Why The Gospel Matters For Preserving Liberty
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Alarms ring across Scripture and history, but panic is not the path—endurance is. We open with Jesus’ warnings about deception, persecution, and wars, then draw a direct line to the quiet courage required to hold families, communities, and a nation together. The through line is simple and demanding: if we want liberty to last, we have to build the character that sustains it, not just talk about threats from afar.
We walk through 1 Peter 3 to reclaim leadership by example in marriage, trading optics for substance and honor. The widow’s two coins expose our own thirst for public approval, while Psalm 49 and Proverbs 10 cut through wealth’s illusions and remind us that the fear of the Lord, not the market, secures hope. Along the way, we face hard headlines—from terror plots to grooming gangs—and hold up a Medal of Honor recipient, Sergeant Benjamin Brown, as a living picture of endurance under fire. These stories are not for shock; they are prompts to grow vigilance, gratitude, and moral clarity.
Our heritage segment reaches back to the 1643 Articles of Confederation of the United Colonies of New England, where advancing the kingdom of Christ and preserving liberty stood side by side. The early aim wasn’t a state-run church or a faith-free state, but a public life shaped by the general principles of Christ—justice, mercy, truth—so the gospel could flourish. That vision challenges us to resist internal decay, keep our promises at home, and show courage in public. If trials are opportunities to witness, then this cultural moment is our chance to speak clearly, act justly, and endure with hope.
If this resonates, share it with a friend, subscribe for more, and leave a review to help others find the show. What does faithful endurance look like where you live?

SPEAKER_00Mark 12, verse 12 and 13. A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed. And everyone will hate you because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. February 24th, 2026, Fairfax County, Virginia. Stephanie Minter, 41-year-old mother who was fatally stabbed multiple times at a bus stop on Richmond Highway by Abdul Jola, an illegal immigrant from Sierra Leone with over 30 prior arrests. What do you think the ideology faith of that person was? Hey folks, this is Jesse Cook back with another episode of the American Soul Podcast. Hope y'all are doing well. Wherever y'all are, whatever part of the day you're in. Sure do appreciate you joining me, giving me a little bit of your time and attention, a little piece of your day. I will try and use it wisely. For those of y'all who continue to share the podcast with others, tell others about it, thank you for those of y'all who continue to pray for me and for the podcast. Thank you very much. Very grateful for your prayers. Father, thank you for today. Thank you for you, Father, and your son Jesus Christ and your Holy Spirit. Thank you for your love and your mercy, your grace and your forgiveness of sins through the merit of your son, Jesus Christ. Thank you for the time to record this podcast, Father. Thank you for those who listen to it, share it. Please be with them, be with their families, bless them, guide them. Help us to do your will, to love you with our whole heart, mind, soul, and strength, to love our neighbors as ourselves. Please guide us home to you in your timing. Keep us safe all the way home to you, Father. Protect us from evil. Surround us with your angels. Be with our military, law enforcement firefighters, be with those out there right now who are enforcing immigration, chasing down criminals, defending us from those who are evil. Be with those overseas and our military who are attacking evil, defending us from evil. Give them wisdom and courage and a strong faith. Be with their families, both here at home from the military and law enforcement firefighters, EMS. Please be with them. Comfort them. Give them your peace. Give them your joy. Give them a strong faith. Help us to encourage them and support them, as well as our leaders, our pastors and our priests, their wives and their children. And turn us back to you as a nation. Father, please. Be with those who are alone, Father, those who are brokenhearted. For whatever reason, draw them close to you. Help them to feel your presence and your peace. And God my words here, Father, please. Your Son's name we pray. Amen. Real quick, I got a text message from a real good friend of mine recently talking about some of the stuff going on with the military lately. And we went back and forth a little bit. Don't forget, folks, that all of the external threats that we face today, Iran, China, North Korea, Russia, they all pale in comparison to the internal threats. In fact, they only exist as noteworthy external threats because of the dysfunction that we have today, the division, the rejection of God and Jesus Christ, the lack of morality, the lack of virtue that we have internally. And there's some positive signs that things are changing. But make no mistake, our greatest threat to our republic, to our way of life, to America is Christless conservatism, leftism, socialism, communism, Nazism, Fascism, Islam. Marriage verses for today. 1 Peter 3, 1 through 7. Wives, likewise, submit to your own husbands. Do this so that even if some of them refuse to believe the word, they may be one without a word by their wives' way of life. After all, they will have observed the reverent and holy manner of your lives. Don't try and make yourselves beautiful on the outside with stylish hair or by wearing gold jewelry or fine clothes. Instead, make yourselves beautiful on the inside and your hearts with the enduring quality of a gentle, peaceful spirit. This type of beauty is very precious in God's eyes. For it was in this way that holy women who trusted in God used to make themselves beautiful, accepting the authority of their own husbands. For example, when Sarah accepted Abraham's authority when she called him master, you have become her children when you do good and don't respond to threats with fear. Husbands likewise, submit by living with your wife in ways that honor her, knowing that she is the weaker partner. Honor her all the more, as she is also a co-heir of the gracious care of life. Do this so that your prayers won't be hindered. You know, that first command there to women is really important reminder for us as men, folks. The very best way, this is just the Marine Corps echoing in my head, the very best way to lead is by example. Mark 1238 through 1313. Jesus also taught, beware of these teachers of religious law, for they like to parade around in flowing robes and receive respectful greetings as they walk in the marketplaces. And how they love the seats of honor in the synagogues and the head tables at banquets. Yet they shamelessly cheat widows out of their property and then pretend to be pious by making long prayers in public. Because of this, they will be more severely punished. Excuse me. Jesus sat down near the collection box in the temple and watched as the crowds dropped in their money. Many rich people put in large amounts, and then a poor widow came and dropped in two small coins. Jesus called his disciples to him and said, I tell you the truth, this poor widow has given more than all the others who are making contributions. For they gave a tiny part of their surplus. But she, poor as she is, has given everything she had to live on. As Jesus was leaving the temple that day, one of his disciples said, Teacher, look at these magnificent buildings. Look at the impressive stones and the walls. Jesus replied, Yes, look at these great buildings. But they will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on top of another. Later, Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives across the temple from the valley from the temple. Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him privately and asked him, Tell us, when will all this happen? What sign will show us that these things are about to be fulfilled? Jesus replied, Don't let anyone mislead you, for many will come in my name claiming I am the Messiah. They will deceive many. And you will hear of wars and threats of wars, but don't panic. Yes, these things must take place, but the end won't follow immediately. Nation will go to war against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in many parts of the world as well as famines. But this is only the first of the birth pains with more to come. And doesn't that ring true today, folks? And how much more do we have a responsibility to take care of this country here in America that God has blessed us with to pass on to future generations if he allows us to stay here that long, to pass on liberty, to pass on the ability to spread the gospel. We're going to talk about that in the heritage section of the podcast today, but we have a distinct responsibility as citizens of the United States to preserve the Union, the ability to have liberty to pass that on to future generations, specifically to allow for the promulgation, the spread of the gospel of Christ. When these things begin to happen, watch out. You will be handed over to the local councils and beaten in the synagogues. You will stand trial before governors and kings because you are my followers. But this will be your opportunity to tell them about me. For the good news must first be preached to all nations. But when you are arrested and stand trial, don't worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time. For it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit. Not me, but you. A brother will betray his brother to death, a father will betray his own child, and children will rebel against their parents and cause them to be killed, and everyone will hate you because you are my followers. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. Father, please help us to endure all the way home to you. Amen. Psalm 49, 1 through 20. Listen to this, all you people. Pay attention, everyone in the world, high and low, rich and poor. Listen. For my words are wise and my thoughts are filled with insight. I listen carefully to many proverbs and solve riddles with inspiration from a heart. Why should I fear when trouble comes, when enemies surround me? They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches. Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God. Redemption does not come so easily, for no one can ever pay enough to live forever and never see the grave. Everything, folks, the only hope we have, the only reason I have salvation in eternal life is Jesus Christ. That's it. And there's a full stop. And that's true for anyone. Those who are wise must finally die, just like the foolish and senseless, leaving all their wealth behind. The grave is their eternal home where they will stay forever. They may name their estates after themselves, but their fame will not last. They will die just like animals. This is the fate of fools, though they are remembered as being wise. Like sheep, they are led to the grave where death will be their shepherd. In the morning the godly will rule over them. Their bodies will rot in a grave far from their grand estates. But as for me, God will redeem my life. He will snatch me from the gra from the power of the grave. So don't be dismayed when the wicked grow rich, and their homes become even more splendid. For when they die they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave. In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success. But they will die like all before them, and never again see the light of day. People who boast of their wealth don't understand they will die just like animals. Important for us to store up for ourselves treasures in heaven, not here on earth. Proverbs 10, 27 and 28, fear the Lord. Fear of the Lord lengthens one's life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. The hopes of the godly result in happiness, but the expectations of the wicked come from nothing. If you are looking for a middle grade fantasy series, if you would check out Countryside, second book, and the first book, I would appreciate it. And if you enjoy it, if you would leave a review online somewhere, I'd be grateful for that too. They're kind of like Narnia, The Hobbit, Percy Jackson. Those are the first two books in the series. And if you feel like you're getting something out of the podcast, if you have five or ten dollars a month you can donate to the podcast, I would be very grateful for that as well. There's links for both of those in the show notes. June 28, 2007, London, United Kingdom. Two car bombs failed to detonate in the West End. They were trying to set them off near a nightclub in Haymarket called Tiger Tiger, and another in Coxpur Street. On the 29th and 30th of June, there was an attempted suicide car bombing and ramming attack at Glasgow International Airport in Scotland. The devices were packed with propane canisters, gasoline, nails, intended to cause mass casualties. No one was killed in the London attempt and the Glasgow attack. Five people were injured, including the two Muslims who attacked. They died from their burns as the Jeep that was on fire apparently crashed into the terminal doors. Again, Islam folks, 2007, June 28th. Benjamin Brown is our Medal of Honor recipient today. Sergeant, Indian Campaigns, Charlie Company, 24th U.S. Infantry, U.S. Army, May 11th, 1889, Arizona, USA. Although shot in the abdomen in a fight between a paymaster's escort and robbers, did not leave the field until a gun wounded through both arms. Credited to Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, not awarded posthumously, presented February 19, 1890. Born 1859, Spotsylvania, Virginia. Died September 5th, 1910, Washington, D.C., buried Soldier's Home National Cemetery, KTAC 7519, Washington, D.C. Benjamin Brown. God help us to have more men like that today. Between 2004 and 2011, 15 girls, victims of the Huddersfield Grooming Gang in West Yorkshire, UK, some of them as young as 11, were groomed, plied with alcohol and drugs, repeatedly raped and trafficked for sex by a gang of 20 men, all Muslim. I think that pretty much says it all there, folks. So our heritage today is the Articles of Confederate Confederation of the United Colonies of New England, May 19th, 1643. The Articles of Confederation between the plantations under the government of Massachusetts, the plantations under the government of New Plymouth, the plantations under the government of Connecticut, and the government of New Haven with the plantations in combination. One thing I want you to remember here is people today talking about the fact that America's foundation was completely secular in nature, or what you hear so often today, especially around Columbus Day, is that all of these people came here just to exploit the Native Americans, right? And gold and greed, etc., etc. Whereas we all came into these parts of America with one and the same end and aim, namely to advance the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ and to enjoy the liberties of the gospel and purity with peace. And whereas, in our setting, by a wise providence of God, we are further dispersed upon the sea coasts and rivers than was at first intended, so that we cannot, according to our desire, with convenience communicate in one government and jurisdiction. So that and whereas we live encompassed with people of several nations and strange languages, which hereafter may prove injurious to us and our posterity, and forasmuch as the nations have formerly committed sundry, insolence, and outrages upon several plantations of the English, and have of late combined themselves against us, and seeing by reason of those sad distractions in England, which they have heard of, and by which they know vi are hindered from that humble way of seeking advice or reaping those comfortable fruits of protection, which at other times we might well expect. That, as in nation and religion, so in other respects we be and continue one according to the tenor and true meaning of the ensuing articles. Wherefore it is fully agreed and concluded by and between the parties or jurisdictions above named, and they jointly and severally do by these presents agree and conclude that they all be and henceforth be called by the name of the United Colonies of New England. The said United Colonies for themselves and their posterities do justly and severely hereby enter into a firm and perpetual league of friendship and amity for offense and defense, mutual advice and succor upon all occasions, both for preserving and propagating the truth and liberties of the gospel and for their own mutual safety and welfare. This is just one example of many folks, and there's a lot more to these articles of Confederation. I just wanted to read those first couple bits. Because it talks about what the main aim is what? Advance the kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ and enjoy the liberties of the gospel and purity with peace. They did not want the state controlling the church, and they did not want one particular denomination controlling the state. They wanted the influence of Jesus Christ in government, but the general principles of Christ, they didn't want Roman Catholicism, Anglicanism, right? They didn't want the Episcopalian Methodist, Baptist, Church of Christ, which wasn't, but uh so many of the others, my brain escapes me right now. But they wanted the general principles of Christ involved in government. They wanted to propagate the gospel of Jesus Christ, to spread the gospel of Christ. Just a good reminder, folks. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. God bless y'all. God bless your families, God bless your marriages if you're married. God bless your nation, wherever you are around the world listening, and God bless America. We'll talk to y'all again real soon, folks. Looking forward to it.
