Our first podcast focuses on property taxes, one of the most important components of qualifying to buy a home.

Recently, the provincial government just made a major move in its recent 2021 budget to remove 50% of education taxes off of residential and farm property by 2022.

Other property types such as commercial and recreation are being reduced but at a 10% annual rate. REALTORS® have led the charge on this matter for many years.

Did you know that in 2020, education property taxes in Winnipeg represented 53.6% of total property taxes collected? We know this percentage is even higher in many other municipalities across Manitoba.

So what can be done on the municipal side of the property tax ledger to make sure municipal politicians are aware that the total property tax bills in cities like Winnipeg are some of the highest across Canada.

How do we keep them down?

To speak to what Winnipeg is doing in this regard, we have the pleasure of having City of Winnipeg’s Finance Chair Scott Gillingham join us. He is the city councillor for Winnipeg’s St. James ward.
