Yes. I have had these for a long time. Okay. These are old news at this point. But I don't know if you've heard them yet. All right. We've both been out of town repeatedly for a long time. Yes. So this first one was from March. Okay. Did you hear about the plagiarism lawsuit that was going on in YA? So is this the one where an AI bit ended up in someone's book? Okay. So this is author named Lynn Freeman. Okay. Brought a suit against author Tracy Wolfe. Okay. Saying that her YA fantasy series called Crave was substantially similar to one of Freeman's unpublished manuscripts. Okay. Okay. And here's the great part. The judge ruled that they were indeed similar, but only in the ways that young adult romanticy is all similar to each other. But here's the best bit. Okay. Okay. The court added quote hot, sexy, dangerous boys cannot be copyrighted. Wow.

I love that. Yeah. Thank you for bringing that to my attention. I knew you were. That is the best court ruling, maybe of all time. We have Judge Colleen McMahon to thank for that. Hot, sexy, dangerous boys cannot be copyrighted. Correct. Yep. Yeah. So so you and I are safe, clearly. That's a good thing, right? For like I think suing over books is generally just it's bad for the whole industry. I'm not saying there aren't some valid ones out there. I wouldn't would never, you know, say we can't do this, but I sure am glad, for instance, that Stephanie Meyer just let 50 Shades of Grey, you know, just go just go and didn't make a big deal of it. Like massive props to Stephanie for just being like, you know what, the world doesn't need more lawsuits. Yeah, it was based off some fanfic. She wrote her story. All right, good. Right? Like, just let people write their stories. Now, I'm again, maybe there are chances. I'm much more interested in the lawsuits when it's the very obvious Hollywood things where someone sends in a book, they reject it, or a manuscript, and then mysteriously something very similar to it gets released very soon after. So yeah, which is common in Hollywood.

Yeah. It's very common in music for lawsuits to actually work because people will sample and sometimes they go too far. Yeah. But yeah. In books, books, it doesn't really fly.

Oh, I got the other news item also from March. Okay. So the TSA was trying to tell people not to bring too many liquids. Okay. And their direct quote, again, direct quote. Protein shakes, 3.4 ounces or less. But rotisserie chickens, as many as you can fit. So we have now official permission to fly with as many whole rotisserie chickens as possible.

Well, I'm going to show you some things today because I got to go to London. And in London, I did a bunch of signings. And I think some of this might actually be from Atlanta. Oh, okay. As well. But mostly London people gave me stuff. Yay. And I'm going to show off the stuff. Now, this is not a request for more stuff. You coming to see me is enough of a gift. I do like seeing the fan art and stuff, but you know, please don't feel that you need to give me anything.

I don't know why I was thinking about this. I think I was thinking about how mean you are to cats and how that would make the audience hate you even more. And that's always a good thing.

I've never harmed a cat. Okay. But I have definitely told cats that they're ugly and nobody loves them. Wow. That's that is mean.

Holy crap. One of the first things I remember about you and pets, I know two Dan Pet stories. Okay. One is that you got some cats. I'm like, oh, kittens. You're like, yeah, I hate them. They're gonna live outside. I hope they get run over by a car.

I didn't actually hope they got run over by a car, but I definitely hoped that they would run away and become feral cats. Yeah. Every cat that I have owned, which I guess is just three, has been involuntary. Oh, but here is one of the great stories about those specific cats you are referring to. Yes. When we moved to Germany, we gave those cats to my parents to take care of while we were gone. One of them immediately ran away. He did not like my parents at all. The other one stayed and became my dad's best friend in the world. Okay. And okay, so a little bit of background here in our church, we give people blessings. Yes. Put hands on your head, say a prayer to like help heal you. So my dad had to do this. A lady was on her way to the hospital and couldn't get out of the car. So they were giving a blessing right there by the curb, and the cat ran up on top of the car, looked at what was happening, and then put her paw on the head of the person and participated in a priesthood blessing. So wow. Okay. That's the coolest thing a cat has ever done.

I am not a big believer in outdoor cats. It just decreases the lifespan so much and and whatnot. So I always push for our cats to be indoor. We've had two cats since I've been, you know, married to Emily in an adult. One is Pinecone Necko, hello Kitty Chan, Love Sweetheart, Sparkle Oliver Sanderson. Sorry, what? Pinecone Necko, hello Kitty Chan, Love Sweetheart, Sparkle, Oliver Sanderson. Wow, that's a name. Yeah. Oliver's over there. So what happened is this cat, we moved into the house and there's an empty lot next door that is now my supervillain lair. Yeah. It was not my supervillain lair, then it was an empty lot. And there was a white cat that lived in the empty lot. And Joel, who was like two at the time, started calling him White Kitty. And the White Kitty was super friendly. And I noticed at one point that the White Kitty was fixed. I'm like, okay, he's super friendly. He's very clean. He also is fixed. This was someone's pet. Maybe the people who had the house before us had an outdoor cat they didn't bring with them or something. Anyway, we thought he was some neighborhood cat, but then we saw him in the winter just laying out there. Even in the cold, he'd be under a tree. So they started to befriend him. And one day I heard him meowing at the door. I opened it and he sauntered into the house, looked at the beanbag chair, climbed up on it, curled up, and went to sleep. And I'm like, all right, we have a cat now. In fact, the cat distribution system at work. I let him out that night, and then the next night, since I wasn't there to let him in, he came to our bedroom window and meowed until I opened the door and he came in. So two days in a row, then he was our cat. So Joel got to name him. And we said, Joel, what would you like to name your kitty? And he looked around and he saw something and he said, Pinecone, which is a great name for a cat, for a rough and tumble Tom cat who, you know, has lived on the streets. But then his cousin Hanna, whose family is allergic, can't have a cat, asked if the cat could be partially hers too. Okay. And we said, Well, of course, Hannah the cat can be partially yours. So she named the cat Hello Kitty Chan because she likes Hello Kitty. And then Joel wanted to add another name because his aunt, my sister Lauren's cat, had just died, who was named Neko that he loved.

So he so he added Neko. So it was Pine Cone, Neko, Hello Kitty Chan. And then the next day, Hanna added Love Sweetheart. And then the next day she added Sparkle. And then a number of years later, Oliver, when he was little, named things after himself. And he added Oliver to the cat's name. He just said he needed to have Oliver. And he named a lot of things Oliver. Fish, our fridge. Oliver just named a lot of things Oliver. So I wanted to have a fat wanted to have a fat cat. He wanted to have a fat cat that was too fat to leave his room named Oliver. So Pinecone Neko, Hello Kitty Chan, Love, Sweetheart, Sparkle, Oliver Sanderson was the full name of the cat. He passed away about two years ago now.

Did you know that I put Pinecone Necko into the Cherry Dogs books? I did, yes, because I've read those books. Yeah. It was very minor, but one of the characters has a Pinecone Necko t-shirt that she wears.

And then the other cat is Freya. Though before we talk about Freya, I'm going to show this fan art of Kaladin and this fan art of Adolin. So speak of hot, what was it? Hot, sexy, dangerous boys. Hot, sexy, dangerous boys. Look what we got. This is from Ringlet, Concept Artist Illustrator. So we got hot, sexy, dangerous boys. I don't know how dangerous Adolin looks. He might just be hot sexy. He looks a little dangerous.

Yeah, maybe there's some story of why I have that. Um so yeah, there's a lot of things in here that don't look like they came from from this, but Okay, I was just given these boxes for all. Oh, yes. Here here's a cool thing. The fans in Portugal Portugal made a Cosmere Portugal team, and they have like a nice little booklet of a lot of their fan spaces, and they wrote this in English and whatnot, and there's a nice Inquisitor sticker right there, and whatnot. So they gave this to me, showing off just kind of oh, we've got some Hoyd cosplaying in here, we've got some tattoos and some sander shelves and whatnot. So, anyway, this was like a nice little book as a gift from all of the fans in Portugal because they couldn't all make it. They came to London and gave this to me with some cool pictures of Portuguese things, some Portuguese sausage there. When I was in Portugal, I ate the sausages, they were quite delicious.

Yeah, when I was living in Europe, I went to a small science fiction fantasy convention in Lisbon. It's one of my favorite cons I've ever been to. Yeah, Lisbon. Everyone was unbelievably nice.

I don't think so. I know that Freya exists, but I don't think I've heard a story about Freya. Freya is also known as Closet Cat. Okay.

I have heard where Closet Cat came from. Yeah, Closet Cat, Freya. There was a kitten at my sister Jane's house. This is Adam's wife.

Hiding inside their garage. Oh, okay. A little tabby kitten. What is Freya? She's the gray and brown. It's a tabby, right? I don't know. Yeah. I'm seeing the internet. It's a tabby. Yeah, tabby, because she's the tubby tabby. Yeah, so it's alliterative. So little kitten was not tubby, was kind of scrawny. And Jane took a picture of it to show all the neighbors, and nobody said it was their cat. She left the door open. She went back in the garage a few hours later. Cat was gone. Uh, she drove to our house. Cat appears at our house underneath our grill. Um, we have a built-in grill, and there's a little fluffy tail that looks like a raccoon tail. Emily thought it was a raccoon, looked under there. It is a feral kitten who immediately scampered away, but took up residence underneath the grill for several days. Okay. And this cat was scrawny and obviously still a kitten, but was having troubles. And so we got a cage from the police. You can go pick up a cat cage. We caught her and took her to the vet. And my kids had already started calling it Jeff the Kitty because my brother-in-law, Jeff, they found the cat on his birthday. Okay. And so Jeff the Kitty. Well, Kitty was a girl, and Emily's like, I had better name this kitty fast. Otherwise, they're gonna name the kitty Jeff Alina. Because if you've had kids, yeah, you know, that's exactly what would happen. So Emily decided the cat was hers and named her Freya because we already had a pet. My sister has a Thor. So Freya, Norse mythology, whatever. And so she brought Freya home, and Freya was super feral, did not like anybody, any people. And Emily knew if she left her, took her to the pound, this is a cat that just gets put down. And so Emily decided she was going to save this cat. And so she let the cat live in our closet and spent the next six months taming the cat by going in and reading in there for hours on end and then putting out food and having the cat eat while she was there, and then moving the food closer and closer and closer, and then putting it on her fingers and all of that stuff until Freya became fully tame for Emily. She hides from most everyone else, but she'll peek out and look at people and things. And so she's she's now a scared house cat who is fully tame, not a feral cat at all. And okay. Yep. Oliver's been feeding her treats, and that's the way to Freya's heart. And so she she actually even doesn't run from Oliver as much. It is also the way to my heart.

Yes. So if anyone wants to domesticate me, bring me treats. Now you've had a dog.

That's the other thing I know about you. You had a you had a dog that was quite cute, but didn't work out.

So I've had many dogs throughout my life. I had two dogs when I was little. Okay. But then we've had a bunch since we got married because Dawn has always had dogs. Okay. And so we were driving home from a big family vacation, and I don't remember where we had been, but it was a big road trip. And in the car we were making jokes about getting a dog and what kind of dog would we get. And I said, How about a British bulldog? And she said, No, those are way too expensive. But then she was bored on a road trip, so she started looking up prices. Uh-huh. And yes, they're too expensive, but at that point she'd seen all their cute faces, and she fell in love with one, and she's like, This one lives in Utah and is pretty tame, and we could get it relatively cheap. And so we ended up with a British Bulldog named Charlemagne. We called him Charlie. Charlie. Yeah.

Yeah, he was there when we did gaming.

Yeah. And he He was fine until kid number five was born. Yeah. At which point he did not like anybody coming into the house. He did not like people standing up because he decided that was dangerous or or So he was overprotective of the kid.

Overprotective of the kid. Seems like a wire can get crossed with that. You know, dogs are very loyal and things like that. But uh yeah, a wire could get crossed.

Yeah. Funnily enough, he became difficult for everybody, including me. And previously he'd been pretty obedient. But Howard Taylor. Like, Charlie barked at him once. Yeah. And Howard kind of looked at him and, you know, put his hand on his head and said, Nope, I'm in charge. And Charlie believed him. And just anytime Howard would come over, Charlie was like, Oh, here's the boss. I'm gonna follow him around. And none of the rest of us could have that effect on him. We loved Charlie. We did eventually have to sell him when we moved to Germany because it would have been prohibitively expensive and take several, like six months, the process of taking him with us. Yeah. And the place that we ended up living in didn't take pets anyway. So Charlie, I know this sounds bad, but he went to live on a farm. An actual farm. It was actually a ranch. He lives on a ranch. I'd probably not anymore, because this was ages ago. But yeah. Now he actually lives on a farm. Now yeah. He was stopped at a ranch for many years. He was very happy. They renamed him something. They didn't like Charlie. But yeah. Anyway.

Now you know my favorite type of pet is birds. I've always had pet birds. And the most recent one was Jell-O. Though Magellan, we had him start spending time with a bird trainer to take care of him. And he he liked it there way better. Oh. And so while we still see Jell-O now and then, Jell-O mostly lives with the other birds. He was not having a good time. Number one, he was really aggressive to Ollie. Just did not like Oliver, despite Oliver trying really hard. Oliver didn't do anything to make him not like him. And he also needed birds. And so that was our thought is she'll spend part of the time with the trainer. And then he really came to like the birds there. So we don't see Jell O as much anymore as we used to, though we do still pay for Jell O's upkeep and things like that, because Payne. likes birds. Yeah. And he likes the birds more than he likes the humans. He's a communal bird. He's a very communal bird.

So now you have adopted him in the sense of adopting a hippopotamus.

We're more like godparents to Jell O at this point. It's been a couple of years and over the time it's been slowly more and more, you know. So we are Jell-O's godparents. And that was that was hard for me. I really like Jell-O. But you do sometimes have to do things that are best for the pets. And I did not go get another bird because I'm like, eh, too risky. Don't want your heart broken again. Yeah, too risky to like my first two birds I really liked and they were great pets, but sometimes parrots, they're just their personalities can make it really hard if they don't like somebody in the house. And that can be very, very plus Jell-O was big. Jell-O was big and so I was the only one that could handle him really because I know my way around birds and I know bird body language and I know things like that. But I couldn't let anyone else really handle Jell-O because Jell-O has a little quirk, which is when he's scared or panicked, he goes down and grabs the branch he's on and holds it tight like a comfort item.

If he's on your arm he will do that to your finger. And I mean I've been bitten by birds so many times I barely even notice.

But I couldn't give him to anyone else. Like if he got spooked and he latched on, they're going to flip out and start shaking him and things like that. You know, with me I could just be like oh you know stop that. But and I couldn't train him out of that. It was there are certain things that are instinctual and his instinct is look for my comfort item I tried for a while to teach him to use a different stick that I was holding and it just didn't end up working. Maybe I could have done it with more time but this is just I think he needed birds. He was scared of too many things and whatnot.

He just yeah he needed other large parrots to be with I think the lesson that we learned from this is that if you want a bunch of pets but you don't have a lot of money, tell people you're a trainer and then get the pets to love you and then other people will pay for you to have a whole bunch of pets.

That sounds smart. Yeah actually if you don't have a lot of money and you want a pet then get a reptile. That's what we did when we were kids. Well they are cheap so they can be cheap. You don't want to be super cheap with any pet. Like people say get a goldfish no a nice goldfish tank will cost you good money. And for a lot of pets it's not about the money you spend up front it's like how much time are you going to take if you want to have a parrot parrots are awesome. I love parrots you've got to spend time every day. Same with a dog. You can't just like have a dog and leave it like a cat. You need to dedicate time to it there very social. They're social. And so if you're going to have a parrot, you know you're giving up an hour or so each day spending time with that parrot doing training doing teaching and things like that. A tortoise like Dallin has all he has to do is make sure it eats every couple days and clean up some poop. And the tortoise is a great pet. The tortoise is a lot of fun tortoises are cool but also pretty low maintenance time but you still have to buy a nice enclosure you have to you know make sure that the tortoise is taken care of. Those things can be not cheap but they are cheap in the time and emotional investment way. You could get a reptile or you could go by way and get a frog. Or you could do all the doll ever did and get a frog but frogs are pretty hard more hard. They're not as hard as like a mammal but it's harder than the reptiles to take care of your frog. Yep. You have to make sure you got the humidity right and things like that for the frog.

I had a frog when I was young like 10 12 years old and I loved it.

Frogs are still my favorite animal when I was a kid like everyone bought hamsters for their kids. Hamsters you know not against the people who like hamsters like I'm going to say but hamsters are kind of terrible pets. If you love hamsters I'm sure you can make them wonderful pets but they're not the the buy for a kid to have as their first pet. Yeah. Like they're pretty fragile you know you need more space and things to do than people give them and so they get neurotic very easily and they have short lifespans. These three things are pretty bad for your just like average kid to have as a pet whereas we bought Joel a leopard gecko. It's cute it's really low maintenance and it lives for 10 years which is not huge commitment but also you know you're going to have time to love and take care of this leopard gecko. I wish people didn't buy like gerbils for their kids they went and got them a nice tortoise or gecko.

Bearded dragons is the one I'll show you dragons that's one of the many ones my daughter wants a couple years ago I did a riding retreat that was focused on animals and specifically animal husbandry. It was you're riding fantasy and yet you've never ridden a horse I kept calling it the horses are not motorcycles retreat. Okay. And so we did it up in Bear Lake which is northern Utah we had a ranch where we could go and get you know instruction from ranchers and and horse people all the time. We had on one of the last days some falconers come and teach us falconry. Falconry's cool and one of the first things they said was that they hate the Harry Potter movies because every kid wanted an owl and none of them took care of their owls. Yeah. If you get a pet make sure you are ready to love and take care of that pet.

Falcons are in many ways harder than parrots. Really? Because you have to fly the falcons a lot of parrots like there's some discussion of how much parrots should be free flying but there are plenty of parrots that are groundbirds that you know flying is an emergency escape method for some parrots. Like if you get a cockatiel cockatiels really prefer to hop around the one that I've had he does not want to fly. Yeah that takes too much energy he wants to fly to the ground pick on things climb up on people sit on their shoulders he does not want to fly larger parrots like macaws there's a lot of good argument for that they should be free flighted and things like that. But a falcon there's no question the falcon needs to exercise it needs to fly it needs to be able to free fly it has to be able to hunt that's how they get a lot of their like most parrots are vegetarians. Their hunting is if you can come up with a little thing that hides a bunch of berries and stuff that they have to pick at that's hunting for them. It's really engaging falcon you got to be throwing food in the air so they can catch it and feel proud of themselves for having hunt it's yeah yeah it's a lot of work. Yeah falconry is so cool. That's what I would love to do. It is very cool. It's good that falconry usually requires a permit in most states because like they are awesome but it's a step above even getting a large parrot. Right.

Yeah well and the thing that I have noticed about falconers is that it's all or nothing. Yeah. Nobody owns one falcon. Yeah. Yep. Right well that you have zero falcons or you have five.

Since they're free flighted they sometimes do just fly off. I've talked to some falconers and it's not because the falcon doesn't want to be with the people but there's instincts and it's just like oh I'm flying now. Yep. What was I supposed to do? Oh well I'm flying now and then they're just off and they're gone. And so fair enough that's a thing that happens with falconry now and then and you just kind of have to be be okay with that. Yeah. Oh we're going to do this in a second but in Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi people have passports for their falcons. And they on the airlines they buy them seats and they have things for the falcons to sit on in the seats. I've seen photos of that and always assumed they were fake. Nope they've got passports and things because falconry is like huge there because the Bedouin tradition of the hunting falcon was like they hunted with their falcons and it's a very royal tradition and there's all these bloodlines and these things and so the falcons are serious business over in the UAE. Wow that's cool. So I was given this cool thing that I want to make sure to get to and it is a magic deck box handmade for me that says my name on the cover that's made to look like a leather bound book and there was even a pack of cards in it. So they brought me the backup cards from the country that they're from I think Germany. Is this German? Yes. Yeah so this is a German fan who brought me a pack of German magic cards. Oh yeah there. So the Edge of Eternity I think edge of eternity in German with there's even a life counter so oh wow yeah this was this was handmade wooden everything. Handmade wooden thing with all these little deck boxes. That's awesome it's it's pretty darn cool. So I'm going to give this to you after this to go put in our magic room we play magic here at the office and it's a good place for all of you know my decks and things like that.
