Just for you, Austin. Just for you. Busted out the pink. Uh just for you. Uh, because I know that your feelings a little bit hurt, uh, because I heard through the grapevine that you were thrown out of your your old digs.

Absolutely. I think uh you are you're correct. It's been a been a um sentimental journey uh getting kicked out of the municipal auditorium because I've been there for a long time. And uh, you know, a lot of a lot of meaning to a lot of different things, a little inside jokes or little things that have been uh uh a lot of fun moments that I've had in there in in my career. So it was a little sad leaving it, but we're excited about uh we're excited about why. Um excited about this renovation coming up, and we're gonna learn more about that coming up in a little bit.

Yeah, and and it's interesting that the last recording of the podcast that we had, our July intern takeover, which by the way, the interns they they knocked it out of the park then.

Yeah, they're good. Like I'm we're gonna have to knock them back a little bit because their numbers are better than ours. So we're we're gonna have to like, you know, um, you know, we strain those numbers somehow.

But but but in all seriousness, they did a great job. So big uh a big shout out to our interns um who are you know who are off to school and uh have you know have put their internship time period in the rearview mirror. So a big shout out for their time period uh spent with us and the job that they did with the with the takeover. Uh but but also you know that was the that was the culmination of the podcast being recorded in in your old digs and and we're now sitting in a nicely refurbished uh refurbished studio.

Yep, yep. Finally, uh I've always bit giving Ricky the worst chair in the studio um intentionally, and um and now you got a nice chair.

Yeah, I got a nice chair, and you know, so again, as we as we put that in the rearview mirror, but we what we need to talk about why, which is obviously the the this renovation of the municipal building and and the auditorium, and uh we've got an expert here to talk about it.

Yeah, and um, you know, Mary did a great job interview. Uh you guys are gonna like it. She is very passionate about her job and passionate about uh bringing an event space here into town and uh excited about that. Um, and just a note, Ricky screws it up by trying to drink water, so just kind of know that that's coming up. Um, he could not keep it together um as all he had to do is is take a sip of water. So you will probably hear the uh crinkling of a plastic uh water bottle in the in this here interview.

Not my fault. You didn't you didn't have the cups here as you're supposed to have, provided it's in my contract that you have I had the green MMs and yeah, the lighting.

You're supposed to have a cup. The temperature is uh you know 68.3 like insist in your contract.

You did not A, open the door like you're supposed to, B, you didn't have the cup. So you know, we're gonna have to work on this. Just because you got new digs doesn't mean you can't go away from fulfilling the contract obligations.

Exactly, exactly. Well, um, you know, we'll go from uh high maintenance Ricky to low maintenance Mary, uh, who has a lot of stuff going on, really excited to learn about the municipal auditorium renovation.

Why The Building Officially Closes

SPEAKER_03 4:20

Here we go, Mary, it's a pleasure to have you on the podcast today. We we've we've got a lot of that uh to talk about, so we're gonna hop right in and um you know get going with this. So uh, you know, right off the bat, a lot has taken place at the municipal building over the last month. Um, just a lot of trucks back and forth, and uh, you know, some some of us don't even know, like I don't even know everything that's gone on. So we're happy to have you here to talk to us about it. So tell us what has taken place over the last month since the quote unquote doors officially closed on July 1.

There's been a lot of uh moving parts. Um yes, the doors did um close to the general public, but we still housed um several of the public meetings, including um the council meetings, and that uh final council meeting was on July the 27th. And um so officially the doors are are officially closed 100% now um to the public. And um uh the visitor center has moved out, the main street office has moved out, and they are just a few doors down on um at uh 122 East Jackson Street. So it was important for the Main Street office to remain um downtown and have a presence downtown for not only for um our downtown merchants um but also for accessibility for our visitors.

And and I've seen a lot of our our city trucks there. So what what departments have been there and kind of what have they been doing?

SPEAKER_01 5:56

Whew. Um I definitely couldn't have done it done it without Team Thomasville. Um I want to give a big shout out to uh Solid Waste, um the IT department, public works, the fire department, um, and I couldn't have done it with that, and the marketing department and Austin's team and everybody.

So like are they just like showing up to like give you like a vote of confidence or a pat on the back?

SPEAKER_01 6:18

Like like they're giving me that, but uh but there's a yeah, there's a lot of behind the scenes. Um there's uh I don't know if the building honestly has ever been cleaned out since it opened in 1939. So it looks like Austin's garage.

SPEAKER_05 6:34

Yeah, well well I started in 1939, okay? I just hadn't cleaned out much, okay? It's all right. Some people aren't as organized as others.

So it's fair to say that like a lot of people have been in there clearing stuff out and yes.

Absolutely, yes. And um now that everybody's um all departments have finally moved out, I am the last one in the in the in the building, and uh I'm fixing to go through every closet, every nook and cranny, and uh clean everything out to get ready for the construction.

So Austin, is Mary's new name the last samurai or the lone survivor? What what's the case?

SPEAKER_01 7:08

I'm the captain of the ship.

Yeah, this is the the captain going down with the ship.

The rebuild captain of the ship here. So um gonna be exciting. And yes, it is um um there was a lot of history things that that got recovered, some photos here and there. So really glad uh yourself and a lot of other people kind of have a heart for preservation, not only the building, but the stuff in the building. So that's been pretty cool to watch.

So yeah, the historic preservation is is honestly um what one of the biggest things that I'm excited about is to be able to continue to tell the story of the historic municipal building um because there is a lot of history that has happened inside that building. And um I uh with our uh design team, I have identified that um I wanna I've identified a hallway in the center of the municipal building that um I'm gonna um create into our historic wall and be able to change that out with different pictures and just continue to tell our story.

Yeah. Will there be like man of the year photos in this? I've heard there's a big push for that. You know, um what do you like? I had some some current man of the years have really been pushing. She's in negotiation of the phone. I might be able to find negotiations.

I'm in negotiation and I'm seeing and I might be able to find a little spot.

Oh I yeah, I can find some of those. So uh all kidding aside about um the historic preservation side, and and uh I know Ricky's pushing hard to put his face in there, but let's go to uh an important part in that is where are the public meetings

Public Meetings Move Across Town

SPEAKER_05 8:41

going to? Such a you know, so many public meetings got housed there in the municipal auditorium.

SPEAKER_01 8:47

They are um being moved to different locations throughout the city. Um some of them are are being moved to the um Thomasville, uh Thomas County uh public library. Um some are going to the City of Thomasville um Tom Barry building. We have others going to the city um administration building, and then others are going over to the R Carlton Powell uh public safety complex.

All right. So uh keep checking. Um uh there will also be a lot to to look out for that, but uh we definitely want our citizens to come and and know and uh pretty good participation so far, Ricky, on on some some public meetings we've had. That's what I've heard.

That that is, and uh, you know, we we we're we're excited to, you know, as part of this, move to other locations as well that can potentially bring about other you know citizens to get involved in meetings that potentially in the past hadn't been. So it certainly is a good time for evaluation as far as you know the public meetings and and the uh civic you know, civic uh participation by our community.

Yep. Always a good thing. So switching gears to the design and construction side of

Architects Contractors And Project Plan

SPEAKER_05 9:56

things. Back in February, Cheryl Sealy informed our listeners about the project team uh that are helping to guide this project. Just kind of remind us of the project management team and all the kind of things that are there's a lot going into this, Mary. Uh take us through that.

SPEAKER_01 10:10

Yeah, we've been working with a um consulting group called Turner Townsend and Heary for about the the last uh year and a half, get honestly getting close to two years. And um and we working with them, we've done a market and feasibility study, comprehensive plan, um, a building assessments um uh report, and a lot of behind the scenes work. Um recently, um back in March, um we um sent out an RFP for architects uh for the redesign for the build or for not redesign, I don't want to say that, for the um the design and um the remodel of the municipal building. And um the council has selected uh small wood architects out of um out of Atlanta. They do a lot of um historic preservation um on uh a lot of older buildings, but what they also specialize in is historic preservation on um theaters. So we we felt confident with them.

So um, you know, we've got the architect, and in June we also awarded a general contractor contract. So what uh what GC did the city council approve for this project?

SPEAKER_01 11:19

The um construction manager um firm is CCH Construction, and they're locally um from here in Thomasville, and we're grateful to have them um as our uh managing um contractor.

Yeah, and some may recall that CCH construction was a part of the West Jackson um uh streetscape, and so so obviously a good familiarity there, and it's also uh obviously great to have local. Yeah, you know, it's always great when we can contract uh with our local with our local community in order to uh you know get involved with these projects and and make a difference in the community. So because it is a community project, absolutely the great part.

And they know how important it is. So I I like that too, where they they know how many people go in and out that building and the potential to have even more. So um uh looking forward to seeing what they come up

Historic Preservation With Modern Upgrades

So so we we briefly talked about historic preservation, but you know, talk to us a little bit. You know, we we we mentioned that it's a priority, um, but there are steps that need to be taken in order to maintain what what's kind of what's kind of some of the thought process in the historic preservation that'll take place.

SPEAKER_01 12:28

Well, definitely um the exterior of the building um with our beautiful iconic um building, uh we don't want to make any major changes on the on the exterior. Um we have a um we're gonna be presenting here shortly to the HPC board um on replacing all the windows throughout the building because they are um they're the original wooden single-pane windows, and we're looking for energy efficient um and uh windows that are gonna last um for 20 plus years and be beautiful and um be a replica of the same windows, the the same wooden windows that we have in there currently.

Yeah, um so that I love all that stuff. It's cool, and uh again, just looking forward to all those. Um there's gonna be a lot of um things that uh we're gonna be able to see and and and see progress, but there also be some things maybe we can't see. Um a lot of the you know the the internal uh structure and and and just getting things um, you know, um I've heard a lot of like handicapped kind of things, uh getting that building up to those standards. But um what are some of the first things that citizens can expect to see on these type this type of renovation?

SPEAKER_01 13:44

One of the first things that the citizens are gonna see is we don't we don't um like to talk about it, but it has to be done, is the removal of all the trees and the landscape that's around the um exterior of the building because it's um penetrated, the roots have penetrated the building, causing water damage. So unfortunately, um all the trees in the landscape um do have to come out, but we are working on um a redesign with the landscape designer um to um put some beautiful foliage back out um around our building um to keep it keep it historically beautiful.

Yeah, and I'm and I'm sure that certainly will be the case, you know. Uh that's the great thing about this project team and having had the chance to sit in some of the meetings with with yourself. Um they they certainly are experts in the field. And um, you know, when they provide information, it's always detailed and it's never leaves any questions behind it. Um and so, you know, again, it's just a will really well-rounded team.

Well, and it's always I mean, it with this team, um we've been like I said, we've been working with them for quite some time, and um they really truly feel like a part of our Thomasville family, and they get our historic history and they get where our downtown and they understand that it's so important to keep our history and um the historical preservation of our building.

I'm I'm glad that that you know the the bids went to them because the second uh right behind them was Austin. And uh things would not have gone pretty well. A little haphazard there. I've seen work on projects and um I've seen him work with wires, and that's yeah, you don't want you don't want that. You don't want that. We're we're just lucky right now that this is actually recorded.

I don't know. We'll see. We'll see at the end of this. Uh I will say this, uh, you know, uh the you know, the the unwritten rule of Thomasville is we love trees, uh and and we all do. And it is changed. Those trees have actually changed that space as a huge destination for photos and uh proposals and all kinds of things. And um, I I'm quite confident we'll get back to that, but there will be for now, uh coming up soon, it won't be as uh as fun, as beautiful um as we do the renovations.

Is that as we go yeah, as we go through the renovation, um yeah, there's gonna be um, you know, um it it's gonna it's not gonna be this it's gonna go and it's unfortunate. But um but we are um planning on a um an exterior redesign um on our landscape and over in our courtyard area that is one of the most iconic picture-taking picturists. Um, you know, like Austin said, there's always um people there getting their pictures taken um with the the fountain, the water feature. We are gonna bring back a water feature of some sort. Um we are um going to elevate um the the floor of the um of the courtyard and raise it up for ADA compliance. So that is gonna be a huge plus um that our folks will be able to access the um the building um from multiple points instead of just um one point that's in the back corner of the building. So lots of stuff going on. Um we are gonna also there in the um the courtyard, we're also gonna move uh move the electrical transformer that is taking a lot of footprint um uh out of the courtyard. We're gonna move that in the back parking lot and um it's not gonna take up any parking spots. Um and it's gonna we are totally enhancing um the the flexible space in the in the in the courtyard and gonna make it um even uh even prettier than what it is now.

Yeah, and you and you we we we talked about what the citizens will see. Um obviously some of you know once some of that green space gets uh gets removed um shortly after that will come a different look, right?

SPEAKER_01 17:32

A very different look. Um we're gonna have some scaffolding going up and um that's gonna um that's gonna go around the building on different parts of the building because we've got to be able to access those windows all the way um up to the auditorium um level. And yeah, so it's it's gonna be a different look. There's gonna be um construction fences and um we're gonna put some silt fence around it to kind of hide the construction side of it and um you know try to make it as beautiful as we can during a construction site.

And I've seen some pictures of it, and it looks pretty sharp. Yeah, it does look pretty sharp. Yeah, it kind of gives me a it it kind of gave me when I looked at the picture, it kind of gave me like a like a vibe of New York City type of vibe when you see the scaffolding everywhere, yeah. You always see scaffolding everywhere because there's always construction going on in a city like New York. And but you always gotta walk. So there'll still be accessibility to walk in the perimeter and things of that nature. So I I I've seen the pictures, and uh that'll certainly be a different look uh for the auditorium.

Yeah, so Mary, uh you've touched on this a little bit, but um just to kind of focus in on this question, what are the renovation priorities of this project? Uh I I think we've had these conversations some, but uh just um talk about those.

Life Safety And ADA Fixes

SPEAKER_01 18:48

The main honestly, um it started out um the reason that we needed this renovation uh so desperately is the life safety of it. Um the the staircase for the the fire escape coming out of the um the auditorium level has been condemned um for um due to age and can't access that fire escape. Um we're gonna add fire sprinklers into the Ricky's menacing up the podcast by time.

Well, I mean, you know, soccer players are known to flop. He's over there, you know, flopping over there.

No, it's not that often that we can um see Ricky blushing. The man of the year, come on.

So let's get this thing back on the on the railroad tracks after Ricky derailed it. So life-saving things, you got a lot of ADA. A lot of ADA. We're gonna do um The building's old.

SPEAKER_01 20:03

The building's old, and um it's it's only had a few renovations, um, but this is a major one to get us up to compliance. Um we're um gonna do fire sprinklers um throughout the building. Um lots of great stuff coming.

Yeah, that's gonna be that's gonna be good. Ricky, are you do you have it together enough to ask the next question?

No, I don't, I don't, not at all. No, but but all seriously, uh, you know, Mary, obviously before you go, you know, there there's been a lot of talk in the past about renovations, and obviously there were renovations in the years ago.

Funding Timeline And Bigger Vision

Uh but but tell us, you know, why is this the right time for this project?

SPEAKER_01 20:42

If it if if we didn't do it now, the building would be closed because that's how bad a shape that it's in. Um uh our can our consultants have um identified um some major concerns and it's um they went back to um uh admin, Chris and Cheryl, and the council, and they said it's either closing the building now that all these things have been identified or we have to go through um with the renovation. We know it's gonna be a phased process um renovation. Um we were blessed that the council was able to um grant us um in the 2026 um uh budget some SPLOSS funds and also um through city um budget uh $6.5 million. And this is around a total grand total, um it's a well over um $18 million project um for the full renovation and uh it's yeah, it's beyond time.

Yeah, and and obviously as part of this budget year, as we've mentioned earlier in the year as well, when when our assistant city manager Cheryl Silly was here, you know, there's that that 6.5, you know, for this as far as the 2026. And uh, you know, I I think there's a there's a lot there's a lot of work, uh a lot at work as we look at this project um you know throughout the years. So um it I think that's a big part of it, as you mentioned, uh for the council. Uh the council's been behind it and has been a part of it every step of the way.

And honestly, uh ri uh Ricky, uh this is one of the council's top five um priorities for um for their uh their physical year and um while they're in term, that they um definitely want to see this done and seen this through, you know, see this through to the end um because they know, you know, with this sitting on the corner of Jackson and Crawford Street, this is the center of attention. This is the this is the I call it the icon, the anchor for our downtown. And um the, I mean, I'm not from Thomasville. I moved here from Alabama and when I took my position. And uh it's it's amazing to hear the stories of from our local citizens that um that I've encountered my last two and a half years, the memories that have either sat in a meeting, either sat in a um in an audience or have walked across that stage. There's so many memories. Um I got goosebumps now. And um I want to continue that. Um I'm blessed that I just had a a grandbaby um this past Monday. And um, you know, I'm not doing this just for me. I'm doing it for the future for all the generations to come. This isn't just a a Mary Ricky Austin um, you know, um, and our, you know, it's it's for generations to come. So um I'm excited to be a part of it. I'm excited to be the lead of it and um share this vision. And I heard great things. Um, you know, my like I said, my two and a half years here. I've heard um we used to have some awesome bluegrass um concerts, bluegrass concerts um on the stage. Um I heard that we've had George Jones on the stage. Um I used to work um for a performing arts center in um up in Alabama, and I work backstage hospitality. I did marketing for them, and um I have been blessed to be able to work with some um national touring um artists, the Beach Boys, the Michael Bolton, uh Trace Atkins. And if we were doing it in Oxford, Alabama, why can't we do it here with our beautiful, vibrant downtown?

Is the auditorium big enough? I mean, definitely. Not for our egos, not for our egos. That would be like two people. That's right.

I have kind of kicked it around about um, you know, having a man of the year seat up towards the front. Yeah. But um I haven't identified where that's gonna go yet.

Yeah. Well, we'll say, I mean, you know, um, as as we pick on Ricky for man of the year, you you get extra points for working in the new grandbaby too. That's you know, I knew you'd find a way. Absolutely. Talk about the new grandbaby being congratulations on that, too. Thank you. All right. Uh we are going to um uh thanks again, Mary. We're gonna uh go to a few announcements, but uh again, the project for now is uh scheduled to uh end in the fall of 2027, and uh we'll be right back.

Thomasville History Did You Know

All right, Austin and Mary, this is the uh funnest part of the day because we're talking history. We've been talking about history with the municipal. Uh we're gonna keep on talking history. So, in honor of the bicentennial, our 2022 podcast will include a Thomasville History Did You Know segment. Uh, this information is graciously provided to us by the Thomasville History Center. You guys ready?

All right, here we go. Here we go. Did you know that in 1879 the first telephone is installed in Thomasville? It connects the Mitchell House to H.B. Ainsworth Livery. Livery, actually. Livery. Livery. Livery stable. So Austin, was that phone? I mean, did that phone, was it clear? Did it work good?

SPEAKER_05 26:10

Yeah, it worked good. Um, you know, I I think Alexander Graham Bell put that one in. So uh, but uh I was trying to think actually when the tele telephone was invented. That it seems around that time. So, you know, we were we we're pretty modern back in the day. It was the times. Well to I'll have to look that up while you're doing the rest of it.

And we've been touching on this as we've gone on with these with these segments of the uh of the Bid You Know. Uh so in 1880, Thomas County population stands at 20,597, an increase of 5,000 people since 1870. Oh wow. Yeah, that's amazing. Yeah, we we learn something new every day on this podcast, Austin. And the incredible part is that you've been a part of it since day one because you're like 2,000 years old.

That's right. That's right. Uh I mean I I don't look a day over 500, but um Hey, here's something cool.

Um during the clean out over at the municipal at the municipal building, um, I found an old telephone.

But I don't Maybe it was that telephone. Maybe it could have been.

But it definitely doesn't um date back to the 1800s. Um it's an old um touch phone.

So um those things are cool though, like those things.

So but I'm saving it and I'm gonna put it on display um in the um the hallway there in the municipal building where I make the um historical um hallway, just so the kids can see. There's a lot of kids that's never seen an old telephone.

Updated Meeting Locations Rundown

time. We got a lot going on. We remind everyone to visit the public meetings calendar um at thomasville.org for meeting dates, times, and locations, as we discussed earlier on. Uh, but we're gonna run through those real quick. Um one of the locations as we as discussed, the Thomas County Public Library at 201 North Madison Street. Uh, they will now house the ARSA meetings, city council meetings and workshops, DTTA, uh, GIC, Historic Preservation Commission, Land Bank Authority, Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Recreation Board. So all of those meetings will be held at the Thomas County Public Library. A big shout out and a big thank you to the to the library for uh allowing us during these renovations to host all of these meetings there. Uh at the City Admin Building at 111 Victoria Place, the Downtown Development Authority will meet uh for their monthly meetings. At the uh City of Thomasville Tom Barry uh building, which is located at 326 Fletcher Street, the Main Street Advisory Board uh will meet there, along with the Pension Board and the Utilities Commission. And finally, at the R Calton uh Carlton Powell Public Safety Complex, uh the Public Safety Committee will meet, and that is located at 921 Smith Avenue.

Yeah, and for those, you know, I I don't uh locally people will maybe call that you know where the jail is or where the police and just jail justice center, those those types of things. So um that's where people know that. All
