History doesn’t whisper here; it knocks. We start with the clash between free expression and national survival during the Civil War, when Clement Vallandigham’s defiance led Lincoln to choose exile over prison. From that decisive moment, we trace a thread through Jefferson’s and Madison’s defenses of religious liberty, exploring why persuasion—never force—keeps faith authentic and public life stable.

Along the way, we ground the conversation in scripture that cuts to the heart of freedom and fidelity. Song of Solomon shows love as a choice with real consequences, while Matthew 14 brings us to the shoreline where fear sinks and trust walks on water. These readings aren’t just devotional—they’re civic wisdom. They show how private virtue feeds the public good, how courage multiplies scarce loaves, and how faith steadies us when the wind rises.

We then map those insights onto today’s tensions: when personal beliefs cross into open subversion of the constitutional order, the fabric of freedom tears. The founders expected a nation where conscience is free but character is non‑negotiable, where open inquiry vindicates truth, and where citizens share a moral grammar that makes rights work. Add a Medal of Honor snapshot from Veracruz—George Bradley’s steadiness under fire—and the pattern is unmistakable: character is policy, and duty gives liberty its spine.

If this conversation sharpened your thinking, share it with a friend, leave a review, and subscribe so you never miss an episode. Your notes and questions help guide future shows—what boundary between freedom and loyalty do you think holds a nation together?

Lincoln, Vallandigham, And Exile

SPEAKER_00

So I think this is gonna tie in pretty good. That happens so so frequently, folks. Uh something accidentally ties together as I'm starting to record the podcast. So Clement Vallendingham. I was unfamiliar with it until we read that little speech by Theodore Roosevelt recently. But Clement Vallendingham was a Ohio Democrat representative during the Civil War. And on May the 5th, 1863, he was arrested by Union military authorities under the orders of General Ambrose Burnside and charged with disloyalty hindering the war effort. And a military commission convicted him and sentenced him to prison. Lincoln, however, commuted that sentence and ordered him exiled, banished to the Confederate lines. And on May 25, 1863, Union forces escorted him to Confederate territory in Tennessee and handed him over. Apparently the Confederates didn't really want much to do with him, and he ended up escaping to Bermuda and then Canada. And he lived out his life there in exile, I believe. He was not a representative at that particular time. I think he had just lost an election. But he was a representative right up until that lost election, and he was exiled. And I think that that is an outstanding precedent that we need to be following today for those who not only politicians, but everyday citizens who insist on following the evils of Christless conservatism, leftism, or Islam to the point of undermining our republic. But also the right of our nation, as we have done in the past, to exercise like loyalists after the Revolutionary War, that choice that they were given, and Confederates after the Civil War, that choice that they were given. And though it wasn't inside the country, Nazis in Europe, and that choice that they were given at the end of the war.

Marriage Reading: Song Of Solomon

Gospel Reading: Feeding And Walking On Water

SPEAKER_00

This is chapter five. Young man, I have entered my garden, my treasure, my bride. I gather myrrh with my spices and eat honeycomb with my honey. I drink wine with my milk. Young women of Jerusalem, O lover and beloved, eat and drink, yes, drink deeply of your love. Young woman, I slept, but my heart was awake when I heard my lover knocking and calling, open to me my treasure, my darling, my dove, my perfect one. My head is drenched with dew, my hair with the dampness of the night. But I responded, I have taken off my robe. Should I get dressed again? I have washed my feet, should I get them soiled? My lover tried to unlatch the door and my heart thrilled within me. I jumped up to open the door for my love, and my hands dripped with perfume. My fingers dripped with lovely myrrh. As I pulled back the bolt, I opened to my lover, but he was gone. My heart sank. I searched for him but could not find him anywhere. I called to him, but there was no reply. The night watchmen found me as they made their rounds. They beat and bruised me and stripped off my veil, those watchmen on the walls. Make this promise, O woman, O woman of Jerusalem. If you find my lover, tell him I am weak with love. Young women of Jerusalem, why is your lover better than all others? O woman of rare beauty? What makes your lover so special that we must promise this? Young woman, my lover is dark and dazzling, better than ten thousand others. His head is finest gold, his wavy hair as black as a raven. His eyes sparkle like doves beside springs of water. They are set like jewels washed in milk. His cheeks are like gardens of spices giving off fragrance, his lips are like lilies perfumed with myrrh. His arms are like rounded bars of gold set with beryl. His body is like bright ivory, glowing with lapis luzuli. His legs are like marble pillars set in sockets of finest gold, his posture is stately, like the noble cedars of Lebanon, his mouth is sweetness itself. He is desirable in every way. Such, O woman, O woman of Jerusalem, is my lover, my friend.

SPEAKER_01

Scripture for today. Get back into Matthew chapter fourteen.

Psalms And Proverbs Reflections

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, start with verse thirteen. As soon as Jesus heard the news, he left in a boat to a remote area to be alone. But the crowds heard where he was headed and followed on foot from many towns. Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat and he had compassion on them and healed their sick. That evening the disciples came to him and said, This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away so that they can go to the villages and buy food for themselves. But Jesus said, That isn't necessary. You feed them. But we have only five loaves of bread and two fish, they answered. Bring them here, he said. Then he took the people to sit down on the grass. Jesus took the five loaves and two fish, looked up toward heaven and blessed them. Then breaking the loaves into pieces he gave the bread to the disciples who distributed it to the people. They all ate as much as they wanted, and afterward the disciples picked up twelve baskets of leftovers. About five thousand men were fed that day in addition to all the women and children. Immediately after this Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake while he sent the people home. After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone. Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. About three o'clock in the morning Jesus came toward them walking on the water. When the disciples saw him walking on the water they were terrified. In their fear they cried out, It's a ghost. But Jesus spoke to them at once. Don't be afraid, he said. Take courage, I am here. Then Peter called to him, Lord, if it's really you, tell me to come to you walking on the water. Yes, come, Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw the strong wind and the waves he was terrified and began to sink. he shouted. Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. You have so little faith, Jesus said. Why did you doubt me? When they climbed back into the boat the wind stopped. Then the disciples worshiped him. You really are the Son of God, they exclaimed. After they had crossed the lake they landed at Ganesarat. When the people recognized Jesus, the news of his arrival spread quickly throughout the whole area, and soon people were bringing all their sick to be healed. They begged him to let the sick touch at least the fringe of his robe, and all who touched him were healed. Psalm eighteen thirty seven through fifty. I chased my enemies and caught them. I did not stop until they were conquered. I struck them down so they could not get up, they fell beneath my feet. You have armed me with strength for the battle. You have subdued my enemies under me, under my feet. You placed my foot on their necks. I have destroyed all who hated me. They called for help, but no one came to their rescue. They even cried to the Lord, but he refused to answer. I ground them as fine as dust in the wind, I swept them into the gutter like dirt. You gave me victory over my accusers. You appointed me ruler over nations because I don't even know. People I don't even know now serve me. As soon as they hear of me, they submit. Foreign nations cringe before me. They all lose their courage and come trembling from their strongholds. The Lord lives, praise to my rock. May the God of my salvation be exalted. He is the God who pays back those who harm me. He subdues the nations under me and rescues me from my enemies. You hold me safe beyond the reach of my enemies. You save me from violent opponents. For this, O Lord, I will praise you among the nations. I will sing praises to your name. You give great victories to your king. You show unfailing love to your anointed, to David and all his descendants forever. Proverbs four eleven thirteen. I will teach you wisdom's ways and lead you in straight paths. When you walk you won't be held back, when you run you won't stumble. Take hold of my instructions, don't let them go.

Free Will, Faith, And Civic Limits

SPEAKER_00

Truth can stand by itself. If there be but one right religion, and Christianity that one, we should wish to see the nine hundred and ninety nine wandering sects gathered into the fold of truth. But against such a majority we cannot affect this by force. Reason and persuasion are the only practicable instruments. To make way for these free inquiry must be indulged, and how can we wish others to indulge it while we refuse it ourselves? Noah Webster Let us reject the spirit of making proselytes to particular creeds by any other means than persuasion. James Madison If the public homage of a people can ever be worthy of the favorable regard of the holy and omnisci omniscent omniscient being to whom it is addressed, it must be that in that in which those who join in it are guided only by their free choice, by the impulse of their hearts and the dictates of their consciences, and such a spectacle must be exciting to all Christian nations. Ezra Styles Religious Liberty is peculiarly friendly to fair and generous disquisition. Here deism will have its full chance, nor need libertines more to complain of being overcome by any weapon, but the gentle, the powerful ones of argument and truth. Revelation, the Bible, will be found to stand the test to the ten thousandth examination. So how does this all tie back into the beginning monologue and Lincoln sending the representative to the Confederate lines? How do we tie in religious freedom, right? Free will, and being a Christian nation. So one of uh I guess the arguments, if you want to use that word, that you hear in certain Christian circles often is talking about whether you can earn or lose your salvation, right? And really the fact that it's a free gift, maybe maybe argument's a bad word, discussions, but God gives us free will, folks. We get to choose whether we want to accept his son Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, and we have the ability to reject that as well. And that that's really the end of our contribution to our salvation, our lack thereof, right? We can either choose to accept Christ or we can choose to reject Christ as our Lord and Savior. Free will, right? God gives us that. Our nation was founded on the principles of Jesus Christ, so it makes sense that we would give that option to the citizens in the United States, also, right? You want to choose whether you follow Christ or not, whether you choose some other imposter religion, right? And imposter is specifically a word that some of our Supreme Court justices uh use to describe other religions besides Christianity. So our founders understood two things, two sides of the same coin. One, they understood that you could not force a person to real faith, right? Like the Muslims try and do torture people to faith, like the Catholics and the Anglicans tried to do in Europe. You can't torture somebody into a faith. It's not a real faith. They're not choosing, they're trying to avoid torture and death, right? You have to give people, and if you really trust your faith, I've always said that if you take a kid, especially the smarter the kid is, if they're really seeking truth, but it's really anybody, if they're really seeking truth, they're going to become Christian by default. Right? It's the same thing with AI. If if an AI is truly only truth seeking, if that's the design, then that AI is going to become very quickly Christian. But and and I I think this is the wisdom that our founders exercise and so many of the state constitutions requiring Christians to be or requiring officers, people in place of trust to be Christian. They also knew that if we didn't have a people who followed the principles of Christ, that we were going to lose freedom, liberty, our rights. And we have, and we see that today.

Deportation Claims And Modern Examples

SPEAKER_01

If you want to be a Muslim in America, fine.

Book Plug, Donations, And Closing Prayer

SPEAKER_00

But you're gonna have to acknowledge that you're going to adhere to the principles of Christ over the principles of Islam. If you want to be a socialist, communist, leftist in the United States, fine. But you are going to have to acknowledge that you're going to follow the principles of Jesus Christ over the tenets of Marxist, Marxism, leftism, socialism, communism, Nazism, fascism, right? And you see the problems already developing because that's not what's happening today. That's not what's going to happen. And so you have these people, just like the representative during the Civil War, that claimed that they were going to uphold the Constitution, but in effect, they were siding with the Confederacy and they were undermining the Union and the Constitution. Okay? And that's what we have today. And so, yes, you have the ability as a citizen to choose whatever faith you want or no faith. But only to the point that that individual religious liberty doesn't extend to undermining the nation, to undermining the principles of Jesus Christ. You see that in that people versus Ruggles court case talking about blasphemy laws. You see why we had blasphemy laws. You see why we had the requirement that only Christians could be leaders elected or appointed in the nation, right? And you also see why Lincoln deported his representative and why that would be perfectly within the bounds of reasons for someone like uh the representative from Minnesota right now, uh, that who for years has supported uh Islam and Somalia over the United States, well, then you can go live there. You can go to a Muslim country, you can go to Somalia. And if leftism, communism, socialism is so important to you that you're willing to undermine rule of law, you're willing to undermine the principles of Christ, then there are socialist communist countries out there that we can gladly, we will deport you, we will send you there, and you can live there. Your ability to choose what you want to follow individually stops immediately when you start to harm the widow and the orphan, the poor and the needy, and undermine the principles, the foundation of the United States of America. If you are looking for a family-friendly middle-grade read, if you would check out the countryside series, I would appreciate it. Uh, it's hopefully along the lines, the principles of Christ, at least a little bit more than what we normally get from most entertainment today. Uh kind of like Narnia, The Hobbit, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, those kind of middle grade fantasies. And if you enjoy it, if you would leave a review for the first andor second book or both, I would appreciate it. And if you feel like you're getting something out of the podcast on a regular basis, uh marriage scripture and just the general scripture that we read, medal of honor citations and the historical quotes, heritage. Uh if you have five or ten dollars a month you can donate to the podcast, I would be very grateful for that also.

SPEAKER_01

And there are links for both of those things in the show notes.

SPEAKER_00

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
