2 Guys 1 Cup : A New York Rangers Podcast
Rangers make a splash by landing Gavrikov while Miller heads to Carolina
When the free agent frenzy hits, no one captures the raw emotion and strategic analysis of Rangers hockey quite like the Two Guys One Cup podcast. In this impromptu midday episode, Shawn and Roc break down the Rangers' biggest offseason moves with unfiltered passion and insider perspective.
The centerpiece of discussion is Vladislav Gavrikov's seven-year, $7 million deal with the Blueshirts – a contract both hosts view as surprisingly reasonable in today's inflated market. "He probably took less to come here," they observe, noting comparable defensemen commanding $8.5 million or more. The contract's structure reveals Drury's blueprint: a five-year competitive window aligned perfectly with the team's core of Panarin, Zibanejad, and Fox.
Meanwhile, K'Andre Miller appears headed to Carolina, with rumors suggesting draft pick compensation centered around a future first-rounder. This sparks heated debate about asset management and whether the Rangers are getting proper value for a defenseman once glowingly praised by opposing coaches during playoff battles.
Beyond these headline moves, the hosts dive into roster construction puzzles: Who centers the third line? Which prospects might finally break through? And most critically – can star players who excel in the regular season finally deliver when the playoffs intensify?
For Rangers fans navigating this transformative offseason, this episode provides the perfect blend of tactical insight and genuine fan perspective. Join the conversation and share your thoughts on Drury's plan to build a true Cup contender.
Thank you. Good afternoon. Two guys, one cup Sean and Rock here doing a little reagent frenzy. Couple hours late. It's alright, though we're able to come on here middle of the afternoon. It's a little unique for us. We didn't even plug it, so if anyone's watching this, god bless you. Thanks for joining. Certainly wasn't something we expected to be doing right now, but here we are.
Speaker 2:But this is what makes it fun. This is what makes what we do fun. We're fortunate enough to have the flexibility to do these things, so it's nice. And you know we're going to hopefully get a different crowd that we normally get. You know, at 930 at night we're going to get some different people Oleg's in the chat, oleg Tverdotsky, any chance? He's been traded a few times on trade deadline. What's going on? Bud, welcome, welcome. It's exciting, man. I mean this is, this is the most, the most juice I've had for an off season in a while. Um, they added a piece that they desperately needed. Um, and uh, you know they got them at a number that I think is is palatable, that I pronounced that right, because you know it was good I'm like the man dog when it comes to pronouncing it.
Speaker 1:It's either there or it's not. Yeah Listen, Mikey, it's palatable.
Speaker 2:But no, I mean everyone, I mean from all accounts. We've heard this for weeks and you're not going to like this comment, but I thought about this before. Arthur Staple was the first one that had it.
Speaker 1:Oh, he's blocked on my phone, so I wouldn't have known that.
Speaker 2:He is the first one that had Gavrikov or Keonji Miller. Gavrikov. The Rangers were in on Gavrikov that he hit free agency, that that was the guy they were going to get. That was the guy they were going to target and he was the first one that brought it up. Like today, or like no, no, at the draft combine. He brought it up, got it. This was weeks ago. Well, hello from Israel. Oh, he's in Israel. Nice, wow, nice, god bless. Do you have any relatives in Israel?
Speaker 1:No, do you know of no? No Mike in Houston, is that Mike Silvers? Oh it might be Mike. Is that you?
Speaker 2:It might be, that might be him. Hello there, he likes to say that, so that might be him. So welcome. We have 35 people so far. That's great. So anyway, yeah, it's exciting. I mean it's an exciting offseason. So far They've added a piece that they've needed. They didn't I don't think they broke the bank. I mean, you see, the contracts that are getting thrown around out there, around out there, dude, I mean obviously proveroff's a better offensive player, right. So he got a bigger contract, he got an 8.5, and I think the rangers needed to stay away from the eight million dollar range and they did, and I think they brought in a guy that's gonna play, just play defense and take the body and play smart and just do what he do what he does we.
Speaker 1:We've signed Shusterkin for a $12 million goalie moving forward. He's turning 30. He got Panera and Silva for another year. You went out and you traded a lot of assets to bring in JT Miller. The thought that this team was tanking or the thought that this team was going to half-ass. It made no sense and when it became, obvious.
Speaker 2:Was that something that was going around? Because I didn't hear that. You heard about tanking.
Speaker 1:No, but I'll finish my point Once Provorov is gone, like Gavrikov was the. If you didn't get Gavrikov, what were you doing? Like who was going to be, who was going to play 24 minutes a night next to Foss Miller? Well, that's the scary part. So it became and, like you said, we've heard the rumors for a month that Gavrikov is coming here. It's the worst kept secret around the NHL. So I was always confident that Gavrikov was coming.
Speaker 2:That's the whole tampering aspect of everything. Nobody announced any signings until like 12. An hour later they were all joking about it. I've been watching this thing since 11 o'clock on tsn.
Speaker 1:So, yeah, I know um, but once it became obvious that he was going to be the guy, yeah, and then a guy that I wanted I had circled, that I brought up on the show numerous times, was christian devorek. He's the first domino to go and he gets five and a half. I go.
Speaker 1:If he gets five and a half, then gabrikov's gonna get nine yeah yeah, and you hear, and you heard, um you know, pierre lebrun and everybody on the panel saying they expect gabrikov to get more money than um proverovka, which is eight and a half yeah, so I had already resigned myself to gabrikov's coming, and it's probably going to be nine million by seven, by seven years. I've already like accepted that, because if they don't get him, then what's the move you had to bring in?
Speaker 2:someone like. That move probably would have been to bring in maybe like a nate schmidt or a defenseman of that. And what are we doing then? You, for one year you would be, you would have been piecing it together, they would. That's probably what would have happened. They were going to try to maybe piece it together for one year and see where it happens, and we'll get into it. It looks like there might not be any free agents come 2026.
Speaker 1:All trades and you got to retain your own guys.
Speaker 2:This makes it almost like and a lot of teams that's what they were doing. They were retaining their own players. That this makes it almost like. And a lot of teams, that's what they were doing. They were retaining their own players. That's what they were doing. I mean, brock Besser went back. You know, we saw what happened in Florida. A lot of these teams they're keeping their guys. They're not, which is strange, because if you didn't win with them, why are you bringing them back? But I guess, when there's no other alternative, you have no choice. Yeah, you have no choice, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 1:So Gavrikov definitely took less to come here. I don't think that that's even up for debate. Right, because he would on the open, on the true, true open market, if he allowed like, if he just allowed himself to go to the highest bidder. Right, someone was going to get matched with Provorovka at the very least. Right, if not go over, because he's literally all that stuff. I literally all that stuff.
Speaker 2:I mean, ryan Lindgren got $4.5 million and someone just posted would you rather have Ryan Lindgren at $4.5 million or Will Borgen at $4.1?
Speaker 1:It's not even close. Yeah, it was like 94% Borgen when I clicked on it.
Speaker 2:That's why, when people were crying about that Borgen contract, I'm like relax Right.
Speaker 1:Relax. The Cavs are going to relax.
Speaker 2:You know I mean I, a bargain, relax, right. You know I mean I I want to. You know, we're all. We're all, we're shitting on jury. We're going to see what's going to happen with this gandry miller trade, which we didn't get into yet, but it looks like miller's going to carolina to me. If miller's going to carolina and I think steve corianos mentioned it, he tweeted it out it has to be a pretty decent package if you're trading this guy in the division.
Speaker 1:So, vince I just saw this now, but it's been sent that out like 145 that, uh, carolina has two first round picks next year, right, and that the miller trade will center based around draft pick compensation. So they're dumping the salary, um, they're dumping the player for for futures essentially right, but I'm saying they're not making.
Speaker 1:It's once again hockey trade. No, okay, I thought that might be cocky. Me might be coming back the other way. How much is cut? They can't afford four and a half, three more years. I know they only have Once again. I'm not making a hockey trick. I thought that might be cocky. Miami might be coming back the other way.
Speaker 2:They can't afford to Four and a half, three more years. I know, Sean, but they only have 6.1 million and they still got to sign Cooley and you got to think they're going to bring in at least one veteran. I personally think Parsons is going to be their 13th forward, but let's finish.
Speaker 1:Let's finish on gabber cob.
Speaker 2:It's gonna be some bounce around why, wise man, you are right I'm guilty of it, I'm the worst at four years in. You're getting it. You're getting it. It's awful. Mason gerson resigned with Buffalo two years, that's funny.
Speaker 1:There's a lot of guys. I'm sitting here refreshing, so Puckpedia has a really good tracker. I didn't see that. And they're getting it quicker than anywhere else, are they? Oh, puckpedia, puckpedia is getting stuff on here before it's on.
Speaker 2:Well, they had the Romanov signing last night first. That was the first I'd sort, and all of a sudden guys were putting it out.
Speaker 1:That's where I saw the Dvorak signing before it was on TV or really anywhere else. He's got a tracker right on the main page. Here we go, thank you. So, guys, if you see me turn around, I have a whole second set up.
Speaker 2:Sammy Blade went to Montreal, huh.
Speaker 1:Yeah, viva La. France Just so everyone can see. I got a whole second set up over here. I got TSN and then I got the Puckpedia on that laptop.
Speaker 2:Yeah, he has a whole thing. I only got my phone and my laptop. So, you're a little bit more set up than me. I'm in the war room right now, but it's funny because when I saw the number when LeBron LeBron was the first one I had, I believe and he said seven years and $49 million and I'm trying to do the math in my head I was like that's not really that bad. No, I said that's not $9 million. I knew that for sure. I knew it wasn't $9 million when I was doing it.
Speaker 1:So percentage-wise it is. Does it tell you on here? Let me click on GabraCup.
Speaker 2:In five years, sean, that's going to look like In two years. That's going to look like in two years. That's going to look like a great contract. And you said it perfectly the Adam Fox contract looks great. Now, if Evan Bouchard is getting 10 and a half and Fox I mean you want to say Fox is maybe not as good defensively as Bouchard and I don't watch enough of Edmonton to give an honest assessment they're similar, they're full offensive. I don't know how big is Bruchard? He's not that big right. 6'1". Is he that big? He's not small. He's not small. All right, I thought he was smaller than that, but Fox is 5'11", obviously, and I think that's generous because I a picture of me, fox and Bucinavich and I'm telling you we Fox was between us, it's yeah, but he. You look at Fox's numbers, they're very similar.
Speaker 1:Right now he's at nine and a half million and Bouchard's at 10 and a half, and then you're going to see all these defensemen are all going to go past them now and pro Rob's making a million dollars less than Adam Fox and probably Fox is a better defenseman. We want to shit on him in a lot of ways. No, no. We want to shit on him in a lot of ways, but he's probably my shitting on him is just that he's not a, at least the way he's made up.
Speaker 2:And it's not fair, see is, and our fan base is so guilty of it. We compare everybody to Brian Leach Everybody.
Speaker 1:You know, every quarterback.
Speaker 2:Every guy that's come into quarterback to power play whether it's been Delzato, brad Richards, kotelik, Oli Okunin, no matter who they brought in to quarterback, to power play oh, this is going to be the best. They haven't had a quarterback on the power play since Brian Leach, brian Leach, brian Leach, brian Leach, brian Leach. It's not fair. It's not fair. You're talking about the greatest rager of all time. If you want to say he might be up there in the top five greatest defensemen the Rangers have ever had.
Speaker 1:Argument for another day.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I'm just saying when you look at his number, his salary cap number, now it's not as bad.
Speaker 1:And for you to say that that was impressive Cause you're you're harder on Fox than anybody, Well, you're starting to see cause I guess I've maintained I think he's a top 20 defenseman in the league maybe top 15, you know, depending on the year. But you're starting to see his salary be commensurate with where I think he fits and more guys, and next year there'll be another crop of defensemen that are better than him. That will pass him. But we're talking two years from now as he really starts to. He's not big, he's not going to age well. Adam Fox isn't going to age well. So as we start to really creep into the middle of this contract, his cap percent.
Speaker 2:How old is he now? He's got to be 27. Is he that old at this point he might be? I mean, you know what it is. These years have taken years off my life, so these guys all seem like they're younger probably it is.
Speaker 1:These years have taken years off my life, so these guys will seem like they're younger, probably younger than they are.
Speaker 2:He's a year younger than lingren, right, so lingren's 27, this will be his age 27? No, no, he's. He is 27 now. Oh, he's just 27. Yeah, he hasn't. He has a february.
Speaker 1:He has a february birthday I know that he turns 28 in february yeah, um. So yeah, when he turns 30 and the cap is 109 million. The nine and a half, you know the nine and a half million dollars is not going to be too prohibitive.
Speaker 2:But you need him to produce. Yes, in the playoffs specifically, that's let me listen again. This is a story for another day. But yeah, guys, the problem with this team is you and I know they're a talented regular season team. They've got the pieces for the regular season Panarin, kt Fox, they've got those guys. The problem is is, can those guys, when the shifts get tougher and they're beating around, can these guys absorb playing against bigger teams and in the playoffs, where things get tight and so far I mean Panarin's had his moments? Fox has not produced in the playoffs. He's not been good. He's not been good. I don't even know what his playoffs number is, do you?
Speaker 1:want the breakdown on the Gabrikop deal.
Speaker 2:I saw it, but tell everybody. I know he's getting an $8 million signing bonus right to start. Is that right?
Speaker 1:Yes, $8 million signing bonus. So his base salary for years one through five is $1 million a year. The rest of it is all signing bonuses $8 million, 6.6, 5.5, and then five. So he has a full no-move clause years one through five. Year six he has a full no move clause years one through five, right. Year six he has a 20 team no trade. Year seven the final year he has a 15 team, no trade. Okay, so while it's a seven-year deal, we are truly tied to him, probably for five years. For five which you know this, which is what it goes with the timeline of jt miller's advantage ad box. It goes with the timeline of JT Miller Zibanejad Fox. It goes with the same timeline as when everybody else is pretty much coming up, so they'll be able to move him at that point if they needed to. Not that I want to sit here and talk about moving him, but obviously they're planning this around the five-year run.
Speaker 2:It's always something that comes up in conversation. Sean when it pertains to these contracts when these come out, because the information is there, it's hard and it's hard not to think about it because, yeah, how many guys last the length of these contracts?
Speaker 2:I mean, crider didn't last the length of his right. Brady shade didn't last the length of his six-year deal. Um, you know, rick nash didn't last his deal. I know the range of the sign of of Brad Richards. I heard this is the last year for Brad Richards buyout. Finally he's finally coming off the books. I mean, none of these guys last these contracts. I know two guys that probably last that contract Brandon Smith, and that was only a four year deal, right and and Panarin, and who knows, if they shit the bed he might get traded at the deadline, he might get traded at the deadline. So these guys don't last their contracts.
Speaker 1:I don't know, with what we're seeing with all these, like there's going to be no one to bring in, unless, unless they're that high. Excuse me on Perot, for the future, that Panarin spot, you know, in the top six would that's what we're going to.
Speaker 2:Well, that, let's get to that. Now I mean Emily Ka. That now I mean emily caplan, who she's, she's pretty good, she's pretty on top of stuff. She seems to think that kaprizov and eichel are both going to get done in in the in the very near future. Everyone's going to get done people aren't.
Speaker 1:Every team has money under the cap now so they can retain their well, here's the difference, here's the other dip.
Speaker 2:There's a difference. Those two guys well, I don't know about kaprizov enough, but eichel's in a great spot. I mean, guys, vegas is one of the best franchises in hockey and they don't get shit for it. The Rangers got shit for everything that went down and we talked about it on our last show, about Drury and not being in the boys' club and everything else. But they have been cutthroat from day one and no one says a word. They just do shit.
Speaker 1:And it's impressive.
Speaker 2:They did it before they won a cup, though, sean. To be fair, they did it before they won a cup, but they were forced out a little bit about it and they won and it worked. They weren't tied into these no-movement clauses. What are you shaking your head about the Van Brieveste contract?
Speaker 1:Yeah, I'm like you just moved on from Tarasenko, now you're bringing back Iserman. Are you learning?
Speaker 2:Yeah, I don't know, maybe they just want a bigger body. That's what I'm trying to think about. But the point of the matter is that Vegas has been a standard, a gold standard, as far as how to handle everything, and I don't think Eichel's leaving there as much as you know. I mean, we missed our shot, it sucks. I mean, if it was any other team than Buffalo, if it was anyone else, he'd be a ranger. Yes, and you can thank for everybody, thank our billboard friends, because they're the reason Eichel's not here.
Speaker 1:So it is what it is. It's frustrating. Old news In new news In new news. We have an update. What's that? Alex Bill Zeal returning to the Montreal Canadiens on a two-year deal? Oh no, On a one-year deal, two-way contract.
Speaker 2:No, don't tell me that I on a one-year deal, two-way contract. No, don't tell me that I can't go on. I need a minute.
Speaker 1:I need a minute to collect myself. Feel bad for the sheet rock in Rock's room over there.
Speaker 2:No, it's more of an emotional thing, emotional feeling. I had a very emotional connection to him Anyway.
Speaker 1:Good for him. Good for him. It's like everyone's NHL Network is announcing it, as he's been traded to Carolina, but we don't have anything yet. I mean, they're not going to announce it until they've also agreed to a contract.
Speaker 2:That's been clearly it's been part of it. What the hell does this guy? What the hell does I mean? What? Could he possibly Six, Six, I mean what Maybe?
Speaker 1:even more with what's going on. Who would I compare him to?
Speaker 2:who would you compare him to?
Speaker 1:that just got a contract that you'd be like, oh okay well, if you're carolina and you're giving up, clearly, clearly, at least a first round pick right. Um, again, that's another very, very, very valuable asset the Rangers can use, you know, for this.
Speaker 2:Either way. Yeah, like I said, either they should. It's a valuable asset. Yes, well, that's. I don't know if you heard Elliot Friedman talk about the 26 draft. He seemed to think that teams are going to be reluctant, like good teams are going to be reluctant. Bad teams excuse me, sorry, yeah Are going to be reluctant. Bad teams excuse me, sorry, yeah are going to be reluctant to give up that, that um 26 pick, because they don't want to be the guy. I mean. Look what they said, look what happened to the island yes, I saw that you don't want to be the guy that gives up mckenna and apparently he's.
Speaker 2:He's the cat's meow and he's going to go to pittsburgh. We know that right. You know he's going to pittsburgh, sean, because we need another guy to have the fucking 10 with when crosby's ushering out the door. We know he's going to pittsburgh just to make our fucking lives miserable.
Speaker 1:You know that right yeah, so the two picks. So carolina has their own pick and they have dallas's first round pick okay, so the range will probably get the lower of the two.
Speaker 2:whatever the lower of the two is and I'll probably be top 10 protected and all this other nonsense, lottery protected and all this bullshit.
Speaker 1:Then there's got to be more. There's got to be more than just that.
Speaker 2:I'm sure there's a prospect thrown in there. I don't know enough about their farm system.
Speaker 1:They have no centers from what Steve said. But how about a defenseman? They're deep in wings.
Speaker 2:Oh God, that's the last thing we need.
Speaker 1:Yep, they're deep on the wing.
Speaker 2:Jeff Petrie is going to Florida. Minimum contract plus bonuses that's a nice signing for them.
Speaker 1:Yeah, nate Schmidt going to Utah. Yep Three and a half for Schmitty. What else we got going on? Yeah, it's been fast. I see Petrie. I see the Mason Gertson one now.
Speaker 2:Yeah, mason Gertson.
Speaker 1:So Sean Corrali and Michael Isamoth are off the board.
Speaker 2:Corrali went back to the Bruins, I saw Yep Gordon Perry only got two million dollars. He got bonuses too. He got bonuses. It'll take them up to three and a half. Oh, so that's what a lot of those older players are doing To me. To me. I don't like doing that because I like to keep our cap flexible for next year. Again, I don't know, we don't know who's going to be available, but from what, all accounts, are this crop of free agents that we thought was going to be so good? It might not be as good as we thought so, but again, do they? I mean, let's mention this Dave, you bring back Panarin. Um, that's the only alternative Based on what I'm seeing again.
Speaker 1:I would. I would need more information. I would need to know what Gabriel Perrault is, and it's not my call to make, so they need to know what gabriel perot. You know what it is, it's, it's.
Speaker 2:You know, you gotta, he's not the guy that he is gotta be, you gotta be a, you gotta have the money, and just like the perfect storm when these guys are available. When eichel was available, it was like the perfect storm. Like you didn't you need to have that, that, that moment where it just everything falls into place. And the rangers had it a few times, it just didn't work out. I mean, they had the money for Brad Richards it didn't work out. They had Rick Nash it didn't work out. You know, they had those moments where they've been able to bring in that guy, but it just hasn't worked out and we still always seem to get that guy.
Speaker 1:Yeah, Gavrikov was rated as the second best UFA this year. He's a ranger, Well.
Speaker 2:UFA, because all the guys resigned last night.
Speaker 1:That was nuts. The opening to TSN, to the Free Asian Frenzy show, was hilarious. What did? They say what's the guy's name? James Duthie.
Speaker 2:Is that the guy? He's very funny.
Speaker 1:He's very funny. They show him laying down on the desk and he's got the whiteboard behind him with all the names. It's like, oh yeah, all right, so that guy's off the list, but we still got Marner, we still got this guy that he's going down the whole list and you see in the background Mitch Marner signed and you're like he gets more exasperated and crosses them off. I like it was one by one, to the point where the shirt's unbuttoned. Very funny, if I could find it.
Speaker 2:I'll share it on my Twitter for you guys. That's funny.
Speaker 1:It was very funny, as much as you knew. It was like Mel Brooks type of humor. Yeah, or it's a little cheesy, but it was. You got to laugh at me for it. Tsn just does such a good job they do.
Speaker 2:Sportsnet does a good job, but we don't have access to it, right? We used to. It used to be on the initial network, right? They used to carry the TSN feed and then, when Someone bought, I forgot what happened with TSN and then switched over To Sportsnet. Because it's funny, because I went back and on my TiVo, I forgot what happened with TSN and changed and then switched over to, to, to sports net. Cause it's funny, cause I went back and on my TiVo I know I still use a TiVo which I frigging love Do- you really use TiVo?
Speaker 2:I love it. No, I love my TiVo. I don't know I can't, I can't have any other DVR. I just don't like it. I went back and looked at I have trade deadline and free agent frenzy stuff from 2017 and the 2017 draft.
Speaker 1:That's actually amazing.
Speaker 2:So what I want to do? I went back and listened to what Panarin was signed. I'm going to try to for our next show. I'm going to figure out how to do it. I'm going to get it off the TV and play the clip of what they said about Panarin. It's hilarious, who he's going to play with their whole prediction for everything. Alex Tangay was one of the ones that was on the panel at the time and I'm going to play it. It's very funny. It's just so funny when these things happen and all these years later, you hear them back and listen to it and you're like, oh, they're talking about, oh, capo Caco, he's going to be so good and blah, blah, blah. He's a big body. He's going to play with Panarin. I'm telling you. It's great.
Speaker 1:If I can figure out a way to get it off the TV.
Speaker 2:I'm going to do that. I want to start doing stuff like that.
Speaker 1:That'd be fun, chris, somos in the chat.
Speaker 2:Stuff like that.
Speaker 1:So what do you guys think? Anybody who's in the chat, feel free to post your thoughts on Gabrikov signing or someone you wanted to see signed that wasn't.
Speaker 2:I think the Rangers still have guys they haven't signed because they like to send out press releases a lot in bulk. When they sign, like those fringe players Like Gabrikov will probably have his own press release, but I think if they do sign a minor league kind of person, they usually like to send those out in bulk. So I think we will see that at the end of the day.
Speaker 1:Yeah, but you would have someone reporting this stuff.
Speaker 2:Yeah, maybe.
Speaker 1:Oh, maybe that's true. I mean, none of these small signings are getting past Puckpedia, that's for sure. You know what I haven't refreshed that one. Purbix is gone. I saw that, purbix, yeah.
Speaker 2:That's a big body defenseman. Zach Jones hasn't signed yet, did he?
Speaker 1:No, amazing, amazing that the Zach Jones market is just not out there. Been trying to tell you guys for two. Listen, I said last offseason that he showed enough at the very end of the season before that he earned the chance. He got his chance. He showed very much that he was not the guy.
Speaker 2:And you move on. Well, did you see that statistic about the draft? Yeah, no defenseman got drafted under six foot. So what does that? What does that tell you guys? I mean d'angelo just got a new deal with the islanders. I mean he's under six foot, but I mean it's, it's, you know that type of defenseman? I mean jones will get a contract from somewhere, but it's going to be for the league minimum and it might be a two-way deal. It might be a two-way. You know, we haven't seen any of those guys. It might be a one-way deal.
Speaker 1:It could be a one-way deal for $875, and you just bury it in Hartford. The kid gets paid, but it doesn't count against the cap.
Speaker 2:It's just a one right right I did, I did think and again, I get what everyone says I thought they would give kaliev a shot. I thought they gave him a one-year deal. Say listen, work on your skating in this offseason, you're gonna, you're gonna get. And they, and maybe they offered it to him and he said no, I'm not good, I want, I want to. Well, that's the thing.
Speaker 1:I it's. I think jury's learning a little bit. I think what was it Brooks that said that the Rangers not extending the qualifying offer to Jones was they were doing him a favor, essentially by?
Speaker 2:not extending it, just let him go.
Speaker 1:They did this to Lebor Hayek. Now Lebor Hayek might be coming back to the league after two years or so.
Speaker 2:What's this Russian kid that Kevin Weeks put out?
Speaker 1:Who is that?
Speaker 2:Brian Dublin and Cody Ceci, both going to LA.
Speaker 1:Wow, I thought Dublin was a name that we needed to look out for.
Speaker 2:Well, how can you sign? Yeah, Sean, I just don't think they can sign anybody of substance. Until what's Dublin getting Three and a half million? Wow?
Speaker 1:I thought he'd be like a $1.5 to $2 guy.
Speaker 2:Cody Ceci just got a four-year $4.5 million deal. I could see that Dumoulin just got a three-year $4 million deal.
Speaker 1:Three years and $4 million and we got Gabrikop for $7. I don't want to hear a fucking person complain about this contract.
Speaker 2:No, listen, I don't think it's a bad contract and again, he probably took less. He probably took less. I don't know what LA was offering, but it is incredible to think that we knew this for a month, Like this whole thing. So I was thinking about it. I was like you know, you don't need to tamper. I mean, the Rangers don't need to say where they can have ego could call up and say, and they could be friends for we know, and that's an Aaron and say hey, listen, what do you think about coming here?
Speaker 2:That's the man, I would love it. You know that'd be great, blah, blah, blah. You know I'll talk to my agent, so on and so forth, and that'd be great. And then all of a sudden you know he's coming here. Meanwhile you never said a word to him, you never spoke to him, but you knew he wanted to come. That's not tampering Right, all right. Players can do whatever they want.
Speaker 1:The guy I you put his name up.
Speaker 2:I was rolling because there's a certain person out there he knows who he is who absolutely loved me. Not just you, not you, a person that likes to get autographs all the time. That's who turned me on to him, honestly. Oh, and Forsberg. Anton Forsberg's going to LA. So LA just signed Corey Perry, joel Armia, brian Dublin, cody Cece and now Anton Forsberg. Busy day for them Cup baby cup.
Speaker 1:Nikita Gusev. I wanted a trade for his draft rights from Tampa and then it went to Vegas and I was like come on, I think Vegas gave up a second round pick for his draft rights, or something like that.
Speaker 2:And didn't he go on his side of a New Jersey?
Speaker 1:Yes, but oh, he signed with Vegas first came to like their camp. Oh no, I'm sorry, that was the other. That was the other Russian kid.
Speaker 2:I went to Vegas first.
Speaker 1:Yeah, Another guy dominated the KHL Couldn't, couldn't hack it here. Who said dominated the the AHL Couldn't do shit here. When I saw the picture of that kid on on Twitter, I I thought it was crafts up, Cause it's the same team. It was track, oh yeah. Tractor Chili banks. Yeah, they look alike, but he's 5'8", 160 pounds, oh come on Listen if he is.
Speaker 2:Sean, honestly, if he doesn't cost you anything and you could throw him in Hartford, I don't really give a shit.
Speaker 1:I don't want him taking up a spot. Look at how many kids they're going to have in Hartford this year. A lot, a lot of kids in Hartford this year. They need playing time. Well, let's think about it.
Speaker 2:Who do you think we don't know what the third line looks like, other than we know that. We probably know that Parsons is the third line center as of right now. As of right now, Parsons is the third line center. Who else? I mean a Berard Hoffman, Perot, All three of them are making the team.
Speaker 1:No, I think one of the three will. I think they're going to wind up with a third-line veteran wing.
Speaker 2:What I thought they might do is find a cheap third-line center, which might not be an option at this point, and make Parsons in the 13th forward Third-line center. And replace Brzezinski, because Parsons can play center and wing and you the 13th forward Third line center, and have him replace Brzezinski, because Parsons can play center and wing and you need that.
Speaker 1:And I think that's why they kept him. Third line centers are going for $4 million right now, so they're not finding a third line center.
Speaker 2:Well, Bukestad went for two and a half, but still, I mean every dollar matters.
Speaker 1:Bukestad still he's more of a four, yeah, more of a four. Bukestad still he's more of a four. Yeah, I guess I think you could get away with playing him at three if you got some speed around him. He's really more of a fourth line center. If you gave me the choice of Bukestad or Parson, and just going into the season, I'd take Bukestad because I know the guy can still score and win face-offs and win face-offs. But I and win face-offs and win face-offs. But I think you're going to end up seeing Parson and I think that they're waiting to see which wings. Everyone's playing musical chairs right now. Who's left standing, who's left without a dance partner? And that's the guy that they'll sign for a million bucks.
Speaker 2:Noah Laba's going to be down there next year. The Czech kid which I can't pronounce his last name, is it Jacob Schlemer? Yeah, schlemer, I like what I've seen and heard about him. Sokora, sokora, mcconnell, barker. He's a center, but just forwards, right, no, I know, I'm thinking about the wing, the guys that are on the way. Well, no, no, a lot, it's no elaborate center. Is he a center? No, he's a center.
Speaker 1:All right. So there a wing or center. They got some young guys.
Speaker 2:You've got to think that one of these guys, one of those five guys we just mentioned, turns out to be something right. I hope.
Speaker 1:So I have a lot of not faith. I have a lot of hope in Noah Lava. He played really really well in college, shows a lot of skill. He's 6'2". Morgan Barron physically dominated in college it wasn't necessarily because of skill Nearly as much as Lava Lava. He's got a lot of speed, a good shot. There's a chance that he could be something when he gets here.
Speaker 2:Raddick Fox is going back to Dallas. Three years, two million.
Speaker 1:Brian Attard's brother's going to Colorado. It's like all the same teams are just signing, signing, signing left and right. Now Boston's adding two minor league guys. I mean Jury's made the big splash and I mean the framework for the Miller trade's got to obviously already be done. It's just a matter of miller signing the contract here. Yeah, I, I don't know. I mean it's uh all right. So, no, no, inside scoop here. But oh, but my deal, I forget, I don't care what your fucking deal is. Who is that hosting nonsense? Uh, the suit, the hockey suit, the hockey suit. No, thank you, this is what I would do. I don't give a shit what you would do. So, friedman, still like crazy, how this? You know, noise, noise, noise, nothing. Yeah, like this can't be that hard to hammer out a fucking deal.
Speaker 2:We don't know what kind of contract he wants. Maybe he's giving a hard time Jonathan. Jonathan drew ends going to the Islanders. Two years, 4 million. Yes, it's not a bad deal. Actually I'm surprised it's not that low. Jonathan drew as Jonathan drew, as a what's his name Said uh, jonathan Drouin. Jonathan Drouin as what's his name? Scotty Laughlin. I like when he pronounces those French names and puts his little enunciation at the end.
Speaker 1:We'll see what Drouin can do away from.
Speaker 2:Nate McKinnon We've seen the Islanders find these guys out of nowhere. Brad Boys when did that get them? I'm just saying they. They seem to find these guys like on the scrap heap a lot of times and drew and drew and had a good, decent season last year, but I don't think he was that great Right.
Speaker 1:I see it. No, he had a nice year. What did he score? What is it Like? A point, 75 points a game. Hold on, he always misses time. He's always hurt. You can hear me when I turn right.
Speaker 2:Yeah, okay, freeman's saying he thinks the Rangers game's trade is for the offer sheet compensation. Possibly a small ad. That's what Mike Silvers just said. So he had 37 points in 43 games. Possibly a small add. That's what Mike Mike Silva has just said.
Speaker 1:So he had 37 points in 43 games. It's a good season. You know when, when he was out in the playoffs, what do?
Speaker 2:you do, the Rangers would be getting a first, the third and then maybe something else for Miller.
Speaker 1:What a hope for more I mean you would have thought for more.
Speaker 2:I mean, you would have thought.
Speaker 1:Especially with what you see, carolina always finds a way.
Speaker 2:These guys always go down there and play well.
Speaker 1:Yeah, shea Brady, shea played well.
Speaker 2:Got a freaking seven.
Speaker 1:Did you think he played well?
Speaker 2:I didn't watch him enough, I would say no, but he obviously played well enough that he got a huge contract.
Speaker 1:Looked pretty terrible to me in two playoff series. Listen, Drury's not trading him in the division if he was scared of him.
Speaker 2:Well, no, I also think Drury's not trading him into the division. If that's the best package he could get, he's getting the best package he can get. That's what I'm thinking. I mean, maybe no one else is offering a first. Maybe people are offering a first in 27.
Speaker 1:Oh.
Speaker 2:Yeah, maybe. Maybe they want next year's draft, yeah.
Speaker 1:They made a point.
Speaker 2:They had the 12th overall pick? Yes, and in most cases and in most cases you're like wow, 12th overall and we've seen decent players go at that number.
Speaker 1:There were decent players there for us at 12th Right.
Speaker 2:Well, I'm just saying we've seen guys, for their careers, excel at that number. For them to give it up, you've got to think, for two reasons One, they like the 26 draft and two, if they bottom out, they can't be on the hook. Trey can't be on the hook to lose a lottery pick. So I mean, that's a big thing. So in my opinion, I think that that's the reason why they decided to move the 12th overall pick. But yeah, 12th overall pick, but we're going to see.
Speaker 1:No, it was the right thing, it was the right thing to do, but I'm saying the book won't be written on this trade until we see what the rangers do with that right. So let's say, for instance, that they get, you know, they get the dallas pick, essentially. So I wonder if that'll be predetermined, if there'll be clauses. Maybe there's no, maybe it's unprotected and and that's why we're accepting it- yeah, that would be interesting. I mean not that I think Carolina or Dallas is going to not make the playoffs this year.
Speaker 2:Who thought we wouldn't make the playoffs if it wasn't the President's Trophy?
Speaker 1:This is true, you never know. No, it's very true.
Speaker 2:You never, never know. I mean it's incredible to think that where this team was to where they are now, and it comes down to maybe guys getting old quick. I mean I don't know Kreider, I mean he went from being you know and we'll see this year how he plays, but yeah, and also hurt feelings, but they were not good this year Even when they started off. Great, those games. You're like you wiped your forehead and you were like wow, how the fuck did they even win this? How did they win? I mean, how did they win some of it? Remember the Jonathan Quick game against Detroit where he was playing out of his mind and he shut them out 4-0? I think Jimmy Vesey scored. They were up 1-0. I think Jimmy Vesey scored. They were up 1-0. And I think Jimmy Vesey scored in the third period to make it 2-0. And all of a sudden they scored like two quick goals and it was 3-0. And then that was it.
Speaker 1:We haven't seen the Jimmy.
Speaker 2:Vesey signing yet? No, I hope he does sign. I like him. I'm a big Jimmy. I'm weird players Like. There's certain obscure guys Like I like Kaliev. I saw glimpses of something that could possibly be a good player. You know I like Vesey, you know, I just think you know these guys. There's just something there that I like. There's an intangible. I remember Vesey. That whole summer was interesting when he signed, when that whole thing went down with him.
Speaker 1:Yeah, we got a lot of excitement.
Speaker 2:that offseason Was that the Shattenkirk offseason?
Speaker 1:Yes, I had that one too.
Speaker 2:I had the trade deadline thing with Shattenkirk also.
Speaker 1:It was the year before because VC was part of the team that lost to Ottawa.
Speaker 2:That's right. So they never made the playoffs with Shattenkirk, that's right. Yeah, you sit back and you think about it. When they brought in Shattenkirk, you're like they were already on the way down at that point.
Speaker 1:Well, Shattenkirk was highly sought after.
Speaker 2:Yeah, and he's another one that took less money to come here and play.
Speaker 1:Yeah, what else DC didn't actually dress. Dc didn't dress at all for the playoffs for Colorado.
Speaker 2:That was probably a gift when they sent him to Colorado. That was a favor to him. He didn't play there either.
Speaker 1:Jack Stutnicker. That was another name, draft name.
Speaker 2:Did Calvin DeHaan sign yet?
Speaker 1:No, still out there.
Speaker 2:He's going to blame us. Now. We're in trouble.
Speaker 1:Still out there.
Speaker 2:Watch him come back.
Speaker 1:That would be funny. It would be funny if he wanted to come back, yeah.
Speaker 2:I don't know about that, I don't. I don't think he was as bad as people said he was.
Speaker 1:He got raped twice and I forget what game that was. I remember I was texting you while watching it. I'm like he just got a pocket pick. Washington, is that what it was? Yeah, two really bad turnovers that just wound up in the back of the net Like one-on-one turnovers, not even just like a bad pass.
Speaker 2:I'm very curious because you know Drury's going to have some kind of conference call when all's said and done, what he's going to say about moves. I don't know if they'll bring up the whole Susie thing. I doubt they will bring up specific guys, but I'm very curious to see if he's always going to. I know what the answers are going to be. I don't even know why I bother. I guess we have to talk about it. But if we get something out there that makes us better, we're going to look into everything. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, so on and so forth.
Speaker 1:He's not going to say anything. I like spots. We're going to do scripted questions with scripted answers.
Speaker 2:One thing I will say about Jeff Gordon. You can read him more. When he said something Like you could kind of tell if he was giving you like a cookie-cutter answer or if he was giving you like a genuine yeah this is when was the last time you actually heard Chris Drury speak?
Speaker 1:We've gotten Q&A, where we get the excerpts. When was the last time you heard his voice?
Speaker 2:Right, so there's nothing to read into it. When they hired Sullivan For the coaches, he talks yeah, we never. And again, this is a pet peeve. I've complained about it, you've complained about it, sean McCaff, mike, we all have complained about this. He never, we never, get to hear the man speak, never. Why can't they put the conference call on video? Let us hear it with questions.
Speaker 1:They don't want anything thrown back. They control the narrative completely.
Speaker 2:Why, though? What's the reasoning behind it? What are they afraid of? I don't know. See, that's the problem. See, the other fan bases maybe not. I'm not talking about Canada. Canada, because Canada's hockey's king. So they have to do this stuff. They don't need. The Rangers don't need to be fan-friendly, because they have a rabid fan base. It doesn't matter. It's like they don't care about the season ticket holders. They really don't, sean. They don't care about us. They don't.
Speaker 1:Every fan base has enough to get there, other than like Arizona back in the day. But outside of that, everyone's got their season ticket holder base that they don't need to really appease to because they know whatever's on the ice is really what's going to drive. You know, drive attention.
Speaker 2:Yeah, nothing else, huh.
Speaker 1:Nothing else Kind of slowed down, yep.
Speaker 2:Yeah, it's kind of. It was kind of fast and furious for a bit and it's kind of really slowed down a little bit. They haven't announced the Gavrikov, right. The Rangers haven't announced it yet, right, which means they're probably On their site. On their site, I think Greg McKegg's coming back. Greg McKagg.
Speaker 1:The Keggerator, one of the ugliest looking men the world has ever seen. Oh God, hee-haw. I just want some fucking clarity on what we're getting back from Miller here. Just someone fucking announce it already, I know.
Speaker 2:You know, the second we get off. They're going to announce it, right 100%. We'll have to wait to talk about it. I guess we'll come back. Are you available Thursday night?
Speaker 1:No, I have a game.
Speaker 2:Wednesday night it's tomorrow.
Speaker 1:Really it's tomorrow. We can come on tomorrow if there's anything that we haven't covered here.
Speaker 2:Yeah, We'll wait another five minutes, we'll go to 3 o''clock see if anything comes through, because we're kind of uh, we're not on steam here. It's uh, it's still not enough. I mean gavrikov and you know, whatever compensation they get for miller, you know, especially if it's just draft compensation, I'm not sure if it's enough to say, okay, this team has turned the corner of their Stanley cup contender. I think a lot of things need to break for them next year. I think Panera still needs to put up 190, at least put up 90 points again. I think Miller needs to put up close to 90 points.
Speaker 2:I think you need at least 70 points. That is a bin a points. I think you need at least 70 points. That is a Benajed. I think you need Lafreniere to put up at least 50 points and you need Cooley to progress and you need Fox. I mean, you need the guys that none other than Panarin, and Panarin had a down year for Panarin standards but he still put up 80 points on this shit team. You need those everybody to give you at least what 20%, 30%, more than what they gave you point-wise 15% more 20% is a lot.
Speaker 2:I told you I'm not good at math, yeah, but if a guy scores 50 points, 20% is what? 10 more points, 10 points, 20% guys scores 50 points.
Speaker 1:20% is what? 10 more points? 10 points, yeah, all right, 20%, we'll agree on 20.
Speaker 2:20%. I mean, like you said. I mean I just think there's more to give. I think Edstrom, I think he's going to take a nice step I honestly thought when he went down and he got hurt, I feel like that kind of disjointed.
Speaker 1:Yeah, because he was getting a lot of big goals. When the rest of the lineup was through, he was. I mean, what?
Speaker 2:about that goal he scored against Vegas? Yeah, what about the goal he scored with his back? I mean he's spinning around, he sticks his stick. I mean I'm telling you that guy's going to be big for us. That's a guy you win with in the playoffs. I saw, I mean, again, it was a very small set of ties, Sean, but Noah Laba looked really good down there too.
Speaker 1:Where.
Speaker 2:In Hartford yeah.
Speaker 1:He played in Hartford.
Speaker 2:Yes, he played on. He was there on a tryout.
Speaker 1:I haven't, like I said, I haven't seen him play, so yeah, he scored on his first shift.
Speaker 2:I believe, down there, we need these guys, we need these prospects, we need these guys to, if nothing else, if nothing else, we need these guys to be assets for us.
Speaker 1:I didn't realize he played 11 games.
Speaker 2:To be an asset for us, assets, we need assets. You know, I mean we've squandered guy after guy. I mean look at Miller, look at the return, what's his name? What's the shithead's name down in Florida, the coach Cooper, he was glowing about Keandre Miller after that series. I mean he did everything but give him a reach Around in that series, I mean, and he was gold back Then. Now you can only get a First and a third round pick, which was what we're hearing which we don't know the compensation, but you would have thought you could get a prospect, a pick. I mean three, four components For this guy now. Now you're giving him away for a late one.
Speaker 2:For a late first-round pick. Now, if they turn the first-round pick into a player at the trade deadline or whatever, then maybe it's worth it, but again you're giving the guy away where again it's poor asset management. Now they got a one for Nils Lundqvist, they got a two for Leos Anderson, which turned out to be you know, they got Perot and they got Cooley, essentially because they traded their other two first round picks. No, I'm sorry, the Cooley was in the Lafreniere draft. I'd say the Lafreniere draft might turn out to be a very good draft for this team.
Speaker 1:Yeah.
Speaker 2:They got some players in that draft.
Speaker 1:Gorton was on his way to turning it around, and now he's built an excellent organization in Montreal. They are so stacked, montreal, and then they make another trade today.
Speaker 2:Ronald Attard yeah, ronald Attard side. Yeah, ronald Attard signed. That's hilarious.
Speaker 1:Just saw that. Does he have that jersey hanging in the basement? He's probably dying for this guy to play for the Rangers, oh yeah, oh, he's probably dying.
Speaker 2:I got a message from him. I said you see, I saw your brother signed with Montreal. Oh man, that's funny. I just want to know this. I mean, what time did they announce that Montreal possibility? I'm going to look that back up that was at 1254.
Speaker 1:So that was two hours ago. What Montreal possibility.
Speaker 2:Oh, not Montreal. Excuse me, the Miller Carolina thing, oh yeah.
Speaker 1:It's been two hours. It was right after the Gabrikov signing. It was like Gabrikov signed Miller being traded Again. This has obviously all been worked out. The trade itself has probably been worked out for a while.
Speaker 2:So it's just the Miller contract thing.
Speaker 1:That's right, it's all contingents on him staying, you know, on him signing long term, and maybe they're hammering out different. You know both maybe a four-year deal or a six-year deal, maybe there's different options.
Speaker 2:Maybe the Rangers are doing a sign-and-trade and he's getting an eight-year deal. Maybe I've seen a lot more of those, those sign-in trades.
Speaker 1:It depends on you know who it makes the most sense to, did you?
Speaker 2:see that Darren Dreger put out that there's a possibility that Bo and Biro might get an offer sheet.
Speaker 1:Yeah, I don't think it's happening.
Speaker 2:Yeah, I don't think he's going to get traded.
Speaker 1:It was a Calgary right.
Speaker 2:He's a right-handed shot. I mean D'Angelo resigned. I mean they were talking about right-handed shots. There was like none and D'Angelo wanted to go back to the Islanders.
Speaker 1:Yeah, For what like 1-7 or 1-7-5?. Yeah, good, I'm just happy he's in the league. I don't care where he goes, I'm with you.
Speaker 2:I'm a fan.
Speaker 1:All right All right pal. Wrap it up. I got to get back to work.
Speaker 2:Yep, if anything breaks, we'll get on somehow, or?
Speaker 1:do something, See what happens. Thanks for tuning in with us guys. Thanks again for everybody.
Speaker 2:Thank you Later Later.
