In the early days of this podcast, I began by bringing in patrol officers and asking them a series of about 25 questions, covering all aspects of their patrol experience. From that initial batch of interviews I would pick a topic, stitch together the responses of several officers, and create compilation bonus episodes I called "Firsthand Accounts." It's been three years since I've produced any of those firsthand account episodes and I've been promising that I would interview a batch of detectives and do the whole process over again. That project has been delayed several times but it is finally starting to come together and I wanted to give you a small downpayment on what is developing. Specifically, one of the questions I'm asking these detectives is "what is your big story." Here are a couple samples. Contributing to the episode are detectives V. Garner and A. Turnage.
The previous Firsthand Account episodes about Patrol Officers were Bonus Episodes 2, 3, 5, 9, and 11. The same concept was used with police sergeants on Bonus Episodes 38 and 39.

Today we're talking to Rick James… no, not that Rick James. Richard James is a chaplain with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police from the Vancouver, British Columbia area. He is a former Canadian police officer and has been working in church ministry for several years. He was also a police chaplain in New York State for some time. Rick journeyed across North America and made a visit to my Kansas City studio part of his trip; at the time he held the record for furthest distance to visit me in person, but just a week after recording this, "Jake the International Security Specialist Guy" visited me from Thailand (Ep 117). I had no idea the distance-traveled record would be broken so soon.

On this episode we're talking to Dr. Olivia Johnson from Blue Wall Institute. She is a researcher and subject expert on police wellness and specifically on police suicide and she is the jagged little pill stuck in the throat of the huge law enforcement machine that is funneling huge amounts of money at suicide prevention. Today she's going to talk about suicide prevention is broken, primarily because of the things that no body, not the family and not the agency, wants to talk about. But these are the things that a serious researcher like Olivia uncovers. Settle in because this is a conversation that shines a light where no one wants to look.

Today we're talking to Dan Nash from the Human Trafficking Training Center and he's going to talk about the difficult encounters officers have with prostitutes who are controlled by traffickers and how they can be helped. In fact, right off the bat Dan is going to lay out the paradox that many trafficking victims find themselves in: they didn't willingly get into this life of prostitution… but they may not willingly leave it either. How does a cop navigate that? Dan Nash has answers and you're going to want to learn more.

Today we're talking to Jake, the International Security Specialist Guy… which may or may not be his real name. Jake has 25 years experience in law enforcement as an American cop; now he lives in Thailand and trains people who are traveling internationally into high threat environments. Jake trains them and helps to manage crises while they're in-country, assisting them with any kind of emergency that would cause them to be ejected from that nation, from war to crime to earthquakes and other natural disasters.
Traveling internationally might be the only time that many American police officers are unarmed. They carry a gun and knife on duty and off duty but not while traveling to foreign countries, which can leave you feeling pretty exposed. Jake is going to talk to us about how not to get kidnapped while traveling in a foreign country. He's going to cover all kinds of scenarios including carjacking, pickpockets, and dealing with scams while traveling.

I got closer to attending the annual training seminar of the ICPC, I thought I'd ask the guy in charge if he had anything he wanted to share. And boy did he! Like a lot of chaplains, JIm is passionate about the well-being of cops and he jumped at the chance to talk about how a police officer finds his or her purpose in law enforcement.

In Kansas City, Kansas we had 4 officers murdered in three separate events in the span of just two years. Two from the police department and two from the Wyandotte County Sheriffs Office. Captain Stephen Smith, a returning guest and friend of the show, had a connection to all four and was on scene when the two deputies were killed. We're going to hear him recount that day and then we'll hear from Steve's adult daughter, Taylor Hubbard, to get her perspective on what a cop's kid experiences during those frightening times when the community knows an officer is down, but the family doesn't yet know who has been hurt.

Tim was a police chief in Minnesota and we'll discuss how NOT to reprimand an officer and what role awards and award ceremonies play in how an officer may feel about him or herself.

One of the most commented on and most frequently requested guests we've ever had on Hey Chaplain is Tim Eggebraaten. In fact whenever someone says, "I really liked the one guy but I can't remember his name," my first guess Tim Eggebraaten and I'm almost always right. This actually happened again just the other day. I love Tim's particular brand of introspection looking back at his time as a police officer in Minnesota and today I brought him in to talk about self-doubt.
