The Fisch Bowl

Killer Klowns, Cult Staying Power

Sam Fisch Season 6 Episode 9

Send us a text

A seemingly “too weird to work” movie becomes a touchstone for generations—that’s the magic we tap into as we sit down with voices from Killer Klowns From Outer Space at Four Realms 2025. From the very first fangirl moment to a cascade of memories about rubbery practical effects, late‑night shoots, and a cotton‑candy sense of menace, we explore how a film that defied every box ended up building a box of its own: a beloved cult home where fans keep coming back.

We revisit the origins of the roles, laugh through a gracious name correction, and dig into the tactile craft that made the Klowns feel real enough to haunt dreams. You’ll hear why practical effects still matter, how tone can be both playful and unsettling, and what turns a one‑off oddity into a tradition parents share with their kids. Along the way, we map the modern ecosystem—action figures, special editions featuring Mike and Debbie, and a video game that reintroduces the world to new players—showing how physical collectibles and interactive media keep the universe alive.

Of course, the big question hangs in the air: will a sequel finally happen? We unpack the rights maze, the misreadings from risk‑averse studios, and the irony of a script once labeled “the worst” becoming the seed of a fan movement. The takeaway is both simple and rare in Hollywood: originality endures when the audience claims it. Until the paperwork clears, the community keeps the tent lit. If you love cult horror, practical effects, or stories of creative persistence, you’ll feel right at home here.

Enjoy the conversation? Follow the show, share it with a fellow Klowns fan, and leave a quick review—what scene still lives in your head?

SPEAKER_02:

Grant Kramer on the Fisher. Welcome. Here at Four Realms 2025. Thank you for taking the time to swim in the bowl. My pleasure. Excuse Annie. Come on in. Come on. Come on in.

SPEAKER_00:

Come on in. Come on in.

SPEAKER_02:

Come on in. Come on in. Come to the podcast. This is perfect. We'll get the both viewing. Just come sit over here by the laptop.

SPEAKER_00:

So I'm totally fangirling out. Tom has the person who invented collection new zombie.

SPEAKER_04:

Oh my god. That was his idea.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04:

And I was in Returnal Landing Dead part two.

SPEAKER_02:

There you go. My darling in Killer Clowns from Metterns. We have Suzanne Summers here to just join. So sorry. Suzanne Snyder.

SPEAKER_04:

Both on.

SPEAKER_02:

Excellent. Sorry about the miss miss the name there. The key stars of Killer Clowns from Out Space. I want to start with Howard Space. One of my all-time favorite. I have configures.

SPEAKER_01:

I forgot the name of the doctor. But I add that figure I want with the mother one single left there.

SPEAKER_04:

I didn't know it was a good one.

SPEAKER_03:

Yeah, we have blessed working on it. I think Suzanne is the one that probably predicted its uh its success better than anybody. I mean I think we all thought it was kind of a crazy title, and they do the possibility, you never know, right? Or something like that. Um but it's still almost a little shocking every time I see how much further along the whole kind of cult status would be.

SPEAKER_02:

I mean comic books and drama. Uh now there's a book with the video games. Yeah, it works.

unknown:

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03:

You have to get the special edition. You have to get the with the special edition with Mike and Debbie. Yeah, Mike and Debbie edition. Yeah. Right.

SPEAKER_02:

Awesome. I have not played the game yet, but it's it looks amazing. Yeah, yeah. I mean I think the next phase of like reintroduced they maybe. But then you have a lot of big and important set of times. I think the big question is we have every other fan of the answer. Okay.

SPEAKER_00:

I don't know what time the bar is open, but I'll find out.

SPEAKER_04:

Are we ever going to see the the light on the uh we got some more I think the video game could be?

SPEAKER_02:

Um right is the same thing.

SPEAKER_03:

That's the problem, it's been a rights issue, and so I was kind of leaving the charge part for a while until the rights issue happened. Yeah, so now the Kyoto's now so um we're kind of really hoping to get an update as well to make us girls to start.

SPEAKER_02:

Yeah. It's it's one of the probably the biggest all the time that Trudeau has gotten. Yeah. I mean the clowns and everything. I don't care about it.

SPEAKER_04:

That's what they hope for. The practical effects that they made. I mean, it's pushing and it's silly, but it's a lot of people.

SPEAKER_03:

So I think one of the reasons I think you know one of the reasons why Killer Clowns holds up this well and is as popular is the same. Unfortunately, the same reason why it's been kind of in a way hard to get a sequel made is because it's completely an original. Right. And you know, Hollywood tends to uh want to repeat what it knows. Yes, especially these days. We're not like anything else, you know what I mean? Um I mean I remember when the head of years ago when I'd written the script with Jetto Brothers, the script that I wrote for the Killer Plants. Everybody that knew Killer Plants loved it. And the head of the studio read it and he was like, This is the worst script I've ever read in my life. There's no blood, there's no there's no this, there's no that, it's it's like it was like he just didn't get it, right? Like he's trying to put it into a box that you already know. Right, right. And you have to like leave that that headspace when you're just completely original.

SPEAKER_04:

Exactly.

SPEAKER_02:

Right, yeah, right. Multi-generational now. Yes, yeah. I mean my my dad showed it to me when I when I was little. And uh because because of the combination of uh killer clowns and and furry and penny wise. Uh I I now have uh you guys and and Stephen King and and to thank for having a recurring uh killer clown.

SPEAKER_03:

What do they call what do they call what do they call the the clown phobia again?

SPEAKER_02:

Well I guess I I don't have the clown phobia, but it's I I I apparently from like seeing both of these movies probably add more than color clowns, but they mesh together, you know, and stuff like this or whatever. So like every so often oh oh how like sometimes it'll be more like penny guys leaning and other times it'll be more colorful. Like I had one where it's in a spaceship and like the climate so that the the giant sure killer pound coming downzilla, right. You know, I I've had like dreams where I'm like running through the spaceship and everything.

SPEAKER_04:

Oh my goodness.

SPEAKER_02:

Very vivid, very vivid.

SPEAKER_03:

Um but uh I mean well you know shooting the movie was kind of like living in a dream, right? Because we we we we shot the whole movie at nighttime. Right, right. So it's six weeks. We didn't we weren't we weren't really awake during the day, right? Yeah. And you know, every everything's kind of surreal. So as long as like dreams of things are right, right.

SPEAKER_02:

Well, it's it's a classic film, um a co-classic. And I mean they've been playing it on a couple of the movie channels right now. I watch it every time. So I own it. Uh my own collection. I have like I said, I have a bunch of figure. Um I I would have brought them, but they're all packed up right now. It's a mess, mess together. Swim in the bowl. Yes. Thank you everyone for taking the time to swim in the bowl with me. I I hope I hope the temperature was just right. It was perfect. Perfect.

SPEAKER_03:

Come on in, the water's fine.
