In Episode 9 of Chartered Accountants Global Update, we explore why, in an era of misinformation, institutional distrust, and AI disruption, Chartered Accountants are emerging as trusted leaders the world depends on.

New insights from Edelman DXI’s 2025 Trust Survey reveal that Chartered Accountants rank third globally for trust — behind only doctors and engineers — even as trust in the broader accountancy profession declines. What’s behind this trust gap, and what does it mean for the future of our profession?

We unpack the key findings, including why three in four businesses now rely on Chartered Accountants for data integrity, and how our role is expanding beyond compliance to ethical stewardship and strategic leadership in the digital age.

Plus, get a preview of the upcoming "Beyond Accounting: AI and Accountants 2025" event, where we’ll explore how to lead the AI transformation — not just adapt to it.

Welcome to Episode 9 of Chartered Accountants Global Update, the audio newsletter from Chartered Accountants Worldwide. I'm your host, and today we're diving deep into some remarkable findings that show just how much the world trusts Chartered Accountants – especially when everything else seems uncertain.

In a world where trust seems to be in short supply – where institutions are questioned, misinformation spreads like wildfire, and AI is transforming how we work – there's one profession that continues to stand tall. And that's us: Chartered Accountants.

The latest Trust Survey from Edelman DXI brings some truly compelling news. Out of all professions globally, Chartered Accountants rank third for trust – sitting right behind doctors and engineers. But here's what's really striking: while trust in the broader "accountancy" profession has actually declined by three points since 2023, trust in Chartered Accountants has remained rock solid.

This has created a record five-point gap that clearly demonstrates the value of our Chartered designation. As Ainslie van Onselen, Chair of Chartered Accountants Worldwide, puts it: "At a time of eroding trust in institutions, Chartered Accountants are bucking the trend."

Think about what this means. In an era of fake news, deepfakes, and algorithmic uncertainty, finance and business leaders are turning to us not just for our technical expertise, but as guardians of trusted data and ethical leadership.

Speaking of data guardianship – here's a statistic that should make every Chartered Accountant sit up and take notice: Three in four businesses now rely on Chartered Accountants to ensure data integrity. That's a six-point rise since just last year.

We're no longer just number crunchers or compliance checkers. We've evolved into something far more critical – we're the data guardians and ethical stewards that organizations desperately need as they navigate digital transformation, AI integration, and the constant threat of misinformation.

As Penelope Mantzaris from Edelman DXI notes: "At a time when truth is contested and data is vulnerable, the role of Chartered Accountants as data guardians has never been more vital."

But with great trust comes great opportunity – and great responsibility. The research shows that credibility on purpose-driven issues is up by 13 points. Business leaders aren't just expecting us to manage the books; they're looking to us for strategic leadership through complex ethical, digital, and societal transitions.

Yes, expectations are rising slightly faster than delivery – but that's actually good news. It signals our growing relevance and the tremendous opportunity we have to lead in ways we've never led before.

As van Onselen says: "This is more than a vote of confidence – it's a mandate for leadership."

Now, I could spend the entire episode unpacking these insights, but I want you to dive deeper yourself. The full Trust Survey report is available for download, and I strongly encourage you to read through it. The data tells a story of a profession that's not just surviving disruption – we're thriving through it.

You'll find the complete findings, methodology, and implications at charteredaccountantsworldwide.com. This isn't just interesting reading – it's strategic intelligence that can help you position yourself and your career for the opportunities ahead.

Speaking of opportunities, let me tell you about an event that's perfectly timed with these findings. On September 10th, 2025, CAW Network USA is hosting "Beyond Accounting: AI and Accountants 2025."

This isn't your typical conference about technology replacing jobs. Based on Chartered Accountants Worldwide’s recent AI Transformation Report – which surveyed over 2,700 Chartered Accountants across 48 countries – this event is about how we, as trusted professionals, can lead the AI transformation rather than just react to it.

Given that the Trust Survey shows we're already seen as data guardians, this event will explore how we can extend that role into the AI era. How do we maintain data integrity when algorithms are making decisions? How do we provide ethical guidance when machines are learning from biased data? How do we remain the trusted advisors that business leaders turn to in times of technological uncertainty?

Here's what I want you to do after this episode:

First, download and read the full Trust Survey report. Share the key findings with your colleagues, your clients, your network. This data is powerful – use it to demonstrate the unique value of the Chartered Accountancy designation.

Second, if you're able to attend, RSVP for the AI and Accountants 2025 event on September 10th. The link is available on the Chartered Acccountants Worldwide website. This is your chance to be part of shaping how our profession leads in the AI era, not just adapts to it.

The message from this research is clear: In a world full of uncertainty, Chartered Accountants represent certainty. In a landscape of misinformation, we represent truth. In an era of ethical complexity, we represent integrity.

The question isn't whether the world trusts us – the data proves they do. The question is: How will we live up to that trust and use it to lead in ways that matter?

That's all for Episode 9 of Chartered Accountants Global Update. Until next time, remember: Trust isn't just given – it's earned, maintained, and leveraged to create positive change.

Don't forget to download the Trust Survey report and register for AI and Accountants 2025. Thanks for listening.
