So let’s get down to business, and welcome back to No nonsense Nederlands. Welkom terug! You know the drill. I have a dialogue ready for you and I’ll go through it once, and then we’ll go over it sentence by sentence, with plenty of time for you to guess first and repeat after. Why do I work like that, well, there’s evidence that this kind of practice is invaluable for your learning, so your effort will pay off.
Today we’re talking about pronouns, and more specifically personal and possessive pronouns in the third person. You guessed it: hij and zijn versus zij and haar.
This is something non-natives find very difficult, because it sounds illogical. The personal pronoun for males, hij, takes a possessive pronoun with a z, zijn. And for the female pronouns it’s the other way around! Very frustrating, I know.
So let’s practice a little bit. Today we’ll focus on the masculine pronouns. Hij – zijn. You will notice ‘hem’ a couple of times, that’s the personal pronoun used as a direct object – don’t worry about that one just yet. Next episode we’ll cover the feminine version, and then we’ll do a mixed episode to have you practice.
Here’s the dialogue! I’ll read through it once, and then we’ll go through it sentence by sentence. Good luck!
- Heb je het al gehoord? Adam is gestopt met zijn studies.
- Echt? Hij studeerde rechten, he? (*he or eh is typical Flemish. It's used as right? in English, to ask for confirmation)
- Ja, hij wilde advocaat worden, net als zijn vader en zijn zus. Hij zou gaan werken in het kantoor van zijn vader. Maar nu is hij gestopt.
- Waarom?
- Hij heeft zijn ouders verteld dat hij muzikant wil worden. Hij speelt drum in een groepje. En nu wil hij daarmee op tournee.
- Wat voor muziek speelt zijn groepje?
- Folkmuziek, denk ik.
- En wat zeggen zijn ouders daarvan? Hij was altijd zo’n goede student. Zijn punten waren altijd goed.
- Zijn vader is woedend. Hij wil hem geen geld meer geven. Adam heeft zijn auto moeten teruggeven. Zijn moeder denkt dat hij wel weer terug zal gaan studeren. Ze geeft hem af en toe wat geld. Zijn zus denkt dat hij gewoon gek is.
- Tja (this means something like What can you say?), als het niet lukt, kan hij nog altijd terug naar de universiteit.
- Hij heeft wel succes. Kijk, zijn video is al 2.000 keer bekeken op YouTube.
- Wanneer treedt hij op met zijn groepje?
- Vrijdag.
- Kopen we een ticket? Ik wil zijn muziek wel eens horen.

Ok, I hope you got the gist. It’s about a guy who dropped out of college to tour with his folk band.
Let’s go over it sentence by sentence. I’ll give you the English translation first, so you can give it a try. Then I’ll repeat the Dutch sentence twice, with plenty of time for you to repeat. And do repeat, out loud, don’t just form the reply in your head. You don’t just learn with your brain, learning is doing, so even if your on the subway and people are giving you worried looks: say the actual words. Here we go.
Did you hear? Adam quit his studies.
Heb je het gehoord? Adam is gestopt met zijn studies.
Really? He studied law, right?
Echt? Hij studeerde rechten, he?
Yes, he wanted to be a lawyer, just like his father and sister.

He was going to join his father’s firm.
Hij zou in het kantoor van zijn vader gaan werken.
But now he quit.
Maar nu is hij gestopt.
Why?
Waarom?
He told his parents he wants to follow his dream and become a musician.
Hij heeft zijn ouders verteld dat hij zijn droom wil volgen en muzikant wil worden.
He plays guitar in a band. And he wants to go on tour.
Hij speelt gitaar in een groepje. En daarmee wil hij op tournee.
What kind of music does his band play?
Wat voor muziek speelt zijn groepje?
Folk, I think.
Folkmuziek, denk ik.
And what do his parents say about that?

He was always such a good student. His grades were always good.

His father is furious. He does not want to give him any money anymore.

Adam had to give back his car.
Adam heeft zijn auto moeten teruggeven.
His mother thinks he will go back to school eventually.
Zijn moeder denkt dat hij wel weer terug zal gaan studeren.
She gives him money now and then.
Ze geeft hem af en toe wat geld.
His sister thinks he is just crazy.
Zijn zus denkt dat hij gewoon gek is.
Well, if it doesn’t work out, he can always go back to university.
