SZN 8 EP 8 - Nick McCarthy / Retired K9 Officer / Officer Involved Shooting That Changed His Life Forever / Effects on Family Post OIS / Challenges with Command Staff / The Shit Talking Needs To Stop / Code 33 Group
Very excited to get Nick McCarthy on the podcast. Nick and Greg worked together for about 10 years and have some great memories together. Nick shares his journey of joining Law Enforcement with his sole goal of becoming a Canine Handler. Once Nick and K9 Tyke just started to mesh well together and were ready for a great career together, one suspicious occupied vehicle check resulted in an Officer Involved Shooting. Nick was shot in the forehead by a suspect who would've gone to jail for life with what was later learned to be a BB gun. All Officers were physically "Okay" and the suspect was pronounced deceased.
Nick breaks down the Officer Involved Shooting in detail, working with his psychologist to recover mentally, attempting to return to work, how his family was affected, and gives advice to the listeners.
Nick talked about the obvious challenges Law Enforcement faces in today's age and gives his opinion on how we can do our job more efficiently while maintaining safety and taking bad guys to jail.
A huge thank you to Nick for being open and vulnerable to get the important message out to the community that it is okay to get help and take care of yourself.
Follow and Support Nick by following his Instagram Page, Code 33 Group, which will be a great platform to discuss Proactive Policing and making sure Officers across the Country go home at the end of their shift.
