During the 1920s, the Communist International infiltrated American universities, foundations, and media. This long preparation resulted in what might be called the Great Reading Coup of 1931. Phonics was banished; sight-words were presented as the only acceptable way to teach reading.
A mere 20 years later, Rudolf Flesch wrote a book based on the growing illiteracy of America. The coup was a tremendous successl.
