:17:48.079 --> 00:17:50.720 That redeemer makes things different. 00:17:50.960 --> 00:17:53.440 That redeemer, his name is Jesus. 00:17:56.559 --> 00:17:58.720 He makes all things new. 00:17:59.519 --> 00:18:05.119 And so it is this redemption that is happening in chapter 4 that I want us to focus on. 00:18:05.839 --> 00:18:19.440 And it gives us three characteristics of redemption that I want to suggest to us are ultimately fulfilled perfectly in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:18:19.759 --> 00:18:27.680 The first one, therefore, is that for redemption to take place, there had to be requirements. 00:18:28.000 --> 00:18:33.759 There were requirements that had to be met for redemption to take place. 00:18:34.000 --> 00:18:37.119 And so the question is: what are these requirements? 00:18:37.440 --> 00:18:43.519 Boaz brings out these requirements before the elders and before this kinsman redeemer. 00:18:43.759 --> 00:19:00.480 He says that Boaz, when he went up in chapter 4, verse 1, when Boaz went up to the gate and sat down there, and behold, the claws' guardian redeemer or kinsman redeemer he had mentioned in chapter 3 came along. 00:19:00.640 --> 00:19:04.400 Boaz said, Come over here, my friend, and sit down. 00:19:04.720 --> 00:19:06.960 So he went over and sat down. 00:19:07.119 --> 00:19:12.319 Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said, Sit here, and they did so. 00:19:12.559 --> 00:19:20.880 Then he said to the guardian redeemer, Naomi, who has come back from Moab, is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. 00:19:21.200 --> 00:19:23.119 I thought you should know. 00:19:23.839 --> 00:19:26.880 You know, I'm wondering whether it is true he didn't know. 00:19:27.440 --> 00:19:31.279 Boaz is telling him, I thought you should know. 00:19:31.920 --> 00:19:41.759 And then the Bible continues to say, I thought I should bring this matter to your attention and suggest he is the man who has the responsibility, he is the man who has the right. 00:19:41.839 --> 00:19:49.359 But Boaz is saying, I suggest that you buy it in the presence of this seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. 00:19:49.519 --> 00:19:51.680 If you will redeem it, do so. 00:19:51.920 --> 00:19:55.440 But if you will not tell me, so I will know. 00:19:55.680 --> 00:20:00.079 For no one has the right to do it except you, and I am next in line. 00:20:00.240 --> 00:20:06.640 The first requirement is that for redemption to take place, there had to be a kin. 00:20:07.440 --> 00:20:16.559 And a kin is a relative, a close relative, not just any other kin, but a close relative. 00:20:17.440 --> 00:20:34.400 That relative will be the one who has the first responsibility and right to look at the desperate situation of the other kin and actually take up that responsibility to redeem them. 00:20:35.039 --> 00:20:38.720 In this case, we have a fellow here whose name we are not given. 00:20:38.799 --> 00:20:41.279 We are just told he was the closest. 00:20:41.599 --> 00:20:55.759 But though he was the closest, he seems either not to have bothered, because, brothers and sisters, it is very clear from this text that Naomi's arrival in Bethlehem was not secret news. 00:20:55.920 --> 00:21:00.400 You know, you can be in such a situation that it is no longer private. 00:21:00.799 --> 00:21:04.480 Naomi's desperate situation was not private. 00:21:04.799 --> 00:21:19.839 Everybody had the news, but it seems like the kinsman redeemer, the one who had the right, the one who had the responsibility, the one who was the first in line, seems to have been unaware. 00:21:21.039 --> 00:21:25.200 Brothers and sisters, I want to let you know that Jesus is aware of your situation. 00:21:25.519 --> 00:21:29.359 Jesus, who is your kinsman redeemer, is aware of your situation. 00:21:29.680 --> 00:21:32.640 People may not know, but Jesus knows. 00:21:32.880 --> 00:21:35.119 He's aware, he's not ignorant. 00:21:35.759 --> 00:21:37.279 So he had to be a relative. 00:21:37.440 --> 00:21:41.039 But secondly, that person also had to be willing. 00:21:41.920 --> 00:21:44.880 He had to be willing to redeem. 00:21:45.039 --> 00:21:49.599 And the next thing that Boaz then is asking, number one, is saying, You are the man that is qualified. 00:21:49.759 --> 00:21:52.720 But then he goes further to ask him, But are you willing? 00:21:53.119 --> 00:21:58.079 And we, as we see, the man immediately says, I am willing. 00:21:58.400 --> 00:22:02.880 But as we shall see, That will turn around again. 00:22:03.279 --> 00:22:07.200 But this king's man redeemer had to be willing. 00:22:07.440 --> 00:22:13.599 Not only did this king's man redeemer had to be willing, but he also had to be legally qualified. 00:22:13.839 --> 00:22:19.039 And so legally qualified here also means that the person had the right age. 00:22:19.359 --> 00:22:24.319 The person had the right age to transact in this kind of business. 00:22:42.480 --> 00:22:53.920 One who is akin, one who is uh who has expressed willingness, and one who is legally qualified. 00:22:54.319 --> 00:23:09.279 Brothers and sisters, our king and our kinsman, redeemer, his name is Jesus, he perfectly fulfills all these requirements for him to be qualified to redeem. 00:23:10.000 --> 00:23:12.640 Because he became one of us. 00:23:13.119 --> 00:23:15.440 Jesus became a king. 00:23:15.839 --> 00:23:34.960 He became one of us when he left his glory above, when he left his throne above, according to Philippians chapter 2, and he came down to this world, and he was born in Bethlehem without any honor, without even people recognizing that there is a king that is being born. 00:23:35.279 --> 00:23:49.039 He was not honored, he was not even born in a good place, but he left all his glory above so that he can come and associate with you and me and become our king. 00:23:49.359 --> 00:23:53.200 That is the reason why Jesus left heaven. 00:23:57.680 --> 00:24:05.119 And that's why the Bible tells us, Jesus says in John 1, John chapter 10, that he lays his life willingly. 00:24:05.920 --> 00:24:17.599 Jesus is not only qualified to be the Redeemer, He is not only our kin, but He is willing to be your Redeemer. 00:24:17.839 --> 00:24:21.359 This same Jesus is fully qualified. 00:24:21.519 --> 00:24:29.519 And I am here to encourage you this morning to know that Jesus left heaven with your name on his mind. 00:24:33.759 --> 00:24:40.400 He left heaven targeting you to come and associate with you, qualified to be a redeemer. 00:24:40.559 --> 00:24:44.079 And so that today you are not walking alone. 00:24:44.319 --> 00:24:46.799 You have a kinsman redeemer. 00:24:46.960 --> 00:24:51.039 This kinsman redeemer is not only qualified, but he is your friend. 00:24:53.279 --> 00:24:57.200 That is the first aspect of redemption. 00:24:57.440 --> 00:25:01.359 That there was a requirement, and the requirement had to be met. 00:25:01.440 --> 00:25:04.559 But secondly, there was a cost for redemption. 00:25:05.920 --> 00:25:09.200 Redemption was an expensive affair. 00:25:10.160 --> 00:25:20.480 Redemption was a matter that required and called for responsibility, additional responsibility to the redeemer. 00:25:21.119 --> 00:25:31.519 Now, Boaz tells this man in verse 5, he says to him, after he has enumerated his qualification, then he says, Redeem. 00:25:31.839 --> 00:25:35.200 And verse 5, the man says, I will redeem it. 00:25:35.440 --> 00:25:44.720 And then Boaz goes further and tells him, There is a responsibility, there is a cost for this redemption. 00:25:44.960 --> 00:25:53.279 And he tells him, The day you acquire the land, you will also acquire the widow. 00:25:53.920 --> 00:25:56.880 This is what the Bible says in verse in verse 5. 00:25:57.039 --> 00:26:13.359 Then Boa said, On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also buy it from Ruth, the Muabites, the wife of the dead, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance. 00:26:13.599 --> 00:26:21.200 And by this, at this, the guardian redeemer stood up and said, No, I cannot redeem it. 00:26:21.440 --> 00:26:22.000 Why? 00:26:22.240 --> 00:26:23.680 Because there is a cost. 00:26:24.000 --> 00:26:26.000 I might endanger my own estate. 00:26:26.240 --> 00:26:27.359 What does this mean? 00:26:27.839 --> 00:26:32.559 Basically, when you take up the role of a redeemer, it came with a cost. 00:26:32.960 --> 00:26:38.400 Because first of all, you had the cost, you had the
